I have read the book, twice, and keep going back to read again. It covers Ellmann, Estabrooks, and Ericksonian styles of hypnosis thoroughly. This is possibly the only book you will ever need regarding hypnosis.

I wouldn't say that this is a stunningly different book to have - but it does act as a summary for many other books. It's easy to read and has a lot fo goodlittle tips on it but nothing is like the real practice...

It's a quick easy read however I'd echo the sentiments of some reviewers who don't like the New Age references implied here. Tad James has gone on to do a lot of Huna stuff since, something that I've looked at several times and keep backing away from. It's too new agey and wishy washy for me :-).

I gave it 3 stars because what good stuff there is, is fairly well written and useful. It's a shame there isn't more depth on Estabrooks and Elman however. I read it in about an hour or so.

My preference if I had to give someone 10 books only on hypnosis, would be Monsters and Magical Sticks, Training Trances, Ledochowski's Deep Trance Training Manual, Ericksonian Approaches and Tranceformations, Elman's Hypnotherapy, Bill O'Hanlon-Solution Oriented Hypnosis, Therapeutic Trances by Gilligan and of course Erickson's own material--not necessarily in that order either.

Then again I am biased as I really enjoyed the books I've mentioned. All the mentioned books go into greater depth in their particular areas (ok, they overlap...a lot) and as far as I can tell none of them head into New Age land either.

I agree with the other reviewer with a little of my own opinion...

I bought this book a day before I wrote this review at the Conscious Life Expo, and in one reading, I can tell that this is a great book I will consult over and over again because of its wonderful nuances and writing clarity on the subject. Of course, I agree with the other reviewer that this is far superior to Estabrooks' singular "you are getting sleepy... Sleeepy..." Svengali style basicness with it. But then Estabrooks' was the 1950s, Tad James is a great 1990s, 21st century update. And the advice on Ericksonian hypnosis is practical, economical and without fluff... Just giving you specifics and whys' instead of puffery and "this is hard" thinking about semantics and all that kind of thing. In short, that's why its got the five stars.

I got this for both myself and my spouse. While I found it somewhat helpful my spouse said the voice was not soothing enough to work on them. My spouse has been under before so it maybe that I had no expectations or past experience to draw from. I found that I did sleep better and while I usually don't have a problem exercising anyway, I would say it helped to listen to it to prepare for the next day's routine.

In the beginning I was very skeptical . . .

Surfing, viewing and clicking away at new products on Amazon one day, I'm not quite sure what led me to the 'Motivation to Move! Hypnosis Exercise Motivation' CD, but I will say this . . . I'm totally and completely glad I did and I'm sold on this product! No kidding!

I've listened to many a subliminal/hypnosis tape/CD's in my day and for the most part they all turned out to be full of more 'new age-ish' type music than anything else. Perhaps the 'subliminal message' was indeed there but it never seemed to sink in for me . . . that is until I purchased Trevor Scot's 'Motivation to Move! Hypnosis Exercise Motivation' CD.

I'm starting my third week today and it is absolutely amazing how my mindset has totally and completely changed regarding exercising! It wasn't a fact of 'not' wanting to exercise, it was a lack of motivation to initially start and more importantly stick with it once I started. However, it appears I honestly have not experienced that problem once since I started to listen to the 'Motivation to Move! Hypnosis Exercise Motivation' CD.

By the end of the first week of listening to the CD every night before I went to bed and following Trevor's instructions to the 'T', the following week I found myself rising on queue at 5am every morning. No forcing myself to get up, no grumbling when I did or convincing myself I could sneak in another hour of sleep, I truly wanted to get up and exercise!

Each day afterward was as if on queue I'd wakeup at 5am, jump out of bed and literally jump on the exercise equipment in my home and put in a good one to two hour workout before heading out the door to work later that morning.

It has been an amazing two-weeks so far and although Mr. Scot suggests that you listen to this CD for 21 days straight, preferably before you go to bed at night and as needed afterward, I plan to continually listen to the CD every night well past the 21 day suggestion because not only does it help me sleep better, but in the morning I'm raring to go and exercise and that's the exact results I was looking for when I purchased this CD.

In my opinion, for those who are honestly open-minded, accept and realize the truth that `no quick weight loss' diet is ever going to do the trick and sincerely are looking for something that will truly work and get you once and for all off the dreaded yo-yo rollercoaster diet dilemma and on to the only true proven weight loss method that actually works, i.e., exercising, the 'Motivation to Move! Hypnosis Exercise Motivation' CD would be a perfect place to start. I highly recommend following the instructions precisely and I honestly believe you'll experience the same results I am currently experiencing. By this CD and see for yourself!

First, this is sold by Amazon NOT by a private reseller so I take issue with the handmade product. NO plastic seal on the case. The insert and label on the cd were printed with an injet printer... you can tell when the ink smears if slightly dampened. This is to be expected if I make my own cd but NOT from Amazon. Sad.
Content: Less than stellar. I loathe the repeated countdown ending with a snap of the fingers. I HATE THAT! Not relaxing. The speaker's voice is masculine with a slight affect like Sean Connery. Distracting.
NOT worth the extraordinarily high price.
Suggestion: Try Glenn Harrold's cd's instead.

It seems to me that those written works which have the most to say are those of the shortest in length. This little gem gets right to the point while outlining key ideas without overwhelming the reader with that which is really inconsequential. Think of this book as an instruction manual for constructing personal prose.

I found this a fascinating addition to my study of hypnosis and dealing with the aspect of my "shadow" self. It's really amazing how many of us sabotage ourselves with negative thought patterns. Although it may seem simplistic in nature...our thoughts really are our reality. And Coue takes us right to the heart of the issue. A remarkable book.

Émile Coué

was a French psychologist and pharmacist who introduced a method of psychotherapy, healing, and self-improvement, based on autosuggestion or self-hypnosis.

He has been called the Father of Applied Conditioning.

Coué, who came from old noble Breton stock, learned hypnosis from Ambroise-Auguste Liébault, the founder of Nancy School, and in 1913 Coué founded the Lorraine Society of Applied Psychology.

His book Self-mastery through conscious autosuggestion caused a sensation on its publication in England (1920) and in the United States (1922).

Coué introduced a new method, the self-starting of conscious autosuggestion. He modified the theory of Abbé Faria by proposing that for autosuggestion to flow from the mind, one has to feed it first.

By repeating words or images as self-suggestion to the subconscious mind, one can condition the mind, and then the conditioned mind will produce an autogenic command when required.

His familiar mantra, "Day by day, in every way, I am getting better and better" (Tous les jours à tous points de vue je vais de mieux en mieux), is sometimes known as Couéism, or the Coué method. The method depended in part on routine repetition of the formula.

Afterwards Johannes Schultz developed this theory as Autogenic training

Quote

Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better. - Emile Coue

You are asked to remain awake or it will not work. Then she puts you to sleep. Hard to stay awake. I recommend it only if you are determined to work with it over a period of time.

Whilst only half way through the book, participating in the accompanied exercises, I find this book easy to read and comprehend. The authors provide an extensive background introduction and history to the origins of Hypnosis. I'd recommend this as a starting place if you're interested in learning more about the area. I've not extensively explored the CD that accompanies this book, but will likely turn to it next. Repetition of excercises is required (I believe this was suggested in another review) in an effort to get the most out of them. Overall an easy to read and thorough introduction - a good starting point.

These authors are perhaps best known for their book entitled 'Principles of Self Hypnosis' (now out of print) which for many years was the most regularly recommended primer on this subject. This academic work completely updates the former book and adds much new research to the subject area. It is very extensive in nature and written in a style that facilitates access to both the professional and the lay person wishing to use self hypnosis for their own benefit. The book is accompanied by an excellent audiotape which clearly demonstrates many of the techniques described in the book. Whilst appearing a little expensive when compared with other self hypnosis books, this book and audiotape (Available separately as Steps to Self Hypnosis) can definitely claim to be 'top of the pile' in quality of content, research and writing style.

Just want to point out something I discovered when I bought this book ("Effective Self Hypnosis") and "self-hypnosis plain and simple" (same authors): These two books are nearly identical! The text is pretty much the same (I sampled several pages from various chapters, couldn't find a single difference), although the layout of some of the chapters is a little different. The main differences between the two:
-titles
-this book is hardcover, 'plain and simple' is paperback
-this book has photos (historical ones, iirc), the other one does not
-this book has a more stylized layout of the text, the other more plain
-this book comes with a tape (I didn't buy it with the tape, though)

Just writing this to make sure that people who are thinking of buying are aware of this. Since I couldn't figure out any significant differences, I gave one of the books to my dad ;)

(If Amazon doesn't think this type of information belongs in the review section, I agreed, but I don't know where else to post such info.)

As for my review: I find this book to be a refreshing change from most of the self-hypnosis books out there these days. There seems to be preciously few books that do not use the old standard "write your suggestions, memorize them, go into self-hypnosis and apply them" procedure, which really hasn't changed in the last 15-30 years or so (not to mention tonnes of rules or guidelines on how to write suggestions). Besides, what brought my attention to self-hypnosis in the first place were time-distortion and pain-control (If you have to endure shots and bloodsamples on a regular basis, this becomes really interesting), two things very few books teach properly, if at all). In this book you learn a much more adaptive approach, where instead of following a mechanical process to achieve things, you take advantage of the natural tendency of the mind to change from moment to moment, wandering here and there. And it's wonderfully free of all the "whoppedidooda-hey-hurray how great isn't self-hypnosis, and how misconcepted aren't people about this!" style of writing so common with so many authors. Instead of presenting self-hypnosis scripts which you may or may not be able to use, this book gives very simple and easy-to-follow instructions, in the form of short 'exercises' that help you learn what hypnosis is about. (This way you'll also be able to take advantage of self-hypnosis for other things than sitting in a chair thinking through memorized sequences of words and images).

That being said, you don't get consistent results unless you practice a few minutes now and then (daily?) over a period of weeks or months. I'll freely admit I'm not the most experienced self-hypnotist (the grand canyon of understatement), and I have yet to achieve many of the things taught in this book; meaning this review should not be taken as any kind of guarantee that the methods will work. Reading this book will not be a life-changing experience. But using the methods presented, perhaps it is possible, over time, to change one bit here and there. ;)

And thank God (figure of speech, I'm an atheist) this book doesn't have "Quit smoking! Make more money! Experience perfect health! Get the life YOU want!" written all over it. No, it's not possible to guarantee that you can have the life you want, and you may actually not succeed in quitting smoking in as little as a few months/weeks, even with the best available resources. No, you can't loose 200 pounds of excess fat easily; it takes years upon years. No you won't become a millionaire just because you combine "'how to become rich' for dummies" with hypnosis (though if you write a book on self-hypnosis, and riddle it with over-optimistic statements, you can at least add a little to you income). People are different. For most of us 'Good things take Time'. This book doesn't try to sell itself by saying otherwise.

I give it a solid 4 stars. (Why not 5? Because perfection is a hard thing to achieve, and I'd like to have an extra star in case I finally find that one special life-changing book...)

Interesting reading---and it worked!!

I found this book and CD combination to be very informative. I learned a great deal about hypnosis, its background, and theories. There were many inspiring case reports that showed how hypnosis helps. I found them fascinating. But what I really liked is that by reading the book and listening to the CD, I gained a real skill with hypnosis. Self-hypnosis helped me in many ways. The method presented gave me concrete tools to make some changes, and it seems to be sticking! I liked that the exercises were doable and felt natural. I also found the explanations clear. Also, I didn't have to read the book cover to cover to start seeing changes. I could skip to sections that seemed most relevant for me. Over time, I have actually read the whole book and I enjoyed doing so. This book and CD has everything you need to personalize your self-hypnosis experience and get results. I highly recommend this book and CD.

As a hypnotherapist, it was nice to read more of the medical approch to hypnosis. Lots of information about why and how we get sick. It made me feel a little more knowlegable so that not only can I help, but I could also explain why and how we get sick in laymans terms, very advantagious in the pretalk. In reading the book, some outdated technics were used,(probably filler for the book). I'm not saying that they don't work, but these techniecs are no longer used.

Overall the book has lots of good scripts, hypnotic inductions, deepening technics & tests. Another book to add to my collection!

This book has to be approached, that is, read, from the standpoint of a hypnotherapist learning to improve his skill set. It is, in a way, a difficult book to read because reading scripts tends to put you into trance. You must consistently read it with an eye toward picking out the phrasing used and the intent of the wording in the scripts. If this is done, the text is quite instructive and complete. The casual reader
looking for party tricks won't find them here. This is a book
for those with serious interest willing to let its wisdom
permeate their subconscious slowly, slowly, deeper and deeper.

As a registered Hypnotherapist, I have read many books on hypnosis and this is one of the best. It covers the detailed workings of the induction techniques, deepening processes and similar items. It does an excellent job of explaining how to tell when the person is responding and how deep they are going. The emphasis is on medical hypnosis but it can easily be applied to any situations. If I had to get rid of the hypnosis books in my library and could only keep one then this is the one that I would keep.

I loved the section on "Embedding Meanings Inductions" as well reading stories about Ericksonian and other hypnosis pioneers. Everything you need to know about hypnosis is in this book. It's fantastic for hypnotists and psychologists of all levels and is a reference book worth keeping. The readability is VERY good and all topics are explained thoroughly and simply to avoid confusion. I love this very much!

hypnosis no replacement for what works in therapy

I cannot believe that people mistake these sort of trendy gimmicks like hypnosis for serious therapy. Forty years of outcome research shows that the therapeutic relationship, client characteristics and extratherapeutic events are what produce change in clients. Placebo effect has been found to be an important factor in promoting successful change as well, and in this light, hypnosis, EMDR and other snake oil cures might have some benefit. They do not belong in an ethical or serious providers office otherwise. The book provides no outcome studies or research that shows the efficacy of the voodoo being prescribed. I believe that hypno-"therapy" is often used by clincians who are unable or unwilling to make the close human connections required for truly effective therapy. For those who do not have human skills, finger waving or clock watching is the ticket. The book is also not well written: perhaps the lack of interest it generates in the reader is intentional. I, for one, felt like I had fallen into a deep sleep while reading about the seemingly endless, mechanical techniques. In conclusion, unless you have a wobbly table or need a cure for insomnia, save your money and buy a well-written book that offers some hope of change written by a therapist with concerns for his human clients, like Scott Miller or Albert Ellis.

An excellent manual ... if you know what you're reading.

When we take into consideration what this book is supposed to be, that is, a guide to deeper and more productive inductions, the Handbook fills this niche very well.

Those who purchase this book expecting to pour over case after case of imperical data proving the efficacy of hypnotherapy are obviously incapable of reading editorial reviews. This book is not intended to be a scientific journal of double blind tests and control experiments. Indeed, neither the authors nor any reviewer claim such. As has been made clear, this Handbook is merely meant to augment the therapist's own style and present alternatives to techniques for patients that prove to be resistant or not as highly suggestible as others.

For imperical data, consult the New England Journal. For those who have actually studied hypnosis and wish to help their clients break through barriers they thought unachievable, the Handbook is a valuable asset.

The encyclopedic nature of this text shows a careful and complete overview of the field in addition to the practical applications gleaned from years of actual use of these methods. This book a must-have for the practitioner looking to enhance their therapeutic techniques.

Unlike another reviewer, who obviously has never used hypnosis in his practice, hypnosis in therapy, whether as a primary or adjunctive modality, has been proven to be a HIGHLY interpersonal therapy and, when used correctly, a highly effective modality as well in my practice and in those of others as well. That reviewer would do well to do a better review of the literature before pronouncing hypnosis as "snake-oil." Highly recommended.

This book is a well-done compilation of induction techniques that can serve as models for practicing hypnotherapists. It is thoughtfully organized and a useful reference and learning tool. I was surprised by the review by "David Burns, Ph.D." who feels that hypnosis is unethical in psychotherapy. I put the name in quotes because I'm not sure whether that is his or her real name. Anyone with a Ph.D. in psychology would know that hypnosis is a well-validated and widely accepted medical technique. One would have to wonder where "David Burns" got his Ph.D. to be so unaware of the research evidence on hypnosis. Hartland's textbook Medical and Dental Hypnosis is well documented and gives references to countless studies showing its effectiveness in medical practice. As a psychiatrist who has used hypnosis as a tool in my practice for 30 years, I have found it to be an invaluable adjunct to both cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic approaches. If anything is unethical, it is depriving patients of a valuable tool because the therapist has a personal bias, ungrounded in scientific evidence, against hypnosis.

Written by the professional psychotherpist, this book explains thru patient examples on how hypnosis can successfully completent traditional therapy. The advice written has for his readers is that we all have to learn how to love ourselves, take care of our body and mind. If you think of hypnosis as means of relaxation, this is a book for you. The goal of the book is not to teach you how to go into a deep trance, but rather how to attain alpha state of the mind is hort, 90 seconds increments that can be repeated throughout the day. Author teaches us that as human beings, we all have our urges (that can be controlled), beliefs (some of which need to be changed, e.g. smoking or any other unhealthy habit) and finally we have a power over deciding on how we want to act. For hypnosis to be successful, we need to want to impelement a change that will be good for us, or else hypnosis will not work. It is only at the end of the book that author discusses three different methods of self hypnosis induction: HIP induction, reverse hand lavitation induction and the Kreskin auto-conditioning induction. However, this book will not provide you with any self-hypnosis scripts regardless of the goals you wish to reach. Further readings reference part of the book is the place to check out for addtional books, materials and resources on the subject. This is a quick and easy read.

A wonderful book that could change your life . . .

Self-hypnosis is subtle but very real. At first, it's hard for some to believe that the mind has the power to change life for the better, but self hypnosis WORKS. To prove it, keep a short daily diary for a month or two at the onset of this program. Log what you hope to change, and then jot down a sentence or two every day to note any improvement in your life. The power of your mind will amaze you.

I particularly like the added chapter on how to deal with stress, and Gail Sheey's introduction is excellent.

Thank you, Dr. Fisher.

I bought this book when I was doing research for a stress management class at the University of Utah. The information in this book is so useful and readable. It takes the mystery out of hypnosis by explaining the mind-body connection. It also explains how hypnosis can be used to break habits and to enhance your imagination. No matter how far in trance you get, you can still use hypnosis for self improvement. He explains how, with practice, you can use self hypnosis for even controling you automatic nervous system by diverting blood flow. Even the Psychologist I work for found this book to be very useful because of the stories about self-hypnosis to prepare for surgery. He also explains about how our belief systems cause us stress and how to overcome these thoughts so that we can live happy lives. He has a test to measure your hypnotic capacity, that went over great with my class. There are few books written on self hypnosis that you can accually sit down and read, this book excelled in this area.

I bought this book hoping to learn how to use self hypnosis, and how to do it myself. Instead, I spent reading chapter after chapter of stories that just repeat themselves on how others found self hypnosis to be very helpful. Well, duhhh, if I didn't know that already I wouldn't have bought the book! It's a waste of time and money. If you're looking for a practical guide on how to use self hypnosis, this is not it. If you just need something to help you fall asleep, well, stick with it - It would do the trick! Can I have my money back?

This is a "review" I was sent via a book owner from a reader in Paris. I wanted to share it with you. "We want to give our warmest thanks to Lynne for lending us her book about self-hypnosis, we learned yesterday morning that Marc's surgery should be today instead of Monday so I read the book very fast (it is realy fascinating) and we tried the surgery preparation yesterday evening and this morning before I brought him to the hospital. And I could even talk to him on the phone this afternoon where he told me he has awakened much better than usual.! Thank you so much!"

I have no opinion of this book, never read it. I do, however, believe, that Samer, or whatever, needs to pull his underwear WAY out of his behind and have some ice cream or something.

This book is a complete waste of time. Meditation is completely ridiculous. You don't lose weight by meditating or by praying to the gods. You lose weight when you eat less. So here is a suggestion Catherine..and i presume you are still quite huge. I will write a book for you , and it will be very short. STOP EATING!!! Everyone who bought this book i recommend you to do the same. It's not brain surgery. Quit putting sugar on your toothpaste and stop eating buckets of KFC. That may help.

Don't forget. FOOD IS NOT LOVE.

This author has impacted my life tremendously with basic down to earth writing style, and virtually tons of information. From the first day, I felt better. I am using her process not only for my weight, but I am building my confidence and self esteem. My teenagers are benefiting from it too. I hear them say things that they read in the book. I hope this author keeps writing!!

The relaxation techniques for meditation and self hypnosis have already made a remarkable difference in my life after a day or work. Showing me not only affirmations, but how to create a process for myself has been helpful too. I liked the way the author integrated some personal information as she guided the reader and involved them in the process. I appreciate the skill level of this lady. I never realized how important it is to really test your level of desire to accomplish your goal, how to build the desire..how to find your motivator and use it as a catalyst for success.. There is so much to this little book. I can't wait for the companion guide to come out.

I read this book in one or two days. It is simply fascinating! It's a story told by a psychiatrist, who, while conducting psychoanalysis with a troubled young lady, accidentaly uncovered her past lives. Her current problems in her relationships and health (she suffered from anxiety and depression) turned out to be rooted not to problems in her childhood but to problems and events of her previous lives. Catherine also discovered an amazing ability to talk to the "masters" when being hypnotized. The book is definitely worth the read!
