Natural remedies and speedy recoveryReview Date: 2006-04-22
Dr Dossey shows us what is truly importantReview Date: 2006-02-14
As befits the title Dr Dossey writes with simple elegance. The essays are lucid, well-reasoned, practical and frequently moving. Indeed I experienced the rare feeling that I was receiving genuine wisdom, and was being shown the path to a joyful and meaningful life through paying attention to the small things. So I recommend that the reader learns the principles in this book and takes "route one" to health and happiness
I Felt like I was with my Grandmother!!Review Date: 2006-03-16
As I sat at my grandmothers' feet, many years ago, she told me of the importance of the subtle world around me. She ministered to people struggling in various ways in the back-woods of West Virginia in the early nineteen hundreds. She learned medicine from her grandmother. Her life was rich with stories of healing and her love of nature.
Larry Dosseys' voice in the world is long overdue!
Another Outstanding Contribution from Larry DosseyReview Date: 2006-02-13
In his previous books and papers he has articulated an emerging vision of medicine which goes far beyond a simple mechanical view of the body, and emphasises a model that also addresses the emotional, spiritual and timeless aspects of our lives.
In this book he incorporates and expands upon some of the insights of the burgeoning field of positive psychology. One of the most attractive things about this new work is that he also emphasises the importance of apparently "negative" experiences. I have pointed out in my own work that we need to understand the importance of duality, balance and personal integration: To recommend positive thinking can be disastrous for some people, for whom pessimism and negative cognitions are their natural defense styles. Similarly, there are some people who get sick once stress is over. And the constant drive to boost self-esteem has created many people with narcissistic and sociopathic personality traits. In the same vein, Dossey also points out the importance of bugs, tears, dirt and an occasional a bit of unhappiness for our overall well-being.
This is a book that should be widely read and the principles applied in all our lives.
Highly recommended!

Healing Herbs Are The Way To GoReview Date: 2008-04-12
A welcome addition for personal and community library gardening reference collectionsReview Date: 2007-09-06
Fascinating Biblical informationReview Date: 2006-06-26
After the alphabetical pages, there is a Biblical account of herbs in the Bible (mainly New Testament). This is probably my favorite part of the book.
Then the author has a great resource for other herbal companies in the USA, and gives facts about each company, ways to contact them, and recipes using the herbs in the book (that the people from each company contributed).
At the end is a list of 12 essential herbs for men, 12 essential herbs for children, and 12 essential herbs for women, and for seniors. This is a good starting point for beginners who are overwhelmed!
He also gives tables of the herbs: culinary tables, medicinal tables which are a great easy-reference source. For instance, if you have a headache, you can look under "headache" and see what herbs are helpful for that.
I especially liked the drawings of the individual herbs--they are very well-drawn and detailed (I've always wanted to know what the rest of an asparagus plant looks like!).
I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because I don't like the design of and the artwork on the cover.
Fascinating Guide to Healthy Living with HerbsReview Date: 2007-02-07
After reading this book you may find yourself using Anise in tea, drinking catnip tea when you want to feel calm and using more chives because they are high in Vitamin C. If you love to cook, the information on cinnamon, nutmeg and cocoa will be invaluable.
Through the years I've spend a lot of time looking up information on herbal remedies and this book is one of my favorites because it gives you all the information on one page. Some herb books separate the information and I found the way this book was organized to be very entertaining and helpful.
How can you improve your health and quality of life with herbs?
Where can you find herbal remedies?
The first section includes detailed descriptions of herbs from A to Z. Each page has information along with herbal icons that allow for quick access to the information you are looking for including: description, growing tips, medicinal information, internal or external use, culinary uses, how to prepare, biblical references and cautionary concerns.
The biblical references shed light on the types of aloe mentioned in the Bible:
"The aloes mentioned in the Bible are perfumes that likely came from a tree in India known as "eaglewood." The aloe mentioned in John 19:39 is from the lily family, the same one we use for topical medicinal purposes." ~ pg. 13
Some of the herbs listed include Alfalfa, Aloe Vera, Bergamot, Blessed Thistle, Calendula, Cayenne, Cinnamon, Cranberry, Dandelion, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Garlic, Ginger, Ginseng, Hyssop, Lavender, Myrrh, Olive, Pomegranate, Savory, Tea Tree, Uva Ursi, Valerian and many more.
The page about cloves explains how it is used in incense, soaps and scented candles. I also like making pomanders by decorating oranges with cloves. I just made one for my kitchen and there are lots of recipes online. Some people make these during the holiday season, but for some reason I was in the mood to make one after the holiday season.
I will say that I also agree with the author about Wormwood. I recommend avoiding this herb if at all possible or only taking it after you have talked to your doctor and if you don't intend to take it for an extended period of time. This can cause serious problems and the benefits may not be worth the risks to your health. Wormwood is also found in absinthe (highly toxic because it contains a neurotoxin called thujone - also found in sage and cedar oil), which is known to be dangerous to health and can cause irreversible damage to the nervous system, convulsions, blindness, hallucinations, and mental deterioration. Artists, writers and poets have used this herb to enhance creativity, except the expansion of creativity doesn't seem to be worth losing your life or experiencing the side effects like nausea, tremors, insomnia and vertigo.
As the author notes: "Wormwood is mentioned numerous times in the Bible and always in reference to calamity and bitter experience." The author also explains why you should not use too much sage, normally used during the holiday season or when cooking a chicken dinner. While this book states that Siberian ginseng is a "recognized cure for insomnia" you don't want to take the herb at night because then it could cause insomnia.
"On trips to the Oregon coast, nothing is more pleasant than long walks on the beach together. My wife and I explore the beach, the rocks, find interesting pieces of driftwood to lug home. But we also notice long, cylindrical ocean plants, uprooted by the tides...Ocean herbs are considered detoxifiers for the body, helping rid the body of excess fluids and fatty wastes." ~ pg. 85
If you want to try the seaweed bath, look up LUSH Big Blue - it has seaweed and is a very interesting experience. This book recommends seaweed as a brain food and I've been taking "Sea Vegg" on a regular basis. There is also a recipe for an oat and honey facial scrub.
I especially enjoyed reading the sections on herbs used in the kitchen, especially rosemary, savory and tarragon. The last sections of the book include an interesting journey through the teachings of Christ in regards to plants mentioned in the Bible. A Table of Medicinal Herbs for External and Internal use is also included.
There are also recipes:
Poached Salmon in Herbs
Green Salad with Herb Vinaigrette
Oregano Garlic Bread
Herb Grilled Lamb
Lavender Cookies
Boursin-Style Cheese Spread
Gingerbread Cookies
Chai Tea
To find out how to use herbs you are growing in your garden, there is also a Table of Culinary Herbs. Fennel can be added to salmon or breads and savory can be added to soups. I like using it when making a Tuna Fish sandwich, along with dill.
To make this book even more helpful, the author has lists of herbs for women, men, children and seniors. A glossary is useful for words like tincture and compress and the index is useful for finding specific herbs, remedies or health issues you are researching.
I didn't know a book on herbs could be this much fun. Dennis Ellingson is also a pastor and counselor so he includes spiritual elements along with recipes, advice and solutions to common health problems. This book is a result of his own research and he states that this is not a book of "medical advice" although this book presents a variety of remedies that will be very helpful to anyone looking into the value and use of herbs. I feel much safer trying herbs after reading this book and since herbs can be powerful and do have side effects, this book presents herbs in a realistic way so you can make wise decisions about your health.

I'll offer my testimomial here. What is in his book worked for me and worked in three weeks. The M.D.'s failed after three years. The experience moved me enough to study natural medicine in depth to the practitioner level. Dr. Airola's book were the first textbooks. Despite being layman's books, they are chocked full of knowledge.
Should you use this book, be prepared to juice. You need to either grow your own herbs or find good sources since the capsuled stuff in healthfood stores is garbage.
In this book, you will see a diet that is the progenitor of the some of the more recent popular diets, except that Airola's worked and has stood the test of time. The treatments for specific disease are complete, comprehensible, and usually on one or two pages.
One of the beauties of this book is that one who knows nothing of natural healing can take this book and get started right away to heal themselves, gain a strong backbone into natural healing, and turn their live's around.
To the negative, there is no information given on how to make herbal preparations. There is more to herbalism than eating a weed and Dr. Airola just gave the principle herbs for a specific treatment. In most cases, that would fine, however I suggest a good herbal or a practicing herbalist who makes their own brews to help in the preparation.
This book is an excellent first book for the prospective student of natural medicine (or biological medicine as Dr. Airola called it). It would be my first choice if one asked me for a guide to curing themselves, and it should be found to be an indespensible addition to one's library. It is the only book I loan to people and I have been through 3 copies as it gets worn out and stained over time.

A must-have book for every motherReview Date: 1999-12-29
This book covers a wide range of issues, from breast feeding to nutritional supplements; from herbal and homeopathic remedies to Chinese medicine. In chapter 6, "A Stay-Healthy Plan for the Cold and Flu Season," I found a great list to post on the refrigerator. Ms. Frederick uses a simple and direct writing style to explain everything in an understandable way. It is an ideal handbook for mothers on the run and pressed for time. This book will also make a great gift for a new mother.

A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy Children--NaturallyReview Date: 2002-10-13
She begins with breast feeding and the benefits it offers to children's immune systems. She then moves to a discussion of nutrition in general, saying that "the food you feed your child creates the foundation for her future health." Frederick warns strongly against giving children fruit juice, citing the effect all the sugar in it has on juvenile immune systems.
She devotes a chapter to the issue of childhood immunizations, describing each one and emphasizing that parents have the right to choose whether or not to have their children immunized.
Frederick also discusses nurturing, saying that "if your child feels truly loved and knows that you'll always be there for her, that inner peace and sense of security will help strengthen her immunity and ability to fight off illnesses." She includes commentary from a variety of experts, explaining how they've helped their children develop spiritually.
One section of the book is devoted to specific natural remedies for common childhood illness, such as colds, fever, colic, earaches, etc. Frederick then includes a complete discussion of the use of herbs, homeopathy, flower essences, Chinese medicine, and nutritional supplements, all with age-appropriate dosages.
She finishes with a "Child's Materia Medica," which explains how to use various natural remedies, and suggestions for a home health care kit, enabling parents to have everything needed on hand.
Jay Gordon, M.D. writes in the foreword: "Sue Frederick's book has helped me--and would help every doctor, health-care practitioner, and parent--remember one crucial fact: A child's body will heal itself naturally if we stay out of the way and use gentle remedies, wisdom, and guidance." Readers will find that A Mother's Guide to Raising Healthy Children--Naturally provides all the information they need to keep their children healthy and happy.

WOW!Review Date: 2001-06-18
The rest of the book is stuffed with info delivered in the most accessible manner. It clarifies the process of re-orienting yourself according to YOUR body-type to live optimally, with lists of food, herbs, yoga postures and more to help every area of life. There's also a great chapter on how to protect yourself while traveling.
I've read many books on this subject, including Deepak Chopra's and David Frawley's but have found nothing that helped me to see MY OWN imbalances by checking my own body so clearly and easily. This will be the book that I recommend to all my clients and use as my baseline.

The editor of The Natural Pharmacy, Dr. Alan Gaby, is past President of the American Holistic Medical Association. I own the 3rd Edition which was published in 2006, so I am assured that the book is up-to-date as well as accurate. The content is clear, concise, and well-written, making the information accessible to readers without backgrounds in healthcare. The Natural Pharmacy is divided into three main sections: health concerns, nutritional supplements, and herbs. Serious health conditions such as breast cancer and heart problems are discussed in the book as well as minor conditions like eczema and the common cold. When I have a health concern, I check the first section for recommended herbs, supplements, and dietary changes. Those who are looking for detailed information and research on specific herbs, vitamins, and minerals would find that info in the latter sections. The book is extremely well-organized and easy to navigate, complete with cross-references that are found throughout the book.
The Natural Pharmacy is an excellent book that has been well-researched. I highly recommend this valuable resource to anyone who is interested in a more natural approach to healthcare.

Profusion Equals Paradisal Gardens Review Date: 2007-02-20
This book offers advice on basic cultivation techniques, including sowing and thinning, crop rotation, and growing in greenhouses. The book presents more than 450 attractive color photographs, along with very well illustrated planting designs from a sophisticated potager to a rustic mixed hedge.
Colorists will find the excellent photographs are a font of inspiration, and will take note of her adroit ability to control shape, form, color, and textures to produce stunningly decorative kitchen gardens. One example is a large formal herb garden in Kinoith, Ireland. Massive buttresses of purple-leaved sage prop up a showy cardoon, and mounds of nasturtiums cavort at the feet of a monumental stand of lovage.
She displays designs that are not only decorative, but are indispensable to the avid cook. This was a discount table find for which I am greatly pleased to own and recommend to others as a valuable source of inspiration. It is a most delightful book.
