Whether or not you've ever had the often discombobulating experience of living abroad, this book is a terrific read. Short,
warmly written chapters capture the fish-out-of-water feelings of cultural adaptation. (The author's an American living
in Switzerland.) From "Toopervare" parties to ski slopes, she describes her reactions and dual perspectives with humor,
understanding, and honesty. Terrific!

This series of books are interesting to read and have beautiful pictures and maps. They are wonderful for armchair travel
and to help in planning a trip as they give a wonderful overview of the history, culture and most interesting places to visit
of the areas they represent. There is no detail as to lodging or restuarants so this is not the guide if that's what you're
looking for, but I have enjoyed them and packed them on trips for help in planning sightseeing excursions and to help me understand
and appreciate the history and culture of the places I'm visiting. They have enriched my travel experience.

Why insulin is *not* simple!

I've used insulin for 50 years, since I was a kid.
It took me 40 years to finally figure out that none of my doctors really had a clue on what is/isn't good insulin.
When you get it, this book doesn't look like much; paperback and not very long (82 pages). It is crammed with useful info.
For what it's worth, as far as i know, all synthetic insulin uses beef product in the production process. Something that was finally seen/dug-out 5/6 years ago by long term type-1 diabetics like me, at the European web site, similar to the US FDA web site.
The one other book on insulin that I recommend is the now out of print (?) book by Jens Brange's 1987 "Galenics of Insulin" which has Table 16/p.59 time of storage of insulin preparations at various temperatures until biological potency is reduced by 2% and 5% respectively
I believe that these are all (?) "human" insulins as beef and pork appear (to me) to be either named directly or ref'd as "monocomponent".
Another question is what brands were used for the SL (SemiLente) and L (Lente) and UL(UltraLente)?
As far as I know, Actrapid and Rapitard are Novo. One other point worth mentioning is that prior to '87 Novo's "human" insulin was semi-synthetic and not rDNA.
Insulin-prep 4° C 15° C 25° C 40° C
Actrapid 36 / 92 yrs 5 / 13 yrs 12 / 31 months 5 / 14 weeks
Semilente 45 / 115 yrs 4 / 11 yrs 7 / 18 months 2 / 5 weeks
Lente 36 / 91 yrs 3 / 9 yrs 5 / 14 months 1 / 4 weeks
Rapitard 22 / 55 yrs 3 / 8 yrs 7 / 17 months 3 / 7 weeks
Ultralente 19 / 48 yrs 2 / 5 yrs 4 / 10 months 1 / 3 weeks

I found this book very interesting and captivating. Once I began reading it, I could not put it down. The author, Jennifer
Cook, does an excellent job of drawing the reader into the story. Although this book is intended for a younger audience,
I enjoyed it immensely and I'm 53 years old. It held my curiosity and interest until the very end. It is an action packed
adventure in which the young people play roles equal to their parents. The setting of the fall of Tehran and the return of
the Ayatolah Komeini to lead the revolution is based on historical fact and is developed in an interesting and entirely approachable
way for young readers. With her impeccable research, Ms. Cook introduces the reader to aspects and interpretations of Iranian
history that I, for one, had never known existed. I strongly recommend this book for people of any age. Congratulations
to Jennifer Cook and I hope she writes another book soon.

Jan Tschichold, Designer: The Penguin Years is a seminal and impressive contribution to the history of publishing with its
focus on Jan Tschichold and his influence with respect to the typographic revolution that was applied to Penguin's mass production
of books for the general populace. Author Richard B. Doubleday (Assistant Professor of Art, Department of Graphic Design,
College of Fine Arts, Boston University) brings a special research-based expertise to providing an historical and analytical
survey of Tschichold's contributions during the mid to late 1940s that saw the emergence of a wide ranging Penguin Book Series
that included both fiction and non-fiction. Many of Tschichold's preliminary hand drawn cover and title page designs are made
public for the first time in order to demonstrate and document his meticulous attention to detail and the development of his
`New Typography'. Enhanced with the inclusion of an extensive bibliography on Tschichold's writings and historical appendices
of his inter-office memoranda and texts, "Jan Tschichold, Designer" is a significant addition to academic library collections
on the history of publishing, and an especially recommended for students and non-specialist general readers with an interest
in typography, book design, and the publishing industry.

Heidi Violand-Hobi's monograph on the artist, Jean Tinguely, is a perfect introduction for those unfamiliar with the scope
of his work, and a good reference for those who know his work well. It is an easier read than Pontus Hulten's important "A
Magic Stronger Than Death," and continues the discussion of Tinguely's work beyond the mid-1980s where Hulten's book ends.
Early photographs of Tinguely's window displays are especially pertinent as are the personal photographs throughout. Prestel
knows how to put together an impressive art book. Most of the major works are covered, but there is room for additional scholarship
on this important international artist who goes largely unappreciated in America.

Not only is this book an informative view at Josef Muller-Brockmann, it's beautiful enough to display. We've really enjoyed
the series, including OTl Aicher, Max Huber. Because they're all the same size and thickness, we display them together. Phaidon
does it right.

Jung, My Mother and I

This book is a breakthrough in the category of books about Jung. Based on the careful notes of her analysis, handed to her
daughter during the last of her life, Katy Cabot depicts a human, warm, gossipy side to the great psychologist. The result
is an example of how he adapted himself to a young extraverted American ex-patriate socialite who sincerely wanted to grow.
The plight of her young and only child [the author] is told with remarkable restraint, given the lack of concern of the mother,
as she traveled from hotel to hotel and country to country. We get glimpses of that child's perception of Jung, as well and
she grew up to become a Jungian analyst herself. Fascinating glimpses into Jung's opinions of his wife, Toni Wolf, and the
many members of the Analytical Psychology Club in Zurich in the 30's and 40's! A super book.
