When I found this book I knew I had to have it. Lots of really great simple recipes for instance hair rinses, aromatic baths, lotions, vaporisation blends and perfumes. The writing is clear and interesting to read, worded very new agey with exotic names for the recipes like Return To the Source Bath, and A Sprinkling of Fantasy hair rinse. Highly recommended aromatherapy book and those interested in perfume and sensuality.

This is such a delightful book to read and to use. The author manages to combine clear, simple instructions while still managing to capture the reader's interest and imagination with her narrative on the history, effects and uses of the oils. And the blends do work!

The Fragrant Veil is prose, but it reads like poetry and pulls you into its very sensual stories about the history, properties, and suggested beauty uses of essential oils. Amazing that such useful information is such a pleasure to read. I felt beautiful just reading the book, and it inspired me to purchase and use many of the oils described.

Sexy, fun and magical!!

I read Front Porch Princess on a trip. Each evening in the hotel while my husband played laptop solitaire, I read. I loved the heroine and her best friend the beautician. And I loved each of the small town characters that added so much to the story. I usually don't enjoy chick or momlit because I hate whiney heroines. But Elise was no whiner and a fresh new heroine for me to love!

Can't Wait for the Next Book in this Series!!!

"Front Porch Princess" is one of THE BEST books that I have read in a long while--the only sad thing about it is that it went by way too fast--I started it on a Saturday and finished it the very next night! It is such a wonderful story, and the seamless way the story and the characters are woven together is just incredibly beautiful! This story made me laugh; it made me think; and it brought tears to my eyes more than once! Elise, Bernice, and Annie and their families quickly became friends of the heart, and I simply can't wait to see what happens next in the town of Pritchett! It is refreshing to read such a rich and powerful story with characters who are REAL and are learning what it means to live in the fullness of God's grace and love throughout their everyday lives. This inspirational book is sure to be a blessing and an encouragement to Christian women in every season and walk of life!

Touched my heart

This was the story of a 40 year old wife and mom who's let bitterness take root in her life. Kathryn Springer does an excellent job of making a woman who could be very unsympathetic a very likable and human character. I was quickly drawn into Elise's life and mind. Generally not a fan of fiction written in 1st person I was surprised at how well it was done and how well it worked.

To say that I empathized with Elise would be an understatement, many of the issues she faces in the book (like looking forward and not back, having a real, dynamic relationship with God vs. a surface relationship) are issues I am currently facing myself. And reading a fiction book that touches on my current life issues is something I always enjoy. Reading about how Elise dealt with what was going on in her heart, life and mind really helped me to make forward progress on my own things. As an aspiring writer I think that's some of the highest praise you can give a writer.

I was so touched that the book really made a difference in my life. And I pulled out my bible to read more about the Proverbs 31 woman!

Also a huge plus for me was the fact that Christianity was not overplayed. It was simply another layer of several of the characters in the book, seamlessly woven into their making and very believable. Not once did I feel preached at and not once did I feel like I was reading someone else's opinion of what faith should be like and how it should be loved.

This book is an excellent read and I'd highly suggest it for any woman looking for a down to earth, honest look at marriage, parenthood and faith. Enjoy!

Loved it!!!

Well written, moving story of God's presence and love and plans for his children including a 40 year old woman who appears to outsiders to "have it all" but who isn't really convinced of that herself. Elise moves from a "see you on Sunday" relationship with the Lord to a relationship with God as a real presence in her daily life. The story isn't remotely preachy. The characters talk about God the way my friends and I talk about God. He's with us and he cares about everything that concerns us at all times. Every single character is lovable; you'll wish they were your flesh and blood friends so you could call them up and see what's going on with them today. I look forward to reading more about these characters in future books.

Absolutely Wonderful!

A small town where everyone knows everything about everyone, and one woman has dreamed her entire life about escaping Pritchett. Having won a beauty title in her teens, Elise dreamed of becoming a model or an actress. Life had different plans in the form of a handsome farmer. Elise settles reluctantly into small-town life, wanting more for her daughter. When her daughter enters Elise into a Mrs. Proverbs 31 pageant, Pritchett, Wisconsin pulls out the red carpet, complete with a parade and an ice cream social.

As Elise prepares for the pageant, she discovers much more about love, beauty, friendship, and God, learning to be content in her circumstances.

Front Porch Princess is a delightful read. Kathryn Springer has the reader running a gauntlet of emotions. Don't read this book unless you're prepared to not be able to put it down! Absolutely wonderful. - Cynthia Hickey, author

...to learn (or remember) what it is to be a girl from Hello Kitty's wonderful perpective! I am a little older than the target age group for most HK products, but I love and collect HK and was thrilled to see a nifty little book like this come out. I have given 3 copies away as gifts to my niece, sister and a family friend and am about to purchase another as a gift for another young lady because I think the information inside is so vital and perfect! It helps girls learn about who they are, rules of etiquette, and has lots of creative ideas to keep the mind sharp, all at a simple, fun & easy-to-read pace. Brilliant! (and worth every penny!) Moms & Dads, sisters & brothers, aunt & uncles, friends - whomever - should consider this item in their gift-giving pool.

I thought I'd picked a winner and was right. My 11 year old sister loved it.

The book is a good one, it has advice ranging from friendship, to fashion, and even a little nutrition thrown in for good measure. All of the info is solid, thoughtful and heartfelt.

A lot of kids seem to be raising themselves these days, either through family breakups or just a lack of attention. While nothing replaces solid advice from a loved one, books on being a young woman can be quite helpful in sorting out the things children deal with growing up. This one certainly is.

Cute, fun, and helpful. This is a great gift to show you care.

This book is better than any beauty magazine! I have tried to get this kind of stuff from Teen People and Teen, but Seventeen's How to Be Gorgeous is truly packed with good information. I used to be totally in the dark, now I feel very makeup-wise. However, it tends to be a little too much -- it seems like it limits everything. All of a sudden, I can't do anything that I used to do that I sort of liked. My lip gloss is fine and I've had it for seven months! Then they told me I had to trash it. I like it and I'm not breaking out! So it's a little prissy in that way. But it's still so awesome and cool and I love it!!

Eckhart Tolle cannot seem to fail when it comes to imparting to us exactly what we need to hear to make our lives better. Thank you! to my favorite spiritual teacher, for yet another gem in my consciousness. Is it, according to another reviewer, "re-packaged" material? Hey, what isn't? But it's the packaging and the soul of the packager that makes me want to listen, to hear, to stay right in the NOW instead of wandering away with my objectifying "pals" (those voices, voices, voices that add up to nothing in the long run). I love his "halting" phrases, phrases that make you lean forward to "hear" more...and to "hear" the stillness. Love, love, love - this man knows how to love the world. And he knows how to help us love more, too. I'll be playing this CD over and over, and passing it on to other friends who have discovered the joy - and the resulting love - of "inner space."

He's simply one of the most effective spiritual teachers on the planet, with the absolute best, most peaceful voice out there. If you're a seeker, seek here. If you're in pain, take these CDs and get some rest. If you're scared, use these to keep the Light on. Peace.

I have studied health, meditation and martial arts for 25 years. I have meditated with Saints and been to some of the best Ayur Vedic healers, Network Chriopractors, Reiki masters, in the world. Joseph can quickly and accurately give you all the answers you have been searching for. And explain why it is you have made so little progress with all the help you had recieved. This book is wonderfull in its ablity to explain simply some very complex ideas, and to inspire you to a pure vision of yourself. One you knew was there all along but were not able to quite reach. As the book describes, Joseph was born gifted and then stuided many years with masters of herbology, Indian martial arts etc, and has continued even further to work towards a real vision of "perfect health". I have bought 3 for myself and others. God bless Joseph Kurian.

From dieting, exercise, gyms and spas to plastic surgery, many of us are focused on beauty and happiness from the outside. Joseph Kurian shows us how to use our gifts from God--our bodies, minds and spirits--to become the most beautiful beings that we can be. From the inside out. So eloquently written, I found myself reading and re-reading each word to absorb as much as possible. Not only an interesting and educating read but a practical guide which I know I will use as my health "bible".

A client of Joseph Kurian's for the last few years, I instantly felt and saw the positive and life altering effects of Joseph's creams, herbs and oils and rejuvenation treatments. Now I fully understand the history and methodology of his work and why I now feel better than I can ever remember.

What a wonderful gift God has given us through Joseph Kurian. Please read Living in Beauty and pass it along to your loved ones--I have!

I highly recommend Living in Beauty. Joseph Kurian is a gifted healer and this book helps one have a better understanding of what he does and how it works. I am an educator. The section of the book that I found to be the most profound and validating is his section on children and their well being. I have intuitively felt that children need to be with their mother, who stays at home for at least a few years and ideally for many in order for them to have a good foundation for harmonious living. Joseph talks about how children do best when they are home their mother for at least one year and ideally for 3 years and are breast fed for a year and a half. He also adresses the issue of birth and talks about how placing the child on the mothers chest and not cutting the umbillical cord until after it stops pulsing really helps. My intuition tells me that these practices are more healthy and natural than what typically goes on in many hospitals in the United States. This book is a validation for what I have seen and have felt works best for children in order for them to feel secure and develop loving relationships. Read Live In Beauty! It helps one to understand a different modality of healing.

I found myself reading Joeseph Kurian's book almost non stop. I have read many of the current offerings in this area of Ayur Veda and Indian literature. This book is set apart by the living knowledge it provides for us to use on a daily basis to gain maximum health, beauty, and vitality. He ties together the connection between the individual and the universe we live in most clearly. Living in Beauty is simple and clear in describing the daily self help practices of this Vedic tradition. Marma science is the root and most powerful aspect of any of the Indian healing arts and J. Kurian is a true Master in that pure oral tradition of South India.

How to stay a goddess after forty

In general, this book is a fast page-turner. Joan Collins has gone a long way to prove how attractive women over forty can be in other books and, as if it wasn't enough, she makes her point again with friends rallying for support. This book is written in a very colloquial style which makes us privy to Joan Collins' intimate chats with her friends about beauty, fitness, life and love. It is a privilege to have the likes of Stefanie Powers, Shirley MacLaine, Ali Mc Graw, Morgan Fairchild, Shirley Bassey, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Shakira Caine or Angie Dickinson handing down to us the experience of a lifetime in the limelight. Yet, the most naive readers should beware of certain oddities like Ivana Trump's gobbling up over six eggs a day, Shirley MacLaine's fasting for over six days on apple juice or Jacqueline Bisset's phobia of fans kisses for fear of bacteria transmission. Despite which, the book is a winner.

I loved this book! It was such fun to be privy to the secrets of the rich and famous. You'll find that these women are not much different from yourself. If you are a woman who cares for and appreciates her looks and feminity, you'll savor every word. Beware: Divas of the world will enjoy the book most. If you are flippant or carefree about your looks and the aging experience, you'll find it shallow and boring. I for one felt as though I was sitting across the table with Joan and friends over lunch, revelling in our womanhood.

The Joy of Discovering "Generation Zest"

What a pleasure to learn from a book that revels in the vitality of life after 40! My Friends' Secrets contains 200 pages of stylish pictures and down-to-earth dialogue that reveal the beauty and health tips of some of the world's most striking women. Here Miss Collins and her friends share more with their readers than advice about living well; they embody a "philosophy of life" that underlines the power of positive thinking as a way to inner happiness and peace. The result is an outward radiance for the world to enjoy. The author's maxim, "After 40 you get the face you deserve", sums up the essence of this book - the women of "Generation Zest" can and do take charge of their own destinies and reap the rewards of aging with grace. In a world where some are inclined to accept lemons, Collins makes lemonade. This sentiment of making the best of things comes through vividly throughout the book. It is perhaps the reason why My Friends' Secrets is a treasure for any home library. The secrets of the women profiled here fire the creative imagination. Collins is evidently in her element as an interviewer; the conversations in My Friends' Secrets have more spark and intelligence than any talk show presently on television. In this volume, it's clear that the author's best gift to the public is her own multi-faceted personality. In short, My Friends' Secrets is a five-star read and a tribute to the habit of living and loving an interesting life.

There are some great tips from legendary beauties such as Ali McGraw, Ivana Trump, the ever beautiful Joan Rivers and from society hostesses such as the Texas beauty Lynn Wyatt the always gracious Betsy Bloomingdale. This book is a must have for anyone interested in health and beauty. The photos alone are worth the price of the book.

A very important book that should be mandatory reading for all educators, especially in middle schools, high schools, and colleges. Abuse and male privilege are far too common and even accepted by so many. Saving Beauty from the Beast is very readable and compelling. All school counselors should read this book. As a former victim of domestic violence I know what an uphill battle it can be as the victim is often blamed by the police and clergy. This book is a ray of light in a dark tunnel. I am grateful to its authors.

If you even SUSPECT that your child may be in an unhealthy relationship, please read this book! It contains so many insights that would have helped keep my daughter safe had I known. Out of ignorance we let her continue a breaking up and 'getting back together' cycle with a young man who we now know has been abusing her for almost a year. Fortunately, some friends convinced her to tell us, so we can help her get out safely, and make sure he gets the help he needs so that he doesn't do this to someone else.

Besides the many chapters for parents of abused girls, there is a chapter for parents of suspected abusers, and one for youth who suspect a friend is being abused. I feel so guilty that this has happened to my daughter, and the book addresses that as well. It also gives very practical information about how to set up safety plans, minimize the chances of his finding her new phone number, etc.

Dating abuse is so much more common than it used to be. This book is an excellent tool to help us protect our children. Every parent should know about the 'power and control spiral', the cycle of abuse, and the warning signs of potential abusers and abusive relationships, and educate their children about them as well.

a very good, informative book

This book is very well written and full of information regarding teen dating abuse. Crompton details the experiences of several teenagers who went through abuse (verbal, emotional, and physical) while providing a firsthand account of her daughter's difficult struggle. While Crompton did provide valuable information concerning identifying and quelling one's own daughter's entrance into an abusive relationship, I wish she had detailed more on how to PREVENT one's daughter from entering an unhealthy relationship (early child rearing, parental interaction, etc.)

In a 2003 "Montel Williams" show on dating violence, Vicki Crompton, co-author of Saving Beauty From The Beast, did more than plug her book, co-written with Ellen Zelda Kessner; she told the highly personal story of her daughter Jenny's murder at the hands of boyfriend Mark Smith, and offered advice to young women and parents torn apart by callous teenage boys, adolescent angst, parent-daughter conflicts, and a culture that, as the book points out, romanticizes forbidden love, taking what you want at any cost, love that hurts, and having a boyfriend.

Crompton, hand-in-hand with parenting author Kessner, has turned her daughter's shattering, unthinkable death into a brilliant, readable book that draws on real teenagers and their parents from all backgrounds, speaking in clear, intelligent voices, articulating the myriad pressures young women today face when involved in a love that hurts. Crompton and Kressner do not make light of peer pressure, or fail to note that the very rich and the very poor of today's youth are the most at risk to become abusers, or shrink from advising parents to "back off" and accept the relationship. The personal safety plan for daughters in abusive relationships, the safety plan for daughters who have left the relationship, the ingenious suggestion of a "code word" signaling danger, are useful tools. The coda of Crompton confronting Mark Smith in prison serves as a poignant reminder and incentive for all parents of teenage girls to read and share this book with their "Beautys."

Very helpful book. Wish we bought it sooner.

I recently bought several books on abusive relationships.

My husband (a very picky reader) has read many passages out loud to me from this one.

It is filled with many examples of abusive relationships that are unbelievably similar to what we have seen. We almost feel as if the authors know the young man we are concerned about.

The book is clearly written, provides good details and ideas on how to cope.

Buy this book before your daughter gets involved with an abuser, or at least at the first signs of an abusive relationship. You want to know, as early as possible, what can be going on.

The book is worth many times what it costs..

Don't look any further than this author. This is a top-notch resource for learning the details about uncommon fruits and vegetables in the American marketplace. Information is detailed and specific for each vegetable and fruit. A great buy!

I have the original of this book and find myself constantly reviewing it every time I come back from the tropical food markets. This book is very helpful even if one is familiar with and have grown up eating these kinds of fruits and vegetables. This book provides americanized recipes which is good because aside from being nutritious, most of these fruits and vegetables are beautiful and aesthetically presentable. You can serve fruits and vegetables that do not need to be masked by some gumbo-colored sauce. If you are the kind of cook who likes to serve beautiful dishes this book comes handy. You don't even have to follow the recipes just to use the vegetables. Once you become familiar with the vegetables you will discover how compatible they are with the common vegetables found in your regular supermaket on a dish of your own recipe. For example you could prepare a chicken dish with sliced tomatoes, potatoes, red and green bell peppers, carrots and bok choy with thickened chicken broth with your own choice of spices. The book details the following for each fruit and vegetable: Scientific name, description, beautiful illustrations, selection and storage, preparation and nutritional highlights.

Great book, but look into buying her brand new book first

I have an earlier edition of this book, and have really enjoyed using it. It includes background and the author's commentary on each fruit or vegetable (and, as one of the authors notes, not your "garden variety" fruit and vegetables, but unusual things like kumquats and quince that those of us who grew up on iceberg lettuce may not have encountered.) She also includes a sampling of recipes for each item. The recipes have the author's usual creative flair, and all the ones I have tried have been really great. But, unless I was really more interested in the fruit part of the equation, I would look into buying her new vegetable book first. It was just published in December 2001, and would therefore be more current. There has been so much change in bringing some of the more unusual foods to market that it may make most sense to have Schneider's most recent book.

Fascinating , informative, and much more than a cookbook!

I began to browse through Ms. Schneider's book because I had some unusual fruit on my hands that needed to be cooked. I became ENTHRAWLED by the fascinating information about vegetables and fruit from A to Z, but not our usual apples and oranges varieties. I couldn't put it down. I will be giving this book to everyone I know!
