This book was in my doctor's office and I tried to finish it while my husband was waiting for his appointment. Couldn't get it finished, of course, so had to order my own from Amazon. Very fun, very interesting, and very helpful information.

I have not read this book yet, but it is clear to me from reading the reviews by Thomas More "1535" and lilbitz that they both have mistaken this title for Natural Cures "They" Don't Want You to Know About by Kevin Trudeau.
While I agree with these reviews, at least in part, when applied to Trudeau's book, it is unfair to this book to show these reviews. Please give this book a fair chance.

This book is a wealth of knowledge that explains the healthiest and best ways to combat and prevent all sorts of illnesses and problems. I have found it to be one of the best sources of useful tidbits in a long while. I am a very health concious person and this book has taught me more in just a few chapters than I had known previously

You can't call it "Natural prostate healers"

Review Date: 2007-08-01
You can't call this book "Natural prostate healers". From the very beginning the author refer readers to AMA goctors. And he recommends readers to use some alpha-blockers, which actually will make your prostate grow. That's why doctors like prescribe them so much- you will be their customer untill your prostate will grow so much that you will ask them to do surgery. Looks like the author have the information for this book collected from different sources and just mixed it all together. Example- in one Chapter he wrote about alpha-blocker Hytrin. In another one he wrote about benefits of ajpha-blocker Terazosin... Obviously he doesn't know that Terazosin is the brand name for Hytrin. When he write about patients who successfully treated BPH or Prostate cancer with natural cures he doesn't provide any links to where he's got this information.

Overall a good book but needs updating and corrections...

Recently read the book "Natural Prostate Healers" by Mike Fillon (with foreward by Dr. Barken). I noted that the book had great cautions in regard to elevated IGF-1 levels being predictors / causations for prostate cancer and yet have noted that research has pretty clearly refuted any such connections.

See:
http://www.thehormoneshop.com/prostate.htm
http://www.drcranton.com/hrt/HGH_found_safe.htm
http://www.auslifeextend.com.au/research.html

Additionally there is a degree of concern in the book's recommendations which could lead to an overexposure to soy in general. While certain very specific elements of soy (in quite moderate dosages) appear to positively affect prostate enlargement, the case history for "preventing" or "curing" prostate cancer appears less so and needs to be balanced out by concerns related to overconsumption of soy (considerable research as to soy's adverse effect on thyroid functioning for example).

http://thyroid.about.com/cs/soysdownsides/

Likewise, zinc oversupplementation apparently has surfaced as cause for concern:

http://my.webmd.com/content/article/70/80974.htm

"Zinc Supplements May Double Risk of Advanced Prostate Cancer"

Finally, I found that the book was inconsistent in other statements.

For example, on page 3 the book stated "suffice it to say, no prostate, no orgasm..." and yet on page 140 it states that one can have one's prostate completely removed and still have an orgasm. There is an obvious need to update and/or correct any future editions...

Practical guidance on avoiding prostate problems.

Women and men have different thresholds for consulting physicians. Women schedule doctor appointments regularly. I am told this is less a matter of choice than necessity. Regular peaks under the hood are a requirement for getting refills of birth control pills, and later, hormone replacements. Lacking this motivation, men see doctors only if they can't stop the bleeding after cutting themselves or they are unconscious. As they age many add a third reason: their prostate has begun acting up. Problem prostates cause many of the problems that make old age a less than glorious time, including painful urination, difficulty in maintaining an erection, frequent nighttime urination and the general inability to write your name in the snow. Realizing that the baby boomers were about to hit the problem prostate years, a cottage industry has developed to convince men to have their prostates examined on a regular basis. Following the proven formula of scaring people with statistics, the authors of these "public service" brochures have focused on prostate cancer. It is the perfect disease for shocking headlines. If you live long enough, you develop prostate cancer, period. What these well meaning attempts at educating men usually fail to mention is that prostate cancer develops very, very slowly. What they almost never mentioned is how much you can do to reduce the discomfort of prostate problems and cut dramatically your risk of prostate cancer. By putting an emphasis on these positive themes Mike Fillon's Natural Prostate Healers: A Breakthrough Program For Preventing And Treating Common Prostate Problems provides a refreshing look at an important men's health issue. What I like best about Fillon's book is that he has taken the approach of a journalist surveying new terrain. The result is that important facts that tend to be minimized in more medically-oriented books rise to their proper perspective. Two points stand out. First, Fillon stresses the lack of a cause-and-effect linkage between common prostate problems and prostate cancer. There is a presumption -- largely created by public service ads -- that 2 a.m. visits to the toilet are nature's idiot light for warning you of prostate cancer. Fillon debunks this notion, and goes on to suggests common sense ways of managing these problems, chiefly through minor changes in diet and exercise. Fillon's second contribution is to change our view of prostate cancer from being inevitable to becoming avoidable. The basis for this claim is the extreme global variation in prostate cancer rates, between 3.5 cases per 100,0000 in Singapore to 49.8 cases in Sweden. The rate in America is 32.2 cases. Rather than let this statistic hang in the air as some sort of X-file mystery, Fillon seizes upon it to suggest ways in which minor modifications of your diet to move you toward the favorable end of the statistical scale. Prostate problems will eventually pose some degree of difficulty for everyone who leaves the toilet seat up. Fillon's journalistic approach treats the subject with a degree of balance that is both enlightening and, through the inclusion of recipes that promote prostate health, quite useful as well. Natural Prostate Healers belongs in the home of every baby boomer, and you might want to send a copy to dad too.

Fillon makes a solid case that prostate cancer is avoidable.

I was looking for more. However, half the book is self accessments, and the other half is filled with master-or-the-obvious advice. Eat well, sleep well, have sex, exercise, watch stress, etc. Nothing new, accept perhaps the suggestion that men don't eat meet more than 3 times weekly? This due to added hormones in meet. So, I took it as, switch to organic, and push legislators to ban additives the US now allows, but EU prohibits.

Don't let the title fool you. This book is not just about Testosterone ("T"). It is about all aspects of men's health after age 40. I found the advice good, on topics like sleep (which affects both "T", and health in general), mental attitude, and things like obesity. The discussion on how being obese basically turns men more feminine makes you want to go out and exercise right now ! I found this book well-written, scientific, but at the same time, like a friendly conversation. The doctor says up front that he wants it that way, and thus, it is not a "too scientific" book, but there is "enough" science in it. I learned for instance about the hormonal systems, and how things like coffee and alcohol affect them. This is a very useful book for men over 40. I think any man will find tons of useful health tips in here.

The title says testosterone factor, but the book is full of questionaires, some people may find them useful, I didn't, the book does give a lot of information on increasing testosterone in the body, but no real information on getting testosterone from natural sources and gives no mention on PINE POLLEN which at this stage is the largest known natural source of testosterone. The book would better to included under Male Health Improvement.

This book gives a simple explanation of what the Bach Flower Essences are and how they can be used. However, I did not get much more information from this book than from a 50 page pamphlet offered for free by the Dr. Edward Bach Centre.

There are many opinions about Buddhism and Karma mixed in with the information about the essences. I have no objection to reading about these things, but I feel the strong religious slant of the book should have been mentioned in the book's description.

Great book for beginners!

I have used Bach Flower Remedies successfully over the last 15 years but this is the first book I've purchased with the intent to learn how to self prescribe remedies. It's easy to read and a great book for someone ready to dive in and learn the basics. The descriptions of the remedies are concise and the directions for preparing your own remedies are very easy to follow. I highly recommend it.

Hoping to find some real alternatives to antibiotics, I was sorely disappointed. This book is just the same old "naturalist" magical thinking. Filled with wild, unsubstantiated claims both against antibiotics (and doctors in general) and for a "natural" lifestyle, the authors put forth the same tired thesis: Eat only vegetables, move out of the city, and consume vitamin C in doses equivalent to 2000 oranges a day and you'll never get sick." They do offer some natural aid to alleviate symptoms when the magic inevitably fails, but no real remedies to help your body kill bacteria. Their theory appears to be that bacteria are a figmet of the modern hypochondriac's imagination.

If you're sick, go to the doctor. Don't waste your money on this book.

I work in the Health and Fitness field.I am also an athlete who exercises, eats perfectly and takes appropriate vitamins.....but for as long as I can remember I always had some sort of cold or cough at least once a month and guaranteed illness after serious athletic competition. The Doctors felt it was because of my work and my exposure to 100`s of people a day, and in a way they were right. The true problem was the stregnth of my immune system. Now 6 months since I read the book,I havent been sick a single day!The chapter on Vitamin C had the strongest effect on my current state of "Wellness". My thanks to the Authors ! Outstanding !

I read health and nutrition books for pleasure and this was one I could barely get through. It was translated and perhaps thats why it is so hard to follow. The book skips around and gives little solid information. Also,if you are looking for information on how to use chitosan as an aid to weight loss, you will NOT find any information here. The info. on weight loss is limited to a paragraph and sketchy at best. Maybe chitin-chitosan is a miracle but you will be hard pressed to understand why in this book.

This book details the effectiveness of chitin-chitosan in assisting the human body's natural healing power to combat diseases and disorders that modern Western and Oriental medicinal have not been able to surpass and without the side effects. The chapters are broken down by pathologies and begins with an overview of the disease itself. Shortly thereafter, it takes you through the experiences of those who have taken chitin-chitosan as a supplement for their illness and how their health had improved within a short period of time. Then starts another chapter on another disease following the same outline. For those who are unfamiliar with medical terminologies, this book may be hard to follow at times. However, when they can, they try to explain them in laymen's understanding. Overall, I found the experiences and information in this book to be quite impressive. It is stressed that chitin-chitosan is fairly new in the medical field and is still under further research.

Some of the remedies will be helpful and help avoid or put off the need to pay a physician to write expensive prescriptions. It will certainly reveal some of the causes of high blood pressure. I found this book to be a summary of all the collective knowledge I have previously obtained on the subject of high blood pressure. I purchased the book looking forward to following their suggested eating plan, however, the receipes do not contain any information with respect to number of servings, calories, sodium content, fat content, etc. You never quite know if that Spinach Pie you just wolfed down was meant to be shared amongst 2 or 6 people. Because of this, I had to give up as I just don't have the time to calculate appropriate servings size, etc.

Like Tenney's other classic book, this one again provides essentially no empirical support for thousands of claims. Given that Congress has gutted the power of the FDA to control the snake oil salespeople of herbal remedies, a book like this COULD fill in the gap. Rather, it is a compendium of hearsay, tenacious beliefs, and wishful thinking.

If you want to scream when an expectant mom pops Tylenol for a light headache or says she doesn't know where the whole foods store is, this is the book for you. Joy Gardner, author of The New Healing Yourself, offers a great text about natural remedies during pregnancy and labor.

Starting with preconception (including natural ways of regulating ovulation) through all the common complaints of pregnancy, Gardner offers ways of preventing problems, as well as curing them. She recommends herbal and natural cures for problems including

-swelling of hands and feet
-the common cold
-varicose veins
-frequent urination
-infections

Even if you're not completely into natural remedies, this is a useful book because it explores how to cure yourself if the drug you would normally take is dangerous during pregnancy. A great primer and resource to have around.
