I am VERY disappointed with this book. Further, the title doesn't corrolate with the material covered in the book. Don't waste your money.

Good for learning how not to confuse students.

I thought this book was all right in providing material for teachers who write horrible tests. Almost any student would be able to read this book and possible find out the ways teachers write their tests and therefore they might have a better chance at doing well on tests. The author does not really give adequate information on giving students grades though. Where the subject of grading is difficult in the best conditions, he does not provide much help in that area. There is also a typo on page 110.

If you're looking (as I was) for information about THE independent certification program for computer professionals (offered by the Institute for Certification of Computer Professionals, ICCP), look elsewhere. ICCP is mentioned only once in passing. Mostly this book is a promotion of the Drake testing network, through which you can arrange to take the certification tests reviewed in this book. More self-promotion than objective information (Drake compiled the information in the book). But there is some value in the discussion of the value of certification (biased in favor, but so am I). And if you're considering Microsoft or Novell certification you might be suprised to see all the other companies (from Apricot to IBM) you could consider

This book was required for OT graduate school. This book has not been applied to any of my classes, and the content in it seems like common sense. I haven't viewed any other books on professional development so i don't know how it compares, however, this book didn't tell me anything new and wasn't worth buying.

Not for seniors or those with limited budgets or space

I heard Paul Goldman discuss "the Lean Look" on a radio show and was enthused by his description of the program --particularly his comments that the exercises could be done at home with "bands" and "tubes" by anyone who could walk. The Product Description repeats the claim that the Lean Look program "requires no fancy equipment." To my dismay, the program requires:
dumbbells at a cost ranging from $250 to $500 (unless you opt for a cheaper set with adjustable weights that are "an especially poor choice for the circuit workouts") or work out at a gym;
an "exercise bench" with cost starting at $50 or go to a gym;
cable resistance equipment with starting cost of $36 for a door gym with elastic cable (but best is a weighted set starting at $1,000) or work out at a gym;
and a stability ball with costs only $25 to $45 but difficult to store and transport or go to a gym.
So, unless you have an extra room and a few hundred dollars to invest, plan to purchase a gym membership.
Other issues include:
the workout schedules are in minute type that are difficult to read and require reference to prior pages thus defeating the goal of minimizing time between workouts;
some exercises using the stability ball and exercise bench could be dangerous for seniors whose strength and balance may be compromised;
the meal and supplement suggestions are unrealistic for anyone on a limited food budget.
On the bright side, if you are young with discretionary time and income and want to get in shape, this book may be for you.

This book is so difficult to understand, where is this guy coming from. It leaves everthing to intuition, if the profile lookes correct the market can still either go up or down so were back to sqare one, I think your better off looking at candlestick charts to interpret profiles etc.

BETTER OPTIONS OUT THERE!!!!!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-05
I bought this book because I loved the NMS Q&A for family practice and figured if the question book is this good then imagine what the text will be like. The book is set up in outline fashion with sentence descriptions (not bullet points like Step-Up/First Aide) but many have little computer mouse icons next to them. This means go online and look at the text online. Problem is the text is not yet available online. I've e-mailed the publishers but I can't imagine that will do anything at all. Also the review questions at the end of each section are not very difficult (and definitely not the quality of Q&A family practice). Overall the book is good but it really needs the missing information (the mouse icons) to be complete. I would say us Step-Up when studying for the Shelf exam or boards and not NMS Medicine, atleast not until they get the online text working!!!!

Complex way to do a simple task.

The amount of detail is this book drowns out any overall message on the proper way to create operating procedures. No plant could ever actually follow all the recommendations, steps, and layers listed. (A collegue stated that his calculus text book was easier to read.) However, the mind numbing detail is basically correct and properly focused on what plant workers should have in a useful procedure. Too much clutter with peripheral issues like how to get your boss to approve your project. A big weakness is the focus on document formats and document production methods optimized for printing on paper. Process plants are moving en-mass to computerized document management and delivery systems. This book does not explain how to format documents for optimum presentation on a computer screen. Also missing is any useful discussion of management of change methodologies to keep documents current.

Have you ever picked up a book and not been able to set it down? Don't worry, this isn't one them. Dry and ever meandering from one unrelated topic to the next, I felt confusion after just a brief reading period. Thankfully it was fairly inexpensive, and luckily for me another training book I own was able to fill the voids (and yes there are expansive voids).

It's your money, but don't look here for original thoughts.

This book was written under the aegis of the teacher-education program I am attending. But even here, it is widely regarded as pretty poor. It gives silly advice about how important it is for student teachers to exercise, to dress professionally, and to arrive a few minutes early. Some of the lists of suggested books are helpful.

Way too many errors!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-28
I bought the book a couple of years ago & started reading it. After a few chapters I stopped because I was too disgusted with the large number of errors, which included both typos & obviously incorrect information (e.g. byte claimed to be 16 bits long). I have subsequently bought, read, & recommend both the Simon Roberts book and the Bill Brogden book. Personally, I think the Roberts book is better.

The best book I have ever read, including the Bible

Ladies and gentlemen,

Never in the course of history has someone contributed in such a significant manner to the furthering of mankind. Mr. Jardin has outdone even Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in thrusting himself into the limelight as a leader of all humanity. With a clever combination of technical "boo-boos" interspersed with a collage of typographical errors, Mr. Jardin has kept apace with if not surpassed such literary and scientific talents as Hawthorne, Ibsen, Arthur C. Clarke, Steven Hawking and Snoop Doggy Dog. Java is truly the world's language; "C.J." has found new and exciting interpretations into not only the Java programming language but also the English "speaking" language.
Had I more resources, I would purchase all available remaining copies; had I more ability, I would praise Mr. Jardin in even loftier terms. And Mr. Jardin can use all of your help -- he is currently a down-and-out developer living on the streets of downtown San Diego writing code for food. Please give back to Cary, if for no other reason than for all that he has given to us in this timeless, never-ending book for the ages, destined to outpace the Bible as the most influential work in existence today.

This book is so poor I have been forced to take New Riders press off our recommended book sellers list. It is obvious that it has never been looked at by a technical editor.

What is even worse is that New Riders and Macmillan Computer Publishing have not issued any update or even errata for the text.

Purchase the Boone or Roberts/Heller text instead.

Oh My God!
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-01
I just spent two days working through the first five chapters of the book. At first, the typos were amusing, but after a while, they became extremely frustrating and tedious. I must admit, I learned a lot cross-checking the gargage that he was dishing out. I can not believe that New Riders wouldn't publish an errata sheet for this book. It's a published rough draft that was never was never seen by a technical editor--an absolute embarrassment for New Riders and Cary Jardin. I blame New Riders and will avoid their publications.

I guess I've gotta shop for another book, now. You should, too.
