I keep this book in my "traveling suitcase" so I always have it with my while on the road. It has been a real encouragement to me each time I read a new meditation. It's wonderful to know that other people share the same frustrations, loneliness, and challenges. An excellent gift for yourself if you travel or for someone you know who needs to be reminded that God is with us where ever we are!

An Invaluable Guide To Greater Understanding

"Through my church bulletins and now through this book, I have tried to help us all grow in our faith. May we come to love Jesus with all our hearts as He lovingly extends His Sacred Heart out to each one of us, His children." Carolyn Kenney

On the surface, Meditations Of The Heart is a de facto breakdown of various parables and other writings in the four Gospels of the Bible (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). What's refreshing about Kenney's musings, though, is the profound introspection concomitant with each presented verse or passage of Scripture.

For example, in relating the biblical story of Jesus's encounter with the Samaritan woman, Kenney highlights the exchange as a metaphor for our own daily encounters with God. As her initial reluctance to acknowledge Jesus was ultimately replaced by her fervent acceptance of his presence, so should we each take the time every day to acknowledge the presence of God in our own lives. The trappings of work, family life, and other obligations constantly threaten to disrupt this connection, but Kenney persuasively conveys the value of not letting such moments as chirping birds and beautiful sunsets pass us by.

Likewise, in breaking down the well-known directive to "Love your enemies," Kenney effectively explains the self-actualizing significance of such an act. In true karmic fashion, by showing patience, tolerance, and compassion to those that mean us harm, we make room for the same to be done for us by others; thus, the true benefit of such an action lies in allowing forgiveness for our own true natures, which greatly augments our individual walks down the path of life.

Meditations Of The Heart would be an invaluable teaching tool in various aspects of the faith community. Through her simple yet powerful teachings, Kenney serves up fresh insights with the potential to enhance millions of lives. Highly recommended.

I actually know the author of this wonderful book quite well. She has been a very dear friend since 1999 when we first met on a trip to Mary's shrine in Medjugorje. I am open to say I have great love for Carolyn and I have seen this book in progress from the very beginning. The meditations in her book give none of us any excuse not to take some time out in the course of our days and remain with him in prayer and solitude. In a frenzy world, most of us have nonstop routines this book is a soothing method to stop the complicated and get simplified in our relationship to Jesus. As I have great love for St. Therese too I have to think this would be a favorite book of hers as well. Carolyn's meditations are thorough, richly beautiful, concrete and leave one's heart have a strong desire to draw closer to Jesus. The beautiful cover of Jesus holding out his sacred heart to all of us alone is a constant source of reminder of his ultimate sacrafice of his own suffering on the cross for our own salvation. Words from my end dont seem able to be conveyed how proud I am of Carolyn's work and this wonderful book. I have known Carolyn for four years now in friendship and quite well. Now I have been given the awesome gioft to see a glimpse of her faith in it's beauty and clarity. I am now more fascinated than ever! Great book!

Puts the history of hunting in perspective for everyone. When you're done reading it, you understand why people hunt. You also understand why people are just as interested in hunting today as they have been throughout time. I would encourage hunters and non-hunters to read the book, as there is much to be appreciated by both groups. In fact, I would encourage re-reading it from time to time. It has that quality of good literature in that it reveals something new and interesting each time it is read.

Even non-hunters should own this

This little book goes to the heart of why we do what we do.I have always known that hunting does not make sense money-wise.Here is an in-depth explanation as to the reasons behind it. If people as a whole could understand that you are only doing things are right and natural,I feel like that would go a long way to getting the Bambiest off our backs.I have seen in other places that this book is a good one to re-read and I could not agree more.No hunters library should be without this.

An antidote to muddled thinking

Ortega y Gasset brings philosophical rigor and logic to the consideration of hunting. In a powerful counterblast to muddled, emotion-driven, anthropomorphic, confused, sentimental arguments - one can't call them "ideas" - OyG clarifies the core questions and quandaries, and gives a sound philosophical foundation for the defense - indeed, the celebration -of the hunting imperative that 21st century urban man sublimates or ignores at his environmental and spiritual peril.

An absolute necessity for the animal rights debate.

Review Date: 1998-07-19
Ortega delves into the art of hunting, and gets to the root of the matter. Both the nature of human, and of animal are examined. Be forewarned, this is heavy duty philosophy, not just an article on where to hang a tree stand. Ortega wrote in the early twentieth century, and so some will think his ideas are dated, and that we know much better now. This gives rise to the thought that humans change rapidly. Ortega's work stands because we do not substantially change over just a hundred or even a thousand years. This is why Shakespear and the Bible are still applicable, and why Ortega's Meditations On Hunting still stands. The act of hunting has changed over the centuries, to evolve into sport. Ortega delves into this also, and his answer to our inner questions, and the current questions of animal rightists is so clear and distilled that it shines in one's brain. It is rare to find one so clear in academia.

My husband gave me this book for Christmas and it has become very special to me. As someone who also grew up in the Presbyterian tradition, I had always felt the absence of Mary in the church. When, as an adult, I turned to a more "catholic" religion, I was finally able to embrace Mary. This book, with it's beautiful illustrations and wonderful essays is a spiritually rewarding path to Mary.

Very good edition of an important book

Review Date: 1998-04-22
America seems to be the country where there the translation of Evola's works is marching on faster than anywhere else. Surprisingly this tendency started at the same time as the breakdown of the Communist superpower. Are now even Americans for a future beyond Americanism? Another leading role for the American translations in the "Inner Traditions" series is the beautifulness of the covers, the cheapness of the books, the including of an index - the only thing lacking is the bibliographic information regarding the collected articles which build this book - and much more important the quality of the translations. Guido Stucco has done a fine job again and he has shown in his preface to "The Yoga of Power" his insight into the Evolian thinking: "Evola pointed the way to a steep and solitary path that in my view is still a valid alternative to both the path of koinonia - of human fellowship, which contemporary society has been promoting for the past thirty years - and the spiritualized bourgeois individualism promoted by the New Age movement."

This solitary path can wind his way to the peak of a mountain as this book shows. The spiritual dimension lies first and mainly in the act of climbing, but then expands to the legends connected with the mountains and the experience of the elements - ice and storm, rain and sun. Evola's ashes returned after his dead to his beloved Mount Rosa, to be buried in the eternal ice: the ascend to the peak as a symbol of resurrection. The modern opposition to this experience of transfiguration is symbolzied in skiing: "In skiing the modern spirit finds itself essentially at home; this modern spirit is intoxicated with speed, with constant change, with acceleration." With this book the reader lets this modern spirit behind and reaches to those heights, where ice and light unite in eternal joy.

Essentially, I agree with the other reviewers, although I have to add that these essays were not "fun" reads. I was expecting something I couldn't put down like "Ride the Tiger," but this book I finished more because I wanted to have read it than that I enjoyed reading it.

A Rarefied and Lofty Evola

Loftiness, elevation, height-a leitmotiv in all Evola's books. This work bespeaks his passion for mountain-climbing and lends itself as a metaphor for a life of striving towards increasingly higher goals. An excellent introduction to the Italian philosopher, and a highly enjoyable read in its own right.

Not for Sunday strollers

This slim volume is collection of brief essays and magazine articles thematically centered on, as the title states, Mountain Climbing as Metaphor for the Spiritual Quest.

A few of the articles are dated, but the rest are gems. What Evola means by the spiritual quest is not the stuff of New Age fantasy or the gooey sentimentality of religiosity.

Evola's prose in these essays is clear and direct. He manages to give us a glimpse into a harsh and rarefied world of transcendent beauty. This book may be the best introduction to Evola for those who are not yet prepard for his more scholarly, esoteric and demanding writings.

This book is wonderful! I received it as a gift about a year ago and just rediscovered it. If you've ever been to England or have dreamed of going you should read this book. The author makes some very valid points about faith and living life that I had never thought about before. The chapters are short enough to read one every night before you go to bed (that's what I do). I would strongly encourage you to buy this book. It has been a true blessing to me.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It helped me realize that I rush through life and I need to slow down and enjoy as many moments with my children as I can. I keep it as a reference to help me remember to take life more slowly and savor more moments with my children. My husband picked up the book and couldn't put it down! He even started inventing his own sayings for the adorable things our children do that we usually don't take note of! I highly recommend it as required reading for parents in the 21st century who are so busy, they don't pay attention to the most precious moments!

I'm one of the least mindful folks you could imagine....very goal driven, type-A, go-go-go. I've tried meditation without much success, and was pretty nihilistic about my ability to truly slow down and live in the moment. Then I read this book. First time, cover-to-cover in one evening (there's my go-go-go thing again), and then again, slowly, over a few weeks, letting it settle in a bit. And then, i actually started to utilize the verses in the morning with my daughter (i'm the get-her-dressed-fed-taken-to-school dad in the AM), and was surprised...ok, maybe amazed...that even I could actually find that moment, and really 'be' with my daughter in that time. I rush her less, which i'm thinking she's happy about, but more so, I really savor our time together in a more intense way than previously. Life changing? no, at least not yet (baby steps, eh?), but this book taught me, by utilizing verse to help me be more mindful, how to begin this process. And knowing me, that's actually a pretty amazing feat. I'd recommend this book to any parent who could use a little guidance into being a more mindful, particularly with their kids.

This book made such a difference in my life. I have an easier time dealing with stressful events that used to drive me crazy, even after they were over. I feel more compassion toward my child when she gets challenging, and as a result, it's easier to deal with. Most of the verses and meditation techniques are easy to learn and then do on my own. The verses only take a few seconds to do during the day and I even made up one of my own which I now recite with my child.

Since I work in the field of mindfulness and meditation research, this book proved to be(pardon the expression) enlightening. Anyone who wants to teach a class or a workshop that uses any form of self-reflective strategy will find something useful here, and I highly recommend it to psychotherapists since mindfulness-based therapies are proving to be one of the most effective ways to treat serious emotional problems. I was particularly impressed by the ways that mindfulness has been successfully integrated into weight loss and eating disorder programs. Another fascinating chapter describes how meditation and mindfulness can be used to enhance relationships between partners. A real gem: expensive but well worth the price.

I am a wellness coach at a cancer center and stress is one of our biggest challenges. Last year I bought this book in hopes that it would serve as a resource for me and staff around "mindfullness training" and stress reduction techniques.

It has been helpful for it has not only helped build my knowledge and understanding around mindfullness training, but it also has given me a understanding of the empirical evidence. Even though I am not a therapists the case studies have been very helpful in building my understanding of how mindfullness training works in real world situations.

This book has accompanied me on several plane trips when I usually take a good mystery, but instead have been deep inside mindfullness concepts I did not what to give up. It's packed full of information - but even for a wellness coach a must if you are working on stress in the worksite.

What a surprise to read a devotional book for singles that doesn't patronize, marginalize or wallow in self pity! To the contrary, these beautifully written devotional thoughts look unflinchingly at the whole of life as a single adult and simply hold us accountable to be the person God created us to be! I love that the author has obviously lived a full and rewarding life as a single adult. Because of that life experience, the voice of the book assumes that I, the reader, might actually have a rewarding life as well and be older than 22! What a novel idea!

Leigh McLeroy's latest literary offering, Moments for Singles, is fresh, transparent, real, and full of wisdom for all persons regardless of their relational status. The glue that holds it all together is the simple idea of first things first, and then eveything else will fall into place. It is written from a traditional Christian point of view and amplifies the love of Christ for all of us, in spite of all our wrinkles. Ms. McLeroy stresses that Christ's love will only be comprehended through a living intimacy with Him, and is necessary for us to love others properly. Pursue Him above all else.
