A book loaded with great & useful information. A lot of research has been undertaken on the history of Reiki & presented in this book. It is very interesting to see the difference in traditional Japanese Reiki & what is in the West today. I find this book to be an excellent reference. Thanks go out to the authors.

Even though I was already a Reiki Master when I read this book, I learned some wonderful things! A well thought out book of history and details (I especially love the early section with illustrations covering the order of strokes for writing in Japanese characters) that will help Reiki students of all levels. I never want to stop developing with Reiki and this book certainly furthered my education! Well done and many thanks!!!!

Since beginning my journey into Reiki, I have come to realize that although the actual act of doing Reiki is easy (anyone can do it), that if you really want to delve into the practice you have to go searching for answers. Along the way, I have come across a number of very good resources and have developed some favorite authors, persons who I expect quality research that informs me about various Reiki subjects while also presenting their information in a way that will actually help me grow as a person, as a practitioner, and as a Reiki Master. Quite a tall order, indeed.

Bronwen and Frans Stiene are at the top of this list. Their work is consistently well-informed. I also find their topics quite interesting. More importantly, I find it easy to translate what I read in their books directly to my own growth and purposes.

The Reiki Sourcebook is a great general resource that should be on every Reiki practitioner's bookshelf. Topics explored range from basic information and the history of Reiki through courses and an explanation of the complexity of lineages to specific Japanese and Western Reiki techniques.

Very impressed with The Reiki Source Book. This book discusses the original Reiki. It is a well balanced presentation that brought forth many of Usui's original intentions of being a spiritual path as well as a method of healing. It did an excellent job of presenting the paths of Reiki that had developed over time. Quite an eye opener. All paths are presented with respect and balance. This book had wonderful explanations that help the reader gain a new perspective.

Bronwen and Frans Stiene wrote an intriguing work entitled "The Reiki Sourcebook," which consist roughly 350 pages and four parts and appendices. The authors did a wonderful research into the history of Reiki as well the Western and Japanese Reiki techniques. Not only that, they also discerned and discussed the difference between traditional (Usui Method) and non-traditional knowledge of Reiki, and touched upon the origins of each.

I found this book to be strongly resourceful and insightful on the subject of Reiki. Personally, I had never taken a Reiki class and only heard of the term in passing. I came upon this book as both curiosity and of possible interest in pursuing this teaching. Of this book, I found it to be strongly helpful for a beginner of Reiki or just someone (such as myself) who seek to know more about the Reiki system.

This book is well worth the effort and worth the read as it is literally packed with information on the subject, and I found it to be quite informative.

A Helpful book on Chi Gung

Review Date: 2008-09-26
I've really been enjoying this book and feel that its non-traditional approach is helping me to get a better understanding of what Chi Gung is all about. I also like how the author, Lily of the Valley Carnie, writes as if she is talking directly to me and sharing the experiences she's had in her 30+ year practice of Chi Gung.

She begins by covering the basic concepts of Chi Gung like the ways that Chi flows through the body and the different breathing methods you can use to generate Chi. I found her discussion on the differences between Wai Dan training which uses movement to generate Chi and Nei Dan training which develops Chi through mental focus and awareness to be very helpful to me.

The rest of the book deals with ways you can include Chi Gung in various activities and to me it felt like one big Chi play chest. You can find topics like improving your sense of smell, or working with a Tai Chi ball or increasing your awareness of the movements you make while drawing a picture.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who'd like to learn more about Chi Gung from a truly engaging teacher.

Interesting Read.

This is the only book I have read on the subject so I cannot compare it to other ones. It was not written for someone who wants to learn how to use Chi for fighting, it's more for healing, and well being. If you are not sure what to think by all the different reviews, get your library to order it in for you. Then if you like it buy it.

"Who wants to be a Superhero" for Real

Review Date: 2006-09-15
"Who wants to be a Superhero" was broadcast recently on the Sci-Fi channel and got me thinking about Superheroes and their powers. Feedback, the winning character, had the ability to absorb the powers and abilities of the video games he plays which reminded me of the part in Lily Carnie's book where she talks about using video games to enhance your Chi Gung skills. In re-reading her book, I was struck by the way the practice of Chi Gung folds into the training and abilities that have long been associated with the Superhero.

The entire second part of her book is devoted to the various ways you can train in Chi Gung. When she talked about increasing healing speed, taking snow baths, tracking animals and training in high altitude locations it reminded me of the Marvel Superhero Wolverine and the way he often retreats into the Canadian wilderness. Captain America embodies her discussion on Self Confidence and Positive Thinking. When she talked about projecting and absorbing Chi, I thought of various X-Men like Cyclops projecting Chi from his eyes or Gambit charging items with Chi to make them explosive or Rogue who can absorb the Chi from another person gaining their memories and skills.

Ms Carnie's entire section on sensory training and the ways you can enhance your sense of touch, smell, hearing and taste is exactly how Daredevil operates on a daily basis. The way she talks about using intuition to guide and direct ones actions and understanding of a situation is exactly like Spiderman's Spider-Sense.

Despite their enhanced abilities, many Superheroes like Daredevil, Captain America, or the X-men, are dedicated to training to master their abilities and utilize them to the fullest. Each day, regardless of the battles won, they return to their gym, headquarters or Danger Room to continue their training. Captain America was shown teaching Chi Gung to Spiderman in the first issue of the comic "Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman" to help him focus his Chi and accomplish things he never thought he could do before. This parallels Lily Carnie's own approach to Chi Gung training as something that can always be refined, enhanced and taken to the next level.

Her book is a valuable training manual for cultivating your Chi Gung skills. With imagination, dedication, and focus, even you can become a real Superhero.

A book of great depth.

I have been amazed at the discordance of the reviews posted here. I've noticed that those who like Lily of the Valley Carnie's book write reviews in which they talk about the applications of the book's ideas, exercises or activities in their lives and the positive effect it's had. They enjoy its genuine and flexible approach to Chi Gung.

Those who write disapproving reviews also follow a basic pattern. They note that Ms Carnie's presentation of Chi Gung isn't like the way they've experienced Chi Gung from books by other authors and they don't seem to understand the depth of her presentation of the material.

I really enjoy Lily of the Valley's book because in it she captures the most important lesson of any Martial Art or Chi Gung practice, namely that the point of training is to move beyond the practice and be able apply it to all parts of your life. The way Ms Carnie invites and guides you to explore Chi Gung in a hundred different applications is the goal of anyone who seeks to be a Master. A simple approach that can lead to great understanding.

So I find it interesting that the open, flexible and eclectic approach that bothers some reviewers is actually its greatest strength and I highly encourage you to read her book and experience it for yourself.

I find this book to be superb. I am particularly attacted to its flexibility, which fits in with the fact that the form of Chi Gung which Ms. Carnie practices is "The Flowing".
Lily Carnie is a skilled teacher unlike many who know *how* to do something but don't know how to pass on that ability. The Olympic coach Laurence E.Morehouse found that an extremely ineffective way to teach someone how to use their body is to tell them what to do with the various parts of their body. What works is to give them an IMAGE to hold in their mind. Ms. Carnie in her section on breathing, "... the most important skill you will learn in practicing this ancient art.", shows her awareness of this principle: "Imagine you are inhaling a delicate silk thread and if you breathe too harshly, quickly, or spasmodically, it will break."
What motivated me to write this review was the "Astonishing bad" review of Kenneth Robinson. I found his review "helpful" in recommending anything on Chi Gung by Lam Kam Chuen or B. K. Frantzis. I have to assume that, in sharp contrast to the flexibility of Lily Carnie, their works would exhibit the rigidity so dramatically displayed by Mr. Robinson.
But to return to "Life as it Should be" as we say in Maine, L.V.Carnie's "Chi Gung" will broaden the vistas of your life.

What prevented me from giving it five stars was the lack of information on attunement levels required to perform some of the symbols. Intent is powerful and all, but an essential tenet of Reiki is that only certain symbols can be activated only after a specific attunement to the healer has been performed. Intent plays a role in it, but does not take place of the attunement. This important because and Reiki Level I, does not have the attunements required to activate Level II or III symbols, a Level II can not work with symbols of Level III....

As a Level II practitioner this would have been helpful.

Keep them coming, please...

Chris Penczak is THE man. About two years ago, I found myself seeking spiritual truth. The possibility of magick always intrigued me, so I signed up for a Transcendental Reiki I weekend class. That was an amazing experience.

After that, I found myself attracted to DM Kraig's "Modern Magick". The one thing that bothered me was the lack of Eastern inclusion in Western ceremonial magick. I felt pulled toward magick overall, but did not want to see my Reiki attunement and knowledge go to waste.

One day, at a small local bookstore, I saw the purple cover and title "Magick of Reiki". It was love at first sight. I've scrubbed some of the symbols against some of the Hebrew letters and symbols of Kaballah and found some striking resemblances, particularly with "The Ark", one of the symbols found in the Appendices of MoR.

This book, combined with another book about generic magickal training such as "Practical Magic for Beginners" by Brandy Williams, or "Initiation into Hermetics" by Franz Bardon, will have you turning your healing Reiki into a full-blown spiritual ascension system.

Thanks Chris,
Sean

This is a good book for those interested in the similarities between reiki and wicca. I had a good knowledge of Reiki but little knowledge of wicca before reading this book. I gave general knowledge about both subjects although leans more towards new reiki learners. I did not like the fact that it gave all the reiki symbols together. I follow my master's beliefs and believe that the 2nd and master symbols should only be learned after attunements, so I note to tell someone to skip those pages if desired would have been nice. Otherwise, if you are not bothered by that, a good book. Also gives some New Reiki symbols, but I would have desired a little more info about them. Also, be sure to check the distant reiki symbol. It does not correlate with the one my reiki master gave me, but of course there are discrepancies out there about this symbol, so follow whatever your heart chooses-author says this alot which i do like, some authors push their beliefs on the reader and chris doesnt. overall, a good buy!

As a pagan I was drawn to this book because of the title. I have been initiated into the traditional Usui system of Reiki. I've read other books on Reiki and found this to be very refreshing and open-minded. It resonated for me because the author is able to explore many views in a sensitive manner. Quite a different approach from what I had been exposed to in my training and experience with other practitioners and teachers.
I like that he includes many other symbols to work with. My favorite "alternative " symbol is the OM.
Based on reading this book, I will purchase one of his others. His writing style makes the topic very accessible and clear.

I am greatly honored to express my intense love for this literature. I have been blessed enough to know the authors Kaleo and Elise and be presented with this spirit expanding piece of literature. Being a hypnotherapist and learning more about the Eastern Way of philosophy has helped my grow unto myself and how I see myself helping others.
Reading this literature and absorbing its knowledge has for me enhanced my perception of the tri-fold "singularity" that makes up who we all are. I am fascinated by the detailed instructions and positive suggestions about how and when to come in contact with our "Inner Artist".
I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to develop their perception about energy flows and cycles of life/death by holistically improving in body-mind-spirit.

REIKI TUMMO by IRMANSYAH EFFENDI is the best book about reiki. I did read many other books about reiki, some are good, other not so good; other books "told" me how useless are only looking to the table of contents and some Excepts and Surprise Me. I did not waste my time reading them.
If you are interested in reiki or you want to significantly improve your reiki knowledge and efficiency, as far as I know there is no better choice than REIKI TUMMO.
I had the chance of being in touch with some Reiki Tummo practitioners from USA - Barbara, Steven, Martha, etc - what wonderful people! A kind of great family.

Reiki Tummo showed me the path trough my inner heart and how to find the connection to the divine source. We are spiritual beings using a physical body to learn. This book explains what happens when you get Tummo Reiki attunements, but you must take the classes and get the "attunements" to understand it and feel it through your heart. It has changed my life, learning how to do it from your heart makes a big difference when I channel Reiki now.

I am a beginning student of Reiki Tummo. In the short time I have been practicing, I have experienced a profound healing on myself--a release of emotional blockages that have guarded my heart for many years. For the first time, I can feel my heart, and feel the love of Divine Source flowing through it to myself and to others. I have felt the hearts of those who are ahead of me on this path, and have thus caught a glimpse of what lies ahead. Reiki tummo provides us with a map for accessing our inner, Sacred Heart. There is no higher, nor more important activity that we can be involved in for ourselves, our families and friends, humanity, and the planet.
This book, along with the required attunements are highly recommended for those who want to increase their personal energy, healing ability, or just want to go home.

Communicative approach to Genuine Kung Fu
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-09
I have read a lot about Sifu Wong, and I have read a lot of what he has written. There are many things that are said about him frequently that are accurate: he is open and consistent about his teaching, realistic in his criticism, honest to the point where it seems audacious, and he takes very good care of his students. He is also obliged to be a combatant in the often banal blogging forum on "what real Kung Fu is". I do not envy him. But this brings me to what is perhaps his most significant contribution to Kung Fu for Westerners especially, that is to say his being a link between eastern and western understandings of Kung Fu and Chi Kung. There are already few real masters but even fewer who have his communicative ability or academic background. He is Asian with a western compatible identity! In this book and others he is able to clearly describe to Westerners his philosophy and approach to genuine Kung Fu and adapt it in such a way that it can be realistically practiced by today's western practitioners without comprimising the most important aspects of the discipline. So we can take the benefits from our Chi Kung training, stop feeling guilty about not being Shaolin monks, and avoid wasting time with New Age or dance approaches to Chi Kung and its related arts (if that's what we want to avoid...). I am what Sifu Wong would call a "competent Tai Chi instructor". I am no master, but I have a Chinese master and I teach as one of his disciples. It is wonderful to come across someone on the open market who is so similar to my own Sifu. It is also surprising. Best of wishes to you all.

The idea of learning Chi Kung came to me as a result of many synchronistic events. Not being able to find a teacher, I chose "The Art of Chi Kung" because of the word "art". Not usually a patient person, I find myself moving slowly and purposefully through this book. I am on Chapter Seven and quite content to practice the three novice movements that are clearly explained up to this point. I appreciate the background information, diagrams, and encouragement Wong Kiew Kit provides. I look forward to reading, learning and growing in the art of chi kung as outlined in this valuable book.

Though I would not have expected it with my rigorous and traditional Reiki background, I was inexplicably drawn to this book one day out of the blue. Currently, I am in a period of self-study and examination before I move on to the mastery level/ shinpiden teachings in Usui Reiki Ryoho. This book has valuable tools for the practical side of a Reiki practice, including an inventory of qualities demonstrated by healing facilitators and teachers, tools and tips for teaching classes in Sekhem-Seichim-Reiki, sample consent and client info forms, templates for passing on attunements and wonderful meditations, and lots of personal stories dotting the writing.

Although I may never study this or any related branch of Reiki/energy work, this book is still greatly enriching my experience as I alk the path. The tools are great for anyone, no matter the path. I have been thankful to be exposed to a lot of newer western Reiki techniques in my training, all the while maintaining a deep connection to traditional practices and historical applications of Reiki. This book builds upon the modernized New Age-y methods with many more tools to add to this category. Any teacher or practitioner, whether your methodology may be Usui Reiki Ryoho, SSR, aromatherapy, crystal therapy, or anything else, may enjoy this book for what it contributes.

Diane Shewmaker has a lot of heart in this book. I am sure that you will feel the blessings of healing as you work through it.

One day, I looked up and saw this book sitting on my home bookshelf. Don't ask me how it got there, but the timing was perfect: I discovered that just a few days hence, the author would be teaching at a local bookstore, and I already had the text in hand. It was just one more step on an amazing journey I couldn't have even begun to have predicted.

Shewmaker has infused this book with such love and compassion that it is not uncommon to feel the healing energy moving through your body just as you sit and read. She walks healers through every step of SSR (Sekhem-Seichim-Reiki), from the origins of its three facets, through all of the symbols and the initiation process, and even into the more mundane matters of healing as a business.

This book is a valuable tool on so many levels, whether you're completely new to energy healing or a seasoned master. I, too, am looking forward to the release of the teacher's manual!

Can't wait for the teacher's edition!

For anyone interested in energy work, I would consider this required reading. Even if you have never been exposed to Reiki before and are interested in learning more about it from one of the best teachers out there (she attuned the woman who attuned me), this is a great book for novices as well as seasoned professionals.

This is a good book for begginers. It shows how to balance your chakras, how they interact within them, how the non balanced chakra might manifest a specific condition..

This kit is wonderful and it forces you to do the work without skipping ahead, which is one of my tendencies. I have not yet finished all of the exercises, but the first exercise is incredible in helping you to get centered.

CHAKRAS - BEST overview

Chakra Balancing Kit is a follow up to Anodea Judith's "Wheels of Life" (which is a huge book but the definitive guide to chakras). This serves as an excellent introduction to learning about chakras, or serves as a refining of one's advanced understanding of chakras. Has chakra cards, photo illustrated book of balancing exercises, 2 CDs - one CD explains what chakras are, the colors and meaning attached to each chakra; the second disc explains balancing chakras. Saved it to my Ipod and computer for working out, meditating, taking a break, driving in car, etc. ONLY PROBLEM: Her pronunciation drives me crazy - "CHAKras" - not the soft "shakras" as most people say, and the Indians say (where this sciece began its evolution). Her voice is nice, her pronunciation disconcerting. Overall the kit is excellent and I am enjoying it, and giving it as gifts to persons who don't know what a chakra is.

Empowering, great reference for anyone interested in health

Bottom Line: Buy It
This is an empowering resource for anyone new to kinesiology or touch for health, and also to those interested in delving more into the fields.
Though there are classes to become certified in Touch for Health, you do not need a medical degree or any kind of certification to make use of this book in your own health.
It explains the basics, and breaks each organ meridian down to what muscle groups are impacted, how to test for that particular muscle, what nutrition supports or hinders that muscle, clearing the neurolymphatics, as well as how to trace, strengthen or sedate that meridian, numerous other things, and it's filled with great diagrams for reference.
I would also highly recommend Energy Medicine by Donna Eden as a great companion book.
My only complaint, is the size of the book (it's rectangle in shape) and its binding (spiral bound) is not very compatible for constant referencing.

Touch for Health can help anyone, from physical to emotional. A must-have resource for anyone who wants an alternative to, or compliment Western medicine. This book is for the novice to the experienced, and a great reminder of how our emotions regulate our physical health.

This edition has been phenomenally improved! I owned the original published more than thirty years ago. The photos and illustrations clearly demonstrate various tests, point locations, acupressure principles, etc. The binding and protective cover have been completely redesigned. This manual contains a wealth of proactive health balancing and maintainence information, well organized for those who are being first introduced to the system. The acupressure sections of the book contain a wealth of traditional and innovative new information presented clearly and concisely. Highly recommended.

This is a very practical and simple sounding book, but it offers a profound modality to heal one of the most common ailments of our stressed out lifestyles.. that of our digestive system shutting itself down and literally going into knots. This book teaches very simple techniques to un-knot our very complex visceral systems.

The diagrams are very graphic and useful in understanding the techniques. I highly recommend this book to anyone interetsed in natural healing.

After reading Unwinding the Belly, I use the exercises each time I wake up at 3 or 4 am. I have a habit of waking up, thinking about problems, and trying to solve them. I lay there uncomfortable and in my head for 1 or 2 hours. Usually I do not get back to sleep. Now I do the breathing and belly exercises from this book and fall back to sleep quickly and peacefully. I'm able to be relaxed and focused on my body. I no longer feel tired or depressed during the day. I wake up refreshed and happy to be alive.

I Recommend This Book Highly

A friend with lots of experience studying these techniques at the Chi Nei Tsang Institute of Berkeley, gave me some sessions. I was surprised to find a book which shows me how to do this for myself. The book explains everything so clearly and presents practical information. "Unwinding the Belly" is a wonderful title for the book. It is easy for me to store some emotional stress of living in today's world in my body, especially my belly. And it is a good way to work with the body and emotions. I can only speak for myself but this book helps me a lot and continues to do so. It deserves every one of the five stars I gave it for excellent quality and simplicity of use. I intend to make these exercises described in the book part of my daily routine.
