As Continental forces and Virginia militia units were engaged in winning independence, American quartermasters and provisioners struggled to provide these units with all the necessities of life, from meals and guns to meat, fodder for horses, the horses themselves, firewood, and every other type of material. Much of this was requisitioned from the civilian population and certificates were issued payable in either continental or state funds, depending on the units supplied, upon presentation to court authorities. Thousands of these certificates issued to Virginians were duly entered by the courts, and they provide a fascinating insight into the period of the Revolution. These "Publick" Claims booklets contain interesting and useful information about the contributions of ordinary people to the Revolutionary War. They provide some details of people's service in the militia or as guards for prisoners of war; they indicate where some bodies of troops were at particular times; and they identify providers of horses, wagons, cattle, grain, or other supplies. Much of the information in these booklets cannot be found anywhere else, which makes the surviving records particularly valuable. Also remarkable is the fact that records survived from virtually every county in the state at that time with the exception of the newly formed Kentucky counties. This makes the collection even more valuable in covering areas which heretofore in this time period have suffered from a lack of personal data. The "Virginia Publick Claims" are published by counties. In addition to a faithful transcription by Janice Luck Abercrombie and the late Richard Slatten, a complete index is provided for each county booklet. This series is an extremely important genealogical tool for searchers in Revolutionary-era materials.

Aching Heart-Burning Soul: Surviving Catholicism is the straightforward and intimate memoir of Virginia A. Ward. Readers are provided with an autobiographically based exploration of the Catholic church in America today, from the strong memories of growing up amidst dogma, to repercussions of how human views on infallibility affect the Church itself to this very day. An amazingly thoughtful, detailed, and intriguing discussion, Aching Heart-Burning Soul is highly recommended reading -- especially for anyone concerned with the contemporary social issues and public scandals involving the Catholic church.

I found this to be an excelllent book. It lights the way to activation of the God within us. Reading the book is a very moving experience and going though the yoga postures, although a challange, can be very rewarding, if done on a regular basis. I recommend this book to all who are willing to make the effort to futher themselves on their spiritual path.

Although a little unwieldy (after all, it does cover quite a large area) this map book is indispensable to anyone needing to find their way around within the Richmond area. I've been using ADC maps for 20 years and have never seen a better product line.

I have bought these maps for years. I have a Factory installed GPS and it is always a comfort to know that I have this map with me. Their is nothing worse in sales to be late for an appointment and when the GPS is not as up to date as your map this comes in pretty handy.

A great book for a quick teaching workshop

I was asked to put together a "continuing education" course for community college instructors, and this book came in very handy. I passed it over when we were planning the curriculum for a degree program because it is too general and covers too much ground. However, for a fast-paced introduction to teaching post-secondary classes, this is the book you want.

I was tempted to gather free materials and avoid a text for the continuing ed course, but participants find it very handy to have a text to refer to later. And, it is much easier to hand off the course to another instructor if a text is available.

This text isn't for every purpose, but I gave it five stars for my purpose of getting college instructors up to speed as quickly as possible before they enter the classroom. The table of contents is a ready-made list of the topics I need to cover.

Invaluable digest of Nigeriaýs business activity

Professor Tom Forrest's The Advance of African Capital: The Growth of Nigerian Private Enterprise provides a detailed and extensive account of medium- and large-scale African business. Up-to-date and comprehensive, it examines the growth of private enterprise in Nigeria, giving profiles of the country's key entrepreneurs.

Combining ethnographic and historical perspectives, Forrest examines the strategies and patterns of development employed by businesspeople from the colonial period to the present. Through a series of highly readable case studies, he provides a broad picture of the Nigerian private enterprise's forms of capital accumulation and advances in trade, transport, manufacture, agriculture, finance, and other services. The case studies are set within the context of changing economic opportunities, shifts in power and policy, relations with foreign capital, and attitudes toward private business and the state.

Not only an invaluable digest of Nigeria's business activity, Forrest's study also challenges the existing views about African enterprise and is highly relevant to policymakers concerned with economic development.

This is an absolutely wonderful story. My 5 year old daughter wants to read it over and over again. It provides a positive father/child image. The illustrations are beautiful. The story talks about various countries in Africa and their particular specialty (i.e. basket weaving/kente cloth, etc.) The story is told in such a way that even young children can easily remember and associate the places and tribes in Africa with their trades. It also has a beautiful picture in the back of the continent of Africa that lends itself well for copying to use in discussions about geography.

My 5 year old received this book when she was 3 years old and we still enjoy reading it as do her friends at school.
