I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor, spiritual seeker and avid outdoors person and I have been looking for a way to bring these aspects together. Phillip Sutton Chard's book "The Healing Earth" has shown me the way. Chard not only applies psychological insight to the practice of psychotherapy but actually uses nature as the "therapist." His case studies illustrate how nature has the power to heal and change our lives, validates our own experiences and empowers us to use the natural world in the practice of psychotherapy. Chard's book redefines "sanity" as if the whole world mattered.

This book deserves much more attention. I intend to recommend it to my career coaching clients. The author emphasizes that we don't always figure out what we need by "mouth aerobics." Getting out and experiencing nature will help us find where we are.

As psychotherapist Philip Chard beautifully and compellingly writes in his deeply touching book, The Healing Earth, "all of us are looking for home." After reading this book, I am filled with a sense of awe at the many lessons Mother Earth can teach us about our lives and ourselves. I am sure your soul--your true home--will too be touched in a profound way as you read his words, experience his poignant and effective exercises, and renew your connection with the earth. I loved this unique and exceptional book! Enjoy these pearls.

Reading this book brings forward some of my most wondrous moments with Mother Earth. One cannot be touched by the Grand Canyon or a 360 degree turquoise and magenta sunset without being changed forever. I have always known that my "spiritual home" exists outside in the fresh air amongst the perfection of flower faces. Philip Chard shares these feelings and more, and does it so eloquently.

This is an excellent book, and it worked for me. I went from being near sighted and needing glasses to 20/20 vision (to the amazement of my eye doctor). I have also been bothered with light sensistive eyes since my childhood, and my eyes are now comfortable even in brilliant sunshine.

I don't have to wear glasses because of this book!

An excellent book! When I first started looking into alternatives to contacts and glasses I was lucky enough to have a friend refer this book to me. I started reading it and immediately began to apply some of the simple vision exercises. My eyesight improved radically! - About an immediate 75% improvement (towards what I remember from youth). This book had lots of simple eye exercises I could do during short 2 - 5 minute breaks during my workday. It was also really helpful in showing me how to deal with the other mind/body issues related to my deteriorated vision as well as simply helpful instruction on how to avoid eyestrain and the blurriness that comes with it now and in future. Due to these methods, one of my friends who has worn glasses for half their life has totally repaired their eyesight to the point they feel confident enough to have thrown out all their glasses et al! I was lucky enough to find this book early and I've only just begun! Five stars for the lady that keeps me from having to wear glasses!!! Thank you my friend and thank you Janet!

Frankly, to keep your eye balls in peak condition, learn & practise the natural vision improvement exercises in this book!

NATURAL VISION IMPROVEMENT
by Janet Goodrich

I have owned this wonderful book since the late eighties, when I started to have an ardent desire to learn more about the eye-brain connection. I have deliberately bought it despite its new agey connotations.

I have learned that, whatever we learn in a lifetime, as much as 90% will enter us through our eyes. Our brains are stimulated more by visual cues than any other senses. Our eyes also form a very significant part of our brains, some two-thirds of which are fully dedicated to vision & associated processing. Jokes aside, sexual attraction relies greatly on vision! Despite its comparative size, each eye ball has more significant moving parts than the Columbia space shuttle!

I love to read & I am an avid as well as a voracious reader. (From early '92 to mid-2004, I actually owned a small bookstore. It fueled & bankrolled my reading pursuits.) Naturally, I want to keep my eye balls in peak condition.

I was introduced to the book by chance. I did not buy the book on the grounds that I had wanted to get rid of my glasses. Today, I still wear my glasses, only when I drive or watch action movies on TV. When I read or work on my laptop, I don't need my glasses at all. This is inspite of the fact that my laptop screen display has been configured with small font size, especially my Internet Explorer, which allows me to read large chunks of information at one glance.

The most productive learning experiences I got out of this book are the 'natural vision improvement' exercises introduced by the author. They are:

- Palming exercise;
- Sunning exercise;
- Near/Far Focus exercise;
- Peripheral Vision exercise;

I have done these exercises for more than fifteen years. Oftentimes, I could amaze myself - & my friends - particularly when I could read relatively small prints on distant sign-boards or posters. I have also combined the vision exercises with some of the 'Brain Gym' exercises, namely, The Owl, Neck Roll, Cross Crawl & Brain Buttons. Additionally, I do a lot of diaphragmatic breathing exercises. I find all these exercises very useful in maintaining my active physiological frame of mind as well as my sharp mental focus when I read.

I have also taught these exercises to professional adults in my creativity classes, as well as to students in the schools. I have also shared them with my own friends. The feedback from them has always been positive.

Of course, from the book, I have also achieved a much better understanding of the eye-brain connection. If you are interested in this book, my suggestion is to read it with an open mind!

Frankly, if you want to keep your eye balls in peak condition, learn & practise the natural vision improvement exercises in this wonderful book! They have been field tested by me for more than fifteen years!

This well conceived and instructive volume combines empirical data and wholistic methods for just about every kind of eye condition short of blindness.
I met Janet Goodrich at a vision improvement course at Crystal Waters. She is one of the most interesting and eccentric ( in a pleasant way) people I have ever met. At the course I not only improved my vision, albeit marginally, but also lost weight. I don't know if she still lives in Australia.
These natural methods are intense and so a lot of people probably won't have time to use them but I can testify that they work, although very gradually. Few people have the patience these days to stick to these routines unfortunately.
If you ever read these reviews, Janet, best wishes.
Regards, Mike.

This is defintely an overall positive book on a very negative topic. The author here explains a lot of different ways that you can get the serotinin back to normal without having to deal with drug therapy.

The one problem about this book is that at times it is hard to get thru. The author throws in a lot of information that I'm sure a lot of us wont understand. I wish it was just a little more simplified. FOr example, in one chapter, he explains how a vitamen b6 can be more effective then an antidepresent in treating severe depression. However, he doesnt list the dosage or the amount of vitamen b6 that might be required to take. (that can be a bit of a problem for some).

Yet, this book is amazingly written, anaylized, and hopeful. Its good to know that someone really researched all of these facts and figures. He had a much different outlook on the whole deal as he broke down several vital stastics that the mass media and drug conpanies would never want to admit.

Despite its uplifting appeal, This is more of a book for a professional therapist rather then a client. I'd suggest for the client to read some important parts of this book to the therapist. A lot of this information is complicated and since Syd doesn't list the dosages and the "How exacltys" to get rolling on the correct bandwagon. Almost all of these methods are hard to persue solely.

But again this is a good book and I hope it gets more recongition then it has gotten in drugged america.

As a psychologist wanting my clients to be educated on the biochemistry of depression and possible solutions, I have found this to be the best of all the alternatives I have read. It discusses all the treatments rather than focusing on one alone, as many books do. It is well written, easy to understand, and treats the reader as if he or she is intelligent enough to grasp a good deal of information. I think this book would help everyone in therapy, and would also help therapists in their attempts to help.

THE book on depression

Review Date: 2006-03-21
If you're looking to treat depression without using drugs, this is the book to get. The book is packed with almost every type of therapy known to cure depression. If there's any academic research on the subject, Baumel mentions the study and also tells us whether it's an uncontrolled or controlled study (something I appreciate as an academic). He usually explains how the study was conducted in enough detail that it can be replicated at home. This means that he included supplement dosages and length of time needed to see results. He also mentions how to purchase St. John's Wort and light therapy devices, which could save hundreds of dollars.

The way to use this book is to read the therapy, see if it matches your symptoms, decide whether you're willing to make the commitment (e.g., am I willing to take B6 for the next 6 months?), and then to try it. I had to try several different therapies until I found ones that worked for me. If one didn't work for me, I would read another section of this book and choose a new therapy to try. One problem with the book is that it covered some therapies in limited detail, and sometimes I needed to look up additional information in other sources.

Before getting this book, I tried looking up information online, but there was too much noise rather than real information to get any use out of what I was reading. This book cut through the noise and gave a concise summary of therapies that I could use to help myself.

In summary, the book is well-researched and an excellent resource. Using this book plus some free online information, I cured my moderate chronic depression in three months without drugs. Thank you, Syd Baumel, for writing this book!

Forget about "touchy feely" talk about herbal remedies. If you're a skeptic, this book will change your mind about St. John's Wort and what BRAND you buy. Covers a staggering number of therapies in great detail: some you probably know like electric shock therapy, Prozac and cognitive therapy. Other lesser known therapies include Omega-3, 5-HTP, SAM-e, and Tyrosine. The author did his homework. Citing numerous clinical trials, studies, and on-line news groups, I found this reading a bit overwhelming or too dry at times, but only because of the author's thorough investigation. All in all, it was well worth it. Makes your doctors sit up and take notes when you talk about how YOU want to treat your depression. (that alone is worth it). An excellent reference that grows with you as your treatment for depression evolves.

This book will easily open your mind to metaphysics, quantum physics, and the VALIDITY of alternative healing therapies (and practitioners to seek after if you're chronically ill and hopeless like I was). I don't know how to convince you, but if you are sick and looking for miracles there are people mentioned in this book who can actually cure most ailments by unimaginable means. I have contacted these healers myself and am being healed as I write. This book leads you to a wonderful shortcut to the medical treatments of the future that probably won't be accepted by society for, I am told, about 50 to 100 years from now. If you're diseased or chronically ill - or know someone who is - take a chance on your own serendipitous fate of coming across this book.

I found this book insightful and inspirational. Randy's writing style was right on the mark. This is a very personal story and journey.

So many books written about alternative therapies today are heavy-handed and decidedly one-sided against modern medicine.

Randy takes a lighter tact. He tells the story of how he and his wife were slowly "pushed" into alternative methods due to allopathic medicines' inability to find the upstream cause of his wife's condition and the continuing pattern of "handoffs" from one allopathic practitioner to another.

I find them both courageous. It's hard to put your life in someone's hands when that someone isn't a doctor. We're taught from young that doctors are the final frontier when something ails the body.

But Randy and his wife weren't looking for PhDs and wall plaques, they were looking for answers to a condition that took much of his wife's vitality and nearly killed her on several occasions.

One of the best books I've read - I couldn't put it down.

nothing else like it ever written!

I am a medical physician. I have purchased and perused scores of well-written books put out by experienced practitioners for other health professionals. Many of them have proved quite useful. None however has given me the sense of what it is like to be the bewildered patient who has just seen a dozen primary care and specialist physicians for a steadily worsening condition, and now does not know where to turn. This book does. I work in an Emergency Department. I see a number of people there, frequently at odd hours, who arrive searching for answers we are hard-pressed to give them there. I think they come to us because they simply don't know where else to turn. Unlike the nicely worked-out treatment guidelines we learn in medical school, there is no clear protocol for those who "fail" our allopathic therapies. And, this is at a time when so many need so much more than what we are presently trained to offer. Diagnosis Unknown explores the actual experience of what it is like to be young, previously healthy, suddenly ill and steadily declining, and with not even a medical diagnosis (let alone medical therapy) in sight. Imagine having already seen every available medical specialist relevant to your condition, and steadily getting worse. Where would you then turn? Massage? Radionics? Acupuncture? Electrodermal screening? This book takes the reader through all of these, and quite a bit more. It is such a handy experiential guide that I have been recommending it to patients and colleagues alike.

This book gives an incredible insight into both conventional and alternative medicine. Although the subject is very serivous the author turns it into a humourous mystery novel.

I have recommended this book to over 20 people and without exception they report back that they couldn't put it down. Most people say they read it in one sitting or in 2 to 3 days.

This book reads like a detective novel.

When I started to read this book I had no idea I would be awake at 2:00am unable to put it down. It is written with the sense of suspense that a who-done-it has. I am a health care professional and although I have a great deal of respect for "modern" medicine, I have all too often witnessed patients made worse by our interventions. I so enjoyed the self disclosure that the author brings to his writing. The reader can readily identify with the search and sympathize with Linda in her desperate illness. The book has given me a great reading list and opened my eyes to methods of diagnosis and treatment that I would never have known about. I also appreciate the direct voice that the author uses - very clear - not on a soap box - simply sharing their adventure. It would be easy, considering their experience, to use this book to vent their collective spleens at the medical community. The battles between the AMA, et al. and alternative medicine were reported factualy without added fuel, allowing for the reader to absorb the information and make up his or her own mind. I recommend this book very highly for anyone who desires to take charge of their health and would like to share how a delightful and charming couple managed to take charge of theirs.

I've had this book for MONTHS and I still discover chapters I haven't seen before! *LOL* I swear, this little baby has so much information packed into it I would find it exceptionally hard to NOT something great about it. And it IS great, you can find just about anything in here and the recommendations are GOOD.

The book has hundreds of pages, and the pages are printed very thin. Normally this would be a two or three volume boook set if were printed with the usual type of paper. It is well worth the money - no doubts about that! But do make sure your bookshelf is strong, too. Because this book is *heavy!* :)

The history of the discovery of native use of essiac by Rene Caisse and how she was able to use it successfully to help a large number of people is very encouraging to potential users of essiac today. I have purchased several copies of this book and given them away to cancer sufferers who have immediately began using the tea with great trust and hope. The odds of being helped by essiac presented in this book are so much better than most cancer patients could imagine that they are eager to try it. Every cancer patient should read this book and then make up their mind about how they wish to combat their disease!

The Extraordinary Healing Power of Ordinary Things is for anyone interested in healthcare and healthy living. Dr. Larry Dossey, a clinical physician, explores the broadest definition of "health" through this book. From the purely physical to the purely mental - all aspects of a healthy life are explored and examined. Essentially, this book is for anyone seeking to improve their health without pills or procedures.

The concept of Dr. Dossey's philosophy is simple - "optimistic people are more likely to want to be healthy and to believe they can be healthy." From this, Dossey demonstrates through medical fact, published studies, and his own extensive experience how profoundly influential this simple belief can be.

All of the information in The Extraordinary Healing Power of Ordinary Things is drawn from such a wide range of sources. This book is more than a philosophy - it's science. Every last one of Dossey's arguments are supported by recognized studies and real-life scenarios.

Dossey explores a wide range of topics - the history of crying, optimism as an evolutionary tool, the power of forgetting - and the list goes on and on. All of this leads to and culminates in his belief that a positive attitude can have a huge effect on a patient's health problems. He proves not only the power of emotions on mental health, but also their immense influence on physical health.

I am deeply impressed by Dr. Dossey's astounding work. Beyond the wealth of knowledge and information he provides, he does it in a truly enjoyable and delightful way. His wonderful sense of humor and self-deprecating anecdotes make this a joy to read. His considerable experience and expertise aside, Dossey is also an exceptional storyteller.

In his book Larry Dossay, a Vietnam War veteran, shares his wisdom regarding the truly important things in life. We learn that the secret to a joyful and meaningful life is hidden among the simple, small things. The author talks about basics of natural healing and recovery, investigating the medical research that acknowledges and supports natural remedies. It is not a surprise that the best healer is the practice of living in agreement with nature. Dr. Dossay also draws our attention to the importance of duality, and experiencing the seemingly negative things in live. Surprisingly, not only stress, but also an occasional dose of unhappiness turn out to be beneficial to our overall well-being. Another example of Dossay's unconventional wisdom is the discovery of the healing power of prayers.

This is an exceptionally good reading. The author's unusual wisdom will bring about extraordinary results one applied in practice. Another great book that I highly recommend as the addition to this book is Can We Live 150.

Thank God for Larry Dossey!!

As I sat at my grandmothers' feet, many years ago, she told me of the importance of the subtle world around me. She ministered to people struggling in various ways in the back-woods of West Virginia in the early nineteen hundreds. She learned medicine from her grandmother. Her life was rich with stories of healing and her love of nature.

Larry Dosseys' voice in the world is long overdue!

I felt like I was in training as an apprentice while reading this book. It is an excellent source of knowledge for Rainforest herbs learned from a H'men (Shaman or Mayan Healer) and for some plants we grow in the US. My only regret is not reading this book prior to visiting Belize via a cruise ship and not going to Ixchel Farm. (I definitely will on next trip). The source of reference in the back of the book is excellent for resources on Herbs. There are recipes for teas and tinctures useful for all kinds of ailments. Rosita also shared her knowledge learned from Don Elijio Panti on massaging the uterus to center a tipped uterus which is the cause for many of women's health problems today.(if we could only teach our US doctor's this cure!). Very Spiritual Book also- teaching the Spiritual side of healing and how important that is in the process of healing. The lessons I learned from this book, I will practice in my life. I read this book prior to reading her other book "Sastun". It is also an excellent book about the Mayan healer Don Elijio Panti and her apprenticeship- I couldn't put this book down.

I picked up this book at a gift shop in Belize for the waiting room of my chiropratic practice in New York. It has attracted much attention and interest from my patients. The book is simple to follow and brings the timeless wisdom of an ancient healing tradition into practical use. In one case I recommended a remedy for headaches suggested by Ms. Arvigo. In conjuction with a program of chiropractic adjustments the remedy proved to be quite helpful. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in natural healing.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Finally a book that gets rid of the hit-or-miss, one-size-fits-all, try-anything-that-might-work-to-get-relief approach to treating peri-menopause and menopause. Progesterone cream just wasn't doing anything for me......and rightly so....from taking the test in the book, I learned that progesterone is NOT what I need. I also didn't recognise some of my symptoms as being menopausal until I read about my specific type. Now I have a better understanding of why I have been so miserable these last 2 1/2 years and I have the tools to get better! I bought the book two days ago, started an herbal formula program today, and I already feel better. Every woman over 40 needs this book!

I am a practicing Naturopathic Physician. Dr Collins, has provided me with a great tool to further my understanding of the complexity of menopause. I have had cases that have not responded to what was a resonable treatment plan. After reading "What's your menopause type" I now have a new insight into those patients and their needs. To have the "types" defined and put into categories lends to a greater understanding for the practitioner. The "menopause Type Questionnaire", combined with the labatory hormone levels is very useful information that should help everyone who is working with this transitional time in a womans life. The information on the nutrition and supplements is excellent. I applaud Dr Collins for his commitment and dedication to an area of medicine that is in great need of more information and understanding. If you are practitioner who deals with menopausal patients, I strongly suggest you read and understand what Dr collins has to say. If you are not a practitioner but would like a better understanding of menopause, this is a good read.

Finally, sense to the confusing passage of menopause. Why do some women hardly notice the change at all? Why does one do well on estrogen while another, natural progesterone only? Why do some women's discomforts resolve while others continue to baffle? Not only does Dr. Collins make all of this simple to understand, but he offers straight forward protocol for analyzing, understanding and prescribing for the whole range of individual differences of menopause. What a relief, to see light through the tunnel. The book is in my back pocket. The appointment is made. My Naturopath and I now have the tools to mend my menopausal way.

Brave new perspective...

I have read the books - all the good ones I thought; I've researched the treatments; I've talked (& talked...) to several physicians, to other women - nothing has even come close to this book. This makes sense! We are all so unique - biologically, psychologically, chemically; why would our passage through menopause not be unique as well? Of course it is!

Well written, logical & filled with simple yet revolutionary new alternatives to use immediately for the irritation, anxiety, memory-lapses, hot flashes, night sweats, you-name-it... that you're experiencing, the book gives you some control over what you're experiencing.

I knew I was doing something wrong (though I was trying almost everything!), but didn't know what. Now the pieces fit!

Beg, borrow or steal if you have to, but get a copy for your home library; you'll refer to it again & again.

While reading "What's Your Menopause Type?", one can feel the heart felt compassion of the author. His writing is down to earth, easy to understand, and the resource information is invaluable. This book enables you to take control of your own life. Dr. Collins has finally put to rest the old myth that menopause is the same for all women. I would suggest that every man read this book, especially to help them understand their loved ones. As well as having valuable information on nutrition, herbs and hormones, he gives the reader access to a web site that will enable them to find physicians and pharmacists that are commented to treating each menopausal woman. I know I will keep this book in my library as a valuable resource, and I would like to personally thank Dr. Collins for his sensitivity with respect to woman and menopause.

This is good attack on modern medicines use of drugs and how they could be avoided.. Since plants can't be patented like drugs so little research is done on thier powers.. But if you buy this book you'll be able to do quite a bit of research on herbs, vitamins, amino acids and power foods.. I could share things that aren't in this book that work but who knows I might want to sell a remedy myself someday..

The book can be sometimes confusing where the information is so thick it becomes confusing.. It doesn't have every rememdy in the world here but is without a doubt the best attempt to do so..

You can find maximium dossages for various vitamins in this book... It is well organized and has a little bit of everything.. If your suffering you might be able to do some deductive resoning to cure yourself of your ailment.. good luck..

THIS IS A JEWEL PEOPLE. I OWN ABOUT 25 BOOKS ON HERBS, VITAMINS, AND NATURAL HEALING. THIS BOOK IS BY FAR THE MOST USEFUL OUT OF MY ENTIRE LIBRARY. WHEN I NEED TO KNOW SOMETHING, I GRAB THIS BOOK FIRST, AND RARELY DO I NEED TO GO FURTHER TO ANOTHER BOOK.

THE AUTHOR WROTE THIS COMPENDIUM WITH "INFORMATION" IN MIND. IT ISN'T WELL WRITTEN. IT'S MORE LIKE A BRAIN DRAIN OF DATA ON JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING YOU CAN EVER WANT TO LOOK UP. THE GOOD THING IS THAT YOU'LL LEARN AMAZING THINGS THAT YOU WON'T FIND IN ANY OTHER BOOK IN EXISTENCE. THE BAD THING IS THAT SOMETIMES YOU MAY GET ANNOYED WITH THE SEARCH FOR SOMETHING. IT IS CLUTTERED AND AT TIMES LABORIOUS WHEN TRYING TO LOCATE SOMETHING.

I HOPE THE AUTHOR WILL INCLUDE BETTER HEADINGS AND BETTER ORGANIZATION OF MATERIAL UNDER EACH HEADING IN A NEWER EDITION...

BUY THIS BOOK.

The most valuable book you will ever own!

I have 3 words for you: BUY THIS BOOK!!

THis is the most informative, thorough, interesting book on natural health I have ever read!

If you hate to read, this book is probably not for you. It's also not for people who have trouble comprehending what they read. People who love to read, who have a intense interest in nutrition, natural health, science, or healing will absolutely adore this book. I guard mine with my life! Especially now that I see it is out of print. If I had the cash, I would buy another copy while I still can. The book is truly incredible! It contains a phenomenol amount of information. Very in-depth details, everything you need to know about specific vitamins, herbs, minerals, amino acids, etc. And also enlightening information regarding some unorthodox healing methods. In depth information about energy, electricity, auras, and so forth. It is absolutely amazing how much information this book contains. The format and organization is unique, and in some ways difficult to follow at first. BUt that's because it contains SO MUCH information! And the quality of the information it contains is worth taking the time to re-read it. The author did an incredible job with this book, and you can tell he put a great deal of time, effort, and research into it! It's worth it's weight in gold!! (And this is one heavy book! :)
