As soon as I started reading this book I was hooked! It provides the reader with a huge amount of health information in a language that anyone can understand.

Each topic is covered entirely and it doesn't leave the reader wondering what to do next. It provides direction.

Too much info to soak up with one reading though. You won't be able to keep yourself from wanting to continually refer back to it. I know I refer to my copy everyday and use it for motivation as well as reference.

After reading this book you can't resist the urge to share with others what you have learned as it touches on topics that affects everyone.

I have been to many Doctors and Specialists, and in hind-sight I feel I had an operation that wasn't necessary. My problem still existed afterwards. It wasn't until I started to put the theories behind this book into practice that my problem cleared up.

If you know deep down inside that something is wrong with your health but modern medicine hasn't helped, purchase this book. You have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain.

An incredible book!

This is one of the best books I have come across in years! I am a Certified Nutrition Consultant and working towards a Dr. of Naturopathy degree. Although parts of this book is a bit technical to the casual reader, it has pulls together so many facets of information that you really need to have in order to make wise choices concerning your health. Nutrition plays a key role in that and Ron addresses this incredibly well. I would highly recommend it for those of you who are dissastisfied with the answers you are getting from your doctor and want to take back control of your health care in a responsible way.

Wow - its like condensed orange juice! Clearly explains the how, what, why of healing. The chapter and chart on Price versus Value of supplements was the clearest and easiest explanation in a few short pages, that I've ever read. The doctors and pharmacists involved in writing it, deserve applause - first time I got the whole picture, along with clear and easy to understand information about everything from herbs to vitamins, flower remedies and everything in between. Dr. Pettles one page description on his natural menopausal hormone replecment therapy and natural choices versus the drug approach, made getting the book worth every cent! I copied the page for a friend, who ended up getting the book and showing it to her doctor. She said it was so simple and clear, her doctor stopped trying to push the drugs and gave her a prescription for Dr Pettles natural hormone replacement therapy - on top of that its working for her. Not since I read Mindells Vitamin Bible, have I read such a clear, information packed book! A must have for anyone interested in natural remedies and supplements - fanstastic value for the money. Incidently, I am NOT related to the authors.

This is a testimonial for Barbara G. to write in to Amazon.com about the book Allergy Relief that she read and praised (spontaneously).

I wish people would buy Allergy Relief. It is so clear and simple to understand and there's so much in it that you can do yourself. Besides being good for my allergies, it says many important things about how to live well. I want to be healthy and live a long time and feel lucky that i found this book to help me.

I don't have any allergies but my brother has. I got this book and before giving it to him I read it. It explains what allergy is, what causes it and of course how to deal with it. If you suffer from allergies, i believe this is the book for you to cure them naturally. My brother (who is also against any form of medication) is already doing MUCH MUCH better after following the instructions in this book; improve his immune system, make the environment around him better and understand what allergy is. Simple steps you can take will lead to better living without much effort really. The book is simply written, easy to understand, which I find to be very important. Some books are heavy and boring because there are authors who think that they talk to other doctors and not to simple people who did not study medicine (Sorry for that). Allergy problem? I don't think you will find a better book on the subject than this.

Great Resource for Alternative Health Care

This book provides an excellent guide for those who want alternative care. It includes information on herbs, acupuncture, mind-body work, food supplements and other alternatives. Written by a physician and based on the ratings of a panel of health care providers it covers a wide range of expertise. I was especially interested in the section on back pain that I had recently experienced. True to my experience the traditional medical and physical therapy mentioned was not effective but the alternatives were. This book can save the consumer time from experimenting and lets them go straight to the best treatment available. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent guide to choosing an alternative health care option. It marries the option with the ailments so readers can see what options work best with their specific concern. The cost of treatment is invaluable when making a choice and for comparison when talking with providers. This one is a keeper for your personal bookshelf!

All that Dr. Jarvis wrote as to what the outcome would be if an individual would follow the stated regime of vinegar, honey, and kelp I can personally attest to. The excruciating joint and muscle pain, the fatigue and chronic upper respiratory infections that were described where written as if he knew me as a patient. Having suffered the paralysis that he described on page 29 in the soft covered edition I knew that he knew and understood in detail exactly what he was writing about. This is a 'must read' for everyone who wants to get well and stay well. For those who exercise and eat right and are well this book should be read for further understanding as to how the body is manufacturing acids, utilizing acids and eliminating acids to keep them that way. This book should be brought to the forefront and promoted as a 'must have' book for every household.

40 years of daily mugraines Cured....Miracle?

Review Date: 1998-03-03
In Dec. '97 and Jan. '98 My wife (native Costa Rican, Now US citizen) and I spent the holidays in Costa Rica. I had already read "Folk Medicine" by D.C. Jarvis and while we were visiting one of my wife's friends I noticed our hostess (the wife) seemed in pain. Upon querying her she said she only had one of her daily migraines which she has suffered most of her life. The migraines began when she was around 12 years and she rarely went even one day since without them. No doctors had done anything for her. She "lived" on Ibuprofen, 1000mgs 2/3 times a day. She was 52 Y.O. I mentioned the Folk Medicine book and 2 tsp vinegar with 2 tsp honey in a full glass of water. I told her it was worth a try, but (fearing it may take a while to take effect) I told her to try it faithfully for at least a week before abandoning it. I returned next day (1/2 block away) to find her bright and smiling giving me a big hug! NO MIGRAINE!! This was surprising enough, but I was skeptical...placebo?....To be brief, she ran out of vinegar at 25 days, and thought she was cured...no mugraines, no pain killers. After 4 days with no mixture she had her first migraine again, and we quickly got her some more vinegar. Immediately, on re-starting the vinegar/honey drink, no migraines. When we left to return to USA she was on her 45th day without migraines except for the day mentioned. She now drinks 2 glasses a day and so far, NO MIGRAINES!! I of course felt delighted to have been able to help her this way. She had the real thing with flashing lights, sounds, grinding pain. She really looks like a different, bright, person. Any one wishing to verify this I can give her name and address in C.R. Her daughter is married and lives here in the USA near us. Dan Manning

...as I said in my June 2003 review for 'Carlton Frederick's New Low Blood Sugar and You,' anything Carlton does is a must-have.

The only areas he falls short in, are those of the psychology of health and healing. Sometimes the compant we keep, the people we know are wrong for us, and are helping to keep us ill. Lifestyle is a factor. Much modern ill-health stems from stress, as much as it does from bad eating, heredity, and other factors. Works on psychosomatic medicine may be useful for some, also. Even the realm of so-called spiritual healing may have much to offer.

I refer the interested, who are wisely trying to 'cover the ground, and leave no stone unturned,' to consult Joel Goldsmith's classic, 'Art of Spiritual Healing,' and Louise L. Hays' 'Heal Your Body,' for some other useful points of view. These may prove helpful in the search for health, in spite of some people's opinions that they are 'nut books.'

Of course, any books on relaxation and stress reduction may also prove useful. One other very useful, recent source is Thomas Cleary's excellent 'Taoist Meditation.' Don't be put off by the ancient oriental religion angle of this title. It is NOT just for fashionable, trendy New Age types, or what-not. You will find this volume quite useful with regards to relaxation and health, just by reading it. You don't have to be a Taoist or any kind of meditator to benefit.

I own 3 or 4 Carlton Fredericks books. Add Dr. Bieler's older, 'Food is your Best Medicine' to your shelf, also. I wouldn't want to do without my copy of that book, either.

See also my recent reviews for Eva Wong's books, and the older classic, 'Japanese Cult of Tranquillity' by Durckheim, for further, non-nutritional information useful for stress reduction, relaxation and lifestyle conduct issues.

Excellent discussion of arthritis and nutrition. Focuses on three possible causes of arthritis: hypoglycemia, food allergies and vitamin deficiencies. The appendix contains an excellent summary of the uses of various vitamins and minerals. Valuable text for any non dogmatic person who considers good nutrition to be the basis of good health.

I have not read this book but I have been using tea tree oil for several years. It has so many uses, that a written guide is a great idea. It is a natural, safe insect repellent and also soothes the itching & burning from mosquito bites. I have rubbed the oil on my grandson's legs at bedtime to prevent mosquito bites. It is also a solvent and can be used in cleaning products, as well as in shampoo and soap. It is beneficial to dogs because it helps repel fleas & relieve the itchiness from bites. Tea tree oil can remove paints and even permanent marker. I really recommend it, and getting the book would probably be wise, especially if you've never used tea tree oil.

I HAVE JUST COMPLETED READING CYNTHIA OLSEN'S NEWEST BEQUEST TO THE WORLD POPULATION. THE TITLE IN ITSELF TELLS IT ALL, WHAT A GIFT TO THOSE OF US WHO WISH TO TREAT OUR GENERAL AILMENTS TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILIITY WITHOUT HAVING TO REVERT TO CONVENTIONAL PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS AND PRACTICES. IT IS NOT MEANT TO TAKE THE PLACE OF THESE CONVENTIONAL MEDICINES, BUT TO BE USED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE THAT IF WE CANNOT REMEDY OUR AILMENTS "NATURALLY" THEN WE SHALL GO THAT "CONVENTIONAL ROUTE IF NEED BE. UNTIL THEN, OUR "FIRST AID KIT IN A BOTTLE" - AUSTRALIAN TEA TREE OIL SHALL DO ITS ASTOUNDING HEALING.

I AM ASTHMATIC ANDI DO USE THOSE "CONVENTIONAL" MEDICINES WHEN NECESSARY, BUT THERE ARE MANY TIMES WHEN I HAVE FOUND THAT TEA TREE EASES THE PRESSURE THAT COMES WITH DIFFICULT BREATHING - BY JUST PUTTING A FEW DROPS OF TEA TREE IN A BASIN OF WARM WATER AND DRAPING A TOWEL OVER MY HEAD AND BREATHING THE AROMATIC TEA TREE DEEPLY IN AND OUT, I GET GREAT RELIEF. I HAVE ALSO USED THE REMEDIES FOR EARACHES, SORE THROATS AND COUGHS DUE TO RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS. I REPSECT MS. OLSEN'S ADVICE AS TO WHEN TO CONSULT A PHYSICIAN AND I HAVE IN NO WAY LET MY GREAT ADORATION FOR THE TEA TREE HEALING POWERS CLOUD LOGICAL JUDGMENT IN TREATING MY FAMILIES AILMENTS.

THIS LITTLE BOOK IS TRULY ONE THAT EVERY HOME SHOULD HAVE IN THEIR SO CALLED "MEDICINE CHEST" TO BE USED AS THE LISTED SITUATIONS ARISE AND BE VALUED HIGHLY BY EACH AND EVERY BEING AS A NATURAL CURE BEFORE RUNNING OUT IN SEARCH OF OVER THE COUNTER OR PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION. IT IS TRULY REMARKABLE HOW ONE LITTLE BOTTLE CAN CONTAIN SUCH UNIQUE AND HEALING QUALITIES, I SAY BRAVO TO MS. OLSEN AND SUSAN TINKLE IN PUTTING TOGETHER A GREAT LITTLE BOOK, ONE THAT WE CAN REFER TO WHENEVER NEEDED AND ALSO ONE THAT WE CAN BE SURE WILL GIVE US THE INSIGHT TO HELP OURSELVES ON THE ROAD TO HEALING. THANK YOU LADIES FOR A GREAT GIFT!

I am 58 yrs of age retiree from a stressful job. I have been raised on most of the helpful tips that my grandmother taught me beginning at the age of 9. I feel as though Grandmother Laura is speaking to me through these wonderful pages I have read. I am happy to say with the knowledge I have gained from reading and researching medical books, papers of university-information gathered in our local newspapers health hints and Ann Landers - still can't touch this book. All that is printed is true.

Scientific, Fact-Filled Alternative Medicine Handbook
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-20
This is one large book (870 pages!), filled with massive amounts of information regarding vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and other nutrients, and their effect on various diseases. Keep in mind this is a reference guide, primarily for clinicians, so it is not a book one would read through cover-to-cover.

The first section consists of nutrients, listed in alphabetical order. After each nutrient Null lists different diseases that a particular nutrient treats, backed by summaries of various scientific studies. He also provides the references, so one can easily look up the studies for him or herself. The studies come directly from scientific journals. For instance, looking under Zinc, we find that Zinc is beneficial for acne, and Zinc Sulfate and Vitamin A "significantly reduced" the number of papules, pustules, and infiltrates within 4 weeks. This is from a 1977 study found in "Arch Dermatol," i.e. the "Archives of Dermatology" journal.

The next four sections are: Herbal Superstars (well-known herbs), Additional Herbs, Therapeutic Amino Acids, and Essential Amino Acids. These are laid out just like the first section.

The next section consists of various fruits and vegetables and their phytochemical content. For instance, cabbage has over three pages worth of chemicals listed, from 1-cyano-2,3-epithiopropane to Zirconium (at anywhere from 1.4 to 203 ppm). Then Null lists each phytochemical alphabetically referenced to its therapeutic properties. Then he lists different herbal properties (such as "antiviral") followed by herbs that fall under that category.

Appendix A lists anti-aging nutrients (listed in the same manner as section one). Appendix B consists of recommended dosages of various nutrients and herbs. Finally appendix C consists of studies showing the potential misuse of supplements, and what overdoses might look like.

Overall, this book will be useful primarily to the clinician, but others may be interested as well. I am not a clinician, but interested in alternative medicine and the science behind it. No other health book has satisfied my interest as well as this book. My only complaint is that Null sometimes overlooks negative studies, but appendix C does remedy this to some degree.
