This book never told the truth
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-16
This book was slanted to create confusion. The truth behind this incident was never fully disclosed to the public. Yes, Mr. Tarkanian is a great coach, but the picture that prompted the entire deal was never about him. The reason why the picture appeared in the public is a greater story than you could ever imagine, and no one thought of asking the right questions. Mr.Yaeger missed many of the facts with his own interpretation of reality, but that's what a scandel is all about? Some day the true story will be told!

I enjoyed this book, mainly because I am a fan of Jerry Tarkanian. I would read this again because I found it enjoyable. I did not live in Vegas while Tark was there, so I can't verify if it's truthful or not, but it is a good read.

Comprehensive is the Word !!!

Comprehensive is right, tells you things the others don't, user friendly, not a lot of coded abbreviations to look up. Pop the CD in the lap top, search the city and you are there. All you need now is a road map and a cell phone Book has lots of handy phone numbers and all the information you'll need about where you are going. Don't have a lap top, then get the book its a must have!

The USA Comprehensive Public Camping Guide

I just received Volume's 1 and 2 today (Washington/Oregon and California/Nevada today, and am returning them tomorrow. They are the worst camping resources I have ever seen. Literally they are nothing more than alpha lists of public campgrounds organized by state with a handful of low res JPEG images thrown in, all in a Word document. The two that I bought were two megabits and four megabits respectively in total size. They could have put all ten volumes on a single CD and had room left over for a listing of every retaurant, gas station, and parts store in America. Amazing that someone else rated this five stars; I can only assume it was the author or a friend of the author.

As a CD ROM, I naturally assumed that this would be an interactive version of a book. Not a chance, it's just text, and the pages scroll down the screen with two pages per screen, except that it's not even formatted to fit a normal screen, so you have to scroll down to finish a page, and then scroll back up to start the opposing page. The information contained therein is just publicly available facts that could be obtained from numerous government websites, all without editorial comment or useful descriptions. I don't know why Amazon would even carry this product, or if they feel they have to carry everything, they should at least give you a warning.

Too old to be relevant -- a 1992 book with a new title

I was a great fan of this author's 1992 book titled 'All Right,OK, You Win,' which was an insightful and well-written overview of theStrip. When I saw this book, 'Welcome to the Pleasuredome,' I hoped for an update of all that has happened on the Strip since 1992. Imagine my dismay when I discovered it's the exact same book as 'All Right, OK, You Win,' with a different cover and a different title. END

Although I patronize neither casinos nor brothels, Spanier's book was fascinating reading for me. He takes his reader inside the back rooms of casinos, explaining how they can afford to give away freebies to their best customers, how they draw new families, and the future of Las Vegas. He puts the story of the Nevada city into a historical context, explaining how it blossomed from a railroad outpost a few decades ago into the major destination it is today. He concludes by speculating about the effect of competition, including nearby Laughlin, state lotteries, and Atlantic City. This book will not disappoint.

Here is a somewhat fanciful look at the life of Warren Nelson. Mr. Nelson had a superb career in the Nevada gaming industry, and his life story is fun, easy reading. His account of his experiences as a partner at the Club Cal Neva and Palace Club are good reading.

I though this book would bring a factual tale of the history of this area. But what I found was a collection of questionable "facts" brought together in a somewhat haphazard manner with directions to "points of interest" that made me wonder if the author had ever been there in the first place. Not a total loss, but missed the point

Study of Injustice in Nevada

Review Date: 2006-12-10
On April 1, 1966 Pete Guyette and his wife were arrested in Elkhorn Indiana. Pete was picked up on a year old traffic warrant. After he was in custody though they started questioning him about a double murder in Nevada. Using a very common trick with his wife-- they told her that he had confessed and was blaming her. She was told she had to implicate him if she did not want to be charged as an accessory. (It's perfectly legal to lie to someone during an interrogation.) Pete Guyette was 19, his wife was 17.

As a result of this and other prosecutorial shenanigans, Guyette found himself convicted and sent to prison. He was released in 1972 on a Writ of Habeas Corpus.

I gave this book 3 stars because the author lacks some writing skills, however it is worth reading for the detailed picture of the justice system in the mid 60's with regard to this particular case that it paints. Guyette also has a web site where he talks about his case.

Answering The Call To Write

We are a freshmen English class in college who are using this book in our English 101 class. We haven't finished using the book yet, but so far it has been helpful in writing specific papers such as memoirs, profiles, and reviews. It gives examples of each of the genres of papers and then further gives specific information of what makes a good paper in that genre. It also suggests ways to go about writing one of these types of genres. One of the main focuses is on the revision process which is helpful because many people have trouble revising papers. The tone is easy to understand. We like that it is geared towards real world writing but we would have liked to see more creative writing tools such as poetry, fantasy, sci-fi, etc. We also would like to see broader examples like student essays that are easier for us to relate to. Overall, we think it's good for use in a classroom with a teacher but it would be difficult to learn from alone.

How to appreciate the natural side of Nevada
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-17
Living in Arizona, my home is the Sonoran Desert. Even desert haters begrudgingly find a place in their hearts for the Sonoran, land of majestic saguaros and abundant sandstone. Nevada on the other hand, has a much smaller fan club. That's a shame since I've always cherished my adventures in the Silver State. In "Earthtones: A Nevada Album," Ann Ronald shares an idea that any Nevada enthusiast has always known, even if on a subconscious level. Nevada is beautiful, but not in a conventional way. To appreciate the Great Basin and Mojave Deserts, the adventurer must undefine green as the definition of beauty in nature. An appreciation of the Silver State requires an appreciation of vast open spaces, sage and of course earthtones. As an avid backpacker and off-roader, Ann Ronald has traveled extensively from the Southern Triangle to the Idaho border. Indeed, the author is well qualified to write such a book in terms of her backcountry experience and research. Ann Ronald shares her experiences in places like the Ruby Mountains, Great Basin National Park, Valley of Fire, the Black Rock Desert and the Test Site. The author does some interesting comparisons. Lake Mead is compared to Pyramid Lake while Pahranagat is compared to the Ruby Marshes. While the focus is the natural side of Nevada, the author carefully describes the impact of humans on the land. "Earthtones" doesn't read like a monograph or a travel guide; it is a collection of essays that sometimes read like a journal. As one might expect in a desert diary, the focus can meander and ramble. Stephen Trimble's photographs loosely illustrate the book. Whether geologic close-ups or large landscapes, his images effectively illustrate Ronald's text. In the end, this book is sure make readers re-think what they believe about nature in the Great Basin and Mojave. It is also certain to inspire a few road trips to the Silver State. "Earthtones" has inspired me to make plans for my next adventure!

By the way, this is not the official Amazon entry for this book. Instead, visit "Earthtones: A Nevada Album." At the time of review, used copies of the book were available on the official page for under $5.00, which is a great deal compared to the $40.00 that it was going for on this page.
