John Reiger is a master in writing on the subject of environmental history. Very few in his field has put forth the time or energy he has taken to produce such fine written works concerning sportsmen and the environment. I have personally taken his classes and have always felt enlightened by them and sad to see them end. If you are concerned about the environment you should read not just this, but all of the books this man has written.

A Masterful Work From a true Lover of Nature

As a student at Ohio University, I have taken classes with Dr. Reiger for nearly two years. Taking History as a major along with English has afforded me the pleasure of receiving Dr. Reiger's views directly from the source. Naturally, I wanted to see what his book has to offer a student who has limited knowledge of conservation.

I was delighted to find that this work is extremely well written (not that I expected anything less from Dr. Reiger), and also written in such a way as to be easily followed by readers less interested in either history or English than I. A thorough perusal of this work will leave the reader with a fine understanding of the history of the conservation movement from a sportsman's perspective, perhaps the only 'real' form of conservation.

The only negative I can perceive is the amount of notes for each chapter. The astounding amount of side information is not an issue for my self, but for some less active readers it might cause problems.

I really love Lone Pine field guides. Each book has its own style, but every Lone Pine guide I've read, including this one, has more than just identification tools - they actually teach you about the species they describe. That being said, the keys included in this book are very helpful - no matter how great the pictures, salamanders still confuse me. However, the key included makes it easy to identify a salamander (assuming you get more than a fleeting glance) or frog. Another hit for Lone Pine.

No scaley 'ol reptiles here! Just everything and more that you frog and salamander hobbyists want to know. Great quality color photos throughout, and book is organized so it is easily referred to again and again. I was especially impressed with the identification keys, photos and illustrations of egg, tadpole and juvenile (as well as adult) forms of most species.
Much of the information is applicable to the rest of the United States. This book just knocked my socks off--and I collect books on amphibians!

The Settlement of Southern Oregon

I found this a great read. It covers the history of Southern Oregan from the Hudson's Bay Trapping days to the early settlements. Emerson notes the early settlers by name and covers the blazing of the Applegate trail and the true history of this region.

There are few books about this place and time in history and this is by far the best I have ever read. He covers the topic in great detail, this book details how the other trails were used in forging this all important route for immigrants. The book is full of pictures and drawings of the area and settlers. It also includes detailed maps of the trails discussed. Anyone interested in the settlement of Southern Oregon and it's history will find this book a great and informative read.

An exciting, involving true story

William Emerson's The Applegate Trail Of 1846: A Documented Guide To The Original Southern Emigrant Route To Oregon is a fascinating historical book, peppered with twelve illustrations, twelve maps, and thirty-five black-and-white photographs, of the first wagon train to follow the route through southern Oregon that would one day be known as the Applegate Trail. An exciting, involving true story made all the more compelling by the meticulous documentation, The Applegate Trail Of 1846 is enhanced with an appendix of names (which includes the other names for the Applegate Trail, names of the exploring party, the volunteer road party, emigrants on the first wagon train, names of the relief parties), a bibliography, and an extensive index. An amazing look into the trials and travails of settling the American West, The Applegate Trail Of 1846 is a recommended addition to school and community library western American history collections.

Very good ride planning guide
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-14
While there are several multi-day trips in the guide, this book is targeted at the more serious recreational rider who is looking for day rides of 25 to 60 miles. It covers quite a large area, mostly in Washington State, with general and detailed descriptions of the routes, augmented by line maps. One nice feature is that it details the vertical profile of each ride so you can see what you're getting into when it comes to climbing hills at various milage points in the rides.

I've ridden about 1/3 of the routes and have found the rides well planned and accurately described. There is always a place to stop for a break near mid-way, and often alternatives to shorten or lengthen the trip. A great book to get you in touch with quiet roads or bike trails that you otherwise may never discover.

I have two copies of this book.

It opened my eyes to things I had never seen wandering the Coastal Range and Cascade Mountains of Oregon and SW Washington.

A must have for naturalists in the Pacific Northwest.

This field guide is well organized with beautiful photos. Each butterfly listed has a key for recognition, variations, life history as well as habitat range and the time of year you are likely to see this butterfly on the wing. A particularly nice feature is is the list of names for each as butterflies often have akas (also known as.)Dr. Pyles broad knowledge of nature allows him to include additional information about the history of butterfly study. This book will supplant other field guides whose scope intends to include the entire continent. The beautiful durable cover will look good on your desk and will function well in your field pack.
The tremendous amount of data collected in these pages reflect a dedication to the study of butterflies that is inspiring to the amateur and professional naturalist.

Whether you are a climber, a hiker, a car traveler, or just an armchair explorer, the Beckey guides are the indispensible resources for your mountain experience. The three volumes are filled with information about the natural and human history of the Washington Cascades, as well as complete route and access data for every significant summit. The photos alone are reason enough to own these books. If you are interested in really "knowing" the Washington Cascades, you MUST have them in your library. Highest possible recommendation.

An indispensabe reference book for Northwest Climbers.

I have used this Guidebook so many times in the past 12 years that I've had to purchase it three times. The definitive section on the Picket Range alone is worth the price of the book.

For those who want to experience the North Cascades as they were in the 30's and 40's, reading the "Trails and Alpine Hiking Approaches" section will steer you in the right direction. This book is rife with golden kernels of information found nowhere else. Any serious climber should have all three of the Cascade Alpine Guide books.

The Territory of Oregon's Original Land Surveyors
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-17
This Book is of unusual interest to me because forty and more years ago I did a lot of surveying in the mythical State of Jefferson. North of the 42nd parallel I had to live with the work described by Kay Atwood.

The political environment surrounding this initial survey work on the Willamette Meridian was news to me. I must say that the Surveyors General for the Oregon Territory met these challenges much better than the General Land Office south of the 42nd parallel some 20 and more years later.

I would have been interested in some of the details of the surveying at that time. Atwood describes the sun compass used by these original surveyors and has an illustration of a magnetic compass. How were the two instruments utilized during periods of rain and overcast? How did Butler Ives know when he reached the 42nd parallel, the territorial boundary?

As part of the story of the original land survey, Atwood includes considerable local history. For me, this was a most enjoyable read.

Amazing look into the lives and struggles of these unsung pioneers

Chaining Oregon: Surveying the Public Lands of the Pacific Northwest, 1851-1855 is a scholarly, in-depth history of the early federal surveyors of the Pacific Northwest, who labored for the US General Land Office between 1851 and 1855, and the impact their work had on America's overall work to settle the valleys and mountains of what would eventually become the states of Oregon and Washington. A handful of black-and-white images, including reproductions of early surveyor maps, enhance this amazing look into the lives and struggles of these unsung pioneers. Highly recommended, especially for college library American History shelves.
