One of the problems in the natural medicines industry is the lack of peer reviewed, clinically proven information. The book is an excellent reference for anyone working in the natural medicines field. We find it especially useful in cutting down research time.

Scientific, Fact-Filled Alternative Medicine Handbook
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-20
This is one large book (870 pages!), filled with massive amounts of information regarding vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and other nutrients, and their effect on various diseases. Keep in mind this is a reference guide, primarily for clinicians, so it is not a book one would read through cover-to-cover.

The first section consists of nutrients, listed in alphabetical order. After each nutrient Null lists different diseases that a particular nutrient treats, backed by summaries of various scientific studies. He also provides the references, so one can easily look up the studies for him or herself. The studies come directly from scientific journals. For instance, looking under Zinc, we find that Zinc is beneficial for acne, and Zinc Sulfate and Vitamin A "significantly reduced" the number of papules, pustules, and infiltrates within 4 weeks. This is from a 1977 study found in "Arch Dermatol," i.e. the "Archives of Dermatology" journal.

The next four sections are: Herbal Superstars (well-known herbs), Additional Herbs, Therapeutic Amino Acids, and Essential Amino Acids. These are laid out just like the first section.

The next section consists of various fruits and vegetables and their phytochemical content. For instance, cabbage has over three pages worth of chemicals listed, from 1-cyano-2,3-epithiopropane to Zirconium (at anywhere from 1.4 to 203 ppm). Then Null lists each phytochemical alphabetically referenced to its therapeutic properties. Then he lists different herbal properties (such as "antiviral") followed by herbs that fall under that category.

Appendix A lists anti-aging nutrients (listed in the same manner as section one). Appendix B consists of recommended dosages of various nutrients and herbs. Finally appendix C consists of studies showing the potential misuse of supplements, and what overdoses might look like.

Overall, this book will be useful primarily to the clinician, but others may be interested as well. I am not a clinician, but interested in alternative medicine and the science behind it. No other health book has satisfied my interest as well as this book. My only complaint is that Null sometimes overlooks negative studies, but appendix C does remedy this to some degree.

Kinda like a PDR for the top 50 herbs but better.
Since it is only 50 and does not include homeopathic remedies it is not
the perfect , 'bible' alternative book but it is very much worth the price and worth owning, especially for novices. It is good for anyone as it does give side effects, interactions etc.etc.
Along with this you need Prescriptions for Natural Cures by Balch and you will be quite pleased with all the helpful info you have at your fingertips.
I really do use both frequently, and wouldn't want to be w/out either.

Excellent resource for consumers and professionals

This well researched guide presents fifty popular herbs used for medicinal purposes. The herbs are profiled in an A-Z format (from alfafa to willow) and each entry presents a thumbnail sketch which covers common uses, active constituents, adverse effects, cautions and contraindications, drug interactions, and doses. This is followed by more in depth information covering the description, parts of the plant used, traditional use and current medicinal use and a lengthy analysis of the scientific research that has been conducted on the particular herb. This latter section is referenced and the source materials can be found in the back of the book. The authors, who are licensed pharmacists, are also objective in their statements so the reader is sometimes provided with conflicting research and can make informed decisions. A handy list located in the front of the book, "Medicinal Herbs for Health Conditions" allows the reader to see in a glance which herbs can be used for particular ailments. This is an excellent reference source for healthcare professionals. The casual user will also find much useful information here although the scientific research sections may be a tad too scholarly.

A surprisingly thorough book of methods to stop smoking

I'm a nurse and I am embarrassed to say that I was a smoker. I was a little taken aback at first by the size of this book but relaxed and got into it because of the author's down-to-earth language. If there is any way to quit smoking that's not in this book, I would be very surprised! Dr. Blumgren offers every conceivable method of quitting tobacco--acupuncture, hypnosis, herbal products etc. (and which ones you should avoid) and backs it up with scientific studies that show you in black and white what really works and why it works. I was smoking two packs a day before. I tried two methods together and stopped smoking after 13 days. That was two months ago. No cravings and very easy! Thank you, Dr. Blumgren!

I bought this book at a book signing, at the suggestion of a smoker friend who also quit smoking by using a combination of natural rememdies. I almost still can't believe how easy it was, and there was no withdrawal! Dr. Blomgren's book is exceptionally thorough in all the different natural methods a smoker has at his or her disposal and it was generally very easy to read and follow. What was seems especially important was to make some small, strategic shifts in diet in order to create the conditions for the body to eliminate nicotine extremely slowly and avoid withdrawal symptoms. Before this, I had tried drugs and but they weren't much better than the smoking. There are some sections that are pretty technical but the book was written for clinical people as well as the general population (and you can skip over whatever doesn't apply to your own situation). I was impressed with how well researched the book was and Dr. Blomgren's ability to make difficult concepts very easy to understand. I look forward to his next book which presents the ideas of using naturopathic methods, but for children! This book is highly recommended to all smokers!!!

This book provides a very clear and consise explanaition of why we get sick and what we can to prevent it. It is very easy to understand, and there is very little medical jargon. It is especially helpful for those who have been sick for some time and have been unable to determine a cause or find a treatment. The solutions offered in this book are very simple and require a shift towards natural, raw foods. The basic premise is that we all eat too much processed food and end up sick as a result. Aside from food, there are other elements, such as environment, heredity, exposure to toxins, and stress. This is a great read for anyone looking to improve their overall health and sense of well-being.

Finally a book that explains how supplements work. Very easy to read, this book explains in detail how creatine works and how it should be used. There is more truthful supplementation information in this book than I have found in muscle magizines in the past three years. Anyone who wants to try supplements needs to read this book first to get an edge on companies who sell low grade products.

This book is a finely cut jewel in the world of menopause literature. Not only does it delve deeply into all the facets of menopause; physical, emotional and in terms of each individuals evolution to a new and potentially better phase of life, but it does so in a way that is so positive and inspirational that I find myself refering to it simply to remind myself that life is good and that even difficult experiances can be a special gift from God to learn and grow from. Don't get me wrong. The facts are clearly outlined, the alternative therapies researched throughly and explained in terms that any layman can understand. This book will gently guide you through all the ins and outs, ups and downs, of menopause in a throughly practical way. But it also goes a step beyond that, making this book a very special addition to the library of anyone going through menopause, or for someone that knows they will someday and would like to be prepared. I have also read 'Herbs of Grace', by the same author and would recommend that this also be read and cherished by anyone interested in Natural Medicine and all that it has to offer.

As a holistic practitioner, I find women vastly misunderstand the nature of menopause, thinking it just a negative physical cycle to medicate and suppress and be done with. Farida Sharan shows us, from her vast experience as a naturopathic doctor and healer, that we can deeply understand and embrace this time as part of our growth, and move through it with comfort, clarity and wisdom. Along with valuable information on natural physical healing, this book takes us on a much needed journey into the emotional and spiritual forces at work during menopause, and thus into a greater level of emotional and spiritual maturity possible for all women. This is a must read for women, even those who are years away from this important transition in life.

The book is written so anyone can understand and use the information on a daily basis. It provides valuable information on prevention, healing yourself, and has helpful ideas. The pictures are clear and the directions are very easy to follow step by step. You can learn the important pressure points quickly.
I have used the tehniques to travel 22 hours on a plane and did not get air sick, swollen limbs, or suffer from jet lag just from using a few pressure points and following the helpful hints.
The herbal and aroma therapy is also very helpful for relaxation and improving health. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

What Kathy Duerr provides in Doctor Mom's Quick Reference Guide To Natural Healthcare At Home is tried and true, doctor-endorsed, and "parent friendly" information on natural, commonplace, effective, and safe remedies for treating minor illnesses without having to resort to pharmaceutical drugs, thereby avoiding antibiotic and chemical compound side-affects. Duerr address such parental questions as to whether a child is really hyperactive, the safety and effectiveness of immunizations, what should go into a family medicine cabinet; how to get a child to sleep, baby colic, childhood fevers, cough and soar throat treatments, and the best way to deal with minor cuts and scrapes. Doctor Mom's Quick Reference Guide To Natural Healthcare At Home is highly recommended reading for anyone concerned with alternative health care issues, naturopathy, children's health, and effective parenting.

I wish I had found a book like this when my kids were young, I know I would have had the courage to run to the doctor less often and relied more on my medicine chest. My daughter has been very worried about giving her children so many antibiotics, every time they have an earache or a sore throat, it seems to be more drugs. At last here is someone here who talks sense, and gives us advice on how to treat every day ailments without resorting to strong drugs and possible side effects. Kathy Duerr believes in foot baths, and massaging feet with oils and herbs, and gives advice on what to keep in your medicine cupboard. My daughter, who has three little ones, is over the moon about this book, and can't recommend it highly enough to all parents of young children.

I have used Dr. Ingrams products for 2 years now and I still have my liver, unlike "DRUGS" that have been know to cause death in some cases and other complications. Just look at your television and watch the "drug" commercials and listen to the side effects.
Anyone who says that Dr. Ingrams products are not working for them then they must be doing something wrong.

I had a serious toe nail infection went to a drug store and the druggist said i would need a doctors note to get a product called lamisil a drug that she said would destroy my liver if i were to use it. She then whispered to me to go to a health food store and see what they have. I did and now no toenail fungus. Using the oil of oregano and oragamax.

It works and works well.

Everyone with diabetes should read this!

Earth Cures is a comprehensive one-of-a-kind book on the curative properties of natural clay found in the earth. It covers every aspect of the human body as to specific organs and diseases which clay can be used to cleanse and purify, treat, heal and improve. One can begin reading at any section of the book and return to the book time and time again, and learn something new.The author is comprehensive and has many recipes which include use of herbs for clay poultices and other methods of applying and ingesting via teas, etc. for treatments. The language is written in plain english without embellishments so anyone can understand it.I would recommend this alternative health therapy for anyone who suffers from disease, chronic health conditions, short-term problems like acne pimples and rashes.I have researched numerous alternative health techniques and have found the use of natural clay to be the finest an simplest method there is available today.I recommend the use of Pascalite powdered sterlized clay for topical as well as internal use. Their website is Pascalite.comI have tried various types of clay like bentonite and other green clays, but they are impure and too harsh and not recommended for internal use.Pascalite is a superior product from the mountains of Wyoming an has helped many people. This book is an excellent resource guide and may be passed down from one generation to the next, as the information is so valuable. The book makes no miracle claims, it only suggests this alternative health technique and various uses as possible curative and therapeutic ways of improving one's health. The book is written in a positive, upbeat manner in easy-to-read print with large pages and some illustrations. You get your money's worth as it is a large book and not something you can read in one or even 3 days.I only promote this book and the use of clay for healing because it is the only therapeutic alternative health technique I have found to be 100% valid, and delivers what you e to receive.Give healing with clay a try and you will not be dissapointed!
