The most important gear on board on our Caribean trip!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-02-13
The focus of the book is not a normal cruising guide altho it has a lot of info on ports, etc. Its value was as a primer on how to cruise with topics like diesel maintenance, language, port clearances, and (mostly) sailing into the trades. We did not meet any cruiser that did not use the book.

Feeling the psychogical , social environment
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-10
It was shear luck I began to read Ama Ata Aidoo's book. I borrowed it from an important library in Budapest. This is her only book, I picked it up just for reading something short and in English. I must say , I was most lucky. If I proceed from 'facts' to 'abstraction', there is the important question where we start from. Because 'facts' are sometimes as biased as 'abstractions'. We can find hardly a better start-point for our thinking than this book. The writer has a distinctive feeling for human contacts, the state of mind of the speaker and the listener, and how somebody orients him/herself badly or well in this world.

Very colourful and humourous characters.

Alvin Bennet tells an interesting tale of survival, greed, hatred, love, and class consciousness in Colonial Jamaica. This novel captures the hopelessness of black Jamaicans in that period. Bennet weaves an interesting tale interlaced with brisk West Indian humour.

Review Date: 2006-07-09
The 2005 winner of the Agha Shahid Ali Prize in Poetry, The Gods We Worship Live Next Door is a stark free- verse collection. Written by a Manila native who survived the Bataan Death March and a WW II Japanese concentration camp in the Philippines, The Gods We Worship Live Next Door images horrific events in human history with the stark clarity that only art can provide. A dark, vivid insight into unjustifiable cruelties and wrongs. From a Filipino Death March Survivor Whose WW II Benefits Were Rescinded by the US Congress in 1946: 1. I left three years ago. / 2. If you want to know about my rural childhood, ask my survivors. / 3. If you want to know how I was recruited into the United States Army at twenty, ask President Roosevelt. / 4. If you want to know how I ended up in the Death March at twenty-one, ask General MacArthur. / 5. If you want to know how many of my friends perished in the Japanese concentration camps, ask General Homma. / 6. If you want to know how I contracted malaria, beri-beri, dysentery, skin disease, gastrointestinal disease in one month, ask the Japanese Camp Commander. / 7. If you want to know how my military benefits were rescinded at the end of the war, ask President Truman. / 8. If you want to know how I became a 100% disabled veteran, ask my V.A. doctors.

WHERE'S THE BEST GOLF COURSE FOR MY GAME??
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-18
Golf Digest has assembled a very useful reference guide which includes 4,200 listings of both public and resort courses in America, Canada, Caribbean and Mexico. For ease of search, the book is divided into 2 parts: the Eastern and Western states arranged alphabetically. The Index has alphabetical listings of both the city or state plus the name of the golf course itself, if that be the method of search. Found the Table of Contents list of the Five-Star Courses, Super Value Courses, Great Value Courses, and Frugal Favorites very helpful. The detailed description of each course, its policies, prices, and player comments is a great addition to the guide. "Know Thy Destination" prompts the Guide's Introduction, including the addresss, phone numbers and directions, which were a great help. A thoughtful addition to the guide is the chapter: TAKING YOUR GAME ON THE ROAD, "There's More to a Golf Vacation Than Just Packing Your Clubs and Booking Tee Times".

This reviewer suggests that golfers check with reservations to confirm prices of green fees and golf carts as they may have changed since the 2nd edition was last printed in 1996.

i am so happy that this book is available. the beautiful use of language, and storytelling took me on a delightful/lyrical journey. i wish this book had been around when my daughter was a little girl because this is a book we would have enjoyed over and over.

i have had the honor of hearing the author read the book at a signing-wow/it was a musical experience that i've been looking to have again. i think the publishers should make this book available on tape with the author reading the story!

Carribean in my kitchen....
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-13
Ahh, the pictures alone are mouth watering. I suggest you might want to have a snack before reviewing this yummy experience. Have you ever been to the Caribbean? This book helped prepare me for my vacation and at times a simple meal accompanied with a light Caribbean beat, takes me back, back to my enchanted place. My favorite recipe is Grilled Baby Lamb Chops by Chef Norma Shirley at the Warfside in Jamaica. And yes I will say with the detailed instructions, after the second try, I nailed this morsel. I have prepared a few dishes for guest who are natives of the East Coast (I am from California ;o), two friends are from New York, another from Florida) and even they taste flavors that remind them of restaurants you can't find in California. Some of the ingredients are hard to find, but they do assist with information to substitute as well as where to look if you insist on having the ingredients as authentic as possible. The only bad part is, you will have no leftovers, everyone will eat everything. Buy it, for the sake of calories!
