Understanding compassion fatigue

As a social worker and educator, I highly recommend this fantastic book. The author clearly explains the many ways in which helpers are at risk for compassion fatigue and burnout due to the intensity of their work lives. He also provides many useful tips for preventing burnout. This is a very infomative and practical resource. I use it frequently to inform my own teaching of compassion fatigue, vicarious traumatization, and burnout issues.

This book is indeed practical in its application and theoretical enough to be able to us it as a text book for students. I recommend it for professionals and students who are in any type of helping industry in order to be informed of the very real risks involved to one's own health and welfare when giving so much of ourselves to others. This book is sorely needed in the areas of church ministry where there is a great emphasis on helping our fellow man but often pastors and lay workers are burnt out through lack of know how and knowledge to care for themselves because of the high demands of their congregations. Although not intended by the author to be used as a religious text as such it has invaluable insight which corelates to the 'other' types of caring that is done in community life.

I found this book to greatly reduce my anxiety as it addressed all of my worries and other issues that were leading me towards burnout. It also has clear indications that it will continue to be useful as I move further into my career. This is a book I plan to read again and again.

Software as Capital: An Economic Perspective on Software Engineering

Brilliant Work - A clear explanation of software as a capital good
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-03
The best part of this book was Dr. Baetjer's explanation of software as a capital good and the knowledge component of capital goods. Drawing on a rich economic tradition, he indicates that software provides a clear example of how the value of capital goods rests in embodied, unarticulated knowledge. Not only does he make this argument convincingly, he makes it clearly. I am neither an economist nor a software engineer, but found even the most difficult economic concepts relatively easy to grasp because of how he articulates them; they are made clear and concise without being dumbed-down for a lay audience. Dr. Baetjer brilliantly applies earlier theories of capital goods to the new field of software engineering.

If this sort of material interests you, I recommend:
Howard Baetjer, Review of Austrian Economics, "Capital as Embodied Knowledge: Some Implications for the Theory of Economic Growth," vol. 13 #2, September 2000
Thomas Sowell, Knowledge and Decisions, 1980 (or the 1996 edition)

Still way ahead of its time

Just the first chapter's examples of the capital structure of knowledge is worth the price of the book. In many ways software development went through its own communism, long documents, plan the whole thing before you do it, waterfall blah blah. All the Agile stuff, quick prototying , using prototyping to gather requirements, a discovery procedure... The root of all this lies in understanding the capital structure of knowledge.

Towards a Better Understanding of the Economics of Software

Review Date: 2000-02-29
Howard Baetjer, Jr., takes the reader through a highly informative and thought-provoking lesson in the economics of software engineering. Building on the solid theoretical work of the economists of the Austrian school, he identifies (through solid and thorough industry research) a number of problem areas in the existing marketplace for software, and offers viable solutions to each.

One need be neither an economist nor a software designer to gain usable knowledge from this book; its principles are applicable to any field. Baetjer does a superb job of fully explaining the underlying theories upon which he builds his thesis, using examples from other industries which make the more abstruse subject matter much easier to understand.

Regardless of your field, you will benefit from reading this well-written book.

Most books on bodywork theory are really interesting to me. I am fascinated by the body so I love reading them. Usually, I am thrilled if I learn one or two techniques that make their way into my practice. This book did WAY more than that.
This book gives practical, immediately usable techniques that any bodyworker can use. My rate of success with clients has improved dramatically. This book has even inspired me to start Rolfing school next year.
The only other books that I have read that even come close to the usefulness of this book are Job's Body and Anatomy Trains. If either of those were helpful to you, this book shows lots of hands on techniques that you can use today.

Read, learn and apply the secrets of structural bodywork
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.

With a plethora of books available on "how to do" techniques for all types of everyday manual therapy, it's not every day you come across a "where to apply" manual.

This book of structural bodywork is easy to read and apply. It runs through all of the latest fascial concepts and theory and gives details of different ways to view posture from a structural integrators point of view. It also includes a very useful chapter on manual techniques with some movement exploration, as used by the author who happens to be a Rolfer among many other things. All of the information is well presented and contains plenty of illustrations for us who like to look and learn.

Another quality is that it contains quite a few of the so called "secrets" of structural integration that can't be learned from your local college or university. The information contained is easily applied, very useful, and of course "cutting edge" with the author including some of the latest findings in fascial research.

I highly recommend this book if you are a student Rolfer, practitioner of Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, Remedial Massage or other manual therapist. Quite simply, there is nothing else around like it!

Its good. Once you get over his British writing style, its a good read. I'm only 1/2 way through, but I have found it very accessible so far. Not only does he talk about the UML diagraming, he talks about the Unified Process (in like 250 pages! - now thats a refreshing break). The book delivers what it promises. Its not a reference guide, but it is definitly *teaching* me some practical stuff.

A practical and useful approach to O-O projects, UML and UP.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-26
This is a rare find. It is a useful combination of many related software engineering topics, with enough O-O history to provide some perspective, and enough detail on the Unified Process & the Unified Modeling Language to provide both an understanding and a practical series of steps for project success.

If your department tries to balance doing things right with doing things quickly, if you're wondering why the UML has become the de facto notation, if you're using Java and want your group to do more object-oriented approaches, if you're thinking you'd like to use Java, or you'd like to use the UML for your design notations, if you've heard object-oriented engineering can provide some benefit.. then you'll probably find this book to move to the top of your 'must read and must share' list.

If you're moving your architecture towards distributed objects and Enterprise JavaBeans, there's some useful advice on designing Java-specific objects.

It is clearly written and easy to follow, and can be read chapter by chapter or as a reference text. I would have only one suggestion for the author. He briefly mentions the similarity between O-O and the Spiral Model or the UP and the Spiral Model. Mr. Hunt would have done well to include an overview of the Spiral Model in his work. [Search the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon for more info. Our design team considers the Spiral Model an important and practical and even useful approach to software engineering projects. Combine the Spiral Model methodology for projects, the Unified Process approach to designs, and the Unified Modeling Language for design notations, and you've got what we consider to be a winning approach to object-oriented software development.

Mr. Hunt provides a valuable book on the UP and the UML with a real world perspective. We're going to buy copies of his book for our entire team.

Shows how to use RUP in real life

Easily approachable and good. The book talks not just about RUP, but also about its roots (OMT, Fusion, objectory etc), and about UML. It also guides the reader through the maze of workflows in the RUP and gives advice on how to configure RUP as a lightweight process for web development. This book is a great contrast to all the other RUP books that are too theoretical to be of any use except for those who already are using RUP.

Excellent resource for threat assessment professionals!

An excellent and comprehensive guidebook for professionals involved in the area of threat assessment and incident management. This is a sorely needed text that covers the critical issues that the practitioner in this relatively newly developing field faces everyday. Corcoran and Cawood share the knowledge gained from their years of experience in a readable and well organized format. I highly recommend this book for either novices interested in this area of study, or for experienced practitioners to use as a primary reference.

A very good, very detailed, practical guide

Mike and I have attempted to provide a very detailed and practical book to aid practitioners in managing case load. Sometimes it is with teams of talented people (wonderful when it happens) and sometimes it is triage, by yourself, late on a Friday afternoon when no one else is around. We assume that you know how to form teams and know why you would want to do violence risk assessment, the question is how to do it the best possible way, considering as many factors as possible to guide the best outcome. I think this book provides a variety of tools, insights, and ideas in one place that you, the practitioner will find helpful and that anyone who is working with emotionally and mentally destablized people will find of practical benefit, including law enforcment in any assignment, mental health practitioners, legal professionals, human resource professionals, and people interested in the field.
We hope you find it valuable and that it enhances your safety and the safety of the people and communities that you work for and with.

A most valuable resource for all with an interest in Eczema
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-03
This is an extremely useful resource for anyone seeking clear and up-to-date information about Atopic Eczema. Although the title mentions Practitioners, the style and content are accessible to the lay reader. Early chapters look concisely yet comprehensively at the factors contributing to atopic skin disease. This material provides much interesting background understanding. The latest thinking about the various treatment approaches is discussed, and the latter part of the book deals with a 'habit reversal' approach which the authors have pioneered and which works well to augment the efficacy of a treatment regime. The tone of the book is positive and friendly. For anyone wishing to look a little further into atopic eczema and its management this book is invaluable.

For anyone wishing to gain a good understanding of the factors contributing to atopic skin disease and its management, this is a most useful resource. Early chapters examine the nature of atopic eczema and factors which contribute to it. The latest thinking on approaches to treatment are covered, and the latter part of the book details a 'habit reversal' approach pioneered with much success by the authors, which contributes to an effective and lasting treatment regime. Although the title mentions practitioners, the style and content are accessible by the lay reader. The tone is friendly and positive. This book contains a great wealth of useful information which will contribute enormously to the understanding of anyone with a serious interest in atopic eczema. I recommend it very strongly.
