This is a great book- much more simplified than any I've seen! It concentrates a lot on physical action, a definite necessity for budding actors (or old fogies trying to get back into it!). A pleasurable read!

Clear up your mistaken ideas about acting!

The Stanislavski System: The Professional Training of an Actor has been the soul of my acting teaching for 30 years. It is based on the later evolved vision of the great master teacher, as revealed to Eugene Vakhtangov and also to Sonia Moore, herself a master teacher. The approach here is clear and usable, and de-mystifies American pre-occupation with emotional substitution techniques dominant since Lee Strasberg's distortions based only upon Stanislavski's early work. This approach is accessible for young actors and is encouraging to the nurturing of their talent and development. It encourages emotional honesty without being improperly invasive, so it is good resource material for public school acting teachers and advanced students, as well as acting students from college to conservatory to proprietary school.

A good book for the method actor.

Preparing Executives for the Future
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-17
This book seeks to investigate and explain the"investments in executive development that have the biggest impact." The authors are all executives with Executive Development Associates (edanetworks.com), a leading consulting firm specializing in the strategic use of executive development.

In 2004 EDA cunducted an in depth survey with senior management of nine major companies. This book is largely the result of what these executives had to say combined with the years of experience that EDA has had in preparing specialized training classes for executives.

As people have worked their way up the organization, they have had to develop leadership and numerous other skills. At the executive level they are now faced with new challenges. These particularly involve strategic decisions for which they have not been previously responsible.

Without going into the details of the book, the problems these new executives face include directing the corporation into new organizational forms, bringing new leaders up the chain, and preparing to meet the big changes that are coming in their corporate world. For change is always coming, and to ignore it is to effectively kill the company. What will happen to your company with dramatic jumps in the price of energy? What effect will the Kyoto protocol have? These are the known challenges. You can be sure that the future has a bunch of surprises that executives will have to meet if their companies are to survive.

This book contains not the answers to these problems, but how to prepare executives to effectively face them.

Thiagi is someone with much to teach us. His games are simple, yet they WORK. At first glance, his methods seem to simple. It's in the debrief that the ah-ha's come out. The things he does maximaze the concepts of participatory education, and accelarated learning. This is organized in a way that the ideas are readily accessible when I'm designing a new course, or if I need to pull something for a workshop I am facilitating. They are also easily adaptable. It's worth every penny.

secondary or collegiate schools throughout the USA. The book is written
well and organized for ease of use. It is reasonably priced.

I bought this book to help me with my UFI to CFI-SP transition. It presents clear explanations of the content that will be covered by the test questions. It doesn't waste much time on content that is not on the test. Each and every FAA question is listed with the answers on the bottom of the page. Explanations are also given as to why each answer is right or wrong. There's no way I would have passed the written if I had not studied this book first.

A complete education for closing professionals
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-31
What I hoped to gain from this book was a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes in a title company. As a notary signing agent I am considered an extension of the title company when I'm in a closing. I wanted a manual that would give me a better knowledge of the documents I work with to help me do a better job as a remote closing agent. This far surpasses the explanations that are given in any other training manual.

There are a total of 17 chapters in this book. They take you step by step, from start to finish, through the entire closing process. Nothing is omitted. All of the documents that are involved, every step that is involved, and all of the terms that are used, are thoroughly explained. If, for example, you need to prepare a HUD Settlement Statement, Chapter 4 will show you how with a line by line description. Chapter 11 explains everything you need to know about title insurance. I especially found Chapter 9, 'The Closing', to be interesting since it describes everything that goes on in the actual closing, the role of the closer, how to handle a closing, and so much more.

This isn't the type of book that is intended to be read in one sitting, then put on a shelf. This is a desk reference that will be used each and every day. If there were a college course for title company employees, this would no doubt be the textbook used, and the only one needed. I'm sure that anyone who works in a title company will find this book indispensable. And I highly recommend it to all notary signing agents. It's a relatively small price to pay for the knowledge gained.

I can't tell you how much this book has helped me. I am new to the escrow business and just love it. Very few books are available for escrow officers or assistants (I have checked). It explains close to everything you will need to sound professional in the escrow business. I would give this book more than 5 stars if I could. Thank you Karen E. Koogler, you have made my life easier.

Reflective Teaching Yields High Results
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-19
I love this book! Its pages are filled with stories of real life individuals who have seen significant improvement in student performance as a result of professional development. Peery gives you the theory, but she doesn't stop there. She uses illustration after illustration to prove that the strategies she suggests are tried and true. This book is essential for educators serving in a staff development and/or supervisory capacity. There are actual agendas for faculty meetings and workshops included! Teachers will love this book because they will see themselves in the pages. The teaching life is very complicated and Deep Change shines light on the good and the bad. Sometimes all we want to know is that we're not alone in our struggles, and reading this book helped me connect and identify with my teaching self in a valuable way. Some of the insights have given me the courage to begin to forgive myself for some of my failings as an instructor.

What our students need

Review Date: 2004-12-11
Chock full of the kinds of common sense moves we all hope someone will someday make, this book takes the mystery out of how our students can be competitive with the world's movers and shakers, the teenaged innovators of the 21st century. Thank goodness Dr. Peery realized that common sense isn't as common as it should be, and wrote down all we need to enact in plain-speak. For our children to compete, their education needs to change. Education can only change when forward-thinking educators evolve. Even if you don't have children (even if you can't name a single person under the age of 21), you care about the future of your country. You don't need to march on Washington, or collect pennies or hold endless bake sales. Do get a copy of this book into the hands of every elementary, middle and high school principal in your area. And let that be your good deed for the decade.

Growing up as a true teacher

Review Date: 2005-09-04
This is the impression and the influence I got from reading "Developing a Professional Teaching Portfolio": that is the sense that you grow up as an individual and a teacher if you realize, think and organize in a personal and structured way your ideas, knowledge, competences and educational materials. Documentation and reflection are key words, but also originality and creativity. As a teacher and a teacher trainer I suggest this book to all my colleagues.

Excellent for Student Teachers and Professional Educators

Review Date: 2002-04-13
This book is a helpful guide for a grueling project. I have to create and maintain a portfolio throughout my year-long certification program, and I didn't really know how to get started until I discovered this book.

It outlines the areas that should be in any professional teaching portfolio, and clearly lists the types of documents that could be contained in each section. Looking at your own work with a critical eye and reflecting on what you did and how you can do better is one of the key ideas in this book.

There is a section on how to use your portfolio, and even an overview of creating an electronic portfolio. I found the examples of portfolio entries the most helpful section. It shows there are many ways to present your portfolio in creative and eye-catching ways, without being "cutsey".

The best message I got from this book is that your portfolio should not be shoved aside after you get a job, but continuously updated and reflected upon. This not only will keep you prepared if that "dream job" comes available, but it will help you grow as a professional educator. Any student teacher would find this book extremely valuable, and I believe professional educators would gain insight in revising their own portfolios.
