The 3rd edition of the Handbook of Training Evaluation and Measurement Methods is the most comprehensive text on the process to evaluate training programs. The book is used in organizations as well as colleges and universities to help practitioners and managers of training evaluation understand the process as well as the importance of evaluating all training programs. If it's worth doing -- it's worth measuring! This book is definitely worth buying!

Many books on program evaluation focus on complicated techniques, theories, and processes. Phillips' 'Handbook' presents training evaluation in a practical, useful manner. Each chapter clearly presents the whys and hows of training evaluation. He presents the research fundamentals, but also considers the feasibility of many processes used by researchers--offering options to those of us who need evaluation, but work in the 'real-world'. This is by far the best book on evaluation!

One of the best books available on instrument flying

I am an instrument flight instructor, and I used this book while training for my Instrument-Instructor rating, and I also selected this as the text for my instrument students. It is clearly written and easy to read (not your average textbook "dry" reading....) I have tried other instrument flying books, and this is, by far, the best one I've found.

As an instrument student I started with the book by Kershner. I had lots of trouble and switched to this book and found a world of difference. In particular, holding patterns, entrances to holds, etc. The illustrations are simple yet very effective. This book is excellent so far!

A first rate practical instrument reference manual.

This manual has been a part of my recommended reading for instrument pilots for years and required reading for pilots who are training for the instrument rating or for instrument instructor applicants. The material is sufficient to acheive either of these ratings without overloading the applicant with the typical "fluff", which normally leads to confussion rather than clearification.

Mr. Dogan has organized the necessary basic instrument information in a manner that uses the FAA suggested "building block" method of instruction. He makes it easy for the instructor to follow a training outline and allows the student to absorb small bite size bits of information, arrange those bits into understandable usable procedures, and then to correllate them into a meaningful operational pattern of flying that provides for complete and safe operations.

The use of "To the CFI-I" at the end of each chapter is particularily helpful for the Instrument Instructor as he or she progresses through the flight training with a student. At the very least, these sections develop disscussion areas for the training environment.

This book is a great step-by-step guide of how to approach the application essays, registering for APPIC, and debunks some urban legends about "the match." Additionally, there are tips on interview questions/questions you should ask, sample cv's, and suggestions for tracking your practicum hours. This book, however, does not offer much information about the APPIC Clearinghouse (God forbid that any of us have to go through that!!!).

I left graduate school 11 years ago. I haven't touched a book since. Now, I want to change careers and teach.

So, I have to take Praxis to teach in PA. I bought this book to help me prepare.

I found the summary sections on math and english very detailed. I skimmed over most, but for people who are on less familiar ground, I believe this is a great review. There are also several practice tests to take.

I skimmed the reviews for about a week, took one practice exam, and was prepared enough to ace the praxis I.

I do not like the specific tests section, however. They summarize what a test might cover, but don't give enough sample questions.

I recently got an opportunity to meet Tom and received his book as part of a group meeting. Very impressive guy.. As an individual who have been associated with the PS industry for the past 17 years, I can clearly relate to this book. It was reassuring and highlights certain key pitfalls you might fall into. A very good read for anyone who is getting into the industry, or even for someone who runs a PS organization, but is battling with issues. A lot of pointers are provided in the book to assist in creating organizational excellence. Even for a seasoned PS industry veteran, chapter 8 (Metrics that Matter) will raise an "Aha" moment, for sure.

If you're new to the PS management ranks, the book is a MUST

All I can say is that this book covers absolutely all the bases. If you've been in PS for 17 yrs like me, there is nothing earth shattering about the book, but what astounds is how completely the book explains the planning and organization. It was a terrific refresher. If you're new to the PS management ranks, the book is a MUST and will really help you be more successful, and avoid some common landmines. The book did gloss over the partner questions, and the natural conflicts inherit in the partner channel. But that's what channel managers are for. :)

I felt that Thomas Lah really nailed this subject. As someone responsible for a Professional Services organization, Thomas provides some clear concepts and practical information for helping to build a PS strategy. The use of frameworks to help mentally model a solution was great for someone that grew up in a structured programming mindset. I think every manager of Professional Services should read this book.

Review Date: 2005-08-12
This course is contains all of the basics necessary to start as a loan processor in the Mortgage industry. The format was easy to understand and flows in a fantastic manner from start to finish. I have been in real estate and lending for over 15 years and find this courswork to be one of the better programs out there. We use the materials for all new hire training and to re-train experienced processors in our office that have learned lending using the sink or swim method. So far every trainee has benefited from the material offered. The author does a nice job building a loan processor from the ground up. Early in the course the material provides basics and slowly builds to more intricate concepts. I think the author did an excellent job of providing training applicable all over the country without dwelling on one state specific or lender specific program. I feel that the value is definitely there! Even 1 less draw payment to a new hire pays for all the office training we need! Makes the boss and I both happy. The last real bonus I find with this material is the pull out process. The special burstable binding makes using the exercises and sample forms easy during training - although each processor trained with the material so far has kept their course as an excellent reference. I would recommend this as a great starter course before OR after entering the Mortgage Industry.

Good program. Provided what I needed to get started. Thanks!

I'm now in the field and found that I needed the advanced training course too but am happy that I completed this program first. I liked the study format. Each chapter had a self test allowing me to verify that I was retaining the needed info. Fantastic!!! Thank You!

Protocols for teachers' meetings...
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-13
This book was not quite what I expected. Silly me, I had expected something about how protocols would lead directly to school or academic improvement. Instead, this is a book about how to run reflective teachers' meetings in schools. The book presents about four dozen "starting points" for teacher in-service trainers, and ways to "run" the conversation(s). It really was not bad, but I had a hard time seeing why the authors used the word "power" in the title.

I suppose this sort of thinking has some place in American education. I had a hard time seeing exactly how this would lead to "better practice," however, or why a teacher in-service educator would pick a particular protocol over another, because most of the protocols seemed roughly similar.

Very powerful practices

Review Date: 2004-05-20
Using the protocols in this volume do lead to better practice.

Several years ago, I attended a series of training sessions conducted by the authors on using protocols in professional development situations and experienced the "power of protocols" first-hand. Since then, I have used them or variations in several ways that have lead to powerful insights for all involved. Most recently, in a graduate education course in technology use, my students (prospective or practicing teachers earning a Master's degree) used a modified version of the Tuning Protocol to give and receive feedback on their final projects. All the students commented on the contrast to typical final presentation sessions, and how this experience made them better listeners as presenters and audience members. We also used the Provocative Prompts protocol as a final class activity.

I've used these protocols in working with teachers and administrators in schools. These protocols give people structured opportunties to talk, and to listen -- especially useful in situations of inherently unequal power, such as in meetings with a principal or district-level administator and teachers.

This is an excellent addition to your library if you are a facilitator of any kind (principal, teacher educator, lead teacher, etc.) and is a good companion book to David Allen, Tina Blythe, and Barbara Schieffelin Powell's book "Looking Together At Student Work."

Brain-compatible and Adaptable
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-18
Adult learning theory is handily referenced in this neat little book, and it's those references that are just as valuable as the advice Tate offers for the newer professional staff developer (or anyone who teaches adults). The interested reader can follow the research to explore the subjects more thoroughly.

The theoretical framework pages are useful support for Tate's activities. Though some of the material and suggestions are a bit simplistic for the adult audience("...participants work together to create a song that shows what they have learned."), the majority of ideas can be easily altered to suit any level of inquiry required. It's a quick read, which is also helpful to time-strapped professional developers, and it explores the newest brain-compatible strategies as it inspires creative adaptation. I would recommend this resource as part of a working library, especially for newer staff developers.

Just like her other books, Dr. Marcia Tate takes her brain-compatible strategies and applies them to the adult learner. Often times adults are no more than big children and her techniques help to utilize instructional strategies to 'teach' the adult learner. Her ideas are great for professionals who provide professional development for the adult learner.

The reason I bought this book, and all her others, is because I was lucky enough to be in her 2-day seminar. She DOES practice what she preaches! In her book, she uses 20 research-based, brain-compatible strategies to motivate and engage learners, enabling them to reach higher test scores. During her seminar, she used these same 20 strategies with us and they worked! We actively listened and learned, because she didn't expect us to "sit and get". We were moving, talking, playing games, writing, drawing, etc...using those 20 brain-friendly strategies. I am now using these 20 strategies in my classroom. My math class all tested 100% on their first unit tests! I will use Marcia Tates books and strategies forever!

I bought this "book" (Actually came in loose leaf form in a 3 ring binder) to study before entering commercial diver training. Seems to be the actual text used by my school. Found it very, very helpful, except, reader, be VERY, VERY CAREFUL you MAKE SURE all chapters are there before chucking the packaging and invoice (as I did), as chapters 13-15 were missing from my book. Don't know if this is an ongoing problem with all the books, or if the book gnomes were just playing an evil joke on me that day. Oh well. Otherwise, was very happy and satisfied with content. As appropriate for classroom use ( for which it obviously was originally designed), as for self-study. Has useful end of ch. exercises (with answers). Covers the commercial diving gamut from diving physics to medicine to commercial specializations, such as welding, non-destructive testing, and salvage. Includes helpful anecdotal info on what work offshore (living conditions) is really like. Overall a great book!
