Currently living with a medical student, I can truly attest that most of Dr. Drayer's book is 100% correct. If you think medical school is just like the brochure this is your reality check. This is the kind of medical book all patients should read to see that doctors are screwy humans just like them, not gods. Anyone who thought that this book was sub-par missed the entire point! I hope Dr. Drayer provides us with another look into his world soon.

A MUST-READ!

Just as you don't have to be a doctor to love "ER," you'll love Drayer's essays even if you've never been to medical school! Hilarious and insightful, these no-holds-barred accounts of life in the medical trenches give readers a realistic insiders view of medicine that none of the other sappy, ultra-PC, "I was so moved when I saw a baby being born" books do.

Like Woody Allen in scrubs, Drayer takes us on the kind of journey you love to watch, but are thankful that it's HIS experience, and not yours. (Although, med students will definitely recognize these experiences!) A book to check out!

This author's bitter portrayal of everything medical save surgery is a bit irritating. As a current 4th year medical student this book reminded me of most people at the end of their clinical rotations: irritated by everything. His rantings are repetitive, tiring, and uncreative.

Excellent reference work, recognised in NZ as the standard. Found in every ED in this country. Very worthwhile purchasing my own copy, to have to refer to when I want. Contains some very useful material, although have found some thinking I consider to be out of date. I understand 7th ed may be in the works.

As an ER PA this is the gold standard to start with. Rosens is much more detailed but is too much to start with. I've found most everything I need is in this text.

This book is an excellent learning tool!

This book is a great textbook of emergency medicine, and I've chosen it over others simply because it's comprehensive without the useless drivel. Each section includes the necessary anatomy and pathophysiological considerations for the respective disoders. The subset of conditions are mentioned with just enough facts to understand the morbidity to treat it. The pictures, diagrams, algorithmic flow-charts, and drug regimens are a nice compliment, however, most of your clinical experience is going to come from interships and residency, so to assume this book is all you'll need to get by in EM is crazy. I still think it's the best out there to read before putting your mind to work.

Downward Spiral on Autopilot

Review Date: 2001-11-17
*Emergency Medicine, A Comprehensive Study Guide* has long been a well-regarded standard emergency text, useful in day-to-day practice as well as for board preparation. This new edition has advanced the enlightened 'evidence-based recommendations' for changes in practice patterns, however, the lack of editorial control has resulted in a book packed with conflicting information. Each chapter is written by a different consultant, and unfortunately not all of them are up on this concept... we therefore get a series of conflicting statements when there is overlap in topics, and there is no attempt to reconcile this variability. Admittedly, opinions in much of medicine do vary; but outright conflict within a few pages in a standard text without discussion does harm to credibility.

Further loss of editorial control is also evident on a close read. It is apparent that a spell-checker was used for proof-reading (substitutions of the nature of "week" for "weak" abound) and in some areas clinical formulae have been mis-stated -- example: calculation of effective osmolarity, pg. 1341 (though correct elsewhere in the book). The index seems somewhat disorganized, with references to isolated appearance of a word (example: see *first* reference listing to "hyperglycemia"... certainly not the definitive source in the text). This problem is not isolated.

The book has expanded by approximately 500 pages over the 4th edition, totalling more than 2000 pages. Its size makes it unwieldly to read or carry; it should have been separated into 2 volumes. Even with that expansion, much useful information is missing. Though descriptions of EKG abnormalities in advanced electrolyte disturbance are adequately described, it certainly would have been an informational asset to actually include a picture of such characteristic tracings. Dermatology is similarly poorly pictured -- there are only 8 pages of color illustrations in the text, with nearly 2 pages wasted on 1)technique of foreign body removal (not needed in color) 2)a color demonstration of SPECT data -- well outside the range of information needed for the E.M. specialist, and not definitive, besides. Even worse, the illustrations interspersed in the dermatology section are simply black and white copies of the color text -- providing only suboptimal repetition.

Bottom line: the *Comprehensive Study Guide* has been, and remains, a valuable text for an overview of the practice of emergency medicine; but either keep your 4th edition, or wait for the 6th.

This was oe of my study references for the MCAT. I recommend this one because it has a lot of useful info that one needs to know for the biology portion of MCAT.

Another useful reference is "The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology:Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Topics:Origin of Living Things & Chemistry of Life, Structure and Function of the Cell & Energy Pathways, Reproduction and Heredity, Genetics) Volume 1 by Patrick Leonardi
This last study guide had wonderful questions/explanations that were quite comprehensive for the biology part of the MCAT.

Wonderful preparation

Review Date: 2005-09-08
The Biological Sciences segment of the MCAT contains the material that is least likely to have been comprehensively covered by the coursework of a typical undergraduate. While the chemistry and physics (and organic chemistry) elements of the test are all fairly similar to university syllabi, the broad sweep of MCAT's biology topics (biochemistry to anatomy, and selections from everything in between) makes it unlikely that any one or two courses could cover them all.

Enter Examkrackers. At precisely the correct level of detail, Orsay takes the reader through each part of the MCAT Biology curriculum, emphasizing the important elements, breezing through the minutiae, organizing everything so that it is easy to process and remember. I used virtually nothing apart from this book to study for MCAT's biology sections, and can say that never on the exam did I feel unprepared for a question, which, given the test, is all you can ask. The book might be less than ideal for someone wishing to learn these topics from scratch, but for a concise, helpful review, there is nowhere better to turn.

Good prep material will not discuss what is not on the exam

I saw this text as a readable, colorful supplement to cover bio material. My thinking is that this book does NOT go as deep as some of the other (Kaplin, Berkley, Princeton, etc) material out there - which is not a bad thing. In my eyes, some of the MCAT books out there are doing nothing more than rewriting the bio textbook I used in college - which I have anyhow. This text touches upon only the most applicable subjects for the test.

I now use the audio osmosis cd's to listen to the lectures while reading the charts and brief text in this book to study bio. While I think the book is pretty and a fast read I think the audio osmosis CDs are important to use with the book - but this is just my learning style. The audio cds really underline what IS and what IS NOT important to memorize vs. understand vs. recognize - while the text book is a little confusing in this regard.

Having no experience with neuroscience, I began this book as a preparation for training in Neurofeedback. I took the title at it's word, "Getting Started". While I learned a lot reading the book, it assumes a certain level of knowledge of brain science and is quite badly organized for a beginner. I found myself slogging through very difficult, unexplained material which was then somewhat clarified in later chapters. I found myself wondering why the author didn't organize the material with the introductory material at the beginning and work up to the more complex theories and technical details. The author is obviously very versed in the subject, but the material is not user friendly. It's probably worth reading with the caveat that you'll have to go back and forth to figure out what he's talking about. In retrospect, I wish I'd read "Symphony in the Brain" first which is a history of neurofeedback.

I've taken many EEG workshops in the last few years, but this book tops many of them. There is a lot more here than just Getting Started in Neurofeedback. It is a must read for those starting out as well as for those who want to review and brush up on the basic concepts. I found Demo's approach not only comprehensive, but he also illustrates his major points with specific case examples. The only thing I missed was a table of normative baselines of peak to peak amplitudes. But apart from that, this book is a wonderful gift to the beginning neurotherapist.

This is the only book that I have seen that doesn't just give a theoretical overview of the field of neurofeedback but actually gives a workable, usable protocol which the reader can follow to get started with their equipment. I have found out the hard way that although one's intentions to work w/NF can be good the task of actually using it can be daunting. Unless you enjoy writing computer code and designing programs you will have a tough time getting started in this field. This manual gives you a streamlined method for step-by-step process of beginning to measure neurofeedback. I have used it successfully to measure basic neuro-quotients, where previously I was lost.

Limited usefulness

Review Date: 2007-02-12
I had bought this book with high hopes based on the reviews and description. Make no mistake, this is a user's manual for several types of specific equipment (EEG-type) with very little background on how to interpret the readings or, more generally, on the various aspects of the neurofeedback field, or other methods of neurofeedback. This is a book by a pratitioner for a starting practitioner (dealing with how to set-up electrodes, how to read charts, a summary of a couple dated EEG systems, and how to choose an office space).

It does NOT cover in any detail theory or discuss latest research. Even as a reference for equipment/setup a quick internet search revealed several much more advanced systems available that were not even mentioned by the book. The book references DOS-based systems and alludes to Windows based systems.

If you are starting a business in this area and already have a firm grasp on the fundamnetals of this field then perhaps this book MIGHT be helpful, but anyone looking for an in-depth treatement of the wide range of neurofeedback techniques and/or comprehensive treatment of brain physiology/activity under different conditions should steer clear of this book - you will be disappointed. I am just glad Amamzon refunded my money.

Before you read this book, I think you must have fundamental knowledge on TCP/IP, since this book does not provide basic information on TCP/IP in-depth. However, it still does a good job for helping you prepare the exam. It is a complete book, that contains many materials, enough illustration, fast track etc. But the part of the fast track(summary of the whole book) is not so good, the content is too superficial and also the review questions are too easy that not match to the live exam.

This two-book set includes:

- Install and configure Microsoft TCP/IP

- Test a TCP/IP configuration using utilities such as PING and IPCONFIG

- Define a custom subnet mask and define a range if valid IP addresses

- Configure a Windows NT 4.0 Server function as an IP router

- Install and configure a DHCP relay agent

- Install and configure a WINS server

- Install and configure a DNS server

- Install an FTP server, configure TCP/IP Networking Printing Support, and Connect to foreign hosts such as UNIX.

- Troubleshot an IP network using TCP/IP utilities.

The only thing I see incorrect on the list is that the NT is the foreign host. There is nothing foreign about UNIX. That is why you are buying this training module.

Excellent, but you must use the Admin training kit also!

Drawing upon their years of experience and expertise, co-authors Dana Gaines Robinson and James C. "Performance Consulting" is a must for HR people and anyone who must look to Performance Consultants on a regular basis.

If you are looking for a practical, how-to approach to being an effective consultant, internal or external, this is a high-value book for you. The authors explain, in considerable, concrete detail, how to get at the real issue(s) and shape your approach to make a targeted and valuable outcome. The book provides clear guidelines and models, plus helpful tips and other resources. It is also a great book for managers who hire and work with consultants. Performance consulting is not new--it is: "a process in which a client and consultant partner to accomplish the strategic outcome of optimizing workplace performance in support of business goals." The book shows how to do this by guiding you in how to:

- effectively partner with a client
- establish the necessary "mental model"
- ask the powerful, focused questions
- get at root causes of the problem
- identify the right solutions
- avoid scope creep
- keep focused for maximum impact
...and much more. A host of pragmatic insights await you in this highly valuable work.
The book is ideal for OD/HRD consulting. Consultants in other areas are also likely to derive value from this work. Very highly recommended.

To meet increasingly demanding organizational goals, human resource departments must shift from traditional training methods (i.e. what employees learn) to performance consulting (i.e. what employees must do to achieve those goals). Authors Dana Gaines Robinson and James C. Robinson, who consult in this field, present this intriguing assertion in a rather abstract and wordy book. Thus, this is a better volume for serious study than for casual perusal.

The book gives you in-depth research and information on the complicated process of transforming your training operation to performance consulting. The book contains numerous graphs, guides and checklists, as well as a helpful resource section listing Human Resources associations and workshops. We [...] recommend this book to those involved in human resources, particularly training specialists, training coordinators, instructional systems designers, consultants, and career and organizational developers, as well as managers and media specialists.

It was required reading for me for intro to culinary careers. Since culinary arts, and specifically pastry, is my passion and mid-life career change, much of the book didn't help. Also, like another, I found the first part really boring (especially after having just finished Making of a Chef by M. Ruhlman). It's good if you think culinary is something you may want to do or if you are looking at the different schools and options other than formal school.

It's a great read to see how many of the popular government programs are in fact pork barrelling and not, in fact, in the best interest of society. I find the info contained in the novel useful and valid and the utilization of common themes (i.e. farm subsidies, national defence, sports teams, etc) help the reader understand.

While it isn't the most fascinating book I've ever read, this lives up to its title. It is an unusual, but very effective, introduction to basic economic concepts for people who would rather die than crack open an economics textbook. The choice of real-world examples and the generally humorous tone make the learning painless. I skimmed the glossary before I started and was intimidated by the quantity and complexity of some of the terms that were used, but by the time I had finished reading the book and took another look at the glossary, I found I was comfortable with the terms and concepts. Highly recommended.

This is a very solid, serviceable, non-technical introduction to some of the more popular principles of macro- and microeconomics, designed for the general reader. There are no graphs, and no math required.

The subject matter is frequently surprising and Coyle's writing style is engaging.

Each chapter tackles a different subject: infrasructure, inflation, defense spending, etc., and throughout each chapter, critical terms such as "liquidity trap," "rational expecatations," "human capital," etc. are boldfaced and defined in the back of the book.

Meaning that, despite is salacious title, the book would serve nicely as ancillary reading for a basic survey class on economics -- something to breathe a little life into those charts and graphs.

I should warn you about two things:

1. The title is misleading, at best. Presumably this was a directive on the part of the publisher, in a bid to sell more copies? The title seems to promise all sorts of lurid delights inside, but such aren't really delivered on. The closest you come is chapter 1, which analyzes the economic motives behind the prostitution industry, and chapter 2, which does likewise for the illegal drug trade. The overwhelming remainder of the book is quite mainstream and non-controversial.

2. The woman writing this is British, so most of her examples (about monopolies, laws, failed companies, etc.) come from United Kingdom examples that North American readers might not be familiar with.

Wonderful Review essential in passing EIT, but I have a bone to pick

I bought this in 1992 for the State of Washington EIT test at the price of $43. How the hell is this now $134 and it's the same damn edition, not to mention the print quality doesn't merit such a hefty pricetag? [read: it was recycled paper with crappy fonts]

I lost my copy and many books in a storage flood. Hindsight is 20/20 and my careless nature due to a freak flood at WSU one winter is going to force me to fork out a lot more money than this damn text deserves.

Only problem is that Lindeburg has a virtual monopoly on this type of examination.

This book is great for civil engineering students, even if you are not going to take the FE exam for a while. It is a simple yet thorough reference that will probably replace a lot of your old textbooks once you are finished with your classes. The only problem is that the answers/solutions to the exercise problems seem to be published in some supplementary text to be purchased separately. At least you will be able to sell back some of your old textbooks to help pay for it.

A manual worth having now and later

I consider this manual a very good source of help not only for the FE/EIT exam, but also for future engineering related tasks. I would definitely recommend this manual to anyone interested in the field of math and science.

This book is extremely useful, as the FE exam is based on rapid recall of fundimentals, not in depth knowledge or detailed problem solving. It is very well rounded and is designed to help you brush up on areas where you are weak. As a Chem E. it was necessary to learn the basics of circuit design, statics, etc. and this is the book to do it. The book is laid out in simialr order to the NCEES reference manual, so no surprises on exam day. Remeber, you only have to PASS, you don't need to ace the exam, so the book's few weaknesses won't hinder you from passing.
