Moving stories for Animal Lovers
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-22
This lovely book by animal communicator Patty Summers contains moving stories from animals she met while developing her skills. As she learns to trust in her heart and intuition, she realizes that all beings, furred, feathered or scaled, all have something important to contribute. A gentle guide, she encourages the reader to acknowledge and celebrate all sentient beings.

While other books focus on technique (see anything by Marta Williams or Amelia Kincade), this one opens a wonderful world of possibility. If I have one quibble, it is that the messages from the animals at the end of each chapter sound alike...and an awful bit like AL Gore..but overall this is a heartwarming delight.

The author, Patty, shares her special spiritual gift with us, so we can all become more sensitive and in tune with what our animals are feeling and thinking. Will touch your heart, and raise your awareness of the intelligence and feelings of our "dumb friends". Toddler (and mom) Love it!

My 3.5yo daughter absolutely loves this book. She will recite a line from it to me and we'll go back and forth "playing out" the story. I just mention "there's a bird on your head!" and she will fall into fits of giggles.

My 2yo son was not as interested (though if it doesn't have construction trucks or diggers, etc, he's not interested either). I think as he gets older he will appreciate the humor and story.

Cute story & I bought more based on the success of this one. I recommend to my friends w/similar aged kids.

I bought this book based on the reviews of others. My daughter is 1½ and since we live abroad, I am trying to encourage her English skills and the book sounded funny.

She loves this book and can now count to three and say "hatching", although I am not quite sure how handy THAT word comes in...:-)
The book is always read at least three times and I enjoy it as much as she does - I can highly recommend this book.

A great book for reluctant "new readers"

My son is in second grade, does not like to read. Does not want to. This book "read itself". The repetitions were not tedious, and the story made him laugh out loud ---and me too.
He liked it so much, he made pictures of a little boy with a bird on his head, he put a bird beanie baby when he walked in to his classroom and told the teacher "there is a bird on my head"!
From this one, he was willing to read the other elephant and piggie, then more books.

Great early reader series

This series (Elephant and Piggie) is great for reluctant early readers! This is not the funniest of the series so far, but all of them include elements that help my child engage: slapstick humor, dramatic and funny banter, easy language coupled with sophisticated content. Hard to find combination.

Another great one from Mo

I really love Mo. He's awesome and has a way of connecting with both of my boys (ages 4 & 6), me, and the grandparents. The illustrations are great. It's perfect for my 4 year old. I would prefer more challenging reading for my 6 year old, but he loves it.

Enjoy!

This book comes with a cardboard mouse who slides through slots in the sturdy pages as he goes on his adventures. This is not a board book; the slots can tear if handled roughly but easily remedied with a little scotch tape. There is a template for a mouse, on the back cover of the book, so you can make another one if the original is lost. I made a spare for use while my daughter is younger and very rough with her books. The original started to peel a bit but that is easily fixed with a little glue. So although this is a fairly sturdy book it is not indestructible. My two year old loves this book.

This is a delightful and fun interactive book! I've owned a copy for many years and my five-year-old just recently pulled it out and has shown interest in reading along with the captions in the book. He loves moving the mouse in and out of the pages. I find that him being able to move the mouse around has helped him pay attention to the story.

We lost the fist mouse but were able to trace the one on the back cover to create a new mouse. We've since ordered other copies of Richard Fowler's books. They are all cute books but this one is our favorite.

I bought this book on an impulse, simply based on the brightly colored illustrations and a brief refrain that that appears when you look inside the book. I couldn't be more delighted with this purchase. The book is a wonderful addition to my fairy tale library and my kindergarten kids absolutely LOVE listening to and participating in the retelling of the story, especially the rhyming refrain..... "I'm a troll from a deep dark hole - my belly's getting thinner. I need to eat and goat's a treat - so I'll have you for my dinner!".

PS - I agree: How lame that Amazon has mixed together reviews for all these various versions of "Three Billy Goats Gruff." They are all so different and all by different illustrators and authors!

Anyway, this is a comment about Marcia Brown's 1957 version, which I found to be incredibly gory. Rather than merely knock the troll off the bridge, this billy goat gruff graphically dismembers him, poking out his eyes and reducing him to "bits, body and bones." Yuck! There are other, mellower version out there... This one's not a favorite. (ReadThatAgain!)

Nancy Levine never ceases to amaze me with her awesome photographs of the pugs (and a new "guest" dog) and her great stories. This book is perfect for any pug or other dog lover, adult and child alike. It is rare that books come out to satisfy both the adult and the child and this is one of those exceptional books.

The humor is infectious and the photography superb, as always. We'll be keeping our eyes out for the next adventure!

This reviewer recently adopted a Basset-mix puppy (that's him on my profile page) from a shelter/rescue (and encourages all of you reading this to consider giving a rescue/shelter dog a home, too!) It appears that my puppy is a Basset/Coonhound mix. Which brought to mind the question - how, logistically, could a Basset and Coonhound mix? You will be pleased to know that this fun photo story does NOT answer that question.

Once upon a time, Wilson the Pug, descendant of Pug-tzu, "author" and star of The Tao of Pug, fell in love with Hedy, who was "unlike the other pugs I'd met before. With her big floppy ears, prominent muzzle and huge paws, she was a vision of lovliness." Time passed. And Wilson saw his love no more. He went to her house. And " "a huge dog, the biggest I'd ever seen!" appears at the door. Oh My! A Mastiff! But gazing into her big brown eyes, "I got a whiff of her sweetly biscuited breath." It's Hedy stuff! She isn't a homely pug - but a marvelous mastiff!

Our hero and heroine may be parted by humans - unless the dogs come up with a Taoist plan! The words and photos along the way will charm children and dogs of all ages.

My original quandry remains unanswered after the Afterward by Wilson: "Fortunately, I was a neutered pug, because Hedy and I felt strongly that the world did not need a new breed of mastug or pugstiff."

Great resource for any future and present owner

I bought the first edition of this book about 11 years ago when I purchased my second Rott. Every dog owner owes it to their dog to be well informed about their dog's requirements, quirks, health issues, thraining requirements and characteristics - and this books gives you the info you need. For Rottweiler owners it is even more important to understand your breed because a Rottie out of control just reinforces the stigma attached to the breed - and they can be dangerous. Rotties are wonderful dogs and after owning Rotts for more than 20 years I have learned a lot of do's and don'ts. Do yourself a favor read this book before you get a Rottie and you and your dog will be so much better off. It includes wonderful advice on training and anything you should know to make sure your dog is well socialized, healthy and sane. I loved this book for its well rounded advice and explanations on the differend breed standards based on geography. It's basic enough for the beginner to get lots and lots of good advice even if you don't want to breed or show. Be aware of the downsides of the breed, health issues and the associated cost, exercise requirements, top dollar for good diet - it makes your dog live longer and healthier. Rotties, especially males, need a firm handler, NOT a brutal one but one that they can look up to. They are not a beginner dog and too many of them end up at the pound because yet another person thought they could have one without dedicating the right amount of time. If you want one, read this book first and then think twice. If you are sure you can take on the challenge, you will be rewarded with the most loyal friend you can imagine!

It is a good sized book with lovely photography also. If you are looking for one book to cover all aspects of your Rottweilers life and history this is most definitely the best one. Have you ever thought of a cow in a cat's point of view? Well in the book Upchuck and the Rotten Willy you will find a lot of things in a cats point of view. In Chuck` s point of view if you haven't eaten spaghetti you haven't lived.
Have you ever just sat on a fence all morning telling jokes? Just hanging out with friends. If not, Chuck will tell you all about it. In this book at times I think Chuck talks and thinks like a person. He thinks about things that most people wouldn't thing twice about.
This book is really funny in the first part of the story when the 2 friends (Tom & Chuck) make fun of the dogs at the park. "Why are dogs noses so flat?" " From chasing parked cars."
If you like animals, horsing around, or if you like spaghetti this is the right book for YOU!

The book also kept us both in stitches. We would read paragraphs over and over just to get a good laugh! It was wonderful time together laughing and learning about what life as a cat would be. I loved the parts where the cats would make fun of the dogs.

This is such an amazing and wonderful book of photos taken by Art Wolfe. "Vanishing Act" refers to the natural camouflage of living beings as they blend into their environment, as a means of self-preservation.

Honestly, I have had to look at some of the pictures 3 or 4 times before I could locate the animal, insect, bird, etc. that was lurking there. There is a "cheat sheet" in the back of the book, but I am determined to locate these creatures without resorting to outside help.

It is so amazing that I could look at a large picture 3 or 4 times and not see what I was looking at; however, once you see it clearly you can't understand how you could have missed it in the first place. Isn't nature grand? I have two of Art Wolfe's works hanging on my walls and they are the first things commented on by any visitor to my home.

Buy this book!

When I brought it to work, a common response was, "Very cool ... Can I borrow this book overnight to show my husband/wife?" I need to e-mail Art Wolfe to ask him if I could represent him on his next creative effort. That way his work will achieve wider distribution and recognition.

We first got this book from a library. We had to extend it after 30 days, because we have to read it at least twice per evening. My son sometimes requests for us to read it 5+ times in the evening. My son is 2 1/2 years old and has the entire book memorized. The book has great details: the blue balloon, the spider, etc. The illustrations are amazing. This is the favorite book for our family. We recommended this book to family members and few friends. Sometimes my son wakes up in the morning, and his first words are "Wolf's coming", not "Mommy" or "Daddy".

Let's get one thing straight: Erasmus Twiddle is not a detective. Anyone can be a detective these days just by saving the correct number of proof of purchase seals or bottle caps. Erasmus wants nothing to with any of that disreputable lot and would thank me for making the distinction quite, quite clear. This does not mean that Erasmus is adverse to solving a mystery every now and again. In fact, he enjoys it. Since Erasmus if only a little older than you are, he isn't the person you call if something really big goes wrong---kidnapping for instance---but if your rubber chicken goes missing or if your soggy dumpling refuse to become soggy enough, Erasmus is the one you want. He'll come in and use all his special non-dectective powers of observation to help. That's why he's the most famous non-dectective in Grmkville, if not the world.

A collection of fourteen short mysteries, THE ADVENTURES OF ERASMUS TWIDDLE is a good book to take along to read when you have a little time in your jammed packed social schedule. When your Mom is late picking you up from soccer practice or she drags you to the supermarket and all the lines are rrreeeaaallllllyyyy long. The stories themselves are chock full with character with names like Bagley Butterbottom (AKA Andrew Michaels) Erasmus's friend and sidekick---that is when he isn't too busy being a pirate. But the best thing about the stories is you can solve the mysteries if you read carefully and use your own special powers of observation. I look forward to seeing more of Erasmus in the future.

O.K., so it is a little inane. It's also a lot of fun, especially read aloud. My son is on his second listening, and loves to giggle as we go along. What's nice for little kids is that there are no scary parts, but there is still suspense. And I love the little girl with her personal weather system.

My rather inane kids loved it!

good thing the publishers weekly reviewer has a day job, cause he'll never make it as a judge of what kids like (he said the book was 'rather inane'). my 4 kids loved it, but then again, what would they know - they're just kids.

I think this book is really funny. The Auther puts the book in
fun to read storie, and the people in the cases are funny too.
You buy the book, you read it, then you thank your lucky stars that you read it!

I thought it was humorous and exciting. It is a good mystery book. It is so good you could read it twice and find new things to laugh about.
