Lovely BookReview Date: 2007-08-07
The book was easy to read and kept me engaged. I've already purchased this book for a friend who's husband has cancer. I plan to mail copies to other friends too.
The book left me curious about Spring Forest Qigong. I would love to meet Master Lin.

Down-to-Earth and Inspiring Review Date: 2008-03-23
"Born a Healer" begins with the author's personal story about his journey from the childhood in his native China to becoming the well-known healer and teacher that he is today. The story of survival during the Cultural Revolution and the founding of the Spring Forest Qigong Healing Center is very inspiring.
In his book written in a genuine and down-to-earth style, the certified International Qigong Master, Chunyi Lin, teaches the readers the natural, and life enhancing methods of healing and easing their suffering. If you are committed to leading a healthy life without medication then this book is for you. Another great book that you may not miss is Cure the Incurable

This is the beginning of a wonderful JOURNEY!!Review Date: 2007-04-10
Many compliments to Asanaro for providing the road map to Discipline!!!
Take it from one who knowsReview Date: 2007-09-27
First, I was able to actually learn it from the book. I read some reviews that call the author pompous and such but I did not get that from the book at all. He is blunt and unapologetic about preferring this gentler and less violent method of exercise to say karate or weight lifting or marathon training etc. Some others observed that this is simply chi-gung revisited. Apparently these people have not had any exposure to chi-gung other than by reading books. It is not warmed over chi-gung. There are some similarities but did it ever occur to those so-called critics that this art precedes chi-gung by millennia. Chi-gung is like Seamm-Jasani not the other way around. Besides, so the genesis of the art or even the author may be in question...the results are not.
My experience: I bought the book and practiced and learned many of the moves. I saw results very quickly and without any pain. I felt better, slept better and thought better after I started Seamm-Jasani. Mark me completely satisfied at that point.
Then I found out that Asanaro (the author) was conducting a weekend class at the Boston Baobom School in Brookline Ma. I live in Texas on modest means but I cashed in some miles and rewards points, signed up for the session and enjoyed the best training days of my life. It turns out that the book instructions were very good and I was doing most of the movements approximately right. But the weekend transcended the practice of Seamm-Jasani. Every member of the school staff and to my pleasant surprise, each participant were simply wonderful people.
As for the author himself, it would be hard to describe the humble, kind, almost monk-like Asanaro. The man exudes love, contentment and friendship. To say he is unique I would be guilty of vast understatement. He would patiently answer every question of every student until there were no more. He was such an amazing teacher that even people who had not read the book learned all the movements easily during the weekend's five mini workshops. His only request was not to practice the art in front of anyone because doing so would show ego and not be true to the energy of the art, which is after all, eternal youth and vitality. On that note I must add that upon my returning my friends and colleagues and co-workers could not stop talking about how much better I looked after my weekend trip.
Let me clear up some confusion about the so-called secret part of the art of Seamm-Jasani. Each student is shown and taught all the appropriate information for their level. Each level, provides more of the art but is given as the student demonstrates the commitment to the art. There were many questions I had about things during the session and many went politely unanswered. This did not bother me, as I knew that I was simply a beginner. Some people might have a problem with that, though I can hardly imagine why. The whole process, in fact the whole art, has tremendous integrity.
Great book, excellent instruction, easy to use and most of all it truly works. You may want to find and visit the Baobom website and see when they will repeat the course. It is priced incredibly low and no where near the value it provides for a lifetime.
Worthwhile in Spite of the HypeReview Date: 2005-12-09
It seems to me that there are several key questions when trying to learn exercises from a book:
1. Are the exercises beneficial?
2. Are they explained clearly enough thru static images and words?
3. Are they presented in a way that encourages the learner to continue practicing them regularly?
I just completed the 12-week program in the Chart of Pedagogy and enthusiastically answer YES to all three questions. The system provides a thorough workout, carefully and compassionately filled with reminders not to push oneself. I found the reminders helpful because my initial stance was nowhere nearly as wide as that shown in the cover photo, but it increased as time went on. I should mention here that I'm over 50 years old.
The book has only a few minor flaws:
a. typo on page 68 (exercise 28 was already introduced in Week 3, so Week 4 should refer to exercise 35 instead)
b. exercise 11 on page 98 would be clearer if the arrow arc on the left side was swapped with the one on the right side
c. exercise 33 on page 126 has impossible arrows, which would make sense if the left and right ones were switched.
But the exercises constitute only about 100 pages of this 200-page book. If it focused exclusively on them, I'd rate it a 4 plus.
Before reaching the experiential part, the reader must wade thru more than 60 pages of background info, including an Introduction in which Asanaro portrays himself as a rebellious Prometheus who decided to teach against the advice of his guide. There is also the hype about Eternal Youth and the Art being 10,000 years old, as well as repetition of the urban legend that humans only use 10% of our brains. All this theory and preparation is chatty, but smooth narrative flow is not sufficient evidence of truth.
I suppose that having a school of meditation compels a teacher to explain how the exercises fit into broader goals, but Asanaro comes across as merely teasing: first hinting about advanced practices, then saying "That part of the art is secret and can't be taught through books." Then why mention it? In my opinion, keeping the book focused on the exercises would have been a clearer and cleaner approach, exuding the confident recognition that those who want more info will ask for it.
By the way, has anyone noticed a strong correlation in the feedback from fellow customers regarding whether a review is "helpful"? It seems that a review that gives this book 4 or 5 stars will get 90% "helpful" votes but any review that gives the book less than 4 stars gets under 50% "helpful" votes and is rebutted in a subsequent review. If someone feels disturbed by the few critical remarks I've made here, perhaps he or she should read my review of Halevi's book School of the Soul.

Great exercises to unblock stuck energy! Review Date: 2007-02-17
Most of the times we are so absorbed in what we are doing that we forget to move or even to breathe, with serious consequences to our health until we realize we need to change our habits.
The book explains through clear and easy to follow drawings and instructions 58 simple and effective exercises of breathing and movements, which now I know are essential for the free flow of energy through the body, producing immediate balance, health and well-being; of course that you need to be constant and follow the program given by the author.
I'm so happy to have discovered it! The practices have worked very good for me, proving once again that living a positive lifestyle can make a difference. Besides, the author has a corky sense of humor that really made me laugh.
I've become vital and healthy through these simple but powerful exercises, and they have absolutely given me a boost. An incredible energy practice!

Perhaps it takes a few years of physics, chemistry, and mathematics to get the fundamentals to truly understand how vibrational medicine effects and affects us. Or maybe not. I think this book is a great jumping board leading into the world of harmonics, frequencies, non-linear dynamics, chaos, and homeopathy.

500 stars. Review Date: 2007-03-08
Our lives have happily changed and improved for the better. ONE session cured my severe, chronic hormone-related Insomnia and my husband who is a smoker can breathe easier and deeper and his chest feels clear and lighter. Our sights have become very clear and vivid. MANY other ailments we had have disappeared after only a few treatments.
IT IS VERY VERY WORTH IT!
Thank you to all the pioneers who came up with this concept and creating this technology to REALLY help people!
I've heard that several Mayo Clinics are using/studying The VIBE Machine and its ability to help Cancer/Tumors...
More scientific approach to energy stuffReview Date: 2007-07-31
That said, this book is excellent for what it is. It provides tons of info and a 21 page index. Let's pick a topic at random: "Alzheimer's disease, aluminum, and" p.452 "...a significant number of patients with this disorder have high aluminum levels in brain tissue...raises the question of how safe it is to cook with aluminum..." and it goes on to explain possibilities and research being done, then goes on to discuss other potentially toxic metals.
For an example, let's look at Chapter 9. It talks about crystals and the human subtle energetic system. It discusses the history of crystals and the Atlanteans and on to today's use of crystals by healers as thought-directed energy amplifiers. Another good thing about this book: Chapter 9 is about crystals and it's 43 pages of not complex reading but not real simple either. Well, the last 2 pages of the chapter lists 14 important points to remember from the 43 pages. The book does that for each chapter. It really helps you remind yourself of the important points, so you can better assimilate what you just read, before moving on to the next chapter. By the way, the book even includes in-depth explanations of Newtonian vs. Einsteinian energy theories, for you science buffs. This is well-researched text for those interested in more detail on vibrational energy and related material.

Great Read for the Busy PersonReview Date: 2006-09-21
Even though I work with a large number of people, there are many similarities between them. The majority want to feel better and get more energy. Those are number one and number two on the list. Gordon's book supplies anyone with these two needs the answers that work!
When I first picked up the book, I must admit, I thought there couldn't be anything in there that I didn't know myself. After a read or two I was wrong and I started implementing some of the principles for awesome results. (Have you seen me speak live?! If you have, you know what I'm talking about!)
I'm not going to spoil it for Jon here, but Tip # 39 is worth the entire price of the book and more! I let all my clients know about it and it helps them reach optimal health regardless of how busy they are.
Get it and get energized!

Enjoyable, & spiritually fulfilling, thought-provoking & a remarkable soul-searching journey.
Throughout the book I found myself in an experiential process of deep self reflection & asking the big/significant questions about life, relationship & myself.
The main plot to the story is centered around 'Logan' who embarks on a remarkable journey of self-discovery that's connected with everyone & everything around him. Yet he experiences re-occuring thoughts of suicide.
Can he over-come his inner turmoil before its too late?
Logan follows a vivid dream & so his journey begins.

What a fantastic ride!Review Date: 2008-07-24
At times you're bowled over by the events, including a terrifying faceless creature, a quizzical magical dwarf on a mountaintop and premonitional dreams that come true. Besides strange unexplained happenings, you can expect a psychological and spiritual thriller that is exciting, uplifting and absorbing from the first to the last page.
What is most impressive about this book are the many spiritual insights. You even find humorous parts-the best one involves a striptease by the uptight Steven letting loose.
"Nexus" is a fascinating story about love, spirituality and paranormal occurrences. It shows the struggle of Logan Andrews through depression after the loss of his fiance to another man. He meets her again at a retreat but their meeting brings both passion and conflict to the surface.
This is a fantastic read with a great message interwoven into the story-line! A must-read for spiritual readers or anyone interested in a good story with a message.

RECOMMENDED FOR THE 'OPRAH' SHOW & HOLLYWOODReview Date: 2008-05-24
At first glance you may think that NEXUS is a simple, superficial story. Yet each time I journey through this book I find something new- an intricate, insightful and experiental process occurs. I've discovered that the authors are ingenious! Their inventive techniques create a clever 'connectedness' beween the wide spectrum of important life 'ingredients' that ultimately coalesce into an East/West, intrinsic/extrinsic, individual/social, spiritual/earthy, ancient/contemporary dialectic of quantum wisdom. Truly a fine work of art!
I must warn that if you read this book quickly, superficially, or with a closed mind then you are going to miss the entire point to the story.
I recommend NEXUS for the Oprah Show since the book & authors would certainly generate a fascinating discussion. Also NEXUS, although great as a book would be even better as a movie.

SPIRITUAL RETREATReview Date: 2008-05-08
My one criticism of the book is that it is a rather extreme, dramatic portrayal of what goes on at a spiritual, yogic retreat. From personal experience I would have to say that the emotional drama, conflict, and extreme psychological conditions of the colorful characters portrayed in the book are definitely a fictional portrayal of the usual spectrum of individuals that you would come across if you were to attend a yoga retreat. Usually a yoga retreat is calm, peaceful and inspirational and I highly recommend a week or two at least for personal rejuvenation. Let me remind you that it would be highly unlikely to come across the situations that surface in NEXUS.
However, the authors have spun a thrilling story that integrates advanced, deep spiritual/psychological/philosophical insight into a real page-turner of story.
I must give the authors credit for portraying the true to life reality of some of the challenges that people face in life. Especially important is the exploration of the reality of depression/despair and the inherent challenges in attempting to overcome this condition and the role of suffering in life. Other important and often neglected themes are touched on in this book such as death, isolation, environmental imbalance, materialism, life purpose, and expanded awareness.
Overall, wonderful and inspirational writing can be found in this book!

Excellent Resource.Review Date: 2008-08-08
The set consists of a 100 page workbook, 30 illustrated instructional cards, an audio CD of three guided meditations, a 79 minute music CD, and a 60 minute DVD video featuring instruction on hand positions and more.
Although it claims that it is a complete home learning system, I don't see how the system can stand alone as it provides none of the sacred symbols and presumes a knowledge of them.
Regardless, there may be other similarly situated materials on the market, but this set provides excellent materials for a reasonable price.
Five stars.

Reiki is a Japanese term.
Rei means something mysterious, miraculous, and sacred.
Ki means the atmosphere or something subtle or the energy of the universe.
The Japanese words Reiki can be defined as a miraculous and sacred energy of the universe, which sustains all life (Reiki is the name, used by Usui Sensei, for the universal/cosmic energy.)
Reiki is Spiritually Guided energy. Reiki is the name of the energy that is used with the System of Reiki. Reiki is the name used by Usui Sensei to the cosmic/universal energy.
-Hyakuten Inamoto Sensei(Founder of Komyo Reiki Kai)
[...]
***The word Reiki is treated as a loan word and therefore written in katakana as the kanji can be deceptive, rei also referring to the spirits of dead people or ghosts. To make things more complicated still, when spoken, the word Reiki may be understood as "cool air".
Rei: Spiritually Guided, God's Love or Light, sacred, miraculous. Rei guides the ki, the second Japanese character in the word Reiki and stands for life energy. The energy that is used to give life to God's creation.
Reiki is a healing technique that utilizes deep relaxation to calm the mind, reduce stress, relax the body, and ease the spirit. Reiki can be combined with other healing modalities.
Benefits of Reiki:
-Stress reduction
-Supports physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual well being
-Promotes qualities of loving,caring,compassion,trusting,peace,serenity
-Ease pain and discomfort
-Strengthens the immune system
-An intelligent energy that goes to the greatest need

Reiki Facts: (Hyakuten Inamoto Sensei)
This is not included in the workbook.
1. In the Western countries, it's been incorrectly said that Reiki healing method was rediscovered by Usui Sensei (founder of the Reiki Ryoho (Healing Art/Method) after researches in the Buddhist scriptures.
2. In the West, Usui Sensei is said to be a Christian minister and president of Christian based Dashisha University in Kyoto. Usui Sensei was from beginning to end a lay Buddhist.
3. Reiki healing method is to channel the energy of the universe, and an inspired healing art of Usui Sensei, NOT the outcome of his researches, or discovery, or re-discovery.
4. Traditionally there are no set hand positions except some positions on the head.
5. Once you are initiated into Reiki, Reiki healing ability will be all yours for the rest of your life.
6. Reiki energy will flow of its own accord (you cannot direct or manipulate it.)
***Reiki, the love, harmony and power to heal of the universe, does help and guide you to develop your spiritual growth for Reiki Ryoho is a spiritual path and practice.
***It is Reiki that does a fine job of healing, not YOU. (You as a Reiki practitioner do not do any healing. But you are very essential
for Reiki healing. Without you, Reiki cannot work.)
***The farther from the ego, the purer the Reiki channel will be.
***Deeds are the criteria of a good Reiki practitioner and a good Teacher. Your mental, verbal and bodily deeds, i.e., what you think, what you speak and what you do are of greatest importance.
***Komyo Reiki Kai, the system Inamoto Sensei has created, presents Reiki as it was understood and commonly practiced in the 1930's in Japan. This system places emphasis on spiritual enfoldment through the practice of Reiki Ryoho, aiming for "satori" or enlightenment.
Inamoto Sensei learned Reiki from Mrs. Chiyoko Yamaguchi who had trained with Chujiro Hayashi, one of Usui Sensei's original students.
Worth the MoneyReview Date: 2008-03-21
The Reiki workbook is both original and conventional. It is conventional in that it includes the usual explanation of what Reiki is; a brief summary of its history; an explanation and illustration of the standard Reiki hand positions; and a brief section on how Reiki has been received and accepted by the broader (scientific and medical) community. This is all interesting, if not exceptional. The material covered is a useful summary; but lacks the detail to be much more. It is therefore better suited to a Reiki beginner who hasn't read much on the subject before.
Things are more interesting when Rand deviates from the norm and either discusses his own person experiences with Reiki or illustrates various meditation techniques (most involving visualization) that help deepen your Reiki practice. Due to their more original content, both beginner and experienced practitioner have something to learn.
The 30 Reiki cards are original and useful, albeit more suited to the advanced practitioner - especially those that have practiced not traditional forms of Reiki (for instance, Rand's own Karuna reiki, Shamballa Reiki or the like). The reason for this is that many cards discuss many Reiki symbols that will either be unknown to anyone who has not studied Reiki levels 2 and 3, or unknown to those who have simply studied traditional Usui Reiki (that only contains four symbols).
The idea is for the cards to be used in a similar way to rune or tarot cards, with a practitioner using his or her intuition to choose a card that is meaningful to him or her at that present moment in time.
The cards would be slightly more useful if they were presented in a box of their own. That way they could be more easily carried around in your pocket. As it is, you need to keep them in the Reiki Touch (kit) box which is a good deal bigger than even a large book.
The DVD is more useful to beginners than advanced practitioners as, for the most part, it illustrates the basic hand positions to be used both on yourself and others. That said, most people will find at least one or two new positions that could prove useful. Also, it is interesting to see how an experienced practitioner like Rand works. That should prove useful even to some Reiki Masters.
The music CD is solid, if not exceptional. I wouldn't use it for a Reiki session since the music is a touch (but only a touch) too quick paced and not quite soothing enough; but it would be suitable background music in either a bookstore or home.
The meditation CD is probably the most interesting part of the collection. It contains three guided meditations involving visualization. These meditations involve meeting up with `enlightened beings', however, so if you don't like anything esoteric, then they may not be suitable for you. If you have an open mind, though, they should prove both interesting and useful.
A mis-named book - there are far better sources for self-healingReview Date: 2008-02-20
Diane Stein's Reiki Handbook is far more accurate but did not come with an audio when I bought it. It contains some misinformation but does include the symbols - a radical break with other books, Rand's included. Essential Reiki: A Complete Guide to an Ancient Healing Art
Hopefully the International House of Reiki will come up with an audio. Their podcasts are interesting and their e-newsletters informative. Their books contain the most current Reiki information from Japanese sources. Usui Sensei left a few students around when he died and someone finally bothered to locate them and discover what was actually taught. The Japanese Art of Reiki: A Practical Guide to Self-Healing
