An inspiring book on the authoress' view on Reiki. She describes some meditative practices that are interesting and rewarding, among them a meditation where you get to meet Usui, Hayashi and Takata. The book also contains influences from Shamanism with the exorcism of entities and energies. Where Diane Stein fails completely (IMHO) with her fear of psychic attacks in her book on "Essential Reiki", Karyn Mitchell takes an entirely different approach and, instead of continuing to build up fear, shows us how to deal with it rather than add to the problem. This is great.

The only downside I found with this book was the chapter on manipulation of food which to me felt out of place and sounded very exaggerated. Even though Mitchell is trying to be informative this really takes the rate down for me. Maybe we don't have the same problems with food manipulations here in Sweden... at least not yet and never will I hope.

I enjoyed this book and since I read this book about 2 years ago my Reiki path have moved into Tibetan mysticism and Zen so I really look forward to reading "Reiki Mystery School" by the same author.

Worth tracking down

This is the famous "Blue Book" of the Reiki Alliance. If you are not a member of the Alliance, this book is worth tracking down. It contains some excerpts from Hawayo Takata's diary, as well as contributions from two of her twenty-two master students, Paul David Mitchell and Phyllis Lei Furumoto, Takata's granddaughter. Although the booklet is very short, it is heartwarming to read Takata's personal understanding of the Usui System of Healing.

This booklet also provides the classic parable about Usui's life. While we know it to be only a story, for anyone who would like a concise version that is true to Takata's retellings of it, the Blue Book is a good investment.

A good introduction

This book gives some background, and a good deal of introductory information, on the Chinese art of QiGong. It is well illustrated, and it's small, pocket size makes it ideal for when you're on the go. It is by no means a be-all, end-all book on QiGong, and I would not even recommend it as the first book you should pick up if you're new to QiGong, but it does serve as an adequate introduction.

There are a few things I dislike about this book. For starters, they spend a lot of time (and pages) on a long White Crane form, instead of introducing readers to simpler, more approachable exercies such as The Eight Pieces of Brocade. Also, having all of the models in this book dress alike makes them look like cult members (the chick with the crew cut doesn't help)!

If you're new to QiGong, I recommend "The Way Of QiGong" by Kenneth Cohen instead.

The book does contain nice clear drawings of the relevant meridians and a good introduction to chi kung, but I think it would take a determined person to perform the described practices from the text. The author does state clearly that it is not his intention that people be able to practice from this book without other instruction, however through no fault of the authors that information is not presented on the amazon.com page with the book description.
I think this would be very useful as a reference to someone who has taken classes and seen the techniques, otherwise I would not recommend it.

Having experienced Tantra and trained in Reiki, I was disappointed that a stronger connection or a deeper relationship between the two was not explored. Even if you have not experienced Tantra and understand Reiki, I don't think the reader will be any more educated. Granted, both energies are difficult to explain, so any dialogue offers a valid opportunity to expand information.

Disappointing if you're looking for "real deal" Reiki

Waites started out well, describing how he was drawn to what he was told was "Reiki." However, after that point, the book goes downhill. I am a Reiki teacher in several branches of Reiki, but I've never seen some of the practices the author describes as "Reiki" in this book. Since he and his teacher also studied in India, perhaps it's a hybrid of Reiki and something else.

Originally I bought the book to study the marma points, but upon further study, I see the ones illustrated in the book are not accurate, either.

So, for me, the book was a dud. Look to other authors for more realistic Reiki information.

I am so glad that this was my first book to read on Reiki. A practical guide it is for sure (128 pages). It is a brilliant book from cover to cover.

The author, Reiki Master, Mr Bill Waites relayed to me a thorough, yet simple account of Reiki, what it is and it's FIVE PRINCIPLES, how a Reiki treatment is performed, what is first and second level Reiki? Reiki hidden secrets, Reiki and Reincarnation, and Reiki-inspiring love. Through his description of events leading up to his becoming a Reiki Master, his sessions with his students, and his personal stories he made me feel like I was there with him experiencing every moment.

I felt like I got first hand knowledge (since the author travelled to Asia to learn from a true Reiki source, namely Master Naharo) of the true sense of how Reiki heals, what is a true Reiki Master and what I should expect and look for when registering for a Reiki Certification course. I felt so connected to the author through his writings that I don't believe that I would want to take my Reiki Certification from anyone other than him or someone that he himself trained to be a Master. If necessary I will travel out of country to do this.

I have since read another Reiki book and have looked at many Reiki books at the bookstore, but nothing has affected me like Reiki, A Practical Guide and Reiki Master, Bill Waites. Since this is my opinion, and as you can see it is quite different from the reviewer from Boulder Colorado, I urge those interested in Reiki to read this book for themselves and form their own opinions. I hope you are affected as I have been.

A Poor Book

I found the first few chapters of this book to be interesting. However, for the last 100+ pages the author deviates from the Reiki system entirely and discuss topics that have no relationship to the system of Reiki. He talks about his attunements (initiations) which are unrecognizable, how the symbols the students receive are made up to fit the particular student's personality/being, that spiraling your hands down the body is how to do a Reiki treatment, etc. (And it gets worse and worse.) I was shocked to even find a book like this with the name Reiki on the front cover! :( I have read about 35 Reiki books and have been a practicing Reiki Teacher for almost 3 years now. I recommend Traditional Reiki For Our Times by Amy Rowland and any of Frank Arjava Petter's books on Reiki. Good luck and happy Reiki-ing! :D

It's about selling more books, not passing on knowledge!

As a 35-yr. Tai-Chi pratitioner/instructor (alumni of Robert W. Smith and Sifu Willy Lin's schools) and martial artist competitor/instructor (Jiu-Jitsu & Krav-Maga), I found Mr. Chia's, "The Inner Structure of Tai Chi: Mastering the Classic Forms of Tai Chi Chi Kung", very detailed and profound. However, since acquiring fame and fortune from his Iron Shirt Chi Kung book and tapes, Mr. Chia seems to crank out one or two books a year, which only scratch on the surface of what could be valuable knowledge. His now ever-present disclaimer that, "in order to benefit from the teaching in his publications, one should be training with a Mantak Chia certified instructor and/or buy more of his books" should raise a cautionary flag to the serious inner essential energy seeker. Having attended one of his weekend workshops last year in Teresopolis, Brazil, I can attest to the fact that, while his multi-media slide show presentation was interesting (albeit, a bit long and winded!), the Tai-Chi portion of his clinic was so sad, it was laughable... to put it mildly! This book is a re-hash of familiar concepts packaged within a new cover and not worth the money. If the reader would like to get more technical about the nurturing and expansion of his chi force, I would recomend checking out "The Healing Promise of Qi: Creating Extraordinary Wellness Through Qigong and Tai Chi" by Roger Jahnke!

Misleading

I bought this book and one other by the same author expecting to get some useful information. Both books however begin with an introduction that none of the material in the books should be used unless you are already being trained by a qualified Tan Tien Chi Kung teacher. If I was already under instruction, I wouldn't need the books, yes? The introduction further states you must buy more of the books as these two books build on exercises in these other books. None of this was mentioned in the book reviews on Amazon.

New material that's been hard to find

Complaints that the info here is prefaced with the caveat that it's best learned one-on-one are understandable. If you don't have a good teacher and you hope to learn from a book, the disclaimer could be frustrating. That said, it's almost impossible to deeply grasp the subtleties of a physical discipline like tai chi or nei kung just from reading. But this book can deepen one's practice and understanding or offer a good foundation until one finds a teacher.

Disregard the "empty force" in the subtitle. This book is a collection of nei kung exercises that I have seen before only from one-on-one training. Most of the exercises have been needlessly cloaked in secrecy by teachers who deemed them suitable only for advanced students or those who had spent enough time (and money) to be considered worthy. Chia presents his version of them, and his sequence. They are designed to cultivate chi and corral it into the dan tien in a more vigorous way than softer chi kung sets. As such the exercises here are generally thought of by tai chi practitioners as belonging more to "martial" nei kung exercises--exercises designed to cultivate a body capable of withstanding blows and capable of generating powerful strikes. Whether you believe they work is an open question.

If you are new to tai chi/chi kung/nei kung and are interested chiefly in learning it for health and relaxation, this book isn't necessary. If you have a keen interest in the topics and enjoy reading about them, by all means, it's worthwhile. And if you're interested in the more vigorous, possibly "martial" aspects of it, this book is a valuable addition.

P.S.: I took a workshop with the author once and, unlike another reviewer, found it useful. Chia's material always strikes me as authentic, though there's such an abundance of it you have to take what's useful and leave the rest. Some of his books are among the most valuable works on the subject one can find, and he was the first to offer much previously "secret" info in English.

I found this book to be very fascinating. It may be entitled "male sexuality" but there are many references to "female sexuality" too. In fact, it goes into how individuals have male and female characteristics and how that relates to who they are "being" in their lives. I found it to expand my mind and understanding. I recommend this book to open minds who want to better understand themselves and others.

Very disappointing

When I picked up "Earth Honoring: The New Male Sexuality" I was full of hope -- perhaps this would be a book that truly challenged the status quo of sexuality. If this were merely a philosophical text, I could bite my tongue and say that some people will find it offensive while others will not. However, the book attempts to be both scientific and academic and it fails at both. Historical facts, mytholigical reconstructions, and scientific studies are all clearly misunderstand at the best and falsely presented at worse. Ultimately we end up with a very old male sexuality -- one built on biogical determinism, anti-homosexual and anti-bisexual feelings, with a strong dose of stereotyped sex and gender roles. I was deeply disappointed.

Reiki is a word comprised of two Japanese words, ?Rei? meaning universal and ?Ki? meaning ?life force/energy? when combined the work means ?Universal Life Force?. Reiki has its origins in ancient Tibet, some scholars say it is at least 5,000 years old. Over time the technique was forgotten. However, in the late 1800?s, it was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Monk. In the last 5 years there has been phenomenal growth in the number of people learning and using Reiki worldwide, some estimates put the figure at over 1 million practitioners.

The author, Teresa Collins is highly experienced both in conventional and complimentary medicine. She is a fully qualified Physiotherapist who worked professionally for many years in Canada before returning to practice and teach in Ireland. The book covers all the essential of aspects of Reiki training from beginner to Master level and it?s clear, concise style makes ?Reiki at Hand? a valuable resource for students and teachers alike. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about this ancient and powerful healing technique.
