This is a tall book about 12.5 inches (32 cm tall and 24 cm wide) and contains excellent quality presentations of the botanical prints of the collector Clutius [artist(s)unknown]. So you see on each white page an aged parchment that contains the botanical watercolor. The parchments are set on each page with about a one-inch surrounding border of the white background page. All the parchments are very old so their edges are a bit uneven here and there indicating their age and their true paper-making origin. No machine churned out perfect sheets back then. The watercolors themselves are absolutely exquisite and their skilled presentation by the author makes you feel like you are actually paging through the actual collection. She chose 142 watercolors from the collection of 1,800. The artist(s) may be unknown but their skill would have guaranteed them widespread fame today if they had autographed their works. I am a modest collector of botanical books and I just feel so peaceful and content paging through them. This is my favorite book. Even at Amazon's $45 price tag, which I did not pay, I consider this book worth it. Barely, but still worth it! And I am a real skinflint so I don't say this lightly! If you love botanical books, you will treasure this one.

Thomas' book IS a Complete Book of Natural Pain Relief! It's well-organized, includes gorgeous color photographs and helpful charts and most importantly, is succinctly written. It has TWO MAIN SECTIONS, "THE AILMENTS" and "THE THERAPIES".
"THE AILMENTS" includes fourteen sections in a very helpful 'At A Glance' chart of them all listing the site/type of pain, the ailment, and page number for quick reference; and each ailment is discussed in appropriate detail. Some ailments have only a paragraph while other more serious ailments like Depression, have longer sections including remedies of: visualization, meditation, self-hypnosis, biofeedback, flower remedies, exercise, massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, creative arts, homeopathy, healing, nutritional and dietary therapy, herbal medicine, movement therapies, light and color therapies, and hydrotherapy.
"THE THERAPIES" includes PHYSICAL THERAPIES: Naturopathy, Nutritional therapy, Electronic devices, Herbal medicine, Massage and Aromatherapy; MOVEMENT THERAPIES: Yoga, Tai Chi and Alexander Technique; PSYCHOLOGICAL THERAPIES: Self-hypnosis, Relaxation and Creative arts therapies; SUBTLE ENERGY THERAPIES: Acupressure, Reflexology, Homeopathy, Healing (including a favorite of mine, Reiki,) and Flower remedies; and lastly, OTHER EFFECTIVE THERAPIES: Acupuncture, Manipulation, Hypnotherapy and Counseling and psychotherapy.
Thomas used a consultant, Peter Albright, M.D. in the writing of this book and Thomas' book is very encouraging for one to realize that WE can have a direct role in OUR health and healing and come to understand we don't have to "pop a pill" for every little ache. In my personal experience, I've learned superior nutrition, regular exercise (including a good balance and variety), maintaining an optimistic outlook and keeping in balance my mind, body and spirit help me get healthier day by day! You can do the same. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This well researched guide presents fifty popular herbs used for medicinal purposes. The herbs are profiled in an A-Z format (from alfafa to willow) and each entry presents a thumbnail sketch which covers common uses, active constituents, adverse effects, cautions and contraindications, drug interactions, and doses. This is followed by more in depth information covering the description, parts of the plant used, traditional use and current medicinal use and a lengthy analysis of the scientific research that has been conducted on the particular herb. This latter section is referenced and the source materials can be found in the back of the book. The authors, who are licensed pharmacists, are also objective in their statements so the reader is sometimes provided with conflicting research and can make informed decisions. A handy list located in the front of the book, "Medicinal Herbs for Health Conditions" allows the reader to see in a glance which herbs can be used for particular ailments. This is an excellent reference source for healthcare professionals. The casual user will also find much useful information here although the scientific research sections may be a tad too scholarly.

This is one of the most helpful books I own. It has helped me in treating myself and my cats. You are able to look up a sympton, problem or disease and find herbs, homeopathic remedies, foods, etc. that are used to treat the problem. There is also a comprehensive section on individual herbs and salts. It is the easiest book to navigate and I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in natural health care.

As owner of a health food & supplement company in the UK, I was very surprised to find a book such as this available.
The book is very simple to follow and does the main job of EDUCATING people that there are alternatives to DRUGS.
We sell Wild Yam Cream here, but the main problem is getting women to understand how it works and why it is best to try this natural remedy first - not last!
I enjoyed the humour in the book and could sympathise with many of the situations the author found herself in.
I'm very pleased to give this book my backing. It ought to be a 'must' for EVERY woman on the western world.
Should anyone in the UK wish to try Wild Yam Cream, they can email me here at SunLHealth@AOL.Com. Or write to: Sunlife Health, 84 Scott Drive, WICKFORD SS12 9RU.
Many thanks,
Paula Pont

With this brief introduction complete, the author presents each of the 5 elements in chapter long essays. Each chapter describes the elemental 'personality', signs of balance or lack of same, then related organs and meridians. He concludes with some exercises for strengthening the organs nurturing transformations related to that element. There are some black and white photos of a model demonstrating exercise positions.
He concludes with a brief discussion of the 4 linkage cycles:
1. Mother-nurtures-child: Wood-Fire-Earth-Metal-Water
2. Grandmother-guides-child: Wood-Earth-Water-Fire-Metal
3. Rebellious-child-overwhelms-grandmother: Metal-Fire-Water-Earth-Wood
4. Mother-killing-child: Water-Metal-Earth-Fire-Wood
(I've paraphrased for the cycle names)
Five-element theory can be a very complex subject. This book does a good job of making it understandable to the western reader.
