Christian Science is a bible based religion that believes that the things Jesus did were not miracles. He taught his followers to do what he did, and we believe that Christian Science is the explanation of the science, the demonstrable provable methods, that are available to anyone. Anyone can learn to do likewise, and to follow Jesus' example. This is the Christian Science textbook. If you are sincerely seeking answers, this is the best place to go. You'll want a copy of the King James Bible as well, because you'll be referred back to it frequently.

(...) Using words on a page in a book to describe completely un-material ideas about spiritual existence to you and me is a difficult thing for anyone to do. Couple that with the fact that the book's author is trying to essentially show the reader how to wake up to an unseen reality--to show, in the context of primitive Christianity (and not what might be called centuries of classical churchy dogma), that spiritual existence is real, and the material is not, and what that really means to you and me right now and always--and you begin to see how difficult writing a book like Science And Health must have been, or would be for anybody. It's quite a Big topic requiring much thought to understand and "use". A seeming repetition (with intelligent variations) in this book is vital. If you're trying to say "God, good, is All, and man and universe reflect him completely", and you're trying to teach this and show this to the matter-bound reader, you're gonna need more than that one sentence to make that challenging point. I'd say you'd need as many thought-provoking ways as possible, so if your eyes slide off some of the statements, others will perhaps be more understandable to you, and as you read you start to GET it. (...) read Science And Health for yourself and make up your own mind; read it on its own terms, because it has many things to say that you won't find anywhere else, and it says them quite articulately. If you find yourself glued to Dr. Dave on Oprah and reading Deepak, you might want to go deeper to the book that is acknowledged as starting the whole "healing" movement of the twentieth century that we are only now in the last few years seeing bubble up on TV. This one is the real deal and is here to stay.

The author, Mary Baker Eddy, was far ahead of her time in what she not only understood about God and mankind, but what she accomplished as a woman over 100 years ago. Other authors have attempted to discuss such ideas as what is real, what is illusion, what is God, Life, Truth, evil, good, etc. but have fallen short in the consistancy of their reasoning and conclusions. I find no contradictions here, only inspired thinking. I have actually had healings as a result of reading this book, and I recommend it to others regardless of religious affiliation.

This Edition Restores 2 Testimonies Removed after 1910

There are several things unique about the Aequus edition that are not apparent on their face. First, the editors of this edition sought to restore, as closely as possible, the last edition approved by the original author, Mary Baker Eddy, in her life time. In doing this, among other things, Aequus restore the drawing of Mrs. Eddy that was in that edition. Also, Aequus restored two testimonies, subsequently removed and replaced after Eddy's passing in 1910. Just as the Book started on a note of the coming of light into human thought, so also the last testimony was deliberatly approved by Eddy to end the entire book with the same theme of light. In fact, with the last testimony restored, the last word IS "light," which is exactly as Eddy intended it. She also intended that the last page be a full page. David Keyston and Aequus are to be commended for this courageous and noble undertaking in true Christian education. My hat goes off to them!!

This is one of those books that seems to have a life of its own. As part of my quest for deeper spiritual insight, I have been reading Science and Health for about 8 years, and every single time I open it, there is something new in there! For the reader unfamiliar with Christian Science, Eddy lays out a method for healing the way that Jesus healed--through oneness of mind with our Father, God. For those wondering what the difference is between Christian Science and other Christian denominations or New Age religions, the great divide between CS and all other systems is the idea that the entire universe was created by God, Spirit, and is therefore totally spiritual, not material. All other theologies, including atheism, make the universe either totally material, or a mixture of spirit and matter. While many people (including me) have been healed of ailments while reading this book as their thought is adjusted to be more in line with the laws of Spirit, I have found the primary effect to be one of complete transformation of character--I am more my Father's girl than ever.

Excellet recount of experience and most enjoyable, written with inteligence and sense of humor. This book gave me a sheer sense of living "vicariously" through the author's varied experiences. I found it to be full of anectdotes and an honest retelling of a very rich and rewarding personal story. It is sure to please people of all ages and backgrounds.

This well written memoir is a must read. It is frank, funny and filled with amazing insights into the life of a middle-aged woman. I did question her reasons for staying in an Arab country but in the end was happy she remained. The author catches hold of your interest from page one and leaves you wanting a sequel at the end of her story. It is a quick read and guaranteed to hold your interest. I highly recommend it.

"Shalom in my heart, salaam on my lips" - dieses Buch ist ein wirklich sagenhafter Reisebericht.

It is an easy to read book, yet it is totally compelling, each chapter drawing the reader onward into the next. I recommend it highly.

I have a few books that I will never part with and which I read over and over again - Testimony of Two Men is one of these books. It is also on my recommended reading list to friends and family. Every few months I check to see if the mini-series has "finally" been released on VHS or preferably on DVD. This is a terrific book and worth the time spent reading it. Enjoy.

I first read this book some 30 years ago and I just reread this book for the first time in many years. I remember now why I have often said if I were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one book with me, "Testimony of Two Men" would be that book.

I read a LOT by many good and well-known contemporary authors but today's authors write BOOKS.....Ms. Taylor wrote literature.

Taylor Caldwell had a gift of testing the depths of despair that the human soul can endure and in Testimony of Two Men, the story of brilliant physician Jonathan Ferrier, she outdid herself. A brutally honest man, Jon Ferrier is at war with the people he was trained to -- and is still driven to - - heal. In her introduction, Taylor Caldwell said that she wrote the story in testimony to the brilliant physicians who brought us kicking and screaming into the twentieth century, physicians who were seen as prophets by some and madmen by others. Through all of his travails weaves Jonathan's love for the beautiful and tempestuous Jenny, who rescues him from absolute self-destruction. Read it.

On my LITERARY LIFE LESSONS personal library shelf

There are few books I deem worthy to stand on a place on my LITERARY LIFE LESSONS book shelf in my own personal library in my house, and this is one of them.
I first read this book when I was 15, and have re-visited it ever since. I learn something different each time I read it, and so it remains on my esteemed library shelf.
There are so many lessons one can learn from the words of this author - she was send by God's literary angels to help us who struggle to understand the great mystery of Life with their peek into a smidgeon of The Great Understanding of Life. Throwing in pieces of factual tidbits throughout the story of what life was like for the 20th century medical professional (??) is an added bonus for those interested in history. And, of course, she remains true to the sharing of how difficult it was simply to be born female before and at the first half of the 20th century. I pray all of us women will band together to provide the support and strength of spirit that only those with curves can possibly understand. I'm tired of the "race card" crap being touted by women. We are women. That, to me, is the ultimate way to celebrate (and mourn) this life, as we create life by just being who we are. To me, woman supercedes mere "race." No matter our skin color, type of hair texture, and shape of eyes: we suffer the same on the insides, where we are all the same colors.
For men:
Those who read this novel will gain a valuable key to unlock a deeper understanding of the female entity.
Read and learn.

This book and its mini-series (with David Birney, Laurie Prange and Linda Purl) is so richly-textured with mystery, romance, medical crisis, the family dynasty and the behind-the scenes situations of a hospital at the turn of the century (1900+) that it is nothing short of a beautiful and exquisite epic.
PLEASE, whoever owns the rights to the movie, "You would make a fortune selling this movie (VHS/DVD) to a very loyal fan base. And once it was available, more and more would sell!" - This book is a classic and its matching movie DESERVES to see the light of day once more on VHS/DVD!

This is the best Action Figure guide I have ever seen. It is very informative and very accurate, the author even adds his personal take on most of the figures. And talk about bringing back old memories. I actually bought this book for nostalgic purposes and was very pleased. It was nice seeing all the old Transformers from the 80's in one piece. Makes me wish I knew what happened to all my old ones, man I'd be rich if I would have taken better care of them. Hope Mark Bellomo does a guide book for the rest of the Transformers. If you are looking for the ultimate 80's Transformers Action Figure guide, this is it!

I had heard good things about this author, and this guide, from reviews at other Transformer sites, so I bought it (it was also being sold for half price at amazon.com when I bought it). It was well worth every penny! It is very thorough and gives great details on each type of Transformer and each of the "lines of Transformers" that were made up to 1990. Each Transformer is also given approximate prices for what they are worth as well. Granted, the prices will change over time, but this guide will still be a worthy identification reference for a very long time.
I would have given it a 5, but there were quite a few grammatical errors in the book, but it won't affect your ability to understand the information.
My favorite part of the book is that the author appears to have had fun writing it, but takes it seriously enough to make it a very thorough reference guide. A must have for any Transformer fan, from beginner to expert!

WOW, brings back the memories.

This is great reference guide. It shows all the Generation 1 Transformers (84-90). It shows all the pieces and a bio of each character. It also shows the value.
As kid I had over 50 of the originals and they are worth a ton of money. I use this book as a guide to purchasing used transformers at Ebay.
I wish he would come out of with with a volume 2 (92-07) which would show all the generation 2, Beastwars, Alternators, Universe,Cybertron, 07 movie, and classics. Which I think are better than generation 1.
Awsome book. I reconmend this book to all collectors.
Also check out the G.I Joe guide.

A Dynamite Masterful Commentary on Psalms
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-03
In his observation of the organizing principle of the Tanakh, whereby Westerman concludes (Elements of an Old Testament Theology, 1982) that the general theme of Torah being the deeds of God, and Nevi'im (The Prophets) being the words of God, he rightly describes Ketuvim (The Writings) under which Psalms fall, as the people's responses, or I should say, God-inspired people responses; covering the entire range of expressions of human emotions; fear, desperation, faith, hope, compassion, love, submission, indignation, repentance, sorrow, joy, and praise; the reality of life in a fallen world. Spurgeon laboriously and masterfully unearths these jewels from the rich treasure chests of David that the readers may enjoy, adore, cherish, worship, and love God in the display of his grace, power and glory through these expressions with solid theology, Christology and soteriology in mind because in some of the Psalms; Psalms 2, 8, 22, 45, 102, and 110, for examples, they undoubtedly speak of vision about the Lord Jesus Christ. If the readers are familiar with the format JC Ryle used in "Expository Thoughts on the Gospel," Spurgeon implements a similar one. He begins with introducing the theme of each Psalms, then continues with verse-by-verse exposition that attempts to bring the readers as close as possible to the affections, the state of mind and the vision of the Psalmist when he wrote that particular verse. In the next section called "Explanatory notes and quaint sayings", he includes commentary for each verse, though may not be exhaustive but definitely extensive, from other theologians; mostly the Reformers and the Puritans. The last part called "Hints to Preachers" consists of outlines to aid ministers for preaching purposes. Here are some samples to show the style of exposition the readers would be benefited from, intended to wet their appetite and to support my recommendation:

"Proud hearts breed proud looks and stiff knees. It is an admirable arrangement that the heart is often written on the countenance...A brazen face and a broken heart never go together... there is much more to be learned from the motions of the muscles of the face than from the words of the lips. Honesty shines in the face, but villainy peeps out at the eyes. See the effect of pride; it kept the man from seeking God. It is hard to pray with a stiff neck and an unbending knee. `God is not in all his thoughts' he thought much but he had no thoughts for God. Amid heaps of chaff there was not a grain of wheat. The only place where God is not is in the thoughts of the wicked. This is a damning accusation; for where the God of heaven is not, the Lord of hell is reigning and raging; and if God be not in our thoughts, our thoughts will bring us to perdition" (on Ps 10:4).

"This prayer evinces a humble sense of personal ignorance, great teachableness of spirit, and cheerful obedience of heart... A path is here desired which shall be open, honest, straightforward, in opposition to the way of the cunning which is intricate, tortuous, dangerous. Good men seldom succeed in fine speculations and doubtful courses; plain simplicity is the best spirit for an heir of heaven: let us leave shifty tricks and political expediences to the citizens of the world, the New Jerusalem owns plain men for its citizens" (on Ps 27:11).

"The unusual strength which overleaps the bound of threescore and ten only lands the aged man in a region where life is a weariness and a woe. The strength of old age, its very prime and pride, are but labor and sorrow; what must its weakness be? What panting for breath! What toiling to move! What a failing of the senses! What a crushing sense of weakness!... Such as is old age. Yet mellowed by hallowed experience, and solaced by immortal hopes, the latter days of aged Christians are not so much to be pitied as envied. The sun is setting and the heat of the day is over, but sweet is the calm and cool of the eventide; and the fair day melts away, not into a dark and dreary night, but into a glorious, unclouded eternal day. The mortal fades to make room for the immortal; the old man falls asleep to wake up in the region of perennial youth" (on Ps 90:10).

"It is impossible that any ill should happen to the man who is beloved of the Lord; the most crushing calamities can only shorten his journey and hasten him to his reward. Ill to him is no ill, but only good in a mysterious form. Losses enrich him, sickness is his medicine, reproach is his honor, death is his gain. No evil in the strict sense of the word can happen to him, for everything is overruled for good" (on Ps 91:10).

"A survey of the solar system has a tendency has a tendency to moderate the pride of man and to promote humility. Pride is one of the distinguishing characteristics of puny man and has been one of the chief causes of all the contentions, wars, devastations, systems of slavery, and ambitious projects which have desolated and demoralized our sinful world. Yet there is no disposition more incongruous to the character and circumstance of man. Perhaps there are no rational beings throughout the universe among whom pride would appear more unseemly or incompatible than in man, considering the situation in which he is placed. He is exposed to numerous degradations and calamities, to the rage of storms and tempests, the devastations of earthquakes and volcanoes, the fury of whirlwinds, and the tempestuous billows of the ocean, to the ravages of the sword, famine, pestilence, and numerous diseases; and at length he must sink into the grave and his body must become the companion of worms! The most dignified and haughty of the sons of men are liable to these and similar degradations as well as the meanest of the human family. Yet, in such circumstances, man, that puny worm of the dust, whose knowledge is so limited, and whose follies as so numerous and glaring, has the effrontery to strut in all the haughtiness of pride, and to glory in his shame.

When other arguments and motives produce little effect on certain minds, no considerations seem likely to have a more powerful tendency to counteract this deplorable propensity in human beings, than those which are borrowed from the objects connected with astronomy. They show us what an insignificant being, what a mere atom, indeed, man appears amidst the immensity of creation!

Though he is an object of the paternal care and mercy of the Most High, yet he is but as a grain of sand to the whole earth, when compared to the countless myriads of beings [in the universe]" (on Ps 8:3-4, quoting Dr. Dick).

"Communion with God in secret is a heaven upon earth. What food can compare with the hidden manna? Some persons have excellent banquet in their closets. That bread which the saints eat in secret, how pleasant is it! Ah! What stranger can imagine the joy, the melody, which even the secret tears of the saints cause! Believers find rich mines of silver and gold in solitary places; they fetch up precious jewels out of secret holes, out of the bottom of the ocean, where are no inhabitants... Saints have often sweet joy and refreshment in secret; they have meat to eat, which the world knows not of... They that know what it is to enjoy God in secret, would not leave it or lose it, to be kings or commanders over the whole world" (on Ps 63:6, quoting George Swinnock).

Can't go wrong with Spurgeon. I bought these volumes for a deeper study of the Psalms, and so far they have been amazing. There's more for each psalm that I can really get in to, but that which I do has been all that I could hope for: reinforcing lower view of self next to high view of God; the only kind of perspective that brings any real sense of hope and encouragement.

This is a great commentary series on the Psalms and has the same feel as Spurgeon's sermons. Great resource for any teacher and pastor to prepare in study for the Psalms. Very detailed, which I can't say the same for other commentaries done during this same time period.

The price once again shows how many people have lost interest in both commentaries and our past church saints.

If you are going to be going through the Psalms in your own study or teaching you should definitely have this at your disposal.

This is indeed a holistic approach. I have been with horses for over forty years and I have read so many new ideas about our relationship with horses. It is an honest book of an honest man, concerned with the wellfare of horse and human. I am sad I have not read this book 30 years earlier (it was not published then). My horses would have deserved it and my relationship with them would have been all the better for it.

After reading several other books from trainers and horseman, I found Sam's book, wow! What a find. Sam has put into words what few other horseman can and in away that all will understand. Having worked with horses since he was a young man has given him wisdom to help both horse and man. His simple manner in which he uses in his book allows the reader to get the most from reading his book. I have learned more from his book than any other book, magazine or video I have reviewed. He has helped me to understand the horse form a perspective I never knew possible. This will be a book you will want to read over and over. This book has something for everyone that loves his or her horse. From the beginner to the advanced professional, you will learn a way of communicating that actually works. Communication that will open your eye to a new world for both horse and person, ENJOY!

I have always wanted horses since I was a small child, growing up with my Uncle's horses. There has always been a connection between me and horses. I just purchased two of the most beautiful Arabian horses, later in life. My little boy has been abused and is 4 years old and is in training. When I purchased him, you couldn't get close to him and put a halter on him, and now he follows me arround and wants to be right next to me. My little girl is 2 and has always been loved and is really sweet. I spent two weeks bonding with my little boy and we have such love and communication between us that he is a different horse and really trust me. I bought this book and realize that as a novice, I did the wrong thing of buying 2 green horses. I felt something when I saw them and knew that we were ment to be together. I will tell you that I could not put this book down until I finished it. I realized all the things I was doing wrong....and all the things that I was doing right. I love my horses so much and they know it as soon as they see me. I would really like to meet Sam someday and learn more from him. I highly reccommend this book to everyone. I know that I should of bought older, and trained horses, but the love I have for my beautiful babies grows everyday. I know I need to learn....and I belive in Sam's way of training. I know I will be alot more wiser in what I do now....but I have patience and hope I will be a good partner and companion to the two best horses in the world.

I had bought this book originally as a good all around read, but ended up needing a lot of its valuable information when I purchased a gelding at an auction. Something just made my hand go up, even though the horse reared in the ring. I thought I had brought home a mistake until I went back and started to re-read Mr. Powell's book. I even e-mailed him at his address for additional help. Needless to say, 18 months later, this horse is the friendliest, most willing-to-please horse in our pasture. The potential I saw him at the auction has come full circle thanks to the wisdom in Mr. Powell's book. Thanks Sam! This is a must read for all horse people!

I purchased this book to help me in reading the Hebrew words and recognition of the letters. Some letters are easily recognized as other than they are. Rabbi Munk's explanations of the stories behind the letters are interesting and helpful in learning some aspects of the Hebrew culture. This is a wonderful book. A "keeper" and good reference.

This is a great buy for any one interested in learning what it takes to become a celebrity assistant. I read this book as research material for a film project and it was eye-opening to learn just how valuable the roles high-profile assistants play maintaining the lives of their employers. You don't have to work for a celebrity to use the tools this book provides. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in becoming an assistant, want to be a better assistant, or even if you want great tips on managing your own life more effectively, this book is loaded with great tips from the pros.

Bonnie Low Kramen's book has become a valuable resource for me as an executive assistant in a high-profile investment firm. Bonnie's style of writing is one that makes you feel like you are sitting across the table from her, enjoying lunch and a chat while she reveals her secrets to success as an assistant. I have read the book in its entirety more than once and still pick it up often to read different sections, each time getting something new out of the book. Bonnie writes with poise and grace, which is obviously indicative of how she handles herself as one of the best celebrity assistants out there. This book is a must have resource for anyone who wants to excel as an assistant!

I own a search firm which specializes exclusively in recruiting Executive and Personal Assistants who are at the very top of their profession! I have been in this search specialty for well over 25 years.

Bonnie Low Kramen has written a much needed and delightfully entertaining book which shares her secrets to high level success as a top Executive/Personal Assistant. In spite of Bonnie's own great professional success and celebrity window on the world, she writes with humility, humor, and a warm and engaging style.

I have purchased many copies of the book to give to placed candidates. These are Executive and Personal Assistants who are all at the very top of their game. They have loved the book and..so have I!!

An excellent resource for assistants in any industry.

Thanks to the knowledge I gained from the book - nine months into my new job I received an excellent performance review as an executive assistant and also as a personal assistant to a high-powered executive and his spouse. I especially liked the entertaining examples for creative problem solving and exploring options for pulling off miracles. I learned how to prepare for "whatever it takes moments" - and it worked. I saved the day for my employer when he was late for a plane. I loved the challenge. Be The Ultimate Assistant reminds us, "You don't get if you don't ask." I called the airport and asked if they could open up a few more security lines as the lines were really long and my employer was running late and might miss his flight. The lady I was talking to said she would see what she could do. The next email I received was from my employer telling me, "Never mind about the next flight, they opened up more lines." I just smiled and emailed back - "Yes, I know, I just talked to them." He emailed back - "You're a Star!" The resources in the book are worth the cost of the book alone. I love learning from the success of others -- enjoy the read.

This book is meant for scholars or students looking to translate Bhagavad Gita and have a reference point for those difficult verses. There is nothing more to the book than an intro., and the Gita translated word for word. Even the verses themselves cannot be found whole. That is not to say that this isn't an excellent book. I have another similar book but he has some different opinions on the names: winthrop's Gudakesha- "thick haired one" but the other guy says: Gudakesha- "conquerer of sleep" This also happens with Hrishikesha: (don't quote me on this one) "spiny haired one" and the other guy writes Hrishikesha: "conquerer of the senses" I'm leaning toward the other guy (forgive me for not having the name) because the rest of the "nicknames" refer to past achievements and such. So, if you want to learn sanskrit and you're ready for the Gita this will be excellent, or if you're memorizing verses and want to know the exact meaning behind them, this is for you.

Best translation of Bhagavad Gita!

I have read over a dozen translations of Bhagavad Gita over the past 25 years. IMHO, this is the best English translation. The "inter-liner" translation is really a neat idea and I wish someone does inter-liner translations for other ancient works such as Thiru-Kural.

The book is a translation from Sanskrit to English. Excellent if that is what you are looking. However, if you are looking for interpretation or an understanding of what it means then better buy some other book like the Bhagavad-Gita As It Is by A. C. Bhaktivedanta. Some may call it biased, but I think it is better for a new reader.

An excellent interlinear translation.

This is an excellent interlinear translation. For each word, Sargeant gives grammatical information, like gender, case and number. Then each verse has an idiomatic translation to English which is very faithful to the original. Some verses also have a commentary - very useful. There is also an introduction describing the contents of the Mahabharata, of which the Bhagavad Gita is a part. One thing missing is an index, therefore I would recommend buying also Schweig's or Easwaran's translation.
