my chi experience at Canyon Ranch

Two years ago I had the opportunity to spend some time at Canyon Ranch and had the most magnificent experience while there. One of their healing touch practitioners worked on my body. She was in full meditation and with her hands pressed around the edges of my body. In five minutes time, I began to experience (with my eyes closed and fully dressed) shoes off.) . . . shades of purple running across inside my eyes. Then, in my abdomen ripples of energy that were physical , , ,energy that she had engendered by her healing practice. It was a strange experience and it must have been the chi that she invoked in my body. Just that experience made me realize that, indeed, there is such a thing as chi. I suggest the reading of "The Intention Experiment" by Lynne Mc Taggart for a comprehensive understanding of this phenomena called dan tien. There is so much that we still do not understand about the energy selves that we are. It is a fascinating experience to learn more and more about the wondrous selves that we are !!!!!!! This book is a nice description of a centered way of life, and a way of bringing mind and body into synchronization. However, it says nothing about the TanDien other than it's your belly and you should listen to it. On the whole disappointing, yet like many spiritual books, full of wisdom.

AS A HEALING TOUCH PRACTITIONER, I HAD HEARD OF THE DAN-TIEN, BUT THERE WAS VERY LITTLE KNOWN IN THIS AREA BY MY CIRCLE OF PEERS. I WAS EXCITED TO GET THIS BOOK AND THOROUGHLY ENGULF MYSELF IN IT. IT IS TRULY A CUT AND DRY SHORT-CUT TO HAVING A QUALITY LIFE BASED ON OUR OWN RESPONSIBLE NATURE. I LIKE IT, AND I INTEND TO FOLLOW IT.

Simple yet profound advice

Five Elements and Psychology

Review Date: 2002-04-11
I bought this book as a first year acupuncture student and have referred to it many times. As the other reviewer says, it is quite dark and does discuss extremes, but then mental illness is about extremes. It is really useful to look at the extreme yin or yang aspect of an Element and its Officals to fully understand how the Element can manifest when out of balance. I don't know of any other book which provides such an in depth picture of each of the 5 Element types. Sounds heavy, but is in fact relatively easy to read if you have a reasonable understanding of psychology. Definately one of my top 5 Chinese Medicine books, this is a book that you read again and again.

A Wonderfully rich and palatable sketch..........

I have read this book a few times, and in each reading, I find concepts and "observations", that are profoundly rich in their effort to put the reader in touch with some of the most difficult to grasp ideas about non-Traditional Chinese Medicine. Dr. Hammers background is much deeper and wider than what is taught in the schools here and in China. (If you don't know what I mean by that, explore what happened to the practice of indigenous Chinese Medicine during the cultural revolution.)

This is not a book for folks who are unfamiliar with the basic "tenets" of Chinese Medicine. It is a bit more "esoteric" in it's reach, and really tries to conceptualize "in the minds eye" relationships and interactions, energetically or "psychologically" if you prefer, that the TCM model attempts to form poorly, or not at all.

I must, respectfully, take the reviewer from Seattle to task about it being "dark". I certainly know what he means, but the only way to find fault in the extremes of the book, is if you didn't happen to read Dr. Hammers admission within the book, that he has exaggerated the conditions he describes, and that the patients are not real people. Rather, they are constructs of clients, created for the sake of fleshing out the concepts presented in the book. Though sometimes portions need a re-read, I just can't find fault with Dr. Hammer for doing what he suggests I should be aware he is going to do.

As another reviewer has said, this is one you'll return to over and over. A most wonderful book!!

Two stars for five element book (that's a pun ;-)

With the caveat that I'm not a practitioner, but merely a reasonably well-informed patient, I found this book overly **dark.** It was interesting, to a point, but also scary, and always tending towards the negative. I think the fact that the author is a psychiatrist may have something to do with that, but it seemed to take the exaggerated form of any of the five element's characteristics and show what it would look like, taken to the ultimate extreme--and, somehow, that was always bad. While I found a superbly fitting description of a difficult person in my life that helped me get some perspective on him by reading this book, at the same time, when I read items about my own element, I found them exaggerated and bizarre; as they would be in mental illness but not in real life. Apparently the author is almost "psychic" about being able to uncover the health-based Achille's heel in his patients, but I didn't find reading about it a nourishing or uplifting experience. Not that a book has to be, but this one was uniformly dark, and I had to believe that came from the author's perspective, and was no accident. Odd!

It's All About Integration

Review Date: 2000-05-19
The question of mind-body duality has fueled many long and heated debates. Dr. Hammer, who is well trained in traditional Western medicine and psychology, recognized the importance of working with the person, and not just a part of that person. In an effort to be true to his view, and to the patients he treated, he trained in and added Traditional Chinese Medicine to his treatment skills, thus allowing him to treat the whole person in an integrated, rather than a fragmented manner. This book presents Dr. Hammer's integrated understanding of how the body impacts the mind, and the mind impacts the body. In a clear and concise manner, and with useful clinical examples, Dr. Hammer takes the reader through fundamental principles and concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and then applies them to the specific area of Psychology. This is not a "how to" book, rather it is a thought provoking volume on how to integrate two seemingly disparate fields of health care (Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Western Psychoanalytic thought). Through his examination of these models and his description of how he thinks, as he works with his patients, the reader is able to gain insight into this integrated process. While the book is by no means an exhaustive treatise on the subject, it lays a solid foundation on which others can easily build, both academically and in clinical practice. I look forward to reading more of Dr. Hammer's writings in the future, and hope that other clinicans will follow his lead.

Alternative or complementary therapies are becoming more popular. More and more people have either been to one of these specialists for a health care concern or know of a friend or relative that has. For the most part, the results are positive. Like any other profession, you'll have people who are good at their work and those just there for a buck. Their results speak for themselves.

Still, there seems to be a bit of a stigma attached to alternative healing. The majority of people don't understand how the process actually works so it all seems a little mystic. In reality, these techniques are no more magical than x-rays, ultrasounds, or laser eye surgeries. We may not be able to see these energy waves but then we can't see radio waves either. That doesn't mean they don't exist.

How People Heal looks to understand the process of subtle energy healing. This book is fairly well balanced sharing both stories of first hand experiences and a slightly more scientific analysis.

I found Diane Goldner's book made for some fascinating reading. As an investigative journalist, she studies the subject of healing in an informative yet entertaining way. Anyone who is interested or just plain curious about healing would be advised to check this book
I literally could not put it down. She holds the reader's attention throughout, as she studies the character, ethics and effectiveness of several prominent healers and their techniques. She also situates the modality of healing within the context of the current health crisis.
I would emphatically recommed this book. The Power of Infinite Love & Gratitude: An Evolutionary Journey to Awakening Your Spirit

I am surprised that you are encouraging people to buy the two books, Infinite Grace and How People Heal--because these are, from what I can see, exactly the same book, with different titles. This is an excellent book; but I can imagine the frustrations of those who followed your suggestion!

As a teacher of Therapeutic Touch (developed by Dora Kunz and Dr. Dolores Krieger), I found this a fascinating read. I rank it with another book that was published around the same time as Infinite Grace, Afterwards You're a Genius by Chip Brown. For those of us who dwell in the realms addressed by the disciplines of "energy medicine," it is very helpful to have a body of literature about the various paths and personalities. I hope that books like these help people to realize that there are indeed many and varied disciplines under the energy medicine umbrella, and that it is as important to seek out the appropriate modality for each person as it would be to find the MD with the appropriate specialty for a physical issue.

I give the present title 4 stars because I don't agree that the subtitle "exploring the scientific basis of subtle energy in Healing" is truly applicable to this book. This claim would be more appropriate for a book like The Field by Lynn McTaggert. Julia Benkofsky-Webb, Hawaii, USA(under the member name, Garrett Webb)

The Ringing Sound is not just for those experiencing unusual auditory sensations. It is a revealing and enlightening guide to an ancient, secretly guarded meditation technique known as the Sound Current. As an introduction to the Sound Current, the book unites physics with metaphysics in an exploration of the nature of all life as energy. Tapping into the Source of energy through the Sound Current is the exciting goal.

The book is a culmination of many years spent by the author studying a variety of spiritual paths ranging from Shamanism to yoga and marshal arts. Written in a clear, concise style, it is beautifully formatted with intriguing sidebar quotations which add literary beauty as well as meaning to the main text. The result for this reader was a joyful, ahaa feeling on practically every page. It is highly recommended for all who seek an accelerated journey along the spiritual path.

The book has a great title and a good but brief introduction to the topic, but falls short of the promise by padding a few good pages of information into book-length with "la-la" filler. I was bothered that the entire "what you hear" section was vague and hardly filled one page. For example, there was no mention that many folks hear chords, and no mention of the pitch, that very curiously for many is the older musical key of A (~425 Hz), might possibly be the source of our musical scale, and no mention that the sounds become stronger when one clinches one's teeth. Nonetheless, this book is the first entry into a field rarely separately discussed, and my hope is that we don't have to wait long for the "fully researched and revised edition".

The "Ringing Sound" is a most incredible book. The author has explained a difficult subject that is little known and less understood. He brings it out of darkness and into the light of understanding nicely. This subject matter touches everyone's life. At some point we all have heard the ringing and buzzing sound in our ears. I heard it almost all of my life but didn't know what it was. Now it is plesantly with me all the time.
Most people who hear it fear that there is something wrong with them. I am a health proffessional and I get clients with this ringing often, I suggest that they read Eric's book. I am very gratefull to have such a wonderfull resource.
The book is an introduction to the world of energy and is not designed as an exstended meditaiton program. It is for the general public and anyone who is begining to explore the world of energy and meditation.
Eric explains this normal phenomenon in a way that is both logical and mystical at the same time. This is an easy, must read, one to keep by the bedstand.

I had dismissed the constant ringing in my ears as a physical phenomenem and an annoyance that I was destined to live with for the rest of my life. But when a physicist explains to me in layman terms that this may be spiritual energy, the sounds take on an entirely different meaning. The author unselfishly shares the mystical secrets of sound current which have been hidden away for centuries. It is obvious that he has a direct connection with Source.

Douglas clearly has such great respect for his readers. He does not write over anyone's head; he does not write down to anyone. The book covers healing techniques with detail and clarity. I learned many simple yet profound methods of energetic self-healing.

I was so inspired by his book, I called him for a healing over the phone. I was blown away. I had to have him on my Internet radio show. My listeners loved him so much they demanded I have him on again! Douglas is the real deal. Don't waste your time and money on other books about ancient healing techniques. This is your one stop shopping.

There are some good stuff for low level psychics and those interested in psychic ablities and healing, and such. But the books repeats a lot of stoff from the first book, and so forth. All this could had been shorten and more simple, and would of all fit in one book. Sure the writer meant well, but with all the repeating of methods, I skip a lot of of the pages from boring self and keep interests. But thats me. Like it to get to the point, and make it simple to follow. Others may like it the way it is written?

I not fond to New Age thinking, but this writer book 1 and 2 is ok. Though he not truely understand psychic nature, he makes some good points. As a clairsentient, you may find Taosim more your path.

This book has many good exercises to raise your consciousness and vibration.

Some of the techniques are mental, because everyone wants to enhance their ability to manifest what they desire. This requires focus. But before you can attempt focusing techniques, you need to resolve the conflicts between your conscious and subconscious. Start with acting, thinking and speaking in a positive manner and you will eventually change the subconscious.

Others are methods for facilitating energy movement throughout the body. Some of these techniques are similar to ones I've learned in Quantum Healing, and in preparation for attempting an OBE. It's nice when you get corroboration of these methods by several healers.

There is repetition of the Doug's first book, but it's always nice to repeat concepts until they become habit. I could have picked up the first book and reviewed it, but it's easier to go through it in one book, and then continue on to the next level.

Mr. Sherwood's book is both thorough AND useful in guiding a neophyte to spiritual healing work. He covers all the basics, historic and practical, and one finishes his book feeling capable of practicing the art of spiritual healing. If you are looking for a beginner's guide....this is one of the best. All the books on the subject are based on a writer's experience & perspective....Kieth adds the dimension of objectivity as well.

In an effort to deepen my knowledge and understanding of Reiki, I have studied a number of different variations. It has been a very interesting undertaking and I have enjoyed my studies thoroughly. Nonetheless, I have often noticed and wondered about slight differences in the way certain traditional symbols are written, differential translations of those symbols, or slight variations in the instructions for Reiki practice. Do these slight modifications matter? Does Reiki work by intention alone? What did Master Usui actually teach? Is the Reiki energy that I make use of the same as the original?

The Big Book of Reiki Symbols is an amazing reference for any Reiki practitioner that wants to delve deeper into the meaning of Reiki. At 671 pages, this book is quite a commitment, one well worth the effort I might add. As I found myself entranced in the pages, I gained an extraordinary sense of respect, insight, and understanding about what we do as practitioners. I've noticed that now I take more care and really appreciate the gift when I work.

I highly suggest taking lots of notes and having a good supply of post-it-notes to bookmark pages that you want to study in more detail. Believe me, there will be plenty. My copy looks like a bit like a porcupine.

If you are a Reiki practitioner who has an academic mind-set, or one who is interested in research, you will be glad to have this book in your library, otherwise it's not going to be a book you go to again and again in terms of technique or your practice.

It is difficult to follow, and very meandering in its approach to some of the information shared. This may be due, in part, to the fact that one of the author's writing is translated into English, and complicated further in that the subject matter is about Japanese and Chinese language concepts and history. That being said, I still found it of interest. However, I am appauled by the amount of errors in the book's copy; it seems that it didn't have a competent editor/proof reader assigned to it. So, I am disappointed in Lotus Press/Shangri-La for allowing this book to come to the public with errors that anyone could have found and should have been corrected.

There is significant background here that will make the threads of ancestry and ties to great wisdom more apparent- especially in terms of the symbols. Will it make you a better practitioner? Perhaps not, but if you can plow your way through the stiffer parts, it might make it easier to answer some of the questions we are asked all the time about Reiki and from where it comes. Namaste' to all of the seekers, believers, healthy skeptics, and hopeful out there.

This book is simply amazing -- a master class in Reiki.

It is the book I have been waiting for ever since my attunements over ten years ago. It is a true encyclopedia of reiki knowledge written with much care and research. It goes into enormeous depth regarding the purpose and use of symbols and mantras.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough -- a real blessing.

The authors present detailed history of the spirituality behind the symbols and Dr. Usui's use of them, which enriches my understanding of reiki but grounds reiki in its proper traditions. They give beautiful illustrations and descriptions for mudras and how to write the symbols. Opening the book is overwhelming with the sheer volume of information. It is not mearly for academic interest. Many sections cover what are essentially "recipes" for how to use the symbols effectively.

I hope that the previous review did not hurt the sales of this book. Yes it has typographical errors, but the wealth of information is worth minor errors.

I have never written a review for amazon, but I don't want this book to be overlooked, so I felt compelled to share my enthusiasm.

As Reiki Magazine says on the back, "With its more than 600 pages, this book surpasses all previous Reiki publications"

Many blessings

Wow, I'm never really sure what David is saying, although part of me senses the truth and is in awe of it. This may sound ridiculous, but that is how I feel. Radionics is real, no question, and David is very controversial obviously (especially within the Radionic community, surprisingly), so it is often like he is speaking an ancient language that is difficult to decipher. His ideas of reading the 7 major rays is fascinating. The reports that he can generate on people are mind blowing. I use various vibrational / energy techniques myself, but what David does and how he thinks is just beyond me currently. It's frustrating, but somehow such an important piece of work. This book is only for very advanced practitioners with an open mind. I'm also struck by the fact that David died prematurely and not too long after penning this book. Was it from the inherent danger of handling the 7 rays as he states in the book, or was it more sinister than that??

if of you are interested in radionics, you should first consider reading from tansley because he is one of the few authors that knows what he's talking about. to delve into this area of spirituality means encountering many persons who will try to influence you to usually buy something that has "magical powers" or try to mislead you to harm towards yourself or others. tansley is definitly not one of them, throughout the book he consistently stresses that radionics is here for personal spiritual growth and not to try anything with out knowledge about the subject. the book is very interesting, and granted you will need to read up much more to understand the bigger pictures of rays, radionics, and chakras, but the book is definitly worth reading as a basic understanding of the three elements.

Being a student of the author, I am somewhat biased in my assessment of his book, but frankly, I think it's great. As a student of Chi Kung, I am always in search of resources from which to learn the art and then pass these resources onto others. I have to say that Jim's book is one of the most complete and clear that I've read, thanks to the array of contributions from leading practitioners. However, the jewel of this book is that underlying the entire work is Five Element theory, an extremely effective though lesser known approach to acupuncture than TCM. Five Element functions both as a basis for a healing art and as a profound approach to life. Enjoy the wealth.

His exploration of the Qi (Chi) cultivation arts is assisted by 22 of the most impressive luminaries on this suject in the modern era -- Jahnke, Johnson, Garripoli, Winn, Weil, etc. MacRitchie's incredible crafting of his own writing, the writing of this impressive team of experts, the illustrations and photographs, creates one of the more definitive of the contemporary books on the subject of Qigong and its roots into the deep and rich soil of Chinese philosophy, medicine and culture.
