Preventing Workplace Violence: A Guide for Employers and Practitioners (Advanced Topics in Organizational Behavior)

A very helpful guide

This is the best book on this topic I have seen. As the owner of a mid-sized company, I run into violence, threat and harassment situations almost weekly. The book is intelligent, has useful case studies, and concise guidelines on how to develop and implement policy. The author knows his stuff and has a humane, reasonable approach to these tricky issues.

This is the book to buy

As a forensic psychologist who conducts threat assessments and fitness-for-duty evaluations of potentially violent employees, I found Dr. Braverman's book to be the most informative, readable, and practical text available. I recommend it highly to HR professionals, Occupational Health physicians and nurses, employment lawyers (don't be offended by some of Dr. Braverman's constructive criticism of too-conservative corporate counsel!), Employee Assistance professionals, union officials, security officers, anyone who worries about a co-worker's potential for violence, and anyone who has been accused of threatening violence on the job. If more employers took Dr. Braverman's advice, workplace homicides and other forms of violence (e.g., assualts, harassment, hostile work environment, threats, intimidation) would decrease, employee stress would diminish, and worker productivity would improve.

As the title states, this is "A Practitioner's Handbook" and an extremely useful one for the practicing School Psychologist or anyone involved with or interested in furthering their knowledge of School and Clinical Neuropsychology.

Likely one of the best School Neuropsychology resources to surface, I particularly found the Case Studies as well as the practical approach to disorders typically found in the schools (written language, reading, ADHD) useful in my own practice. The chapter entitled Linking Assessment to Intervention is tantamount to today's changing dynamic in the field and gives School Psychologists interested in Neuropsychology a solid conceptualization of appropriate service delivery in which the psychologist can intervene to assess as opposed to simply running everyday psychoeducational reports with figures nobody understands. The authors guide the practitioner to use effective pre-referral intervention programs to offset the tremendous amount of referrals seen in the schools today.

This is a well-researched and thorough handbook that has accomplished all the important groundwork to help guide School Neuropsychology into the future. I highly recommended it as a useful reference for any researchers and clinicians working with children and adolescents.

Severe Behavior Problems: A Functional Communication Training Approach

good read!

Easy read for families and teachers. He discusses using requesting skills to replace instances of severe behavior. He explains in detail how to get a child to mand for breaks rather than engage in disruptive behavior. However, a person can design a plan to replace the break requests with whatever the child needs to match the behavior function they are seeking (e.g. attention, tangibles, etc.).

Approaching behavior scientifically

Dr. Durand presents an easily understood, yet technically tight, presentation of functional communication training. Dr. Durand provides an excellent demonstration of the applied analysis of behavior and provides a framework for understanding that behavior. This book should be read by anyone and everyone who works with individuals with communiction difficulties who are engaging in troubling behavior.

This book on social skills training is useful not only for schizophrenics but also for other clients whose treatment includes the need to use role play to teach various skills. I purchased it for use in a new Dual Dx program at our agency but immediately saw its use for training staff to do more role play in our CBT-based substance abuse tx program for all clients.

Dr. Barry Boehm has provided a great deal to the software engineering community. From estimation to economics and many additional topics, his works need understanding by every software engineer. When I read other literature on software engineering, I seem to typically find references to Dr. Boehm. He has influenced many in this field.

The Real Thing

Review Date: 2008-03-12
I have been a member of the IEEE since 1971 and have developed/tested software since 1969, so I have read dozens of Barry Boehm's articles in the various journals. This were, without exception, all of value, and many quite eye opening, as our professional struggled to advance both the technology and the discipline of software development.

By the mid-80s, Barry's name was so well known to me from my reading that I would immediately read anything with his name attached. In about 1985 I attended a reception held by TRW in a large new building to the south of their main campus in Redondo Beach - invited by someone who told me that Barry "BEEEM" - the manager of some kind of software project - was interested in talking with me. I'd never seen Barry at a IEEE function nor heard his name stated verbally. But I attended the function - a typical function the excessive style of the mid-80s, expensive foods, etc. Then I was led to a small conference room and met "BEEEM." We had an interesting chat but nothing extraordinary. When I left, one of his aides gave me his card... it was then I realized who I had been talking with!

We could have discussed in detail and overview, any number of his papers, but I didn't know what his name sounded like or what he looked like.

This collection has to be termed definitive and certainly comprises a wonderful record of the development and advances of the software engineering community.

I read this book because I was considering using it in a college level diversity issues class that I teach for teachers and those preparing to be teachers. Once I read it, I knew that I would have to use it; I couldn't put it down! It was like a great novel. Hankins reminded me of the importance of truly listening to students and knowing them. That is an important message for teachers at any level. Plus her meditations on journal writings as data for qualiative research are fascinating. I recommend this book for anyone who could use a little inspiration.

What Can't Be Taught

Review Date: 2003-08-03
Any teacher, from pre-service to veteran, would be greatly served by reading this book.

The marks of a great teacher are those that cannot be taught in even the best of teacher ed programs. These are the qualities of compassion, empathy, and sincere love for one's students. The author possesses these qualities; she shares them with the reader time and time again in the text.

The book is part reflection, part narrative. Through reflection/narrative, we enter into the lives of several first graders. At times, the horror of what children live through is overwhelming. At other times, Ms. Hankins' tender and creative methods of teaching the children are what leaps from the page (you find yourself wondering if you would ever have been able to think of such ingenious strategies for soothing the troubled 6 year old).

What stands out, though, is not the heartbreaking stories (although they are unforgettable), but how Ms. Hankins was able to better inform her teaching, and therefore better serve her students, by reflecting on the everyday occurrences in the classroom. Highly recommended book.

Western Herbs According to Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Practitioner's Guide offers up some 58 monographs, illustrated with color photos, of herbs commonly used by Western herbalists. Each herb is grouped by the basic categorization for medicinals in Chinese medicine, with writings dealing with functions, dosage, preparation and contraindications. Any herbal medicine collection must have this in-depth index of Chinese formulas applied to Western herbs.

Valuable new herbal for the clinic

As a practitioner of both Western and Chinese herbal medicine I am thrilled to see this book in print. This book contains many features that are completely unique to clinical guides in the Traditional Chinese Medical literature in print in the West. First off, the photographs taken by the author are gorgeous, unrivaled in any clinical herbal that I know of. The adherence to T.C.M. terminology makes this book more coherent than other attempts to take on this task in the past which ought to allow for easier inclusion of the included Western herbs in a clinical setting for the practitioner. Especially engaging are both the authors commentary on combining medicinals for specific conditions and for combining Western herbs with Chinese formulas. Also of value in the commentary is the extraordinary erudition - the guided tour of the best of 2000 years of Materia medicas and clinical manuals of both herbal traditions. I could go on, but well, just buy the book...

This is one of three review books I have found for preparing for the WHNP exam. What I really liked about this review book was the case study format. The short scenarios give enough information to make you think, but not so much as to make the answer a "gimme". The rational for each answer not only explaions the correct answer, but also explains why the other options are incorrect. I have learned a great deal from this text!

Review Date: 2007-12-09
This book is just what I was looking for. I am responsible for designing reliability and validation tests for a design center. The other books I have purchased fall into 2 categories; (1) very heavy mathematics with few or no practical examples, and (2) a lot of practical discussion, but little or no mathematics. This book combines the theory of statistical testing while discussing the practical limitations of simulating 10 or 20 years of real world use in a laboratory. The best part is the CD that comes with the book. The CD contains all the examples in the book completely worked in Excel, and about 30 military standards.
