This is a good introduction but not as good as the rave reviews would really have you believe. This isn't a five-star book. Some parts of the text could do with some illustrations. Much of the info in here is available in Jerry Alan Johnson's books so it would really need something new or a new approach or inspired layout to lift it into the five star all-time classic category. Still not to bad but not worth all the hoopla from her colleagues.

I am a graduate student in Traditional Chinese Medicine and have studied Medical Qigong under Dr. Suzanne Friedman for the past year. Suzanne learned her art in China and now trains Medical Qigong practitioners in one of the only Medical Qigong programs in the USA. As an instructor, Suzanne demonstrates adept expertise continually through lecture and clinic. She is both personable and professional while imparting valuable insight with illustrative stories from her personal experience and practice.

I highly recommend this book for any healer or self-healer. It is concise, organized, cohesive, practical, and informative. This book promotes holistic self-healing of the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Spiritual seekers, and especially qigong practitioners, must be especially wary because books containing ancient/traditional knowledge often misguide the reader (slightly or blatently), in order to protect proprietary information. Suzanne is not such a teacher -- she cares deeply for healing and health. This little book is a good book to have and learn from.

If you want more knowledge about alternative medicine and qigong, I encourage you to visit the website for Dr. Suzanne Friedman's clinic (google search for "daoclinic").

Do you want to learn effective Qigong, get to the roots of Qigong in this fantastic book.

Medical Qigong Exercise Prescriptions: This small book contains more valuable information about medical qigong than most books two to three times its size. It is concise, well-written, and accomplishes what it sets out to do, which is to introduce the reader to the theory and practice of medical qigong. Anyone who reads this book will be able to put it to immediate use and begin practicing exercises specifically designed for their particular health issues.

Before I accepted anything a "professional" said about children, adults or anything to do with mental health or the "helping professions," I would do a thorough background check on any and all of the writers prior to believing whatever may be written or said by a certain group of people who, after all, profit from other people's trauma and grief. Has anyone ever interviewed any of the people these authors "helped?" Buyer beware!

Having been trained differently than what this book discusses, it's a little hard to wrap one's mind around the concepts, especially since people in my profession are used to a certain way of thinking and training. However, when put into practice and when read with an open mind, the book makes absolute sense. I am in the beginning stages of MST and hope that it not only works out for the population in my area, but that I can one day be an MST expert.

Change the world of high risk kids and our world

I own this book. If you have a really troubled kid, you are a state or local leader, you are an agency person working with kids, your a poliician or someone who cares about the future. READ this book. Yes it's dry. Yes it's technical. So is reading about the new cancer medication that might save your life or the new HIV-vaccine research or or the new brain scan literature. Embedded insiide the methods of MST are strategies that really turn about the lives of kids, families and communities. What is inspiring is that the model presented REALLY works. What a concept! All across America-counselors, families, juvenile justice folks, school people are pulling their hair out on what to do about really difficult kids. Too, often the answer is: Throw 'em out, drug 'em out, and lock 'em up. Well, they get out eventially. MST can change all of that. It is cost effective. It has science. It has people who are doing it well all over the world.

Fantastic Treatment Manual

Review Date: 2004-01-09
Therapists working with adolescent delinquency problems have long lamented the paucity of effective treatments. Fortunately, the innovative researchers who wrote this book have developed a delinquency treatment with documented effectiveness - multisystemic treatment (MST). This manual presents the basic tenets of MST, which consist of nine principles. MST is a comprehensive treatment that targets not only the youth's behavior but also family and community factors. The treatment acknowledges that adolescents with delinquency problems are affected by factors in their environments, such as delinquent peers, parents who do not monitor their behavior, or poor educational opportunities. Thus, the treatment is usually conducted in the home and other relevant settings.

The goal of MST is to decrease rates of antisocial behavior and prevent the youth from being removed from the home; research has documented that MST meets these goals, as well as being a tremendously cost-effective treatment. I have used this treatment with a number of clients with great success (I was trained by Dr. Borduin). A prior reviewer pointed out that one should know about the authors of a psychology book before purchasing it; fortunately, the authors of this book come with excellent credentials. Drs. Henggeler, Schoenwald, Rowland, and Cunningham are on the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina, and Dr. Borduin is a Professor at the University of Missouri. In addition, their research on the treatment has been published in many peer-reviewed journals, including:

Henggeler, et al. (1999). Home-based multisystemic therapy as an alternative to the hospitalization of youths in psychiatric crisis: Clinical outcomes. Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. 38(11), 1331-1339.

Henggeler, et al. (1996). Multisystemic therapy: An effective violence prevention approach for serious juvenile offenders. Journal of Adolescence, 19(1), 47-61.

The manual is very well-written and easy to follow; the authors use many examples to explain the treatment implementation. Clearly this manual and MST itself have tremendous strengths. The basic tenets and principles are likely to be useful to any child/adolescent therapist, although some office-based therapists may not be able to use a pure MST model. A most highly recommended treatment guide.

After reading an excerpt from the book in last year's Biotone catalog and the two glowing reviews on this site, I was really looking forward to this book.

I feel rather ripped off, now that I have the book. I have never written a bad review before, so I must feel strongly!

The author, indeed, is an excellent PR person. She has sold the idea of her book well. Yes, the excerpts I've read were excellent, but they were the best parts of the book.
The book is disorganized and has quite a few typos. It feels like a self published book. I was offended that there are ads in the back of the book.

If you want to envision success, learn about PR and marketing, and even publishing your own book, there are many good books out there.

I thought I was purchasing a book for alternative health practitioners building their practice; this is only a very small part of what this book is about. If that is what you're looing for; don't waste your money.

Andrea's book not only makes for an easy read, but she gives you tons of examples to draw upon so you can start immediately implementing the marketing of your business without spending thousands of dollars. The sound marketing advice she shares proves her business expertise while the spiritual aspect of the book is a beautiful reflection of her whole being. I've struggled for years trying to get it right, and as it has been said, 'a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing'. After spending time and money and not being able to 'make it happen', I came across a write up on Andrea's book and decided to take a chance. I received the book and began reading, I could not put it down. There is a definite connection to the writer, you KNOW she has done what she's teaching. I read the book through and was amazed at the thoroughness, simplicity of explanations, encouragement and optimism I found in the pages. On the second reading, I began the implementation. It was like Andrea was sitting on my shoulder, she knew when I wanted to jump ahead, and there it was - 'complete this before moving on'! Amazing.
This book is a refreshing read, step by step instructions, options, examples and encouragement. The concept is universal. I've been able to successfully develop not only my own business, but utilize what I've learned and experienced in helping others. I thank the Universe for Andrea Adler, her gift and her desire to share it.

As I read 'Creating an Abundant Practice" by Andrea Adler I realized that I finally found the answers all in one book. As A clinical nutritionist in private practice I have for years sought a cohesive manual/text/course that tells how to create a thriving practice while at the same time honoring the concept of abundance. Andrea Adler's book does just that.
The first 4 chapters begin with a discussion that includes the notion of seeing and intending what you really want from your practice in the future. What a concept! So many of us are sprung onto the business scene and never define, state or even know out true desired intentions. The book then helps you learn how to extend this vision forward through the practicalites of creating your practice.Andrea tells how to create the best business card, resume, sound bite, brochure and advertising techniques that reflect the image you choose to put
forth. There are many examples of business cards, resumes, splash sheets and ads which are clear and helpful. This book will take you step by step through the journey of building a prosperous business. This book does not teach you how to become a business baracuda. Instead the emphasis is on the you, your integrity and the potential for abundance. Andrea's tone is playful and always positive which makes the book a pleasant read.

I'm still making my way through this book, but what I've seen so far has offered an interesting explanation of the mood disorders. To be sure, mood disorders are not entirely determined by genes - there are environmental factors to be considered as well, as twin studies have shown. However, suggestions that there are genes which can predispose individuals to mood and thought disorders is compelling; this explanation can provide an answer for many questions that pure environmental accounts cannot. It makes for a worthwhile read.

In reply to an earlier reviewer, I would note that the past month has seen announcements concerning potential marker genes for bipolar disorder and depression-triggers, lending some credence to the premise of the book.

How about some real evidence?

This is another in the long line of books and articles claiming that mental illnesses are largely genetic. This claim is made despite the fact that not a single gene has been found to be linked to a mental disorder (at least not one that wasn't refuted a few years later). I guess the idea is to put out a bunch of studies making claims and, by the time the studies are refuted, you can crank out some new ones. My favorite passage in this book goes as follows: "Recent linkage analysis studies have replicated initial reports of positive linkage to chromosome 6 markers in families with schizophrenia. Although there are several negative studies, the evidence implicating the short arm of chromosome 6 is the strongest to date for schizophrenia." "Several negative studies"? That sounds quite uncompelling to me. If you are going to assert that mental illnesses are genetic and human beings can be reduced to genetic robots...

Detailed, scholarly, but fully accessible for lay readers .

This book is not about counseling or psychotherapy. It is another new age book on NLP, a silly theory that was debunked many years ago. Remember Bandler and Grinder? NLP is based on nothing more than their strange opinions. There is no science or even rationality behind this speculation. As long as there are new agers out there looking for new ways to "put people into a trance" there will be a market for newage such as this.

While the book had helpful information throughout the chapters, the questions were not as helpful. The questions were wordy (and the test is NOT that wordy) and I found at least one mistake in every section. The mistakes either had the wrong answer printed or it contradicted what was stated in the chapter. I did really enjoy the fact that this book provided explainations to each question which helped me work through my mistakes (and find theirs).

Overall, the book was helpful in some ways, but I ended up using another book towards the end because of frustration with the questions. The chapter information was quite helpful.

I think this is a helpful guide, although some of the rationales for the answers were not always clear and could be interpreted very differently. There were also some contradictions and typo os that I found. One specifically states on one page that keflex may not be given to any child under one month, then in an answer to a question in the same chapter state you may give keflex to a 3 week old. I would like to contact the authors or editors to alert them to at least 10 errors I found.

Definitely worth purchasing as a PNP certification review book and as a general pediatric review book. Text is divided into systems and includes an excellent outline as an overview for each chapter. In addition, this book addresses growth and development, safety, parenting, genetics, health promotion, common pediatric illness, and numerous other issues. Includes clearly written and useful tables and charts. Easy to use, organized, well-written questions. Answers to questions, with rationales, are immediately following the questions, so there is no need to search through the book to find the answer sections! Compared with other certification review books, this one is clearly superior in its organization, coverage of current issues, outlines for each chapter, visual displays, and clarity.

I would recommend many texts written on hearing aids for consumers and health care personnel far more than this one. While certainly a practical manual for dispensers, this is not a book meant for audiology students or medical professionals (try Harvey Dillon's Hearing Aids or the Valente series instead). A well-written introduction to the topic, but not grounded fully in medical and scientific research to be a primary text or reference for audiologists.

The last time I checked, Amazon and its online partner Borders sell more than 53,000 different books on the general subject of strategy. Presumably this number will continue to increase as organizations become more actively involved with formulating and then executing an effective strategy.

What we have here is one of the volumes which comprise a series produced by faculty members at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and on faculties elsewhere. In this instance, co-authored by Kellogg's Daniel Dranove and Sonia Marciano, Institute Fellow and Senior Lecturer at The Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at the Harvard Business School.

I feel obligated to suggest at the outset that none of the volumes in this series is an "easy read." On the contrary, each requires but will generously reward a careful consideration of its contents which are carefully organized within nine chapters which range from "Getting Ready to Do Strategy" (with Samsung providing the illustrative example) to "Two Examples of Strategy in Action: Southwest Airlines and the Chicago Hospital Market." Case studies in and of themselves can be very informative. In this volume, the use of these three and others is especially effective as a means by which to illustrate both common business situations as well as the key points made in the article in which each case study is included.

Those who read this book are provided with an abundance of concepts, tools, and frameworks from which they can select those which are most appropriate and then, key point, make whatever modifications as may be necessary to accommodate the specific needs, interests, resources, and objectives of a given organization.

For whom will this volume be most valuable? There are several constituencies which include undergraduate and graduate students if business and their instructors as well as those who have recently earned a business degree and are now embarked on their career. Moreover, I think this book will be of substantial benefit to more experienced executives (regardless of the size or nature of their organization) who require -- and can handle -- a rigorous, at times daunting examination of how to formulate and then implement an effective strategy, and, how to obtain and then sustain support of it throughout the given enterprise. There are several reasons why such initiatives seldom succeed, among them being the inherent difficulty of charting an appropriate course and then remaining on it. Even the best of maps and Horatio Nelson at the helm cannot save a sinking ship.

This concise guide to strategy offers an excellent basic introduction to business strategy. David Dranove and Sonia Marciano not only outline their own benefits-minus-cost ("B - C") approach to strategy; they also usefully summarize the essentials of other widely accepted approaches, most notably that of Harvard Business School professor Michael E. Porter. They write lucidly, avoid academic jargon and stay focused on the essentials without burdening the reader with unnecessary detail. They illustrate their discussion with examples drawn from actual business successes and failures and two case studies, one from the airline industry and the other from the health-care industry. We recommend this book to beginning managers looking for a strategy primer. Experienced strategists can turn to it for a refresher course in fundamental business truths.
