A wonderful bedtime story for young children. My little one loves the relaxing poem with the beautiful pictures. The story tells a valuable lesson of caring for those around you. She calms down and goes to sleep very quickly after reading this story. My 2 year old demands to be read "Fairy Market" before any nap or bedtime. She loves it.

This has been a favorite in our house for 20+ years. With our first child and now with our youngest. The pictures are wonderful, your child will love finding new things every time they read the book. And the messege that is taught, each time the fairy purchases a new animal and then sets it free after she admires it or when she shares her coat with the frog so he can stay warm. The message of caring for others is expressed in an easy to understand way. Great book for children and adults to share.

I can sum up this book in one word--exquisite!
Whilst there aren't actually a lot of words in it, every picture is definitely worth a thousand of them. What text there is, however, is poetic, poignant and full of worthy lessons for children about how rewarding looking after animals and nature can be, without being at all preachy. Tying in beautifully with those words, Jamichael Henterly's lush illustrations are some of the best I've ever seen--this illustrator's attention to detail will keep you looking at those pictures for hours, finding new and wonderful things all the while.
This may be a book for small children, but even if you don't have a child, read it anyway! It's like comfort food for the soul.

I must admit that I had never even heard of this series until a month or so ago (I'm nearly 45). I hate that I missed out on these as a kid, but the kid in me is greatly enjoying them now. They are a joy to read.
The only negative that I see is the fact that so much time has passed since these books were written, some of the vocabulary and vernacular present in the books will be unfamiliar or have a much different meaning to kids of today. However, the gentle humor and the life lessons present throughout the Freddy series are ageless, and well worth your money and your children's time. Highly recommended.

Originally published in 1928, this is the first of about a dozen children's books starring Freddy, a clever young pig with a taste for adventure. If you are looking for books for little kids that aren't too scary, too violent or laden with issues such as peer pressure, etc., this is a very good option. The story is a little slow-moving, but it's still clever and engaging, and other than a little bit of sexism (a barnyard rooster in henpecked by his wife) this holds up remarkably well for a story written before the Great Depression. Lots of different animals make up the cast, so if you are reading it aloud, there are good opportunities for doing different voices, etc. And, if you liked this first book, there are plenty more to follow. This is book 1 of the Freddy series (note that it was not originally published with this title, and Freddy is not as much the focus as in later books). These stories of the adventures of the intelligent and sociable animals on the Bean farm are beautifully written, and have some dramatic tension but nothing over the top (no Moms are killed in these stories, unlike Disney's favorite ploy...). The stories introduce some wonderfully adult concepts (like politics, banking, running a business) with well-crafted characters that will broaden a child's understanding of what makes people tick.

In 1955 I was eight, and the eldest of three brothers. My mother couldn't go to the grocery store with all of us so she'd drop me off at the children's room at the West Hartford, CT, public library, and pick me up on the way home. It was there that I discovered Freddy, and that pig spoke my language! It was Freddy, his wonderful compatriots on the Bean farm, and their fabulous adventures, that started me out right. Freddy Goes to Florida is the first of the series, and is where I recommend starting your own adventures with Freddy the Pig. Hats off to Overlook Press for re-publishing these books in their original look.

FRIENDS TO THE END is an inspirational picture book about friendship. The book contains all kinds of pictures of animals, mostly in pairs, reflecting the various ups and downs of life, the importance of friendship, and the joy of lifelong friends. The book is a bit, too sentimental for my tastes, but my mother gave it away as a small momento to one of her friends and she loved it.

I first came across the Frog and Toad books when I was working in a second grade classroom. There was one boy in the class who was reading below grade level and was a very reluctant reader until he was introduced to the Frog and Toad books. He loved them. He liked the fact that with several stories in one book he felt as though he was reading a chapter book. He liked that although the books were easy to read they were not babyish.
This year my pre-school son has discovered the same books after seeing the DVD of the Frog and Toad musical. He is delighted that he can read the books with just a little help.

Recently my father dragged out our old Frog and Toad books and started reading them to my daughter (26 months) when she was over. She LOVES Frog and Toad!
I suspect half the story goes over her head but she loves them anyhow, and I'm sure she'll love them more when she actually "gets" the whole story. She'll drag out the books all by herself some days and sit on the floor flipping through them saying, '"Frog, Frog!' cried Toad' and telling me what's in the pictures.

I bought a our first Arnold Lobel book based on the drawings and the layout. It looked appropriate for my son who is 5. It became a favourite on the first reading and we have bought and read many more since. This collection is full of playful, original stories that bring to mind television shows like Little Bear and Franklin.
These stories have fueled hours of laughter and delight. I recommend them highly along with other Lobel books like Mouse Tales and Mouse soup; they are the perfect length for bed time. The topics and themes about everyday conundrums, serendipity and friendship are entertaining, thought provoking, and a gentle and amusing way to suggest to young minds what it means to be a good friend.

I first saw an article on Little and Lewis in a gardening magazine and had to have this book. I was mesmerized by what they had done.
The sculptures, greenery and landscaping are absolutely exquisite. I bought a copy of the book and sent it to a gardener friend of mine and he raved about it, also.
I think this book would appeal to fine arts people who are into gardening--people who want to create their own statuary, garden sculptures and unique landscaping and who need a creative impetus.

Imaginative and full of pictures. I can't imagine a better gift if you have a gardener on your Christmas list.

This is the fun stuff: "Going for the Bronze: Still Bitter, More Baggage" by Sloane Tanen is a sequel to "Bitter with Baggage Seeks Same: The Life and Times of Some Chickens." This is a hilariously silly, irreverent little picture book of chicken peeps posed with miniature props in "human" settings.
Alongside the yellow chicks are tiny props such as food items, books, hats and cell phones. The brightly colored dioramas include cars, doll furniture and even a SWAT helicopter. Venues range from a coffee bar to the Grand Canyon. It's all a sort of bizarre cross between "Thomas the Tank Engine" and "Sex and the City."
This is NOT a children's book, as it features adult situations and language. The captions are just plain nutty. Some are subtle, some are outrageous, and at least one I didn't even understand. But they are so much fun!

At the time I read this book, I thought that this would be a romance, but it was nothing like that, just dramatic. I picked up this book because we recently got two hermit crabs and I wanted to learn more about taking care of them. While this book was among the more helpful I've come across on the subject, I was hoping it would be more detailed. Everything in it was useful, and it helped me know what to do for the basics, but I want to go a little more advanced.

With there not being out the in pet stores on how to care for your hermies, this book is very helpful for the novice owner or even for a brush up for someone more experienced. I like to try and read as much as I can. It explains the background of the species as well as how to care for them properly. Thru that, it shows that they are NOT just a disposable pet to live in a little plastic container w/ a 1/4 inch of sand :-( hopefully someday that philosophy will change. They are so interesting and can live a very long time if taken care of properly. It is only a lot of work if you do not have the time.

A Home For A Bunny was my son's all-time favorite book. We read it over and over again. Now my son is nearly 27, and I still have the same book and read it to his 5-year-old-daughter, whom I am raising. It was her very first book and she demanded it be read every single night. We had fun using different voices and she especially liked the happy ending. She decided that the bunnies were a "Mommy Bunny and a Daddy Bunny", and would kiss them goodnight each time.
I highly recommend this book! I buy one every chance I get, whenever I know someone is going to have a baby.

I purchased this book (my first "big" little golden book) and love the larger size and pictures. My two-year-old daughter loves this book and often picks it from her huge selection of books. A great sweet story to share. I'm now looking for more "big" little golden books to buy.

This book is such a sweet, cute book. I am 24 years old and still read it to my nieces every once in a while. I have grown up making my parents read me this book over and over again every night and day. My copy is worn out but it also shows how much I enjoyed it. I hope you decide to buy it and read it to your children they will love it!

I read this book 20+ years ago to my two children and it was their favorite and most requested Little Golden book. It is such a sweet and well illustrated book. My only regret is that I didn't keep it over the years because I now had to go on a search for another copy for my brand new grandchild. My new copy of "Home for a Bunny" will be extremely well used, I'm sure!
What a great, sweet book!

This is such a sweet little book! Probably not much past age 5, but the story has a bunny looking for a place to stay or a home of his own. He proceeds to ask everyone he meets if he can live with them and they all say no. However, when he meets a little white bunny, the bunny takes him in and they then live together. The last picture is just so sweet with the two bunnies snuggling together. The illustrations make you touch the page because the bunny looks so fuzzy! It is very much loved in our house and we highly recommend it!

This is the most complete, concise medical handbook for horse owner's I have found on the market today. It details everything from small medical maladies to major sicknesses and illnesses. It walks you through reproduction and everything you need to know for your pregnant mare too! The language was easy to understand and stated in basic layman's terms, so even if you are a first-time horse owner you can understand the terminology used, but it is also detailed enough for the avid, experienced horse owner. This book comes highly recommended!!

While the authors obviously know their stuff, I found it hard to read given the excessive and slightly archaic verbage; I would've preferred something much more consise, perhaps in a "bullet" fashion, rather than a tome.
a must have for any horse owner

No book is a subsitute for a licensed veterinarian. Now having said that...
I've had this book for years and wouldn't be without it. It got me through my first foaling and also caring for that foal (including vaccinations). While I've not read this book front to back, the signs & symptoms section in the front is invaluable. The chapters are easy to read, yet they are informative and allow you to ask intelligent questions of your veterinarian when it becomes necessary for them to be there.
My mother recently bought her first horse and this book was the first thing I told her to go get.

This is a well-organized, easy to undertand book for all horse owners. When I saw the size, I was daunted, but have found it to be helpful in understanding and tending to health issues with our horses. This should be on every horse owners bookshelf!
