Essential nutrients have healing propertiesReview Date: 2007-09-22
by Abram Hoffer, PhD, MD, FRCP(C) with Harold Foster, PhD, 2007, CCNM Press, Toronto
When two such highly qualified professionals as Abram Hoffer, PhD, MD, FRCP(C) (biochemist, physician and psychiatrist-retired) and Harold Foster, PhD (medical geographer) explain how we can feel better and live longer by taking vitamin B-3, we would do well to consider their wise words. In this book, Dr. Hoffer and Harold Foster, PhD teach us why certain nutrients are so important to human health that deficiencies can cause serious health problems; some individuals require extra nutrients to the point that they depend on high levels to maintain good health and, as if that wasn't enough to remember, some nutrients have medicinal properties. After introducing the concepts of nutritional deficiencies and dependencies, this book focuses on the practical aspects of vital amine B-3, an essential nutrient which has three names, in its various forms - nicotinic acid, niacin, niacinamide. The authors explain how B-3 can help us to maintain good health. They survey 15 health problems which respond to vitamin supplements:
(1) pellagra (a nutritional deficiency which leads to psychosis but resolves taking niacin), (2) schizophrenia (which responds to niacin or niacinamide or no-flush niacin, but requires higher doses of vitamin B-3 along with ascorbic acid and other supplements), (3) pyroluria, (4) alcoholism, (5) anxiety, (6) cardiovascular,
(7) stroke, (8) senility (9) Huntington's, (10) Parkinson's and several others including cancer.
Abram Hoffer obtained his PhD in biochemistry before he became a physician and a psychiatrist. Over his long and distinguished career, he researched the healing properties of vital amines, trace minerals, amino acids, energy and enzyme cofactors, precursors and substrates - these biochemical names may seem complicated but, these molecules are nutrients. It turns out that human beings need the right mix of the right nutrients to maintain normal health. That makes certain nutrients essential. Day to day, most of us don't think about nutrition as we rush through our busy days, gulping down our food, the faster the better. Might our eating choices affect our health? Most doctors don't bother with nutrition; exceptionally, Abram Hoffer studied biochemical and nutritional problems which affect some patients to the point that they develop metabolic disorders. Most psychiatrists avoid the complications of biochemistry; Abram Hoffer connects essential nutrients to health and illness and teaches us, in layman's terms, that our bodies and our brains need optimum `fuels', the right amounts of the right molecules, to restore and maintain good health.
In the 1950s, Hoffer applied his PhD in biochemistry to research whether vitamins, B-3 and C, nicotinic acid and ascorbic acid, could help patients who suffered episodes of psychosis. Many of his acute schizophrenic patients recovered taking medicinal doses of niacin or niacinamide (a methyl acceptor) along with ascorbic acid (an antioxidant). Dr. Hoffer's regimens worked safely and effectively and he became fascinated by the healing properties of essential nutrients. His research continued, for over fifty years.
Dr. Hoffer networked with open-minded health professionals. Together they conceptualized, researched, and developed a complementary restorative dimension of healthcare. In 1962, Linus Pauling, PhD named it "orthomolecular" medicine. Dr. Hoffer explains, "The practice of orthomolecular medicine recognizes that diseases are due to a metabolic fault that is correctable in most patients by good nutrition, including the use of vitamins and mineral supplements." Unfortunately, few physicians studied Hoffer's research and few doctors offer orthomolecular care. Believing that many people could benefit if they learned about restorative care, Hoffer became an author and an educator. In his many books, articles and editorials, published over the past fifty years, Abram presented his findings to patients, families and health professionals. His latest book is a classic example of his style of painstaking research and clear reporting.
Co-author Harold Foster, PhD, a geography professor, applies his perspective to medical matters. Ordinarily, we expect a geographer to focus on the outdoors - landscapes, boundaries, features and maps. Professor Foster's books include What Really Causes Schizophrenia, What Really Causes AIDS and What Really Causes Alzheimer's. He considers the history of medical discoveries, identifies where diseases occur, suggests factors which can contribute to the frequency of an illness and maps new roads to healing.
For decades while researching and developing regimens for patients, Hoffer took a daily dose of niacin. He experienced the niacin flush with two brief side effects: 1. warmth and 2. redness. How many physicians self-test their treatments? Will you live as long as Abram Hoffer if you take an optimal dose of vitamins, including B-3, i.e. niacin, every day? If your doctor says that vitamin B-3 cannot possibly help you, remember that Dr. Hoffer wrote this book in his 90th year. During his outstanding career, while helping thousands of patients recover and live well, Abram Hoffer learned that niacin really can help people feel better and live longer. Few doctors have dedicated themselves as diligently as Abram Hoffer to helping mankind understand the health-maintaining and health-restoring qualities of essential nutrients.
Hoffer and Foster wrote this clear, concise, insightful, helpful and hopeful book about vitamin B-3 so the general public can easily learn why human beings need niacin to live well. If it turns out that we suffer from B-3 deficiencies or dependencies, we can ask health professionals to recommend B-3 supplements. The authors explain the research and provide the references. Consider their message: optimum doses of niacin, an essential nutrient, can help people feel better and live longer. We can all use this inspiring book to help ourselves and our families. If you want to feel better and live longer, you owe it to yourself and your family to read this book. Then you will understand about maintaining good health by eating a balanced diet and taking supplements of essential nutrients.

The Inside Out DietReview Date: 2008-05-19
Overall, a fantastic bookReview Date: 2007-07-29
Step 1 - During the first week, you avoid certain foods. Even though it's a detox diet, Wong explains that it's better to avoid a severe or overly restrictive detox diet because of the overload of fat-soluble toxins that are released which impact the liver. You eat vegetables, fruit, lean protein (chicken, turkey, egg whites, etc), certain starches (brown rice, sweet potatoes, etc) and can have a coffee a day if you want. You're not having dairy, wheat, or foods with gluten during this week.
Step 2 - In the second week, you introduce one of the seven forbidden foods/food groups back into your diet each day. The goal is to help you discover whether you have a food sensitivity that might be affecting your weight or making you bloated etc. After you've figured this out, you can now include all the foods you didn't react to. The book says to eat like this for another two weeks before moving on to the next step, but also says that many people opt to stay here until they've reached their desired weight.
Step 3 - This is the maintenance plan - I find that a realistic maintenance plan like this one (where nothing is off-limits) is the only thing that works in the long run.
To do this diet, it helps greatly if you have access to organic fruit, vegetables, chicken, and meat and a health food store. Some of the optional foods like honeybush tea and shirataki noodles may be difficult to track down. You also have to be willing to eat cruciferous vegetables (e.g broccoli, cauliflower, arugula) plus a lot of other veggies, whole grains, low-fat yogurt (if you can't eat yogurt or certain grains there are alternatives), and other health foods.
Meat and eggs aren't required on the diet but protein is. In case you're a vegetarian, there are vegetarian protein sources in the allowed foods lists. That said, most if not all of the daily meal plans and many of the recipes have either eggs, chicken, lean beef, or fish, so if you're a vegetarian, you'll have to spend time figuring out your meal plan.
If you don't cook for whatever reason, you may find it difficult to get all the required foods (fruit and veggies, etc) and avoid all the unwanted foods. But if you can at least make smoothies in the morning, have salads with grilled chicken for lunch, and make dinner at home, you should be able to make it work. Making a large batch of vegetable soup on the weekend with all the required vegetables and having them at lunch and/or dinner during the week might help.
There are daily menu plans and recipes at the back of the book. Diet book menu plans in general usually require making a different recipe each meal with no repetition - who has time for that? A couple of hours spent at the beginning trying to figure out a regular meal plan for you would probably work better.
Overall, it's a sensible diet and a refreshing alternative to all the uncomfortable fad diets and detoxes. A fantastic book!
It's Not About The Weight Loss, But Rather On Your HealthReview Date: 2008-01-06
That's where Dr. Cathy Wong's The Inside-Out Diet comes in. Instead of focusing on the weight loss (which will still happen, by the way!), this plan gets people to eat for the sake of their health instead by consuming a nutritional program that will allow your liver to function better than it ever has before. Yes, this is a detoxification diet, but it's so much more.
I especially enjoyed the step-by-step approach of this diet looking at every possibility for why you might not be losing weight, including food allergies and intolerances, stress, excessive insulin production, and more. It's as if Dr. Wong takes you by the hand to assure you that we WILL get to the bottom of your obesity problem and attack it from "the inside-out."
For fans of recipes, Dr. Wong includes 50 of her favorites in the back of the book. She earnestly believes in the slow, methodical approach to weight loss because it's about eating healthier first and foremost. If more people took on this philosophy of eating primarily for the sake of their health, then obesity rates would drop faster than they ever have before.

Mother Earth curesReview Date: 2001-08-22
The problem with this is- who knows which herbs, how to use them, and what effects they have. This book is a great beginning resource. Written by Dr. John McKenna, he explains various methods for healing or treating.
This book contains case by case studies and results. It is not difficult to believe that nature works better than synthetic, it has always been that way.
I recommend this book, and studying Native American and Asian natural healing methods. Please be responsible when choosing the herbs recommended in this book. If possible, grow your own(organically) and replant. Mother nature supplies the ingredients, but we must replenish so that everyone may enjoy the benefits.

Fighting infection the natural wayReview Date: 2003-12-10
In this updated and revised of his work, the author considers a variety of strains of infection that have developed resistance since the first edition of this book. The sections on homeopathic, nutritional and herbal remedies and cures for infection have been enlarged and brought up to date.
From this book, it is clear that it is still possible and even preferable to fight infection without the use of antibiotics. At the same time, McKenna acknowledges the value of antibiotics in many instances. This is a valuable guide to alternative ways of staying healthy, and provides a balanced look at health and the antibiotic question.
The book includes a bibliography and thorough index. Another great book that deals with this topic is Leon Chaitow's Antibiotic Crisis, Antibiotic Alternatives.

Well, it takes dedication and effort to put together these concoctions. and that may be a therapy in itself. To heal my weary mind i'd rather read a book.

Holistic TherapyReview Date: 2001-02-28
Jeremy Harwood presents the theory and practice of the 38 Bach flower remedies with a jargon-free approach. He takes each remedy and briefly describes the use to give emotional and physical relief. Each plant is displayed in color and adds so much to the understanding of how plants help us to heal.
"It is not the disease that is of importance, it is the patient, the way in which he or she is affected, which is our true guide to healing." Dr. Edward Bach
Flower remedies promote a positive outlook on life. Fear, uncertainty, lack of interest, loneliness, over-sensitivity, despair and anxiety have a negative affect.
A remedy for "fear" is called Mimulus. This can help people who are afraid of social contact and will help people confront their worries and anxieties. Mimulus is described in detail. To take any of the remedies, it is recommended that two drops of the tincture is to be used in a glass of water. You can then sip the water four times a day. This makes taking all the remedies very easy and you could make up a bottle in the morning and even take your remedy to work. There are no pills to swallow, which will give everyone a reason to be happy on its own.
I highly recommend this easy-to-use reference guide because it is extremely user friendly. This is a small enough book, that you can keep it in your first-aid kit or with your essential oils and other herbal remedies. There is a list of addresses and web sites in the back of the book along with a lovely index, which will help you to quickly locate a problem and solve it. A complete kit of the 38 remedies costs four hundred dollars or you can start to collect them as needed. Each bottle costs around nine dollars if you purchase them individually. A beautiful maple chest can also be purchased to keep the remedies organized. You might want to try the original Rescue Remedy which is the one product that you can take to cure all kinds of emotional stress.
