The best and most insightful book I've read on CFS, and I've read just about them all. It's also one of the few that left me with a feeling of hope! Dr. Poesnecker clearly and accurately describes the underlying dysfunction of the neuroendocrine system and its conseqences that make this illness so fustratingly difficult to recover from (and hard for your average doctor to understand). His explanation of both the physical as well as the psychological impact and symptoms of the illness are insightful -so much so at times it left me wondering whether he hadn't himself endured the lingering imprisonment and agony of CFS. I look forward to reading the updated edition of this excellent book with anticipation.

Not only have I read Dr. Poesnecker's book, I have been to his facility for treatment and been under his care, long-distance, for over a year. His book & approach have revolutionized my long-term search for relief from chronic fatigue and related "wierd symptoms". He articulates an acute understanding of the myriad symptoms involved... from debilitating fatigue to anxiety & other mental aberrations to just "feeling ill". He explains why those symptoms result from an exhausted adrenal system and helps the reader understand how to properly approach the problem. I took the thru-the-mail saliva test he discusses in his book which pinpointed what stage of adrenal dysfunction I was under. I then began over-the-phone treatment. Within two weeks of treatment with the thru-the-mail supplements he sent me I was significantly better. Since then I've been on a gradual ascent in my energy level and sense of well-being and am experiencing the "slow miracle" that he describes in his book. His angle has been on the mark for me, and I wish I had discovered it years sooner. Best Wishes.

But, that's not saying much. The clinical flowcharts are somewhat useful. But, like much of naturopathy this book is geared toward questionable diagnoses like food intolerances, intestinal disbyosis and toxic liver. But what more can one expect when the 3rd author, an instrutor at Bastyr College, has another book attributing almost all illness to dehydration!

This handbook is a shorter version of the textbook of Natural Medicine published a few years ago by the first two authors. The three present authors are all affiliated with the Bastyr University, Washington in the United States. This college of naturopathic medicine was established in 1978 by Les Griffith, Bill Mitchell and Joe Pizzorno in the name of their teacher John Bastyr. He was one of the pioneers of natural medicine, who had grown up with a father pharmacist and a mother interested in healthy living in the beginning of the 1900 in Seattle.
The Bastyr University today offers the student acupuncture and oriental medicine, applied behavioral science, exercise science and wellness, nerbal sciences, nutrition, psychology with a health concentration, spirituality, health and medicine. Joe Pizzorno, a former midwife, co-founder and past president of the University has been instrumental in bringing scientific methods to natural medicine and setting educational standards for teaching in this field.
This book has 74 chapters or entries on 74 common diseases from Acne to viral pharyngitis and a useful index. Each entry is arranged in a reader friendly way with therapeutic flow charts to help in the decision making process. You will find information on diet, supplements and natural medicine treatments and when needed also traditional medicine options.
The book can be recommended to the therapist interested in learning about natural medicine options in various diseases and for the physician interested in using natural medicine in addition or sometimes instead of traditional drugs...

I was absolutely delighted to read Dr. Kondrot's book Healing the Eye the Natural Way. I am a Family Physician, a Homeopathic Doctor, and I have a family history of macular degeneration. This book helps me on all three of those levels. This book presents a sensible and rational, multi-disciplinary, holistic approach to eye health and particularly to macular degenaration. We need more information like that found in this book.

Given that it is estimated that 13 million Americans are to suffer from Age-Related Macular Degeneration, it is time that someone from the field of medicine step forward into the realm of natural medicine and give us hope. In this book, Dr. Kondrot introduces an alternative approach to help heal macular degeneration at a time that conventional medicine does not have much to offer patients with this diagnosis. Dr. Kondrot has introduced his approach in three main parts in the book. In the first section he teaches the value of a healthy diet, balanced exercise, and stress management. In the 2nd section, he recommends additional nutritional and eye specific herbal supplements to support circulatory and nervous system. And finally in the 3rd section, three revolutionary techniques are introduced: classical homeopathy, chelation therapy and micro-current stimulation. Most of us have herad of chelation therapy in relation to treating heavy metal toxicity or cardiovascular disorders. The idea of chelation therapy as a treatment for macular degeneration will strike most readers as quite novel. Likewise, many will not have heard of Microcurrent Stimulation, an adaption of TENS unit used for pain management, to stimulate eye circulation. In classical homeopathy, a correct constitutional remedy is useful in healing the person as a whole and can bring miraculous outcome when combined with the rest of the mentioned therapies. Patient testimonials are especially compelling. Readers will find this book easy to read because of its' simple language, slightly oversized font and roomy page layout. In addition the upbeat, and friendly tone provides encouragement and support for the readers in the healing process. Resources are helpful to acquire the mentioned products. It is wonderful to know that the material in this book is compiled from years of work and dedication of a respected specialist who has dared to go the distance in this field.

In Healing The Eye The Natural Way: Alternative Medicine And Macular Degeneration, homeopath and board certified ophthalmologist Dr. Edward Kondrot offers readers a twelve-step guide to improving their vision through vitamin and nutritional therapy, homeopathy, micro-current stimulation, and chelation therapy. Healing The Eye The Natural Way is a unique and invaluable contribution to the growing library of alternative medicine in general, and vision related medical issues in particular.

I purchased this book for a family member who is in the early stages of glaucoma, hoping that holistic approaches might reduce the probability of surgery later on. While the book does provide some useful information regarding the importance of selenium, chromium and lutein in the maintenance of eye health, its extremely general information on most topics is almost useless. For example, Kondrot states that it is important to minimize stress and avoid processed foods, both factors in decreasing the body's retention of toxic compounds. However, he also seems to advocate avoidance of large quantities of fluids. This is contrary to his own hypothesis that it is important to clear the body of toxins, and ignores the fact that diabetics(who are a large proportion of his target audience)cannot safely do this for an extended period of time! On the subject of stress relief, his advice is also very general, although not dangerous in its execution. In short, the only truly useful information provided in the book comes in the area of dietary adjustment and the use of mineral supplements. Note: This book would probably be much more useful to individuals with eye disorders who are not afflicted with diabetes.

You don't have to give yourself to the medical profession for treatments that may make you worse. This author has outlined a strategy for self directed recovery from a cancer that is only sometimes successfully treated by surgery or radiation. This book is a good source of hope men whose cancer is not appropriate for traditional medical approaches or who want to learn about their alternatives.

Easy read, casual style, poorly edited. If your doctor is recommending the KNIFE for your prostate problem: read this book FIRST! If you are willing to buck the system to save "the boys", this book may give you the motivation and direction to do so. Eric does a bit too much gazing into his own belly button, but it is amusing and may help you to see in yourself some of the weaknesses that have contributed to your problems and some of the strengths that will help you overcome them. This book is probably NOT a read for most women. If you are interested primarily in the PEPOLE personality profile system, I would suggest trying to get a copy of "The Velvet Glove" even though it is out of print.

James Scheer has written and co-authored many excellent health books, and has a long and solid reputation in the nutrition industry. This book pays its respects to the many people who have been trying to make Chia seed a viable crop and educate others on its incredible health benefits. Although a bit simple in its approach, it is an up-to-date resource for those just learning about the magic of the chia seed and its future potential for changing the health of millions. Read it, apply it, and pass it on!

Well, "they" say that the ancients knew best! In the case of chia, that appears to be true. One thing that chia seeds delivers, is boron, which helps transfer calcium to the bones. The author of the Magic of Chia does an excellent job of explaining the historical significance of chia seed, along with its nutritional value. You need to read this one, and start eating it, as I do!

this book is talking about natural health, and it shows the diseases of many kinds in a very simple and short explanation, and short strategy that take place on a 1-2 pages. in the case of food healing secretes it is o.k. but when we discus diseases and strategy we should try to be more informative even though we need to be practical rather then just explainable.that is the reason why i said that it is more fulfiling in one part of it comparing to the otherone. in short it is a good book, and i do recommand it with 3 stars.

I was a patient of Shyam's for nearly 12 years up to his death. His remedies might seem bizarre but they work if followed religiously. He cured a bacterial infection I had that modern medicine had failed to cure; he made me believe that you are what you eat and if you eat right it will do you good! He aslo taught me how to relieve nerve pain without drugs. His death was a sad loss to myself and to the many thousands of others who had the benefit of knowing him and being treated by him.

Sound knowledge, immature organisation
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Review Date: 2008-06-28
This book, comprising 7 Chapters, is intended (as explicitly stated by the author) for nonscientists, and it indeed offers sound basic knowledge due to the author's scientific background. It, however, still remains immature in organisation and matter. Main reasons are the following.
The first three Chapters, being an INTRODUCTION to basic Chemistry, are too extended. Especially Chapter 3 is unnecessarily heavy (41 full pages) with details a nonscientist would exactly omit (electrons, orbitals etc), and featured with the Periodic Table of Elements, which is the ONLY Table in the book. So, Chapter 3 could be eliminated, and its last 10-12 pages added to Chapter 2.
Then comes Chapter 4, the gravitation centre of the book, describing the primary and secondary plant substances (metabolites) used as medicines, bearing instead the pompous title "A Structural Lexicon of Medicinally Important Chemical Families Found in Plants", and comprising 35 full pages. Short, and without any table showing (in example) which plants possess which active substances. Another shortage at this point is the entire lack of the metabolic pathways leading to these substances in the living plant.
Chapter 5 exhibits inappropriate organisation, as the Isolation and Identification of plant substances constitute a unity, but their antioxidant action (which is the only action described) does not fit here, it rather should be added to the following Chapter 6 which deals with the actions, however also in short.
And finally, Chapter 7 presents Case Studies, but only with two plants, Ayahuasca (a plant mixture) and Ginkgo, along with plants affecting the cell cycle (in cancer). One would expect here a more systematic presentation of plants for the various systems (nervous, peptic, etc) and main diseases (cancer, arthritis, etc), along with an elaborate Table closing the book, with selected plants, their active substances, actions, and diseases cured.
Let's add that the 22 plant drawings scattered in the book (mostly full-paged) are colorless, unlively, and with faint background.
All in all, the book is in the way to become mature, but is not yet. Still, it is recommended to the intended audience, because of the knowledgable and sound tongue of the author, and because such books are rare.

Bryan A Hanson, PhD, hits a homerun with this book. This is one of the most organized books on medicinal plants you will ever find to date. It actually rivals some of the texts on pharmacognosy currently in use today. Sprinkling in inorganic, organic, and medicinal chemistry, he finds methods of explaining modern chemical concepts which can be easily grasped with little effort. The index is an excellent listing of Lewis structures through subjects such as, secondary metalbolism. On whatever level you want to explore and/or enrich your understanding of some quite complex biochemical subjects, Dr. Hanson has it. At first, I thought the text might be a little brief to cover all that he attempts. However, I found that was an error on my part, as he is quite good at bridging subjects and explaining concepts for all those interested in these topics. He covers subjects that can be hard to find in many modern textbooks, especially those used in colleges around the country. The end book glossary is an excellent idea and very complete. However, one of my favorite subjects he entertains is that of chapter 5 where he explains topics such as lipid and ROS-damaged membranes. Few chemist-authors will step up and explain in detail subjects such as these. He does so quite well. Any true medicinal chemist or layman, if given a chance to peruse a copy, will find this a truly knowledgeable book and would have to purchase it. It is that well written. I'm not in the habit of giving scores to books and/or articles, but this is a 10+ on my list for anyone interested in biochem or medicinal chemistry. The research possiblities alone would make this a "must have" for any personal library. Great book by a great author; hope to see more of his work. guyairey CBP studies

The weighty price tag of Understanding Medicinal Plants: Their Chemistry And Therapeutic Action may limit acquisition to college-level specialty collections, but any holding with a solid emphasis on medicine will want this: undergrads in pharmacy, medical students, and more will find in-depth details on the chemistry, biology, plant physiology and pharmacology of medicinal plants, making it an important reference for any chemistry course or study of healing herbs.

A good balance of the folklore of medicinal plants and the chemicals (natural drugs) that make them so useful in traditional and modern herbal medicine.

Book was okay-not as much info as I thought I was going to receive. Was more a pamphlet than a book.

This is a book for the layman because the text is understandable and the information is useful. It doesn't go into depth but does provide a good overview about preventing diabetes. Research indicates that a person can't reverse diabetes but he/she can take preventive steps to change the course toward diabetes or lessen the effects once diabetes has developed.

Since I have read all of the other books by Melissa Diane Smith I decided that I should add this to my collection.
I found the guide to be exceptionally well done and user friendly. Every person with Diabetes and/or obesity, hypertension or other illness that may pose increased health risks should buy and read this guide.
I have been in the health care field for many years and I have read numerous articles and books and I have found this guide to be one of the best examples of clear-cut, concise information that a patient could readily absorb and gain valuable insight to improve their overall well being.
Thank you Melissa for yet another fine piece of educational material!

This is a great book for someone wanting to learn about diabetes. I was recently diagnosed with Type II Diabetes and this book help take the anxiety from the shocking news and replaced it with facts and many "how to's" and options to improve the situation. If you want to help a loved one who has diabetes - this would be a great guide to assist you. A must read.

This is a great quick reference book for alternatives to traditional medicine. There is more research required by the reader for treatments (dosages are not included always) but it's definately a great starting point. I'm not following the suggestions to the letter, but the guidance it provides is very beneficial and points me in the right direction for further research.

When I was diagnosed with diabetes several years ago, I read Dr. Trattlers book and it simply changed my life. My blood sugars plummmeted downwards and I lost 80 lbs. in the process. It has since become my health bible and I recommend it to everyone! The food and nutritional information is invaluable and his analysis of diseases ,with their causes and symptoms is unsurpassed. The natural alternatives are not only life-changing but in my opinion-life-saving.I have referred to and reread this book over and over again through the years and I thank Dr. Trattler for his "gift" of health to me.
A good resource for behavior, supplements and botanicals.

In my practice as a complimentary medicine provider, I use this book as a resource. Its review of systems and disorders preceeds any suggestions for natural healing. Often healthy behaviors are highlighted as treatment, followed by suggestions for supplements and botanicals. His extensive medical background and discription of disease processes helps pinpoint a diagnosis and treatment process. I have used this book extensively for ten years.

As a sufferer of adrenal fatigue, he probably had the best understanding of what happens and how you feel of any book I have read. Heartily recommend this book.
