So much to shareReview Date: 2008-03-08
For the neophyte, the path is aptly opened; for anyone 'long on the road', the new perspectives or reminders are equally beneficial. Kala's book is so packed with information that one must 'sit with' that it took me quite some time to savor.
One of Kala's insights that I most enjoyed, was the perspective that we are surrounded by the energies that we put forth in our thinking. If we cultivate this surrounding field with negativity, that is what we breath in--perpetuating our negative experience of the world.
"9 Life Altering Secrets" has many more gifts to offer.
I am thankful to Kala for bringing these schools of spiritual introspection back to the forefront...and for sharing from her own learning and insight.

...a revelation for the soul.Review Date: 2008-02-23
From Lesson 1, where she explains that we are here to learn and grow, and that which we haven't learned we repeat until we have fully experienced the lesson; To Lesson 9, in which she sums up her teachings by allowing the student to become aware that "all is revealed in the journey, not in the destination."
Her tender thoughts and words of wisdom go beyond the traditions of reaching the mind and extend to the deeper subconscious where the soul rests.
Nine life-altering lessonsReview Date: 2008-09-03
This book offers lessons to be learned - many more than the promised nine - to anyone traveling a path to spiritual well being. Whether those lessons are truly "life altering" will depend on the reader's path and how long they've traveled, but even the most road weary will find something of use in this unassuming primer.
The nine lessons touted in the title are simple concepts, attributable to many major religions, but most recently aggregated under the umbrella of the "new age" movement. In the book's introduction, Everything Old is "New Age" Again, author Kala Ambrose tells readers it's not her intention to teach them anything new but to remind them what's been taught for years and what they already know on a soul level. The lesson's that follow - universal magic, thought creation and manifestation, oneness, the soul beyond the self, existing in the now, and absence of evil - aren't groundbreaking, but instead deliver a certain type of clarity that's usually attained by being deftly reminded of something you already knew.
Those exploring what's commonly referred to as new age thought - which Ambrose calls esoteric teachings and points out are actually very old - for the first time will find "Nine Life Altering Lessons" an easy, accessible entry into alternative belief. The simplicity of the structure, the language and the teachings themselves are easy to read and understand. Those already familiar with the basic concepts might find this a useful book to help remind them of truths that are easily forgotten in modern society. Either group can glean insight from Ambrose's words, either by reading the book end-to-end or in random bursts.
The guide, however, isn't without its drawbacks, one of which is Ambrose's constant reminders that, as a newcomer to this school of thought or a "Neophyte," as she calls it, the reader cannot possibly hope to obtain the full benefit of the teachings. Those reminders, coupled with equally plentiful caveats that the full-strength versions of the lessons can't be committed to paper, might leave the readers - especially those doubtful at the outset -- feeling as if excuses are being made should they fail to actualize the teachings in their own life.
Not that Ambrose is wrong to note that salvation - despite the overblown life-altering promise of the title - cannot be found in a book. Always, she makes it clear that she's written the guide as an entry into spiritual exploration and not complete encapsulation of what needs to be known. So even when that cautionary language verges on condescension, those searching for meaning could do worse than to pick up "Nine Life Altering Lessons." If nothing else, they will alter their outlook on ideology.
Life Lessons and Mystery SchoolsReview Date: 2008-02-28
This book explains about esoteric teachings and clarifies that the teachings are available to everyone, but especially those with an open mind and heart. There are many "pearls of wisdom" as the author mentioned, throughout the book that enlighten the reader and help to reveal the mysteries of the universe. I was very curious to find out what mystery schools were and also learned that I was a Neophyte, or a student who has just become aware that they may be more than what they previously considered themselves to be. The book is a pleasure to read, with beautiful language and a deep sense of calm and peace. A favorite quote of mine: "Some call me a teacher. I like to say I do not teach, rather I help souls remember who they are."

All of the Abby Hayes books are written in two kinds of print, black print and purple lettering. The black print is the author telling us the story and the purple lettering is Abby writing in journal. I love this series because I can relate to what she is going through. I think girls that keep journals would like this book a lot

Brisk read with a lot of heartReview Date: 2005-10-02
What you get is Another River, Another Town : A Teenage Tank Gunner Comes of Age in Combat-1945.
This is something different in the way of soldiers telling their tale. Here's a guy who got into the war when it was practically over, during the final few months of the European campaign, all post-Bulge. And he's a tank gunner. Most books of this sort are from the perspective of the grunt, and usually from guys who saw more "action" (which is not to say the author did not - his life was in grave danger on a number of occasions).
With Another River, Another Towns we get some insight into the mind of a soldier and a good glimpse at the life of a tank gunner during the last days of World War II, when the European Theater saw more surrendering and looting than actual combat. This isn't a "becoming buddies in the foxhole" book ... but it did have some merits, primarily in that it looked at a period of the war usually glossed over fairly quickly. Once you get past the Africa campaign, Sicily, D-Day and the Bulge, the European conflict becomes much less "sexy" from the American perspective. This book fills in some of those gaps and shows us what the soldiers experienced during this late period in the way.
It was not a melodramatic or sepia-toned book, which is a positive, and offered a glimpse into an aspect of World War II not often explored - the mass surrendering at the tail end of the conflict, and how the Army often did not want to deal with prisoners of war because they only served to slow down the advance. German soldiers intent on surrendering were often turned away.
Nothing here is vital reading, even for the WWII buff - it's a pretty typical soldier's tale, told simply - but I really enjoyed this glimpse into the world of the tank gunner and would certainly recommend this for a good Saturday read on the war. It had a lot of heart.

MisleadingReview Date: 2008-10-12
This book will be a classic for generations to come.Review Date: 2008-10-05
I had joined a yoga studio for several months when I first began in January of 2003. The teacher taught the yoga using blocks, chair, belt and the wall. It was a good start and I attended for 4 months, two to three times a week. Whatever I learned I practiced at home, sometimes twice or more a day. Even after I discontinued class, I kept up my practice several times a day. I derived tremendous benefits from the practice. I was healed of several serious ailments, known and unknown.
I had been using the standard yoga books, such as "Light on Yoga" by BKS Iyengar, "30 Essential Yoga Poses" by Lasater, and many many others. Not to mention many DVDs by various people of repute. I found that despite my dedicated and persistent efforts I was not making headway in my ability to acquire the more advanced asanas. It seemed that there were groups of muscles in my body that would not open no matter how earnestly I applied myself.
Then I came across this book. Specifically the first three chapters. The asanas in the frist three chapters constitute the Pawanmuktasana series. I have practiced them for a week, twice a day. My body and mind seemed to have ascended into another realm. These seemingly simple asanas have a PROFOUND effect on one's being. I am at a complete loss to describe their wonderful and deep benefits. Practice of this series has done more for me in the last week than all the numerous benefits I derived through my practice over the last nearly 6 years.
I am at a total loss to explain why the Pawanmuktasana series has not been written of in other books of yoga! It is a VERY POWERFUL series to bring about a total change in the physiology and mental patterns of a person. If I had known about this series sooner I would have become a very advanced practitioner by now.
However, nothing is lost due to the delay! I only hope that people who find themselves stuck in their practice and unable to make gains, would read this review and start to practice the Pawanmuktasana series! I cannot sufficiently applaud its power and benefits.
Also to be noted is the fact that this classic text is put out by the Bihar School of Yoga founded by a great Sage -- Swami Satyananda Saraswati. This school is perhaps the only school in the world that grants degrees in yoga -- bachelors, masters and PhDs. They are in the forefront of the research being conducted in the healing of diseases through the various yogic practices. The body of knowledge that has accumulated since its founding in 1964 has found its way into the contents of this book as well. It is not a book just put together in an amateurish manner. It is LOADED and AUTHENTIC!
If one practices the seemingly simple Pawanmuktasana series alone for a fortnight, he or she will become a brand new person! One will be astonished by the transformative powers of this seemingly simple series of asanas. Since it is the tendancy of the mind to associate power with complexity, it is only natural to think of this seemingly simple series to be ineffective. You will be TRULY surprised!
The discovery of the Pawanmuktasana series is the greatest discovery of my entire yoga practice over the last six years! Such is its power!
They have the capacity to open up the body and allow the flow of energy through it like few other asana practices. Once these have been practiced for a long time, I believe the other asanas should come naturally. I cannot say for certain, since I have only practiced the Pawanmuktasana series for a week. However, by extrapolating along the gains I have made in this short duration the foregoing claim is likely to be true.
I think most people who practice yoga, do want to make progress at every stage. No one will be content to just stay at the same level year after year. If that is the case with you, then I strongly advise you to purchase this book and practice the three chapters on Pawanmuktasana in earnest.
I would also like to recommend a DVD, if I may, for the practice of Pawanmuktasana series. This DVD is "Yog Science Part 1 & 2 Pranayam & Yog Asan" by Swami Ramdev ji. It is available through Amazon and other dealers through Amazon's site. After practicing this series through the book or the DVD, I assure you your practice will improve by leaps and bounds.
My search for "THE" book and DVD on yoga has finally come to an end :-)

What can one say about perfection?Review Date: 2007-02-27
The url above lists ALL Maud Hart Lovelace's books (including ones for grown-ups, some of which she even wrote along with "Joe"!). But of course the Betsy-Tacy series are for grown-ups, too! :-) I agree with everything everyone's written! Utter joie! What I love about these books is how boys and girls, and then young men and young women, HUNG OUT together (how Julia-of-the-thousand-beaus advises her sister Betsy not to hold a boy's hand because that was being "spooney"!). There is a kiss or two exchanged in this series, but don't tell anyone! How Julia's beau would give Betsy and her friends a dime to get rid of them! Ha ha! The PAIN of love is so well recounted, jealously, lessons learned -- remember how in highschool a few of the girls (Betsy the ringleader) form a "sorority" and how this cuts them off from people and the pain they suffer in this discovery? Remember the goatgirl, the Syrian Village...how they could roam their whole world, safe and free? What one reviewer said about rereading them and finding new gems each time... Ah, yes! Every true gem, when you turn it, dazzles with new sparkles. God bless Maud Hart Lovelace!
Look at the Wordsworth poem with which she chooses to set the very first book off ("Betsy Tacy"):
There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream,
The earth, and every common sight,
To me did seem
Apparell'd in celestial light,
The glory and the freshness of a dream
The first Betsy-Tacy book with TibReview Date: 2006-06-02
It quickly becomes apparent that Tib is more adventurous and free-spirited which gets Betsy and Tacy into heaps of trouble but what young girl didn't get into trouble at their age? "Betsy Tacy and Tib" is an equally wonderful follow up to this classic series. The introduction to Tib is well written and a real treat.
A Wonderful Book in a Great Series!Review Date: 2002-01-31
There are many great books in the series, this one in fact is not the first in the series. Check out the other books in the series, Betsy-Tacy, Betsy-Tacy Go Over the Big Hill, Betsy-Tacy Go Downtown, Heaven to Betsy, Betsy in Spite of Herself, Betsy was a Junior, Betsy and Joe, Betsy and the Great World, and Betsy's Wedding. The books take Betsy through grade school and high school, to Europe right before the 1st world war, then back to America for her wedding and the joys and troubles of married life. Some other books not in the Betsy-Tacy series but also by Maud Hart Lovelace and worth checking out are The Trees Kneel at Christmas, Winona's Pony Cart, Carney's House Party, and (my personal Maud Hart Lovelace favorite) Emily of Deep Valley.
