Great "fly on the wall" ethnography of !Kung life

Taking a medical anthropology course, the teacher happened to assign this obscure ethnography of the Kalahari !Kung. It's an easy read, a fast read, and if you lend a bit of trust to the author Richard Katz, you get a critical view into the probably now vanished !Kung of South Africa (they've been placed on reservations by the then white South African government). The focus of this ethnography is the ritual healing dances of the !Kung, where healers dance to attain "num", an ancestral/divine energy that has tons of physiological affects, whereby they achieve "kia", an altered state of consciousness utilized in their mode of healing. Films I've seen of the Kalahari !Kung show the healers screaming (known as kowhedili) and "pulling sickness" from fellow tribesmen and women. This book is a great read about a modern hunter-gatherer tribe, by now probably vanished from the face of the earth. Indexicality incompatibility is fairly bridged by Katz, and his concluding recommendation about traditional !Kung practices and correlations to modern cummunity medical outreach strategy is useful. An old ethnography (1982) but a goodie.

Great Introduction on Chakras & Breathing

This is a really neat little booklet explaining the basics not only of Chakra Breathing techniques but of the nature, origin & function of Chakras. The book goes into details of the dis-ease that comes when a Chakra is out of balance, symptoms to look for and describes in detail what a fully functioning Chakra's effects are like.
The tone of the book gives very good information for the reader, never talking down or extending over the reader's head.
The tape that follows the book goes into specific breathing patterns for each of the Chakras. At times I thought the music was a bit too loud and overshadowed the recordings of breath patterns, but overall a good cassette to have.
I have a lot of cassette tapes on this subject & this one was very satisfying.
Oh I should mention that the book when you see it may seem to be rather small but the content makes up for it. Very enjoyable reading!

This is a typically workman-like product of the Chinese Foreign Languages Press, that has been putting out textbooks for many years. It is comprehensive and well-produced.
The reaons for the four stars rather than five is this: although the techniques can indeed be used by an individual as part of a self care program, this book requires a fair amount of knowledge about finding specific acupuncture points. Though they are illustrated, it can be hard to find some of them from the pictures. Secondly most contemporary Chinese acupuncturists acknowledge that although some acupuncture points are always in pretty much the same place, the positions of some of the points are not precise, and have to be found by palpation. If a person hasn't been shown how to do that, they may miss the spot, and then it is less likely that the treatment will be effective.
So the main audience for this book will be acupuncturists who want to give their patients some homework. And for that it is first rate.

Biomagnetic healing is a little understood subject in the West, but
one with great potential for helping people understand and lessen
their pain and suffering. The New Age (in my opinion a 'secular
spirituality' that is a reaction against the 'God is the machine'
approach of the Industrial Age) has muddied the waters of
understanding through too many books and practices that are basically
the authors' opinion of how these principles should work, with
overstated proclamations of their effectiveness, rather than an
objective look at how well they really do work. David and Glenda
(they are teachers of mine, I don't pretend complete objectivity in
this review) both have backgrounds in Western science and bring the
high standards of Karl Popper ("The severe the test, the more
valuable the hypothesis that survives it") into their exploration
of biomagnetic and other healing modalities. And yet they retain
minds that are open to the vast possibilities that the timeless wisdom
of Eastern mind sciences like biomagnetic healing can bring to
everyday living in the West. This book is NOT the typical cotton
candy one finds in New Age literature. It is very accurate and
in-depth in its scientific exploration of biomagnetic healing, without
negating the reality of healing that can, has and does take place. A
great introduction for those who have never heard of biomagnetic
healing therapies like Reiki or Healing Touch, it also includes
information and practices that will be new to the more experienced.
The reader will have to work around editing mistakes made by the
publisher.

Schrodter is an encyclopedic author who manages to synthesize several hundred years worth of information on energy transference and healing into slightly over 250 pages. Drawing on a wealth of little known Western esoteric lore, practices, and theory, Schrodter presents the reader with a fantastic account of occult healing methods from the Western esoteric point of view. Students of healing, Rosicrucianism, Qabala, and Alchemy with find it of much interest and use.

I was intrigued by the title of this book the moment I saw it on Amazon.com. After all, I was taught that you couldn't use Reiki unless a Reiki Master attunes you. I had done my own research on other energy methodologies and had formed by own opinions about attunements and whether or not they are necessary.
John Campbell is incredibly down to earth about reiki and how it works. He has some very strong opinions on the current reiki community, attunements, lineage and money. He sometimes gets dangerously close to overtly criticizing other practitioners, something I personally try to avoid. For as much as Mr. Campbell eschews traditional methods because of the "my way is the only way" mentality, he does little to encourage his readers to explore for themselves, judging other practitioners and masters, driving his audience to follow his method for fear of being mislead or overcharged.
It is Mr. Campbell's contention that Reiki should be accessible to all, at little or no cost. His book has instructions on how to attune yourself to reiki as a Level Three Reiki Master, showing you how to place the reiki symbols in your aura in 10 steps, encouraging you to follow your intuition and trust yourself.
Instructions on attuning to Level II and then Level I follow in that order. I find it intriguing that in his method, you are your own master. Not all together a bad concept.
Mr. Campbell does include a bit of what I call "filler" in this book. He elaborates on the four levels of energy, Goddess healing, Divine healing, Emotional healing and Universal connection. He describes the nine principles of reiki, of which I am unfamiliar. It is my belief that he includes these "nine principles" in order to more fully explain how you can attune yourself. There is a lot of redundant information on how energy works.
The author does include a wonderful overview of the reiki ideals. Mr. Campbell, in great detail, discusses what the ideals mean to him and why we should meditate on them every day.
What I find amazing is that for as liberal as Mr. Campbell is in his theories of reiki, his process of a healing session is very structured, almost to the point of being confining. In this method of learning, it may not be a bad idea to have such structure, as there is not a person in front of you giving you feedback. However, it would be a benefit to readers of this book to speak to some reiki practitioners about different ways that you are able to trust that reiki works no matter what you do, how long you hold your hands in one place, or what images you envision in your mind's eye.
Mr. Campbell's hand positions, although effective, are not what are traditionally taught. I personally have no issue with this, as I believe that traditions should not be adhered to just because they are traditions. That being said, he teaches more of an energy field position, floating the hands about the body in many areas. It is my personal opinion that hands on is much more nurturing and less "spooky" than this method. The only concern I have is that Mr. Campbell does not make the distinction that there are other methods.
Over all, I'm pretty impressed with this book for the author's willingness to blow through the mystery of reiki, presenting it as an accessible, understandable energy method of healing. In spite of his matter of fact presentation, he does express that reiki is a spiritual experience, one filled with wonder and possibilities. The core of reiki is not lost in this breaking down of barriers to understanding.

Tadao Yamaguchi tells a story about his mother Chiyoko Yamaguchi and how Reiki came into her life. He shares some stories of his childhood and how his mother healed him numerous times with Reiki. This book seems to be more of a life story and also how Reiki was originally practiced in Japan during the 30s. Chapters are... Some Words About Jikiden Reiki, Reiki & My Family, Basic Reiki Knowledge, Japan-Background To The Birthplace of Reiki, Practical Application, How Jikiden Reiki Is Taught and Feedback From Jikiden Reiki Students. I found the "Lectures On Byosen-Feeling The Accumulations of Toxins" quite fascinating in this book. I am still new to Reiki and trying to learn as much as i can about it, so this was a interesting read for me.

Excellent Addition to Your Studies on Reiki

As a Reiki Master/Teacher, I talk to many teachers and listen to many students discuss their first Reiki attunment.
There is a tendency these days to give a cheap Reiki first level attunment, with a quick lesson and a scrap of paper to explain it all. I have had many people who received first level attunments tell me it was a fake, a fraud and they got nothing out of it except losing their $$$.
Mr. Tompkins presents us with a book that would be a great augment to any first level practitioner who feels that the instructions were left out of their attunment.
Mr. Tompkins offers a very clear and exact manual on how to use your Reiki attunment to get the most out of this healing art. The pictures offer instruction that are clear and easy to follow.
There is a section about being professional as a Reiki practitioner. There are also correspondences for crystals and stones, and even for keeping personal records. Mr. Tompkins covers a lot of ground here, and makes this a book that is worth having in your personal library.
This book augments the first level Reiki attunment very well, and is worth a personal recommendation for those who did not seem to get out of their first attunment what they might have expected.
For those who did get a good foundation for their first attunment, this book might do well to cover those little nagging items that your teacher may have forgotten to add. Teachers are not perfect, and we do tend to get bogged down sometimes with some item or another that has us forgetting to cover another important part of our lesson. Here is a handbook that could fill in a blank or two.
This is a good reference book and it's good to see someone making this information available in a very clear and well written format.
