What Can I Give You? is Mary Mahony's compelling account of one family's journey to understand the many aspects of their child's
chronic condition of scoliosis (curvature of the spine). Here is an intimate, candid, moving account of a mother's love for
her child, of a family's struggle to understand and deal with an medical condition that afflicts almost six million Americans
of all ages. Also highly recommended is Mary Mahony's There's An "S" On My Back: "S" Is For Scoliosis which she wrote for
pre-teen readers and presents Maisey MacGuire, a fifth grader diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis at a school screening.
This realistic fiction gives the young reader a day-by-day account of what children with scoliosis experience with respect
to peers, siblings, sports, camps, and the normal flow of a school day. Both books are recommended by the National Scoliosis
Foundation and commended by the Midwest Book Review for personal, school, medical center, social service agency, and community
library collections.

This book helps to give you a start in incorporating specific, known anti-cancer foods into your daily diet. The foods are
family-friendly and the dishes have drawn rave reviews from unsuspecting "tofu-haters". I especially like the section "Top
Ten Super Foods" that outlines ten particular foods that are essential in a cancer-fighter's diet. This book has been a
great addition to my arsenal in my 9 year old daughter's fight against cancer. If you comprehend the link between cancer
and nutrition, this book will give you tools to increase your body's ability to effectively fight cancer. I highly recommend
it!

Napoleon wrote this book from prison. [He had killed his very young son in a drunken rage. He does not discuss this in this
book, but I found this interesting and wish he had included and discussed this.]
Napoleon writes about the emotional trauma suffered by Alaska Natives since the point of contact with whites. He movingly discusses the impact of various addictions, deaths, and diseases for which this population was unprepared that have had a dramatic negative impact on the physical, emotional and spiritual life of most Alaska Natives today. He also offers several suggestions on what can be done to begin the healing.
There are few male Alaska Native writers in the state. For those that want to understand their experiences, I recommend this book.

My son was 21 when he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2004. We found Breaking the Vicious Cycle in 2006. It was
a godsend for my son. After being on the diet for a year or so, he was feeling like a new man, so much so that he went off
the diet. Needless to say, that didn't last long! He had a major flare-up of his colitis within weeks. He now knows that
this is going to be a life-long diet for his health and sanity. He "slips" every once in a while, but he's young and that's
to be expected. I highly recommend this book/diet to anyone with any kind of stomach/bowel/colon problems. If it helped
my son, it can help you, too!

Hello,
I had decided to write the review after reading and implementing [for my son] what book is suggesting.
My son developed colitis when he was 16 , after going through the doctors and pills we realized , that there must be the other way than taking medicine for rest of the life.
We spent a lot of time doing reaserch to find alternatives and came across a lot of information and this book - Breaking the vicious cycle- read the book , and with the proper diet [ our son is not taking pills anymore] he had not have a "flare-up" for 5 years.
I would highly reccomend this book - after reading - please "stick" to it.

My 18 year old son was diagnosed with UC in May and I was told it was lifelong and incurable and he would be on medicine forever.
That's when I fired the Dr. and found this amazing book. I am NO cook! We kept a journal of what he ate, bm's, cramps etc.
and I have a whole spreadsheet that proves it works. By day 7 he had no cramping at all, by day 27, regular bowel movements
returned.
I think it's absolutely retarded that Dr's say what you eat has nothing to do with your health........... who trains these people??

I bought this book because I was no longer digesting food normally. Nearly everything I ate was passing through unchanged,
and I was very concerned that I would be unable to work, enjoy going out for a normal life, not to mention what may happen
to my health if I could not digest food! Doctors/scopes were no help. There were no pathogens detected, and I do not have
any of the diagnoses listed by other reviewers; the only lead I have is that it seems the decade of nonstop NSAIDs damaged
the small intestine, not accessible with scopes. I've since learned from medical journals that NSAIDs rapidly ulcer the small
intestine in the vast majority of people. Anyway, I followed this diet, with very quick improvement. The references to actual
research was one of the things I appreciated. If a doctor doesn't "buy into" this program, I am ready with the proof! I also
don't think I ever would have figured out that starches were a problem if this book didn't clearly spell that out. It has
been half a year for me; healing this much damage does take time and I am not done, but as long as I follow the diet I do
very well. Regardless of the source of intestinal damage, it seems there is a similar healing process so this book is likely
to be helpful to anyone who needs to heal the intestines. I highly recommend this book. Best wishes for good health!

My wife was told she may have IBS so we decided to gather info and see about working on a better diet since it helps with
IBS. The challenge for us is she had limited tastes in food and adverse reactions to other foods. Once we got the book. she
scanned through it to discover maybe three recipes she would enjoy.
I would advise anyone considering this book to find a physical copy so you can see all the recipes and then decide if you want to buy it. Amazon has great prices, so come back here and buy it. My your local library might have it.

I love love love this book! Finally someone who knows what she's talking about and who truly understands the pain that we're
going through. The recipes are absolutely delicious and easy to make. I buy all the groceries for the recipes on the weekend
and then cook some meals for the coming week and keep them in the freezer. It's good to avoid the stress of worrying about
what to eat when there's no time to cook, and you're not sure what you can eat without dying from pain anyway. I can especially
recommend the Sweet Cinnamon Zucchini Bread and the Italian Lemon Tuna & Basil Salad. Yum, yum, yum... :-)

It is about 70% for attacks of IBS when it comes to food for me; however that 70% is reducing. This IBS cookbook was a blessed
find and money well spent. The recipes range from 'everday' meals to fancy dishes when having company.
Some recipes I have tried and absolutely melt for are:
- Louisiana Barbecued 'Catfish' sandwiches. (I followed the recipe and used the sauce on Tuna filets. Not a catfish person - those are 2 animals that should not cross breed)
- Jamaican Chicken with Ginger Peach Dressing (yum)
- Gingerbread
- Fettucine with Creamy Butternut Squash Sauce
The recipes are neutral, for additional special needs. They call for Soy based products, which is an added bonus for milk allergy.
The recipes are sometimes time consuming, but indeed, worth the effort. Having a guide with IBS friendly food allows for your own personal creativity.

This book can give hope to people suffering from IBS. It is full of useful tips and guidance for a pain-free life. The recipes
are fantastic and it certainly helps that the author herself suffers from IBS. Since I've read it and have been following
the strict diet, I have been a lot healthier and happier. It is better to follow a strict diet and be healthy than to think
you're eating "whatever you want" and being sick all the time. Even though the IBS diet is strict, this book has converted
many fabulous recipes with safe alternative ingredients-- the meals are safe and taste great too!

Hi,
Yes, many suggestions in this book works as prevention. But when IBS hits me, I finally found quick relief - via Acupuncture. Mayo Clinic's Dr. Sood listed Acupuncture as his top ten alternative medicine. Here is his write up: "In this treatment from traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncturists insert thin needles into strategic, energy-balancing points on the body. Acupuncture can prevent and treat nausea and vomiting and help relieve many types of pain, including that from osteoarthritis, low back pain, neck pain, headaches and postsurgical pain. Patients who receive acupuncture typically receive up to 12 treatments, usually given once or twice a week. " One word of advise - most acupuncturists are not good. Ours teach at a Eastern Medicine University in Sunnyvale, CA and he is honest and excellent.

I don't want to just repeat what so many other reviewers have already said. So suffice it to say that I also enjoyed reading
this book and have found a wealth of useful knowledge in it.
However, a few points that I haven't seen mentioned yet...
-- Insulin resistance increases a person's risk of heart disease. The authors awknowledge this and briefly suggest making food choices that reflect a "heart healthy" lifestyle. However, they also tell the reader not to worry about salt intake and many of the items on their food lists are very high in sodium. This is not at all heart healthy. Watching my salt intake is fairly easy, but it does add a layer of complexity to this plan that is not advertised.
-- The only focus of this book is weight loss. There is no mention of how to tweak the plan for weight maintenance. I am trying to reverse my insulin resistance (and PCOS), but I am not overweight. There isn't a single sentence in this book that addresses my situation.
-- There is a heavy reliance on artificial sweeteners. For those who do not use artificial sweeteners, a level of complexity is added to the plan.
-- One of the selling points of this plan is that there is nothing to count. That is technically true. But there is a lot of estimating to be done. Some people see great success with estimating and keeping things in their heads. I prefer to be a little more exact. Again, it's not hard to count carbs and proteins and keep track of calories (rather than estimating them), but it adds a level of complexity.
So, because I'm a bit of a perfectionist, I've made this plan a little more complicated than it was originally advertised. But I still enjoy following it and I hope to see my insulin resistance reverse over time.

on that. However, when I recieved the book, I found
that 10 pages had been torn out, of a pivotal section of
the book, the section dealing with diet and control.
The reason that I ordered the book to begin with. I
know that you can't read every book that you have, but,
this left me with a book that was useless.

They wanted to put me on medicine but I refused beliving that they had make a mistake with my test.
After reading this book I decided to buy a glucose meter and test it myself. The results really scared me and I was determined to bring the levels down. This book gave me hope that Diabetes can be reversed or at least controlled without medicine.
I am thankful that I chose to read this book and was enlightened by all of the valuable infomation that it contained.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever been diagnosed, I consider it a lifesaver.

This book provides a good diabetic solution and it should be read by non-diabetics to help them understand what is going on
within the food industry. It should probably be read in conjunction with the classic "Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine,"
edited by E. Braunwald & colleagues and "Alternative Medicine: The definitive Guide," edited by Larry Trivier, Jr. . The latter
provides a simple but good overview of the subject of alternatives. More details about alternatives are best understood be
reading Daniel Reid's "The Complete Book of Chinese Health and Healing" and "The Science of Homeopathy," by George Vithoulkas.
The former provides a thorough description of the comprehensive and thoughtful emphasis on individual wellness of Chinese
medicine while the latter provides the paradigm shift necessary to understand today's modern healthcare system.

what to eat in order to feed the cells and keep the body tuned to the max. The recipes are delicious, you will never be hungry,
and you will automatically lose weight you don't need. Don't walk - run to get this book.

I wish I had not wasted my time and money on this worthless book. If it has a face, according to the author, don't eat it.
That means, no fish, no poultry, no lamb no lean beef or any other high quality protein. My aim was to get away from prescriptions
that do not cure a condition, but simply relieves symthoms. However, this book advocates statins to control cholestrol something
that I would prefer to do via diet when you consider the many dangerous side effects of drugs especially the statins. When
Dr. Esselstyn stated that no oils including Olive oil was good for you, and went on to state that this monosaturated 'heart
healthy' oil should be avoided because it contained a small amount of saturated fat, I knew it was time to put down the book
and move on to a doctor---preferably and alternative physician---who knew his subject.

I'm a Type 2 Diabetic that has had great success following the dietary recommendations Dr. Bernstein puts forth. His pragmatic
diet has been a great help in moving my A1c down to the normal range. I've lost a needed 50 pounds. Overall, this book is
loaded with good information for diabetics.

It was only through Bernstein's book that I was able to appreciate the importance of maintaining a low carbohydrate diet if
I were to ever achieve "normalized" blood glucose and hope to avoid the long term complications associated with the disease.
Bernstein, first trained as an engineer, later as an M.D., offers a wonderful "nuts and bolts" approach to maintenance of
diabetes whether type 1 or type 2. His standard of control set the bar high where, in my opinion, it needs to be. I wish
that my Father, who died of diabetes complications, had been privy to his approach and had available to him the instant test
methods for blood glucose that are now available.

The best book I have ever read on the subject. The fact that Dr. Bernstein has lived, studied, and found solutions for this
disease makes this book a requirment. Anyone who wants to take command over this disease should get this book.
Thank YOU Dr. Bernstein!

This book was a wellspring of information for me as a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic. Getting off the cycle of being told
to eat complex carbs, seeing my blood glucose spike from doing just what I was told, and getting medications increased again
and again, I read what Dr. Bernstein said with interest. After trying his recommendations I can say with no reservations
that this book may have saved my life! I highly recommend it to anyone who has pre-diabetes or diabetes and hope that the
general medical community opens their eyes. After only one day of this diet my blood glucose readings were close to normal,
and continue to stay there, with less medication. My energy levels are high and I have felt better than I have in a long long
time. Kudos to you Dr. Bernstein, for daring to say the truth! I recommend both his books and also Dr. Atkins Diabetes Revolution
to anyone who wants to learn about diabetes and diet.
Best diabetes information I have found.......Required reading for all diabetics

I have done a lot of research on diabetes at the library and on the internet after I was diagnosed Type 2 in Aug 2007. I
saw the dietician/nutritionist recommended by my doctor and also real a ton of information on the internet and many books
from the local library. My fasting blood sugar when I was diagnosed was 311. I was able to get it down to 110 - 120 level
after dieting, exercising, and eating the things recommended by the dietician. My problem was my levels were erractic up
and down even when eating the same diet.
I saw Dr. Bernstein's book was highly recommended by Amazon readers, so I took the chance and bought the book. After reading that a diet of high proteins and very, very low carbs would help stabilize my blood sugars, I decided to try it. To my amazement, I started gettings readings in the mid 80's and the levels stopped spiking up and down. Carbs were my problem. Dr. Bernstein recommends an ideal reading of 83 and that is now my target.
This book should be a must read for all diabetics, both Type 1 and Type 2 people. My motto is "you can die from diabetes or learn to live with it," and I chose to learn to live with it. This book is a great learning tool and coupled with exercise (including weight training), weight loss and proper diet, you can control what happens to your body. It worked for me with results immediately.
Highly, highly recommended. If you have a friend or relative with diabetes, BUY this book for them. The author (Dr Berstein) is still a practicing physcian specializing in diabetes treatment. He is also a Type 1 diabetic. Dr Berstein's experiences lead to this book being published. It should be required reading for all diabetics.
