Book is more Sales than Engineering oriented

The book is interesting but I think that the author deals with sales and outside customer position than the internal engineering aspect. Does not really seem to reflect the transition from an engineer to a engineering manager aspect which deals more witht the internal working of an industry.

Remarkable Insights in Engineering Management

I found Dr. Aucoin's book "From Engineer to Manager: Mastering the Transition" to be incredibly insightful based on my 16+ years of experience, and plan to add this book to my personal library for future reference. I have been fortunate to have worked in multiple disciplines in the commercial nuclear power industry and can easily relate to Dr. Aucoin's topics and perspectives. The wealth of information in this book "hits the nail on the head" time and time again. Not only does Dr. Aucoin cover the technical bases extremely well, he also provides an in-depth perspective in understanding the complex aspects of managing human beings, beginning with being good managers of ourselves. This balanced approach will serve the aspiring engineering manager well in his or her career. Unlike many technical reads, "From Engineer to Manager" was an entertaining and truly enjoyable read.

I am currently in a master's class with 9 other teachers. We are creating a course for teachers who have or will be working with a student teacher. We all LOVED this book. It is not overwhelming, it is user friendly, helpful, and realistic. It is simple to use and organized well! We are using this book as a guideline for our class syllabus. The diversity of the reproducible forms save time and prevent any teacher from re-inventing the wheel. Highly recommended!!!!

Rather basic

I was somewhat disappointed in this book. As a supervisor of student teachers I had hoped it would be more thorough and helpful but I found most of the information too basic to be relevant to my situation. It would be most useful for someone who had no experience with student teachers. One nice aspect of the book is that the pages are reproducible and many of them are forms which can be used over and over.

Question sets by organ system
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-13
This is a good book to review for the Step 1 of the USMLE. It is divided into 8 Organ system sections and each subsection consists of clinical scenarios describing a common disease that affects the specific organ system followed by 3 questions regarding the anatomy/physiology/normal processes involved plus one question about the pathophysiology. The explanations are OK. This books would be excellent if they had included at least 6 questions per case and if the explanations section had some diagrams.

Great book for USMLE Step 1

This was a great book. I got it during second year of medical school. It has a lot of good cases and with Step 1 becoming case based, this was very useful. There are quesions and explanations after each case. I highly recommend it if you like to study by a case based method or if you are preparing for the boards Step I and/or II.

A solid introduction to Distance Learning
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-07
This book is for those who want to learn more about distance learning, but don't know where to begin. The title of the book says "An Implementation Guide for Trainers and Human Resources Professionals" but this book would be helpful to any manager involved in distance learning, whether it is developing a program or evaluating the feasibility of implementation. Chapters include basic overviews of audio, video and web-based learning, determining if your company is ready and program design & delivery. The book includes some valuable information about the differences between the different methods of distance learning. This is a no-nonsense approach without a lot of fluff, but offers some sensible, solid content and a good introduction to the topic. Recommended.

Average MCSE Study Guide 2.5 stars out of 5

The book fell short on many areas of the test such as ISP and Content developer sections. It also did little to expalin the AVS section compaired to questions asked on the exam. There are MANY, MANY technical errors in the book so watch out. This book is good as a secondary study aid and IMOH should not be relied on as the primary source for studing for test 70-079. I received a 531 out of 1000 on my first attempt at taking the sylvan test. I have only failed 1 other test during my quest for my MCSE

Good, but you also need hands-on experience.

This was the only training and reference tool I used to prepare for the MCSE exam for Internet Explorer Administration Kit. The exam is fairly new, and training materials are not as well developed as other exams. Nevertheless, this book does a good job of preparing you for the exam. Although I have yet to see a book that is organized the way I like, this book is well organized, the exam objectives are clearly marked, and the included CD is very good as well. The CD includes two versions of the same test, one that will provide the correct answers, and one that won't. Why there are two, I don't know, since you don't have to see the answers if you don't want to, and they draw from the same question pool. There is also a tool called Flashcards, but I couldn't get it to run, and kept receiving a "#div/0" error. The test is very good and does a decent job mimicing the MS exam.

As the author clearly points out in the book, you also need hands-on experience prior to! the actual exam. The only way to get hands-on experience is to first install IE4.01, then download the Administration Kit. If you are accessing the internet over any modem, download times are quite long.

For what it's worth, I passed the test on the first try after using this book for only a week.

"Mentoring" is of great use in the private sector: MIS

I am responsible for overseeing the implementation and maintenance of several important aspects of the Management Information System for a large multi-national company. Among other things, my job involves training and mentoring a sizable staff of MIS specialists; some veterans, others new to the field or to our company. Although I am not a teacher, I read "Mentoring New Teachers" by Hal Portner hoping to gain some insights on how to do this part of my job. Since many of the discussions, exercises and tips in the book seemed to relate directly to my situation, I decided to try them out. I was not disappointed! Especially useful were the chapters that dealt with establishing and maintaining productive mentoring relationship, and on how to coach employees in such a way that they gain the confidence and understandings to act productively on their own. I expect "Mentoring New Teachers" is very helpful to teachers, but I also highly recommend Portner's book as a "must read" to my counterparts in the private sector.

Solid, but outdated

This is a good book to learn the basics of networking from. Sadly, it is extremely outdated (it has a lot of details about Token Ring, for example, and focuses on NT 4) and has not received a refresh. But if you are looking for a comprehensive book to learn the rock bottom fundamentals of networking, this is a decent choice. I am sure that there are comparable, modern books out there, but I am not aware of them off hand.

Excellent Resource, well worth every cent !!!

This is the 2nd kit I have used from Microsoft Press in pursuit of the MCSE certification. I have been throughly satisfied with the quality that goes into these kits, the interactive portion of the kits gives the novice a chance to actually view the product more indepth! I passed the exam on the first attempt with a 900 out of a possible 1,000. I used this kit and the Microsoft Readiness Review book by James Semick. I would personally recommend Microsoft kits to anyone seriously pursuing a professional certification in a high tech field. Kerry Salter, A+,MCP

This book is useful for many different people involved in education: teachers, future teachers, administrators who support teachers, teacher educators, etc. It includes chapters from preeminent researchers in the field and covers many different areas in education. Each chapter reviews research in the area, and the language is not techno-speak meant to be accessible only to people who spend their lives doing research (my biggest pet peeve with many research articles and chapters). I am a teacher and graduate student. I checked this out from the library and found myself returning it so many times that I decided to go ahead and buy a copy for myself.

I took pathophysiology and had a full sized textbook for that, and when I went back to this book as a double-check or a reference, realized that it does not always offer much. There were a lot of paragraphs where I could tell they were playing that game of filling space rather than doing the hard work of researching what needs to be said and in what detail. But it's not a bad book.
