I thought Meier's book was a good introduction into urabn elementary teaching especially if you're a beginning teacher or simply interested in education. It's not a handbook by any means, but Meier covers valid issues that come up through his experience as a 1st grade co-teacher that were insightful and helpful to me as a beginning teacher.

I did not know what to expect when I ordered this book but since I was about to start a job in a tough urban high school, I thought it couldn't hurt. What I got was a book that focused on one man's elementary classroom and his specific day to day experiences. This is a heartfelt, and well written account of those experiences that would be good reading for those interested in becoming an urban elementary teacher or understanding the unique challenges of this job. I would not recommend it however for those teaching high school or middle school since that is a whole different ball game!

My professor suggested this book and deemed it the "Bible on Evidence". I bought it and it is. A great book that will clear up many of your questions. If you don't understand what your law professor is saying, this book will make it clearer.

The price is great and the material is through and perfect for a beginner or someone who knows high school Spanish but needs medical Spanish. I have never taken a Spanish course in my life but thanks to this book/cassette combo-along with time (2 years) and practice- I can now complete a physical without a translator. A patient saw me a year after I bough the material and was utterly amazed at how much I had learned. This combo is fun and easy! You can listen to the tapes in the car (you don't have to follow along with the book if you don't want to) and later you can breeze through a chapter before bed. It teaches grammar as well as actual dialog starting with a simple patient introduction advancing to a neurological exam. I learned how to form sentences. I wasn't just memorizing phrases. Even my kids enjoyed listening in the car. The only draw back for us family physicians is that it doesn't teach the command form for kids (informal). I do agree with a prior reviewer that it's easier to understand the woman, but his accent was not "thick" enough to impair learning. I recommended this to my colleagues all the time! Enjoy!

I am a Pharmacist with a lot of Spanish speaking clientele. I like the cassettes, but the gentleman speaking has such a thick accent, I have to rely on the woman speaking, to hear the enunciation. The CME is a joke. There are 10 chapter exams (3-12 questions each) and you have to send in $30 PER exam for 3 credits each. That will be $300 for 30 CME credit hours, and only for MD's. Book content VERY NICE: greeting, nouns, numbers, symptoms, physical exam, chief complaint, pap smear, well baby, lab tests, ER, pain, derm, opth, herbal, Rx, dental, family, diet, neuro exam, household items; Tomar/comer/cerrar/dormir/hacer/ir a/poner/venir/tener/estar/ decir/ser/ir/traer/salir/oir/pensar/perder/volver/haber. Also a lot of dialogues completely translated. Appendix finds all answers to chapter exams. (not same as CME questions). I recommend this medical intro. It helps me in my practice, it would certainly help an MD, nurse, PA, DDS and OD as well.

As a psychologist who specializes in working with people with chronic pain, I have waited years for a comprehensive book that could answer my basic questions about strategies for effective pain management. This is the book. I have used it both clinically and as a reference for my own writing and teaching. The book is very well-written, not too technical and maintains a high standard for the information included. Every attempt has been made to validate recommended approaches with solid research and suggestions with limited or mixed research results are clearly indicated. The authors have selected an outstanding mix of contributors, each recognized as experts and authorities in the field.

A Useful Addtion to Professional Literature
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-27
This is far from being an exciting book, but it is a useful nuts-and-bolts review of available assessment instruments for PTSD and related disorders. Those who have worked with sufferers from the disorder are likely to have strong opinions about various aspects of it--Briere does not give much space to controversies about the adequacy (or lack thereof) of the DSM-IV criteria for PTSD, but does discuss other proposed disorders of extreme stress and ways of assessing them. His conclusion (which should be no surprise to anyone) is that trauma assessment is in its infancy and there is no "gold standard" yet. Nevertheless, he does make useful recommendations, and psychologists working with trauma victims ought to have this book on their shelves.

Must Own

Anyone interested in the assessment of PTSD must own this title. The book provides practical information about the many aspects of PTSD. Briere provides clear discriptions of specific PTSD symptomatology such as flash backs, dissociation, depersonalization, and derealization. He also discusses theoretical conceptualizations of PTSD such as complex PTSD. This book walks the reader through multiple assessment instruments and discusses both the complexities and subtlties of PTSD and associated disorders. Easy to read, complete, and full of information. Useful for the beginner or the seasoned veteran. No psychological library is complete without this title. Like Exner's Rorschach and Caldwell's MMPI literature, this book will take it's rightful place in the psychological assessment elite.

Stories about doctors and their patients fascinate everybody, including doctors themselves, and many famous literary works demonstrate how they can be widely told without violating the confidentiality of the doctor-patient relationship. Susan Woldenberg Butler, a doctor's wife, has collected many moving stories from her husband's colleagues, disguised them elegantly within a fictional framework, and presented them in this delightful book. Many doctors (and their spouses) will find it enlightening as well as entertaining and many patients will get some insight into the satisfactions, tensions, frustrations, and heartbreaks of front-line doctoring in all corners of the world.

If she's honest, every doctor will admit this is true

'Jan Luydik haunts me. If he's honest, every doctor will admit to such a patient. Jan's one of the reasons I want to leave general practice." Susan Butler's "Secrets from the Black Bag" (SBB) is a collection of 33 quirky, fascinating stories about general physicians from the far-flung corners of the world. This is a great book for any health care professional, especially recommend for medical students and house staff who could use a dram of humility. Butler's doctors are honest, straight-talking chaps; not gods or goddesses, but humble people trying to do difficult jobs and often screwing up. One senses that Butler stands on the shoulders of writers like William Carlos Williams. SBB is an antidote to the preachy popular medical literature we read today; omniscient tales of self-styled experts. Compared to these, Butler is curiously refreshing. SBB is best taken in doses of two to three stories a day (like any good medicine.) One needs a bit of time to absorb the tart unsentimental messages. Ms. Butler's SBB has earned a place on my bookshelf next to Williams' "The Doctor Stories" and John Berger's "A Fortunate Man." Highly recommended to anyone interested to what lies at the heart of medicine.

I love all of Ann Moura's books (and I believe I do have them all). This book is a great place to start if you are considering a green or nature-based path! Her insight is matched only by her experience and wisdom (which are two different things)! Her guidance is clear and easy to understand. Her love of the Craft is evident in her attention to detail in this book. I highly recommend all of Ann Moura's books! I have purchased dozens of her books over the years for study and sharing.

A friend recently recommended this book and all I can say is why in the heck wasn't this recommended from the beginning? Thank god for Ann! I am less than 50 pages into the book but so much of what I've heard and read over the past year or so makes sense now. I've heard of Green Witchcraft but no one could ever quite explain exactly what that was. I am looking forward to reading book 2 and 3 in the series. Once I'm done here, I'm going to kiss the friend that recommended this reading!

The Tides( or seasons) are called Sabbats in this book? and this is a Witchcraft book not Wiccan? Sabbat is a Wiccan word. Why is this lost on people?? This is a Wiccan book. Nothing wrong with that!!.I like Wicca But please dont call it something else when you use words like Mabon and Sabbat yes I understand what they are ,what they mean and on and on.People feel ripped off when they buy the book(I did).I know this will be lost on most people and will also make them upset.
This is a great book for those of you that like to say you are not Wiccan but a Witch, even if your practice is just about all Wiccan.
Wicca is a influence for most of us that today practice anything that is called Modern Witchcraft.
Still I have found that most books(and people) that have Witch in the title are no different than the Wiccan Witchcraft books, while claiming not to to be.
This is not a bad book, but you can find the same stuff in other books that are better.
Also you can not just throw the word Witch to any culture you want.
I know it is popular.
That is much like calling the Runes (or Wicca for that matter) Celtic.People do it, but it will not make it true.
You would do better to read some books on Herbs and or Natural Magic that do not have the word Witch or Wicca in the title after you have read this

By Far the Best Book I've Read in Regard to Witchcraft....

This book is an absolute "Must Read"! Myself being a Witch, not a Wiccan (yes, there is a difference), I have read countless books on the Craft over the past 10 years. Although many of these books were quite interesting and offered great insight, needless to say something was missing. When I came across Green Witchcraft, I literally jumped for joy! I had finally found "The Book" or shall I say, "Books". Green Witchcraft, Green Witchcraft- part II, and the Manual, along with Grimoire for the Green Witch are indispensable! Page 75 & 76 truly hits the nail on the head...But, I won't give it away! Set aside a weekend for yourself. Curl up in your favorite chair and read this book! Brightest Blessings.... )O(

THE WICCAN PATH by Rae Beth consists of a series of letters Rae Beth wrote to two friends who wanted to know more about Wicca. Her correspondence is not very different from exchanges I have had with various friends over the years -- a Christian Scientist friend who explained her religion to me via phone calls and letters, a Quaker friend who explained her religion to me over various meetings for coffee, and a Morman male friend I saw for over a year when I was younger (and did not marry) who explained his religion to me.

I read voraciously about religion--histories, documents, letters, books, and other material. Although I was raised Christian in a Protestant-Catholic household, my mother and maternal grandmother attended seances every Friday night, and my maternal grandfather was descended from Dutch Jews. Knowledge of my family's mixed religious affiliations caused me a great deal of concern when I was a child because I was sent to Catholic schools where I was taught only RCs could enter heaven. I have tried to understand other religions ever since.

Like other reviewers of Rae Beth's book, I have read Scott Cunningham, Raven Grimassi, Silver Ravenwolf, and many others and I enjoy what they have written. Rae Beth is the first Wicca who "spoke" to me on a personal level however. These days, I find myself growing closer and closer to this ancient system of beliefs. Wicca is a lovely practice that operates from the perspective of attraction, not promotion.

I can continue to celebrate the holidays I grew to love as a child -- Father Christmas or Santa Claus; the Green Man (who may be Robin Hood or the Holly King); The Lady (Mary for me and Kuan Yin for others); Jesus (the Lord and the great Magus -- a Hindu friend tells me she believes Jesus one of the incarnations of Shiva); the Great Spirit; and all my saints who are not lost including Saint Anthony who has helped me recover more than one lost thing and who probably had previous incarnation as some deity or other. I believe in a higher power, and I don't think anyone has the final answer (well Shirley McLean may).

This is a wonderful soothing book written by a gentle soul who is fully in touch with her own nature and the natural world around us. The best part of Rae Beth's discussion for me is in part two where she explains how to go into a trance. As she puts it, you can do it many ways, even with rosary beads.

I had so many epiphanies while reading this book, it was just amazing, especially the passages about The Holy Grail, and Faerie blood still running through the veins of some.
The way the book is written made me feel like the letters were addressed to me. It seemed very personal.
I go back to the book often for reference, as it contains much good information which I have hilighted, and also suggestions for rituals.

This book doesn't go through the typical Wicca 101 type books, it doesn't offer spells nor does it tell you everything about Wicca. It offers the knowledge of one woman as she relays her beliefs via written letters to two people interested in Wicca. It's a very good book.

Review Date: 2001-12-26
This book is set up in an interesting way: the 'chapters' consist of letters from the author to two (and then one) aspiring witches. While they all had good information in them, it wasn't what I was expecting.

A lot of what Ms. Beth gives us is her own personal Sabbatt celebrations. While it was interesting to see what kind of symbolism she uses, and it was helpful in forming my own Sabbatt rituals, this book sat on my bookshelf gathering dust for a long while until I felt that I had enough basic knowledge to actually cast a formal circle and do a Sabbatt ritual.

I'd say this book is for intermediate beginners, not those who are just beginning on the path. Although, it does take you through the wheel of the year quite nicely and it really could help to open someone's eyes as to what is going on in the natural world during the year. This is not the first book to start with.

I spent weeks studying from this book and taking all the practice tests. However, when I took the exam today I was surprised that the content of the exam was not adequately covered in this review manual! I feel like much of the time that I put in was wasted since I was focusing on the wrong material.

Another oddity is that the book is primarily organized alphabetically. Each individual chapter is clear and well-organized. However, organizing the chapters alphabetically instead of by body system is somewhat illogical....while it does alleviates boredom to skip from "tendinitis" to "testicular masses" to "thyroid disease," it would make more sense in relating different diseases to one another to group them by body system.

Utilizing the CD ROM to take the practice tests was very helpful, but I was disappointed that so many of the practice tests contain the same questions. So while it initially appears that there are many practice tests to utilize, it is really the same questions being repeated in different tests. Had I not been getting so close the deadline of my scheduled test date I would have purchased additional review questions from another author.

I did not examine any other FNP Certification review guides so I do not have any basis of comparison, but overall I feel disappointed that the content of this book did not make me feel adequately prepared for my exam today.
