Semi-complete Summary of American Voodoo and Hoodoo

Mr. Haskins does a great job of summarizing in brief the basic history of Vodou and it's journey from West African tribal
society to the New World through the transportation of slaves. He also gives some contemporary accounts of voodoo and hoodoo
as practiced in the USA and how it compares (more likely contrasts) with it's West African roots. It is incomplete in that
he does not go into any great detail concerning the religious aspects of Vodou still practiced in the USA and concerns the
bulk of the book with modern Hoodoo practices and conjures. Yet it is an informative and enjoyable read overall and I recommend
it as long as the reader combines the information contained herein with more gleaned from other sources in order to better
round out their understanding of this complex and vibrant tradition.

Excellent resource to study for the FNP exam. I also recommend taking her live review course, it is complete and to the point.
She has had 100% pass in most of her classes ( n p r e v i e w. c o m). If you can't make it to her review I also recommend
for you to get the Fitzgerald review and her Audio CDs. Make sure you study for at least a couple of months before the test.

I was very disappointed to pay $40 for a book with so many errors, not just typing but medical information! For example, on
page 94 she states aortic and pulmonic valves are semilunar valves and AV valves have 3 leaflets! After reading the other
reviews here, I am to nervous about memorizing false information to continue studying from this book. The exam tips and study
hints are very useful but overall not worth the money.

I stopped using this book shortly after I bought it. There were too many errors and too many inconsistencies when compared
to other sources. I didn't want to study and memorize incorrect information. Also, I found a lot of the material too dense
and too specific to work well for review purposes - there are far better books out there.

I just passed my ANCC today and here are some books I wish I had in school. The following helped me to pass the ANCC because
they are most like the test. First, Margaret Fitzgerald's book Nurse Practitioner Certification Examination and Practice Preparation
is a great must have book for school and test prep. If you can, take her live seminar or get the CDs. Next Leik's book Family
Nurse Practitioner Certification Intensive Review:Fast Facts and Practice Questions, great book, good to synthesize all of
the Fitzgerald info. The Hollier/Wirfs book: Certification Prep Exams Practice Test s and Questions with Rationales 4th ed
is a great prep for questions, don't bother buying the review book by Hollier, it is too basic. Next, make SURE you buy the
Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Review by Zerwekh and Claborn. This is the only review book I could find that has
a CD rom . The CD is almost like the actual test and some of the questions are very similar. If you start off by buying these
four books you will be in good shape. Good luck on the exam!

Too many errors and typos in this book. By page 17, I have already found several errors and the book contradicts itself with
the rationale. Very confusing, poorly organized and incorrect information. Example given: chapter 2 emergent conditions;
the first question offers an option of an IM injection, while the rationale and correct answer is SQ. The question on a 3-month
old fever gives an incorrect answer, with the rationale for another option. This book was clearly not proof-read or edited......

This book looks daunting at first encounter. Each page is crammed with valuable information which sometimes overwhelms the
reader. But this is exactly why this book is a gem for me. Other readers find it difficult to follow because they missed the
fly leaf which lists all the nursing diagnosis with its corresponding page numbers. In my experience, in order to get the
maximum use of this book, go to the fly leaf (the first page after the front cover), look up the nursing diagnosis and its
page number. When you get to the right page, voila, all the wonderful information is listed as follows:
Nursing diagnosis->definition->major defining characteristics-> minor defining characteristics-> related factors-> pathophysiologic factors-> treatment related factors-> situational factors->maturational factors->assessment criteria->outcome criteria->general interventions-> and the last is the rationale.
Inside blue boxes are author's notes and errors in diagnostic statements which are very important pieces of information for beginning nurses or students like me. There are also considerations for pediatric, maternal and geriatric patients.
I hope this review is helpful. One last thing, this book does not work for you if you feel hurried. Take your time when you read this book.

I am a bit surprised at some of the negative comments on this book, as I love it most thoroughly. But then again, it is not
the right choice for someone who wants to rush through a care plan and give it a loose going over. This book is thorough,
comprehensive, and it is dedicated to producing high quality results. These are the reasons that I rely heavily on this book
on the floor as the nurse who has to update and revise all the care plans, bringing them into compliance and improving them.
This book is for all nursing students and practicing nurses who believe that the care plan carries a significant amount of
weight in the nursing process. If you are serious about good results, upgrade from the "less is more" books that shield you
from the data to the Granddaddy of Nursing Diagnosis Books.

While I appreciate that this textbook is written by and for nurse practitioners, a close reading of this book will expose
an incredible lack of editing. This was the assigned text for my Pharmacology for Advanced Practice class, and my classmates,
instructors, and I found numerous mistakes and inconsistencies throughout the book - to the extent that the instructor will
no longer use this text for her class.
Not only are there numerous superficial editing mistakes, there are several contradictions in content on crucial pharmacological concepts. I do not trust this book as a source of information, and I do not recommend it for anyone. This text requires extensive editing and re-working to be useful.

I bought this book two months ago and it has been an excellent resource. I am currently taking an advanced course of pharmacology
(FNP-S) and after reviewing several other textbooks I decided that this was the best one. If you are working towards an advanced
degree in nursing this is a "must have textbook". I strongly recommend it.
The book covers the entire spectrum of prescribing from the eyes of a nurse in advanced practice not from the eyes of a pharmaceutical. If you need to know the chemistry and the composition of drugs you need to look for another book.

I'm currently taking pharmacology this semester and we are using this book. Most of the students in the class, including myself,
found so many inconsistencies inside this book. I told my professor that she should consider changing textbooks for next semester,
but I was told that the school has a "contract" and can't change textbooks. I ended up getting supplemental books to study
from. I don't recommend this book for graduate study. It is too wordy and has too many inconsistencies.

This text is awful. It is very hard to follow and is not nearly as in-depth as it should be. It is poorly organized. For example,
if you look up "ACE Inhibitor" in the Index, its listed on 39 pages, ranging from p75-1086. Obviously, these are not all in
the same chapter. Its mentioned in the chapters entitled: Culture and Ethnic Influences etc, Drugs affecting the cardiovascular
and renal systems, Drugs affecting the Hematopoietic system, Drugs affecting the endocrine system, drugs affecting the reproductive
system, a chapter about Angina, a chapter about Diabetes, a chapter about heart failure, and a chapter about hyperlipidemia.
As you can see, this is just one example of how spread out information is and how it is hard to get a concise view of a drug
or method of treatment. I would not recommend this book. I gave it one star because Amazon makes you give it at least one
star.

More theoretical than a "Wiley Trading" imprint- but just barely

I was looking for a book on foreign currency strategy well suited for readers with MBAs or degrees in economics - people not
afraid to delve into the theory, but not necessarily well-versed in this particular topic. The "Wiley Finance" imprint usually
does a good job of exactly this - a thorough serious treatment of a subject, but without differential equations. However,
this book was too basic. It breezed by the theory at 10,000 feet with few references to academic papers/studies that could
take you farther. Also, the book was poorly edited (shame -it is a 2nd edition) with repetition, rambling and grammatical
errors. Callum Henderson clearly knows his subject, but demands too little of his readers and was not helped by his editors.
That said, there are few alternatives on the subject that aren't trading books replete with technical analysis or thick academic
tomes that are aimed at shaping public policy rather than informing market participants. So read the book and get what you
can out of it.
Good intro to exchange rate determination and risk managment

This is a good introduction to exchange rate determination in theory and in practice. Useful for someone with a little bit
of background into economics or exchange rates who wants to delve a bit more. It is slightly frustrating in that the theories
are explained but little is provided in terms of whether the evidence shows it works or not. It also lacks adequate references.
One outstanding feature of this book, and indeed a lot of work by this author, is that it moves beyond just exchange rate forecasting into the realm of exchange rate risk management and other issues pertinent to those who deal in this space.

As a professional trader who deals with the ups and downs of the FX market from Monday to Friday for years, particularly with
the extreme volatility of USD from last October till now, I am obliged to comment that the book is of little practical/predictive
use. Unless you really wanna study academic theories about FX like different kinds of exchange rate regime or exchange rate
model (which seldom held themselves), or get reasons to hedge your exposure "completely" for your company's or your own investment
portfolio, please give this book a pass.

In 1971, President Richard Nixon ended the convertibility of the dollar into gold and thereby scotched the mechanism of international
agreements and regulations that had governed the world monetary system since the end of World War II. Over the ensuing decades,
the once-stable global monetary environment became an exciting, volatile new source of risk and opportunity. Manufacturers
saw their fortunes rise and fall as currency shifts favored them or, alternatively, their competitors overseas. Financial
institutions discovered new opportunities and dangers in fast-moving currency markets. We recommend this book for its detailed
and generally clear, albeit often tedious, introduction to the tools, techniques and strategies readers may use to manage
risk or speculate in the world's biggest financial arena - the unregulated international currency market.

Interpretive pedagogies, individually known as critical, feminist, phenomenological, and postmodern pedagogies, are a particular approach to schooling, learning, and teaching where the focus is placed on students and teachers working to together to learn in community oriented activities. This book uses research and nursing stories to portray a learning climate where these varieties of interpretive pedagogies weave a smooth transition to a new landscape of learning and teaching in nursing. Interpretive pedagogies promote both student and teacher learning. In nursing, which is quickly changing, this method of education provides for a constant flow of valuable knowledge.
I believe the role of the teacher will become more general, helping students find, interpret, and apply information, instead of the traditional subject matter expert. The educators in the health care professions can look to books like this for valid guidance.
I found myself pondering new thoughts and questions regarding my history of having once been a student nurse. I have to agree with the description of the traditional nursing curriculum of being teacher-centered which fostered isolation, fear and anxiety. Reading this is an explorative journey for the nurse and for nurse educators. It leaves the reader with hope that nursing education can rise to the challenge to integrate new pedagogies. I would recommend this book for the serious reader of educational philosophies.
