School Neuropsychology handbookReview Date: 2007-02-19
Thorough and well-researchedReview Date: 2008-03-27
Likely one of the best School Neuropsychology resources to surface, I particularly found the Case Studies as well as the practical approach to disorders typically found in the schools (written language, reading, ADHD) useful in my own practice. The chapter entitled Linking Assessment to Intervention is tantamount to today's changing dynamic in the field and gives School Psychologists interested in Neuropsychology a solid conceptualization of appropriate service delivery in which the psychologist can intervene to assess as opposed to simply running everyday psychoeducational reports with figures nobody understands. The authors guide the practitioner to use effective pre-referral intervention programs to offset the tremendous amount of referrals seen in the schools today.
This is a well-researched and thorough handbook that has accomplished all the important groundwork to help guide School Neuropsychology into the future. I highly recommended it as a useful reference for any researchers and clinicians working with children and adolescents.

The Real ThingReview Date: 2008-03-12
By the mid-80s, Barry's name was so well known to me from my reading that I would immediately read anything with his name attached. In about 1985 I attended a reception held by TRW in a large new building to the south of their main campus in Redondo Beach - invited by someone who told me that Barry "BEEEM" - the manager of some kind of software project - was interested in talking with me. I'd never seen Barry at a IEEE function nor heard his name stated verbally. But I attended the function - a typical function the excessive style of the mid-80s, expensive foods, etc. Then I was led to a small conference room and met "BEEEM." We had an interesting chat but nothing extraordinary. When I left, one of his aides gave me his card... it was then I realized who I had been talking with!
We could have discussed in detail and overview, any number of his papers, but I didn't know what his name sounded like or what he looked like.
This collection has to be termed definitive and certainly comprises a wonderful record of the development and advances of the software engineering community.

What Can't Be TaughtReview Date: 2003-08-03
The marks of a great teacher are those that cannot be taught in even the best of teacher ed programs. These are the qualities of compassion, empathy, and sincere love for one's students. The author possesses these qualities; she shares them with the reader time and time again in the text.
The book is part reflection, part narrative. Through reflection/narrative, we enter into the lives of several first graders. At times, the horror of what children live through is overwhelming. At other times, Ms. Hankins' tender and creative methods of teaching the children are what leaps from the page (you find yourself wondering if you would ever have been able to think of such ingenious strategies for soothing the troubled 6 year old).
What stands out, though, is not the heartbreaking stories (although they are unforgettable), but how Ms. Hankins was able to better inform her teaching, and therefore better serve her students, by reflecting on the everyday occurrences in the classroom. Highly recommended book.
