Larry Dossey, M.D.'s THE EXTRA-ORDINARY HEALING POWER OF ORDINARY THINGS: FOURTEEN NATURAL STEPS OF HEALTH AND HAPPINESS comes from a physician long hailed as one of the discoverers of the idea of 'mind-body medicine'. Here Dr. Dossey discusses sources of natural healing and speedy recovery, exploring the medical research that acknowledges and supports natural remedies. From the return of leeches as useful medical tools to religion as a risk-reduction tool, THE EXTRA-ORDINARY HEALING POWERS OF ORDINARY THINGS surveys both physical and psychological rituals and healing methods.

In the spirit of Aristotle and Thoreau Larry Dossey provides compelling and stimulating answers to the eternal question - "what is truly important in life?" At a time when we seem increasingly confused by complexity, speed and continuous change this book reminds us that the important things in our lives are timeless and simple.

As befits the title Dr Dossey writes with simple elegance. The essays are lucid, well-reasoned, practical and frequently moving. Indeed I experienced the rare feeling that I was receiving genuine wisdom, and was being shown the path to a joyful and meaningful life through paying attention to the small things. So I recommend that the reader learns the principles in this book and takes "route one" to health and happiness

Thank God for Larry Dossey!!

As I sat at my grandmothers' feet, many years ago, she told me of the importance of the subtle world around me. She ministered to people struggling in various ways in the back-woods of West Virginia in the early nineteen hundreds. She learned medicine from her grandmother. Her life was rich with stories of healing and her love of nature.

Larry Dosseys' voice in the world is long overdue!

Physician, writer and editor Larry Dossey has been an important voice in medicine for more than two decades.

In his previous books and papers he has articulated an emerging vision of medicine which goes far beyond a simple mechanical view of the body, and emphasises a model that also addresses the emotional, spiritual and timeless aspects of our lives.

In this book he incorporates and expands upon some of the insights of the burgeoning field of positive psychology. One of the most attractive things about this new work is that he also emphasises the importance of apparently "negative" experiences. I have pointed out in my own work that we need to understand the importance of duality, balance and personal integration: To recommend positive thinking can be disastrous for some people, for whom pessimism and negative cognitions are their natural defense styles. Similarly, there are some people who get sick once stress is over. And the constant drive to boost self-esteem has created many people with narcissistic and sociopathic personality traits. In the same vein, Dossey also points out the importance of bugs, tears, dirt and an occasional a bit of unhappiness for our overall well-being.

This is a book that should be widely read and the principles applied in all our lives.

Highly recommended!

Now in a newly revised and significantly expanded edition illustrated throughout by Matthew Kondratief (writer, pastor, counselor, and owner of Sprague River Herb Gardens in South Central Oregon), "God's Healing Herbs" by Dennis Ellingson presents the history and showcases the value and use of some 130 popular herbs. Ellingson aptly provides the reader with an informative tour of a biblical herb garden, offers invaluable tips and even recipes for growing and preparing herbs, as well as offering resource listings of reliable herb suppliers. Organized alphabetically, readers will discover medicinal and medicinal charts to guide them with respect to the cited herbs. Of special note is the section devoted to 'Jesus and the Herbs'. A welcome addition for personal and community library gardening reference collections and supplemental reading lists, "God's Healing Herbs" is enthusiastically recommended for its herbal facts, lore, recipes, and advice.

Fascinating Biblical information

Review Date: 2006-06-26
A friend gave me this book, and, I must admit, I wasn't too interested in reading it when I first saw it. But once I sat down and read through it, I couldn't put it down! The author goes through each herb alphabetically (including things like onions and asparagus and avocado and carrot) with fasinating information about each one--culinary, medicinal, and Biblical facts. I found the Biblical facts most interesting. For instance, ginger was used to treat leprosy. He also gives cautions regarding the individual herbs, and preparation and growing tips.
After the alphabetical pages, there is a Biblical account of herbs in the Bible (mainly New Testament). This is probably my favorite part of the book.
Then the author has a great resource for other herbal companies in the USA, and gives facts about each company, ways to contact them, and recipes using the herbs in the book (that the people from each company contributed).
At the end is a list of 12 essential herbs for men, 12 essential herbs for children, and 12 essential herbs for women, and for seniors. This is a good starting point for beginners who are overwhelmed!
He also gives tables of the herbs: culinary tables, medicinal tables which are a great easy-reference source. For instance, if you have a headache, you can look under "headache" and see what herbs are helpful for that.
I especially liked the drawings of the individual herbs--they are very well-drawn and detailed (I've always wanted to know what the rest of an asparagus plant looks like!).
I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because I don't like the design of and the artwork on the cover.

Fascinating Guide to Healthy Living with Herbs

Dennis Ellingson owns and operates Sprague River Herb Farm in southern Oregon and Illustrator Matthew Kondratieff is a biologist and wildlife artist. Together they have created an illustrated book of herbal remedies.

After reading this book you may find yourself using Anise in tea, drinking catnip tea when you want to feel calm and using more chives because they are high in Vitamin C. If you love to cook, the information on cinnamon, nutmeg and cocoa will be invaluable.

Through the years I've spend a lot of time looking up information on herbal remedies and this book is one of my favorites because it gives you all the information on one page. Some herb books separate the information and I found the way this book was organized to be very entertaining and helpful.

How can you improve your health and quality of life with herbs?
Where can you find herbal remedies?

The first section includes detailed descriptions of herbs from A to Z. Each page has information along with herbal icons that allow for quick access to the information you are looking for including: description, growing tips, medicinal information, internal or external use, culinary uses, how to prepare, biblical references and cautionary concerns.

The biblical references shed light on the types of aloe mentioned in the Bible:

"The aloes mentioned in the Bible are perfumes that likely came from a tree in India known as "eaglewood." The aloe mentioned in John 19:39 is from the lily family, the same one we use for topical medicinal purposes." ~ pg. 13

Some of the herbs listed include Alfalfa, Aloe Vera, Bergamot, Blessed Thistle, Calendula, Cayenne, Cinnamon, Cranberry, Dandelion, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Garlic, Ginger, Ginseng, Hyssop, Lavender, Myrrh, Olive, Pomegranate, Savory, Tea Tree, Uva Ursi, Valerian and many more.

The page about cloves explains how it is used in incense, soaps and scented candles. I also like making pomanders by decorating oranges with cloves. I just made one for my kitchen and there are lots of recipes online. Some people make these during the holiday season, but for some reason I was in the mood to make one after the holiday season.

I will say that I also agree with the author about Wormwood. I recommend avoiding this herb if at all possible or only taking it after you have talked to your doctor and if you don't intend to take it for an extended period of time. This can cause serious problems and the benefits may not be worth the risks to your health. Wormwood is also found in absinthe (highly toxic because it contains a neurotoxin called thujone - also found in sage and cedar oil), which is known to be dangerous to health and can cause irreversible damage to the nervous system, convulsions, blindness, hallucinations, and mental deterioration. Artists, writers and poets have used this herb to enhance creativity, except the expansion of creativity doesn't seem to be worth losing your life or experiencing the side effects like nausea, tremors, insomnia and vertigo.

As the author notes: "Wormwood is mentioned numerous times in the Bible and always in reference to calamity and bitter experience." The author also explains why you should not use too much sage, normally used during the holiday season or when cooking a chicken dinner. While this book states that Siberian ginseng is a "recognized cure for insomnia" you don't want to take the herb at night because then it could cause insomnia.

"On trips to the Oregon coast, nothing is more pleasant than long walks on the beach together. My wife and I explore the beach, the rocks, find interesting pieces of driftwood to lug home. But we also notice long, cylindrical ocean plants, uprooted by the tides...Ocean herbs are considered detoxifiers for the body, helping rid the body of excess fluids and fatty wastes." ~ pg. 85

If you want to try the seaweed bath, look up LUSH Big Blue - it has seaweed and is a very interesting experience. This book recommends seaweed as a brain food and I've been taking "Sea Vegg" on a regular basis. There is also a recipe for an oat and honey facial scrub.

I especially enjoyed reading the sections on herbs used in the kitchen, especially rosemary, savory and tarragon. The last sections of the book include an interesting journey through the teachings of Christ in regards to plants mentioned in the Bible. A Table of Medicinal Herbs for External and Internal use is also included.

There are also recipes:

Poached Salmon in Herbs
Green Salad with Herb Vinaigrette
Oregano Garlic Bread
Herb Grilled Lamb
Lavender Cookies
Boursin-Style Cheese Spread
Gingerbread Cookies
Chai Tea

To find out how to use herbs you are growing in your garden, there is also a Table of Culinary Herbs. Fennel can be added to salmon or breads and savory can be added to soups. I like using it when making a Tuna Fish sandwich, along with dill.

To make this book even more helpful, the author has lists of herbs for women, men, children and seniors. A glossary is useful for words like tincture and compress and the index is useful for finding specific herbs, remedies or health issues you are researching.

I didn't know a book on herbs could be this much fun. Dennis Ellingson is also a pastor and counselor so he includes spiritual elements along with recipes, advice and solutions to common health problems. This book is a result of his own research and he states that this is not a book of "medical advice" although this book presents a variety of remedies that will be very helpful to anyone looking into the value and use of herbs. I feel much safer trying herbs after reading this book and since herbs can be powerful and do have side effects, this book presents herbs in a realistic way so you can make wise decisions about your health.

This small compact herbal is the best herbal reference I have encountered in over 20 years in the healing profession. Not only are the descriptors and uses clearly indicated for those seeking application but the expanded base of what makes these herbs and combinations work well speaks to physiologogists in the language of mineral and chemical content. I have many herbals..some quite expensive but none as good as this small compact handsize volume.. I have had to replace it several times due to use.

This book was a pleasure to read, the author's tone is that of a good friend giving sensible advice. More importantly, I find myself referring to the book every couple of weeks. The recipes for herbal teas are wonderful; they so intrigued me that I started gathering wild herbs on hiking trips and added some key herbs to my garden--I'll never buy herbal teas from the grocery store again.

The book is visually pleasing and easy-to-use as a reference.

This easy to read book has got an amazing amount of very practical information. It's written in such a manner that you can easily find an ailment with it's corresponding therapeutic program (specific foods, supplements, herbs etc.) Dr. Airola also gives in my opinion the best lacto-vegetarian diet around. I've never been ill and feel great every single day since implementing this diet and his other health-boosting recommendations in my life. Bluntly said, this book covers everything you need to know to get healthy or get healing - the natural way.

This book has the ring of truth to it, unlike many books on nutrition I've read. Dr. Airola lists most common diseases (and even includes a chapter on smoking), and gives step-by-step instructions on how to deal with those maladies, including dietary suggestions, herbal and other supplemental recommendations, as well as other techniques such as juice fasting. (I have followed Dr. Airola's protocol for fasting several times and have found it a cleansing and healing experience.) Several appendices are very helpful, including dissertations on how to fast properly and what constitutes a healthy diet. The writing style is engaging, even entertaining. I consider this book an essential part of the home library. It is a shame it doesn't have a wider readership in the United States.

In a time when one mostly sees the popular books written by armchair herbalists and sycophantic ND's, I found seeing Dr. Airola's book still in print a distinct pleasure. Dr. Airola not only writes and presents the material well, but he also transmits a charm and a positiveness that is healing in and of its own self. Dr. Airola practiced what he preached--what is in his books are the results of his clinical experience. No Bravo Sierra here.

I'll offer my testimomial here. What is in his book worked for me and worked in three weeks. The M.D.'s failed after three years. The experience moved me enough to study natural medicine in depth to the practitioner level. Dr. Airola's book were the first textbooks. Despite being layman's books, they are chocked full of knowledge.

Should you use this book, be prepared to juice. You need to either grow your own herbs or find good sources since the capsuled stuff in healthfood stores is garbage.

In this book, you will see a diet that is the progenitor of the some of the more recent popular diets, except that Airola's worked and has stood the test of time. The treatments for specific disease are complete, comprehensible, and usually on one or two pages.

One of the beauties of this book is that one who knows nothing of natural healing can take this book and get started right away to heal themselves, gain a strong backbone into natural healing, and turn their live's around.

To the negative, there is no information given on how to make herbal preparations. There is more to herbalism than eating a weed and Dr. Airola just gave the principle herbs for a specific treatment. In most cases, that would fine, however I suggest a good herbal or a practicing herbalist who makes their own brews to help in the preparation.

This book is an excellent first book for the prospective student of natural medicine (or biological medicine as Dr. Airola called it). It would be my first choice if one asked me for a guide to curing themselves, and it should be found to be an indespensible addition to one's library. It is the only book I loan to people and I have been through 3 copies as it gets worn out and stained over time.

As a mother of a five year old, I can't tell you how delighted I am at finding this book. I wish I'd had it five years ago. This book is a must for any mother who wants to raise a healthy child, physically and emotionally.

This book covers a wide range of issues, from breast feeding to nutritional supplements; from herbal and homeopathic remedies to Chinese medicine. In chapter 6, "A Stay-Healthy Plan for the Cold and Flu Season," I found a great list to post on the refrigerator. Ms. Frederick uses a simple and direct writing style to explain everything in an understandable way. It is an ideal handbook for mothers on the run and pressed for time. A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy Children--Naturally

Review Date: 2002-10-13
Sue Frederick has written about natural products for years. When her daughter was born, she consulted experts about the best ways to keep her healthy. She shares all that's she learned in A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy Children--Naturally. She focuses on preventing disease and emphasizes that, while antibiotics can sometimes be very useful, they are not the solution for most childhood ailments. Frederick says that "natural medicine does hold the answers we're looking for."

She begins with breast feeding and the benefits it offers to children's immune systems. She then moves to a discussion of nutrition in general, saying that "the food you feed your child creates the foundation for her future health." Frederick warns strongly against giving children fruit juice, citing the effect all the sugar in it has on juvenile immune systems.

She devotes a chapter to the issue of childhood immunizations, describing each one and emphasizing that parents have the right to choose whether or not to have their children immunized.

Frederick also discusses nurturing, saying that "if your child feels truly loved and knows that you'll always be there for her, that inner peace and sense of security will help strengthen her immunity and ability to fight off illnesses." She includes commentary from a variety of experts, explaining how they've helped their children develop spiritually.

One section of the book is devoted to specific natural remedies for common childhood illness, such as colds, fever, colic, earaches, etc. Frederick then includes a complete discussion of the use of herbs, homeopathy, flower essences, Chinese medicine, and nutritional supplements, all with age-appropriate dosages.

She finishes with a "Child's Materia Medica," which explains how to use various natural remedies, and suggestions for a home health care kit, enabling parents to have everything needed on hand.

Jay Gordon, M.D. writes in the foreword: "Sue Frederick's book has helped me--and would help every doctor, health-care practitioner, and parent--remember one crucial fact: A child's body will heal itself naturally if we stay out of the way and use gentle remedies, wisdom, and guidance." Readers will find that A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy Children--Naturally provides all the information they need to keep their children healthy and happy.

Written by Margaret Smith Peet, ND & Shoshana Zimmerman, ND, My Doctor Says I'm Fine... So Why Do I Feel So Bad? A Self-Help Guide to Restoring Health is a guide for novices to understanding the basic tenets of Eastern medicine, self-observation, and expressions of life-force that are symptomatic of unhealthy diseases and conditions. A handful of black-and-white diagrams illustrate this methodical listing of both physical and spiritual warning signs to look for. From examining one's tongue for signs of vitamin deficiency or disease, to yoga poses designed to counter life-force imbalances, to recommended food plans for promoting dietary health and life-force balance, My Doctor Says I'm Fine... is not a substitute for a physician's examination but rather an excellent prevention and self-help treatment regimen for learning to live well when simply taking a prescribed pill is insufficient.

Finally a practical, applicable book about Ayurveda/Chinese medicine that I can actually use! The first half explains and diagrams (with wonderful, clear drawings and examples of actual people) the amazing diagnostic tools that these systems offer so you can catch your body going out of balance before it degenerates into a serious illness. My son and I spent 2 hours examining our tongues, ears, eyes, faces, and hands, and were able to SEE the indicators for heart disease and diabetes that comes down through my family - and to see what comes through his father's. Then we did life-enhancing foot massages - teenagers will benefit enormously from this information!

The rest of the book is stuffed with info delivered in the most accessible manner. It clarifies the process of re-orienting yourself according to YOUR body-type to live optimally, with lists of food, herbs, yoga postures and more to help every area of life. There's also a great chapter on how to protect yourself while traveling.

I've read many books on this subject, including Deepak Chopra's and David Frawley's but have found nothing that helped me to see MY OWN imbalances by checking my own body so clearly and easily. This will be the book that I recommend to all my clients and use as my baseline.

Finally, a practical. applicable book about Ayurveda/Chinese medicine that I can actually use!

I am impressed! The book is a solid work of meticulously organized information, bringing to our modern day medical scene a breath of fresh air. The book states ancient Eastern concepts without the "mystique" which so often conceals. It offers tools that the reader can easily use to understand and improve health. I am reading and re-reading, and am grateful that "irritations" need not be endured. They can be addressed. I know My Doctor Says I'm Fine will be widely accepted and wildly acclaimed.

I saw this book in a local health food store and thought that it looked like a great resource. I have only had it a short time and can already tell it is going to be used alot. I work in a middle school clinic and I have already used it for information for co-workers as well as a parent who needed advice in treating her children. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about herbs/alternative medicine, etc.

I found the book to be an excellent source of information. I appreciated the fact that research was cited in the book so that a person could find the actual research if they chose to do so.

Reading multiple books and websites about diet, herbs, and nutritional supplements can be overwhelming. I'm fairly new to alternative medicine and supplements, so I was delighted to find a comprehensive book called The Natural Pharmacy at my local bookstore. This book is a well-researched compilation of the latest in natural health. I'd much rather use a resource such as this one than spend hours wading through books and websites every time I have a health concern.

The editor of The Natural Pharmacy, Dr. Alan Gaby, is past President of the American Holistic Medical Association. I own the 3rd Edition which was published in 2006, so I am assured that the book is up-to-date as well as accurate. The content is clear, concise, and well-written, making the information accessible to readers without backgrounds in healthcare. The Natural Pharmacy is divided into three main sections: health concerns, nutritional supplements, and herbs. Serious health conditions such as breast cancer and heart problems are discussed in the book as well as minor conditions like eczema and the common cold. When I have a health concern, I check the first section for recommended herbs, supplements, and dietary changes. Those who are looking for detailed information and research on specific herbs, vitamins, and minerals would find that info in the latter sections. The book is extremely well-organized and easy to navigate, complete with cross-references that are found throughout the book.

The Natural Pharmacy is an excellent book that has been well-researched. I highly recommend this valuable resource to anyone who is interested in a more natural approach to healthcare.

I received this book as a gift several years ago and I look at it for information and ideas every year. I have two other kitchen garden books but this one is the best. It is a gorgeous book full color with fantastic photos and ideas for every kind of space including tiny city balconies (perhaps the previous reviewer missed this chapter). Most importantly I have created some fantastic vegetable gardens using some of the ideas in this book over the years. My neighbors come over and take pictures.

Practical information abounds

I ordered this book from the library and after reading it, felt this was one I simply had to buy. Out of the seven "kitchen garden" books I've read or browsed recently, this one not only inspires with photos and drawings, but also provides extensive information on the variety of vegetables available today by seed and how to grow and harvest them. Then it goes one step further and provides suggestions on how to prepare them. As a seasoned flower gardener just now dipping my toes into the world of vegetable gardening, I found this particular book does the best job of guiding the new kitchen gardener from start (planning the garden) to finish (eating your results).

Profusion Equals Paradisal Gardens

Anna Pavord is a celebrated Great Britain gardening author and editor. I share her philosophy that order coupled with profusion, is the hallmark of the best kitchen gardens. She believes that there is no reason for vegetables and fruits to provide any less drama in the garden than flowers.

This book offers advice on basic cultivation techniques, including sowing and thinning, crop rotation, and growing in greenhouses. The book presents more than 450 attractive color photographs, along with very well illustrated planting designs from a sophisticated potager to a rustic mixed hedge.

Colorists will find the excellent photographs are a font of inspiration, and will take note of her adroit ability to control shape, form, color, and textures to produce stunningly decorative kitchen gardens. One example is a large formal herb garden in Kinoith, Ireland. Massive buttresses of purple-leaved sage prop up a showy cardoon, and mounds of nasturtiums cavort at the feet of a monumental stand of lovage.

She displays designs that are not only decorative, but are indispensable to the avid cook. This was a discount table find for which I am greatly pleased to own and recommend to others as a valuable source of inspiration. It is a most delightful book.

The pictures and information in this book are gorgeous & informative. The only issue I had was that though vegetable gardens are meant to be useful & practical, in many instances the attractive aspects of her gardens neccessitated the plants going to seed, therefore becoming inedible. The gardens were also often quite larger than the average person might want to manage; but I enjoyed dreaming about having the energy & space to implement her designs.

Wonderful book

This is my favorite gardening book. I put in a vegetable garden this year and THIS book was the basis of my handiwork. Beauty and bountiful harvests are the result of hard work. This book was an inspiration for me.
