If you're looking for a book which will enable you to grasp the concepts of adult learning in the 21 century then The Adult Learner is a must read. Covering the latest perspectives on adult learning this book contains practical information relevant to any field of education. The Adult Learner addresses more than just the theories of adult learning, it provides timely solutions to empower those who desire to transform the learning experience.

A classic, but it does not use its own advice.

Malcolm S. Knowles is the founder of the theory of Andragogy (Adult Education), and I agree with him on many of the points he makes.

The problem is that the book seems to have been written for academics to accept Malcolm's theories, and not written for students who wanted to learn to be better teachers in Adult Education.

Unless you have to use this book for a textbook for a class, I would not buy it as your first introduction to Adult Education. I'm not sure which book I would buy, but someone must have written a better one to actually learn the subject!

A little background: I am not a college professor or corporate HR director, so to some degree there are things in this book that were lost on me for that reason, HOWEVER...

...I am an author, an independent instructor for adult learners, and a college graduate with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communications, so I do know something about good writing hopefully. I purchased this book to gain insight into the motivations behind adult learners. Why do some go back to college even when their job does not require it? What motivates them? How do they learn compared to teenagers, etc? What techniques are best in a classroom full of adults? And FWIW I have been able to glean some useful bits of information in these respects. But this book could be so much more, if the authors would simplify the writing style. Get out of your own way and tell the story! Let me explain further...

My biggest problem with this book is that it reads like a college thesis. I always value and appreciate a well annotated work that references other respected works, however this book goes completely overboard. In some chapters, almost every page is a pulled quotation from another work or book. There are so many references as to be distracting to the reader IMO. The original point being discussed (and its relevance to the person teaching adults), is often lost and you have to go back and read again so you haven't wasted your time.

The information itself is sometimes helpful and enlightening, but buried among wordy descriptions, run-on sentences and frankly, verbal pomp. And though I recognize this book is geared towards those in HR development (companies that teach their employees IOW), there are clearly parallel lessons to be learned for anyone teaching adults, regardless of the environment (work, leisure or vocational). I think for instructors like myself this book is simply not approachable enough, though there are some very good nuggets of info to be found and applied to our work. You just have to dig and re-read more than anyone should have to, in order to process that information.

Since the term "andragogy" was first coined, several theoretical schools have developed around the topic of adult learning. This book provides a context for Knowles' ideas about andragogy and demonstrates the relevance of his ideas in the 21st century.

Strength in many approaches

I found this book to be infinitely helpful in toilet training my daughter. Because the author presents four different methods of potty training, she isn't obligated to advocate her method and dismiss competing methods as "wrong". Acknowledging that there are many correct ways to toilet-train a child is something that few authors have the latitude or courage to admit. This book also presents practical, non-judgemental advice regarding which method may work best in different family situations. After reading about all the approaches, I was able to fashion an approach that was consistent with my parenting style and worked well with my daugher's personality.

This book is part of the "Everything" series of books, so you would expect it to have a little bit of "everything" about potty training in it. Unfortunately, I had to read the entire book to find out that the author's clear bias towards infant potty training continues into the sections on toddler training. I was hoping for a less opinionated book, one with more general information.

I think this was a good first book for parents about to tackle potty training. While as some have posted the author does clearly think infant training is best, other methods are also clearly presented and outlined. Use this book as a starting point. It outlines a few major methods. From this you should be able to decide which method you want to use and then focus your next book purchases.

Focus on infant potty training

The author clearly believes you should train an infant and not use diapers. But then there isn't a clear plan for training a baby. This is kind of a mix of lots of ideas without a committment to one specific plan. Kind of confusing, not too helpful.

Keep an open mind when you read this book

I had to make a comment about those reviewers that gave this book a low rating. Dr. Sonna's approach on potty training may seem different to many, but it is very, very effective. Her so called "bias" is to train kids in a different way than what we are accustomed here in the USA. If you are buying this book it's because you are needing help in this area. Maybe her advice is the advice you don't want to hear, because you've been approaching potty training with no results, and feel you couldn't possibly be doing it wrong. Some of the people who negativiley criticize this book because it's teaching a different approach to toilet train probably would criticize their doctor for perscribing a pill that cures an illness that is causing pain, when all they wanted is a pain killer. If you ever travel abroad you quickly learn that here in the US our kids are toilet trained much later than anywhere else in the world. Her pointers, suggestions, and even, thank God, her humor really help you deal with what is really not a fun and messy issue in child rearing. Throw out your (mis)-conceptions on potty training, open your mind to a different approach, buy this book, and follow the advice. The bottom line is: IT WORKS! And isn't the whole point in buying this book to find a method the works?

In my opinion this book is out of date and specific to retail car sales. The tips in this book may be applicable to selling cars in 1970-80; however, in this decade, people buy cars because they have strong research done, not because the car sales person is the greatest sales guy in town. I do not think you can find any tips in this book specific to selling products in the corporate setting (business to business sales).

I used this book to help me study for the exam, however there are several confusing in Questions and answers section. For example, one of the questions was talking about Windows 98/ME while the answer were talkiing about Windows 95 in chapter one exam. Some of the questions will make you think twice before you can answer.

I have been working on computers for a number of years. Reading the chapters helps me to find some additional stuff that I did not know. I think it is useful for reading.

I also got myself Exam Cram 2 to help me verify some information that I think were missing a few in other book. I just use this book for backup.

Lately I have been ordering books from Sybex for my future MCSE exams which I was told they are the best. I read some and found them great. I did not bother to order some from QUE for my future exams.

This book starts out great, but it seems that the author got a little tired towards the end of the book as the details starts dropping. By the time you reach the end of the book, it seems that you just read a summary of Windows XP, not a book that prepares you for the exam. My rate any MSCE type book using Microsoft Press' version as the "average". This one defintely falls below average in terms of technical information. However, there are not a lot of MSCE book available...so it gets two stars instead of one. Get the Microsoft Press' version to prepare for the 70-270.

So, I'm supposed to believe that 736 pages can contain all the needed materials to prepare someone for the MCP exam 70-270. Also that this one book will cover all the aspects of the test, while providing step by step instructions to help reinforce each learning objective; not to mention review questions after each chapter plus a cd with a practice exam. This is what I'm supposed to believe...

If it wasn't Que, I couldn't believe it!

I have used the New Riders MCSE study guides all the way through my MCSE study preparation, usually in conjunction with the Coriolis Exam Cram series. I found this book to be very light on technical content, and to contain several errors. This is very annoying and confusing when you do not know enough about a subject to be sure that you have just discovered an error. I am currently looking for additional study material for exam 70-219 as I do not feel confident after reading this book. This is a good general introduction to AD design, but look elsewhere for substance. The Exam Gear test questions do not seem anywhere near as challenging as the Microsoft Test PEP questions that I have purchased, which leads me to further doubt the content of this book.

Good reference book...

I purchased these books for my MCSE course curriculum and was very disappointed . This book does very little to prepare students for the 70-219 exam. They find it very dry, and lacking in the implemtation and technical aspects of designing an AD infrastructure. This is more of a business application book, and would be good reading for consultants and network engineers with experience and the technical aspects already mastered.

This book ia a must have for anyone who is in the industry as a Consultant or Systems Engineer. Mr. Archer has done a tremendous job of bringing an overwhelming amout of information into a concise, well structured and easy to read book. Some of the reviews I have read have knocked this book on the amount of technical information. These readers should have read the introduction of this and the other "design" books which clearly state that the core technical information is in the administering ... training guides. If you do not have a grasp of the technical skills, how can you possibly hope to design a solution.

This book is exactly what Microsoft wants. Microsoft wants IT people to start thinking of the business and that's how you structure the Active Directory. I read this book cover to cover, got the Transcender demo, and some other Internet study "guides". This book got me a pass on the exam. Yes the first chapters are not on the exam but the thought process is. Chapters 10-14 are the meat of this and if you do the book and the exercises you will have gone a long way to pass the exam. The transcender demo shouwed me what the exam looked like (the new format) but was not that helpful, dumps and guides were OK to refresh the book, but when I took the exam I got case studies that were on the dumps but the questions were different, the name was the same but the solution had changed. You still have to reason through this to pass and this book helps you see what is going on with DNS, Group Policy and Active Directory design option.

Legitimate Start.

Review Date: 2007-10-31
This book takes off to a good start. The tone is straightforward. The first three elements in the sales process are focused on improving the odds that the prospect will spend time with us. Seeing things from the other person's point of view is the backbone of the "Sales Advantage" approach to selling.

The content in this book does a good job selling itself to you while it teaches you how to sell to others. However, being a partial offshoot of "How to Win Friends and Influence People" you tend to find the same excessive rambling you found in this earlier work.

The Sales Advantage tools and principles can energize your selling efforts. They can empower you, challenge you, and give you a new level of confidence in your sales abilities. The objective of The Sales Advantage is to strengthen the performance and behavior of salespeople. The concepts provide a repeatable sales process that helps salespeople to sell from a buyer's point of view.

Written in step-by-step form, the Sales Advantage will enable any person in sales to design a win-win selling model. This how-to guide has chock full of examples covering a gamut of sales undertakings. Your attitude makes all the difference in whether the tools will motivate you to build the solid customer-focused relationships you need for long-term success in selling.

Learning how to sell using the Sales Advantage tools and principles will increase the odds that we will overcome sales challenges successfully. How? By learning to see the buying and selling process from the customer's point of view.

FEW IDEAS:

1) Get around people who are passionate about selling.

2) Read, Watch, and listen to inspirational material.

3) Talk to customers who love the product or service you sell.

4) Write out your vision and invest yourself emotionally in your job.

THREE THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:

1) You get the sales advantage by learning how to use the tools and principles.

2) You keep the advantage by committing to practicing the use of the tools, day in and day out, until they become second nature.

3) You sell more than ever by having the right attitude about selling, by building customer-focused relationships, and by looking for ways to get out of your comfort zone and try something different.

A human relationship approach to sales

In any field, sales people must deal with people. There is no Mr. IBM or Ms. Microsoft - there are just people. We make sales too complicated when we overlook that people do the purchasing, even in complex teams - people just want someone to listen to their needs and provide a solution with some integrity. Dale Carnegie's Human relations approach boils it all down to sincerely trying to see things from the buyer's point of view, and just be honest! Wow - what a concept! It's important to read "How to win friends" first to really get the human relationship princples down pat. Then read this book - and then go make some sales!

J. Oliver Crom and Michael Crom have written a very good book for sales professionals who are on a learning curve, particularly newcomers and those with intermediate sales experience. Although veterans might know most of the new ideas here, the authors present valuable concepts in the excellent prospecting section and in the review of how to close a sale. The book presents a somewhat institutional Dale Carnegie approach to sales, including a strong emphasis on maintaining a positive attitude and a customer-centered approach. The section on overcoming objections could be juiced up a bit and many of the illustrative anecdotes could be developed more richly, but the book supplies significant expertise for newer sales professionals - and that alone, we believe, should make it an easy sell.

This is a good introductory work for a salesperson or
someone opening his/her own business. The author teaches
how to develop credibility, interest, stories, instructional
approaches, needs analysis and a host of other components aimed
at cultivating customer sales. Later on, the work builds
upon a negotiation scheme involving information gathering,
resolution of concerns, conflict resolution, collaboration,
customer needs and multiple solution sets in order to produce
a successful sale through advanced negotiation techniques.
The thrust of the work teaches how to gain and cultivate
customer commitments. The book is a good introductory
rendition for budding salespeople. It will provide reinforcement
for experienced salespeople.

As an agent for one of the largest life insurance companies in the world, I am always looking for "THAT" book which will reveal a missed point that can give the edge over my very capable competition. When I saw this I thought this might be it. After reading this book, my search must continue. The book may hold some value for someone brand new to the field of sales, but for anyone who has sold for more than a few months, the teachings are old hat with no nuggets to be found. I have other Carnegie books and this one is not worthy to be on the shelf beside the others. I would recommend books by Tracy or maybe "SuperSelf" by Charles Givens. Now there is a book to chew on for days. My advice, save your money and buy something else.

I am a newbie to the IT field. I have no experience whatsoever with WIN2000 products. I am familiar with WIN98SE that is it. So I was a little worried about a self-paced program. I ordered the book. Best decision I could have made. If I find the book easy to follow then you will too. Do I recommend you use this book exclusively to take your test? Of course not. Instructor led classrooms wouldn't and neither should you. However, if you are planning to prepare for the certifications on your own and are willing to use the information available on the WWW or at the library to supplement your studies then I highly recommend this book. I have not taken the test yet. I'm still not ready, but I KNOW that I will do well with the help of this book. Good luck to you in your own studies. We'll be collegues soon enough!

Common sense tells us that who would know more about a product then it's inventors. Who whould be better to teach us about that product then the inventors. Well Microsoft has not and does not believe in common sense. you rely on this book to pass the test or to know anything pratical about 2000 and buddy you're in for a world of hurt. It leaves out significant details and aspects of 2000 that are need for a complete understanding of 2000. Yes, what little detail and knowledge it prvides are accurate, but they are so few. Old Billy Gates again with a half attempt like everything he does. It seems their idea of common sense is: Well we charge $135 a test and sell the book for $45 and since they'll never pass the test on the first or second try then we'll make a bundle. Save your money and save your time. Buy the Sybex book for preparation for the test.

Very good book. Easy to work with just one computer with this book. I passed the 76-210 REFRESH Win2K Exam with this book and the Exam Cram2 Windows 2000 Professional book.

I followed almost all of the labs in this book on one computer. Great labs. Didn't notice any big errors in this book. Saw some earlier concerns about the Index of this book. I just followed the chapters cover-to-cover and the test was a breeze. I think there might be some "sour grapes" about not passing the test and blaming the book. I never even looked at the index to see if there were errors
I passed the 4-hour, 76-210 Refresh Win2k Exam with this book in less than 3 hours. I would strongly consider this book if you are on a budget, have one computer, and want to pass the Exam. Plus there is a 15% off the Exam coupon in the back.

I could fill a book with what is not explained or is surfed over in this book. You probably should buy it, but look for supplementary material. I used this book in a class structure. But had to buy two other books to get a well rounded picture of the Windows 2000 client O/S.
In case you are wondering, I took and passed the big test. Further, I still use this book as a reference, but only for general information. For detail, I use "another book" by a famous author of Windows 2000 books. This does not bode well for the content of this book. But without the structure of this book; don't risk your hard earned bucks seeking Microsoft's blessing.

Since I work for Intel and support the HW and ASIC engineers who design CPLD, FPGAs, ASICs, etc. I decided to purchase this tutorial to get an understanding of the concepts needed for this specific field. I had high hopes for this course especially after reading some of the reviewer's comments. I must say I am deeply dissappointed I paid so much money for a tutorial that is filled with numerous errors. There are so many errors in Streams 2 and 3 that I worry about the other Streams. Streams 2 and 3 are supposed to supply you with the basics, however they are so flawed that many examples contradict themselves. As I stated I am new to this so as I was reading I came across many examples that build on the previous ones that just didn't make sense in terms of how the verilog code was written. I am lucky I work with top-notch ASIC engineers who have been very helpful in answering my questions. Without them I would be so lost in the course contents. These professionals have made known to me their disappointment in a Verilog tutorial that is so prone to inconsistencies and errors. If the basic building blocks to this course are abundant with errors then what does it mean about the rest of the course? As to the other reviewers who gave it 4 or more stars I have just one question for them ---what are you smoking? (because there is no way we can be talking about the same course). If they actually say they learned Verilog based on this course then I would be very wary of their basic understanding of the foundational concepts. In closing the author has not done a good job in reviewing the material content. He stated in his introductory comments his thanks to his team in reviewing the entire course. I pose to all of you that his team failed him miserably. I expect better from individuals who consider themselves experts in this field.

The licenced tools that come with this cd-rom like leanordo specturm is not supported anymore by model, and also the modelsim.

There is no point in buying this cd-rom at this price only for the tutorial and examples, which you can get them online anyway for free.

I had a real bad experience with the publisher and the author who never replies to emails.

I was very dissapointed after getting this cd-rom and had to return it, still waiting for my money..!!

This is a very well done work. It includes a vast collection of practical examples in various fields of digital design, and is a handy and yet rich reference material for both Digital Hardware Engineers and students. The presentation of the material is creative, making the training process more pleasant.
Most importantly, the CD integrates all the necessary design tools in a single platform with the licensing supports of industrial leading edge EDA vendors.
I believe Dr. Navabi and his team's effort in providing a promising training package for Verilog lovers at different levels of experience, has been successful.

Great learning tool.

I have learned a lot about Verilog from the time I first received this training material. What made this package successful for me are both the presentation material and the software tools available for hands on practice. First of all, the package comes with simulation and synthesis tools from well-known software manufacturers. You get to install your own choices of simulation tools, and if you are not sure which software to install, there are suggestions from the manual. However, some software do have a one year expiration date and they require a network card. Also, make sure your network card is plugged into the network hub, otherwise, the software could not detect the NIC ID. Other than that, the software installation went smoothly for me and was able to get up to speed in utilizing the software tools with some cursory material which is presented as part of the lesson plan.
The presentation material is didactic and the instructions are easy to follow. There are a plethora of circuits examples, and each circuit example is always accompanied by a logic diagram or block, the Verilog code that describe the logic diagram and the testbench that simulates the end result of the logic diagram described. At the end of every sequence, there will be a project given and it is totally optional to the user whether or not to take up the exercises. The answers to the projects are given and are posted under the author's website. Also, at the end of every stream, there are some short quizzes for further reinforcement to the subject discussed.
Overall, I find this package to be really useful and effective in learning the Verilog design and its unequivocal that Dr. Navabi and his team has done a great job in putting this package together for those of us who are interested in learning the Verilog design language.

Never before has a Cisco book covered so many protocols so poorly in so little space. I actually felt more confused about IS-IS after reading this book than I did before I started. The coverage of other protocols is little better. The author's frequent grammatical slip-ups render many sentances open to contracdictory interpretations. On the whole, I would recommend the CCIE Routing TCP/IP Volumes I and II before this book. There are some good chapters here and there in the book, and some good information you won't find elsewhere, but the middle chunk of the text is a waste. So much of this book is a bad rehash of what the CCNP or CCIE candidate will have already studied elsewhere as to make the reading experience as a whole discouraging.

Yes, it's a good one.

This book is about 560 pages long, and aproximately first 300 pages describe briefly Internet evolution and basics of IP protocols. It's a pretty interesting stuff, the content is good and style is o.k. too, but you can read it anywhere and I'd say there is nothing special there. The real value of this book in the last 260 pages. There are a few case studies, and it's something really unique. I was very surprised that I've never thought about some issues specific to very large networks. Hub and spoke network design for 800 routers is pretty much different from the 80 routers network. I think there are very few people in the world who are working on so high level and it's very interesting just to take a look at the problem examples they meet in their work.

Probably, this book won't help much in your everyday work, and probaly you'd expect more large network specific information. Of course, I wouldn't recommend you to read this book in the very beginning of your networking career. But if you 've got a strong networking backgroung and you're looking for more advanced design tutorials, this book, especially last 200 pages, would be very helpful.

Good, but supplement your reading with the relevant RFCs

I used this book to understand Cisco's BGP4 implementation. And I thank my lucky stars that I'd read RFC 1771 first!

Overall, this book does a good job of explaining the various knobs that Cisco supports for the protocols discussed. However, in attempting to also cover the bits and bytes of these protocols, the book makes far too many mistakes.

For instance, on page 269, when discussing BGP's UPDATE message, the book says that the Withdrawn Routes field consists of, "... triples, with length being one octet, and indicates the number of octets in the prefix field." First of all, the so-called "" construct is not a "triple"! Second, the length element does not indicate the "number of octets" in the prefix field, rather, it indicates the number of significant bits!

On the other hand, this book does a much better job of explaining various protocol features at a high level. In particular, its discussion of BGP4 path attributes is very good. Much better than RFC 1771 in fact!

In summary, get your bits and bytes from the RFCs and use this book to understand when to tweak the Cisco's knobs for its various protocol implementations.

Khalid is one of the best network designers I have ever met. His book is excellent technically, and is both clear and concise. This is not a book for the faint hearted - a good knowledge of routing protocols and network design is a must. For those who are experienced network engineers, trying to "go to the next level", this is a MUST HAVE.

Editing seems to have been limited to running the text through a spell checker. Page 69 refers to "a Frame Rely network". Page 72 explains that an ISDN BRI provides "two barrier channels".

Frequently diagrams include acronyms for which no explanation is offered, as if the figure was shoveled in from somewhere else. There is no glossary of acronyms and many are missing from the index.

An entire chapter is spent on RIP1, with redundant statements about the lack of VLSM support and obsolete status.

My experience was that issues of technical sublety were as often muddied as they were explained.

There is good info in this book, too, but considering the Cisco name, I expected much better.

As a college student I find this book to be very dry reading. The explanations and definitions are accurate which is its only saving grace. Very frustrating to read and memorize when you find yourself wasting time simply trying to understand the sentence.

I used this book for a Public Administration Research Methods course and found the techniques to be equally applicable to the public sector. The case example, a story that progresses with each chapter, is imaginative and provides a setting where each technique can be practically applied. The writing is sharp, concise, and reads with a cadence that holds the attention. Of all the research methods texts I've used, this is undisputably one of the best.

VERY Thorough but Cumbersome...

"Business Research Methods" is a very thorough text describing the research process and is ideally suited for MBA programs or public administration programs. While a thorough text (no stone is left unturned), it does have a major drawback - namely its size and accessibility.

THE GOOD:

Cooper and Schindler offer up a thorough text which takes the reader/student through the complete research process from start to finish. Again, it is very detailed about the research process and any student who can make it through the text will come away from a very solid grounding in the research process. The research process is well described and real life examples abound through case studies which bring the topics close to home.

THE BAD:

At about 700 pages the text is VERY cumbersome and quite the chore to finish. The great thing about this book is that it is very detailed. The problem with this though, it that it is TOO detailed. The writing, while thorough, can probably best be described as "bland" (like the subject itself). Research methods, more than likely, DOES NOT top most students' list of favorite courses to take no matter how smart or motivated they are. Having a humongous tome of a subject that is not all that popular or accessible probably does not score points with most people. Research methods for most is an archaic subject, very difficult to understand or enjoy. This text, because of the subject matter, its size and bland tone, will probably fly over the heads of most students. If you are a student planning to read this book or if you are an instructor thinking of using this text, keep this in mind.

This textbook was used as one of the texts for a graduate level research methods course I took. The vast majority of those in my class (myself included) barely did any of the readings from this text. It was a very "dry" read.

THE VERDICT:

While Cooper and Schindler do an awesome job of covering the ins and outs of the research process, I find it unlikely most students will actually take the time to read this. This book, while thorough, is just not that accessible to the average student. If you are an instructor, think to yourself, when you were a student would YOU have read a 700 page, hard to read, book on a subject that you probably at best didn't really care about all that much?

For an alternative text of this subject I recommend Leedy and Omrod's "Practical Research."

It is safe to say that on a whole, when it comes to buy back time at the college bookstore, this book will probably be in "near mint" condition for most students.

Mild Recommendation

Cooper & Schindler provide an easy-to-understand approach to conducting research for business, or other related fields such as public administration. In developing this latest revision, the authors consider both the academic and applied researcher with a presentation strongly grounded in scientific methods and statistical techniques. The authors' straightforward writing style and in-depth content make this guide an excellent resource text for use in any business or public administration research methods course.

Well structured but dull

The text is structured well for teaching purposes but the cases and
vignettes all relate to one ongoing example which gets quite
complex. Also, it means you have to take the chapters in the order
given and none other, otherwise the cases don't make much sense....
