my husband and i are a clergy couple. the first year of our ordination we hired a professional cpa to file our taxes. after coming across this book in the bookstore, we purchased it, studied it, and soon we were answering the accountant's questions about clergy salaries and taxes. j david epstein has made it so simple to understand our tax return. the work sheets are easy to use and the instructions simple to follow. every question we have had, we have easily found the answer in this book. if you can balance your checkbook, you can fill out your tax return with this book!

If you really want to do your taxes yourself, buy this book

I have had my taxes done by a CPA for the last few years and she just retired. I've had a tough time finding someone else who could do minister's taxes so I decided to try it myself by buying two books; this one, and Zondervan's "Minister's Taxes & Financial Guide."

"Clergy Tax" is far superior in my opinion because it really does literally walk you through step-by-step on the all tax forms in a very simple yet thorough way.

Zondervan's book, on the other hand, is why I never did my taxes before -- it gives you theory, and answers some questions in the "Dummies" style, but doesn't ever touch down in the nitty-gritty world of tax forms and what goes where on which form.

The Crooked Path To Victory: Drugs And Cheating In Professional Bicycle Racing by bicycling enthusiast Les Woodland examines the darker side of the sport of bicycle racing, including the use of performance-enhancing drugs, as well as some high- and low-profile deaths connected to such "doping", and the lies and schemes to hide such use from tightening competition controls. The Crooked Path To Victory is a hard-hitting and closely researched study of the grim realities of the drive to win at any cost.

Cyclists have used drugs to improve their performance almost since the invention of the bicycle. At first the pharmacopoeia was primitive: ether, wine, cocaine, strychnine. The riders used anything they thought would ease the misery of the impossibly long distances that characterized racing in the early twentieth century.

Over time, as the drugs grew more effective, the riders adopted the newer, more powerful chemicals. In the 1930s amphetamines were synthesized, followed by steroids, EPO and now human growth hormone. Almost always the riders have stayed one step ahead of the detectors. That's why the Tour conducted over 140 drugs tests during the 1998 Tour (the year of the Festina scandal) and none of them detected any banned drugs.

Going back to nineteenth century original sources, Les Woodland has put together a riveting and distressing chronicle of cheating in bicycle racing. His discussion of the 1998 Festina scandal is simply superb.

As with all of Woodland's books, it is written with style and authority. This man knows the sport as few others.

Stedman Graham is a master of leadership. His work on diversity is rich with insight. His concept of leaders not labels is brilliantly relevant to not only the US culture but eqally critical to optimize the benefits of this new "flat world" global economy. The richness of our differences is one of the keys to our competiveness and innovation both as organizations and individuals. This is a book every one should read if they want to improve thier quality of life and influence. Buy it, read it and live it.

Stedman Graham asks, "What do you do with your twenty-four hours?" I say give this book to everybody you know.

Mr Graham is very well grounded in his thinking and gives a fundamental and practical guideline for not only business people, but for all of us who believe that we can change the world one thought, one person at a time. This should be required reading from high school on into college.

This work is somewhat pricy but well researched. Singh provides an excellent guide to the many and varied possibilities of Emotional Intelligence in a professional setting. He also suggests the framework for applying this thinking in many diverse cultures. Thought provoking and extensively documented, Singh provides an interesting read for both the expert and novice alike.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AT WORK

Review Date: 2001-08-03
On 14th August 1998 at 5.00 P.M. Dr.Daniel Goleman delivered the keynote address on ýHow Does Emotional Intelligence Matter at work?ý, at the opening of the 106th Annual Conventions of the American Psychological Association and the closing of 25th International Congress of Applied Psychology at Marriott Hotel, Sanfransisco, U.S.A. It was an amazing personal experience to walk up to him and getting photographed after the event. But he was in no mood to linger on and wallow in the glory of a Star speaker. He said he must leave because he had to attend the marriage of his daughter at 10.00 A.M. on 15th August 2001 in Washington DC, which is about 3 Hours ahead and it takes 6 hours flying time. A speaker has kept his promise and performed excellently by keeping the psychologists spellbound for fifty minutes. He bows in response to a thunderous applause. A father is in a hurry to be with his daughter in a personal event of joy, celebration and marital commitment. Rarely, people are called to enact such contrasting but deeply involving roles of profound emotional intelligence. Dr. Daniel Goleman, the author the great book of ýEmotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQý (1995)?, was on his way to release his recent book ýWorking with Emotional Intelligenceý (1998). I was overwhelmed by being a witness to a great academic event.

At home, another professional has come a long way in highlighting the core concept of EQ. Dr. Dalip Singh, a serving bureaucrat and trained HRD expert now tells the world how to identify and improve your EQ. The movement of a positive and affirmative psychology had reached India. The application of the deeper insights of psychology to work and the recognition of the role of ýEmotions at Worký had culminated. Probably, the overemphasis on the dark, problematic, negative and pessimistic issues like anxiety-stress, violence, war, drug abuse in the 20th century was in a process of balancing itself towards love, understanding, happiness and optimism in the twenty first century. What Dr. Daniel Goleman had started Dr. Dalip Singh is carrying forward.

What is professional success? Can EQ get you promoted?. How to manage your boss?. What are the levels of EQ required for various jobs?. How to handle stress and frustrations in life?. What are the consequences of low and high EQ?. Can EQ be developed?. Dr Singh answers some these questions. He further states that it is the emotional makeup (EQ) of a person which largely determines his or her professional success. It is interesting to note that so many people with high IQ fail whereas those with less intellectual endowment are extremely successful. It in increasingly recognized that IQ may account for only about 20 percent of a persons success in life. The remaining 80 percent depends largely on a personýs emotional intelligence, i.e., EQ. Cognitive Skills get you the job but the emotional skills help thrive once you are hired.

Dr. John Mayer, a University of New Hampshire Psychologist had coined the term ýEmotional Intelligenceý with Dr. Peter Salovey, a Yale University Psychologist in 1990. But it was the best seller by Goleman that Emotional Intelligence became a popular and practical concept. Dr.Dalip Singh, a trained psychologist and doctorate in Management and a serving administrator authors his book with an understanding that Emotional Intelligence or EQ is directly related to success at work and home and elsewhere. It is a compact, comprehensive and straightforward book with pointed direction and specific orientation. Certainly, it extends itself from the concept, its development, pervasiveness, and measurement to its application to different fields of human activity. The emphasis is on understanding, analysis and practice.

Dr. Singh defines Emotional Intelligence (EQ) as ýknowing what feels good, what feels bad and how to get from bad to goodý. An academic definition refers to emotional awareness and emotional management skills, which enable you to balance emotion and reason so as to maximize your long term happiness. It include qualities such as self awareness, ability to manage moods, motivation, empathy and social skills like cooperation and leadership. Sometimes, it is easier to define emotional intelligence by showing how people with a high IQ and low EQ fail disastrously in their professional and personal lives. Certainly a critical, condescending, inhibited and uncomfortable person in comparison to a poised, outgoing, sympathetic, caring, and comfortable person may reach but hardly survive a social universe. The book has an inherent emphasis on what may contribute to corporate success. It is not a denial or neglect of intelligence but a recognition of emotional factors which is pivotal in healthy, fulfilling and productive life. The entire reader friendly narration of the message in this brief and systematic book is towards increasing recognition of emotional factors and not the denied of intellectual factors. A case is built to develop competence through self-awareness, self-regulation, communication, motivation and interpersonal skills. It dispels the myth that Emotional Intelligence does not mean merely ýbeing niceý, giving free rein to feelings, gender bias and a genetically fixed amount of EQ. It rather emphasizes on early childhood training, education, mood management, monitoring, and professional training within the organizations towards emotional monitoring, discipline and harmony. The globalization implies networking and networking has to be positive, supportive and cooperative. The development of the theme through personality aspects, developing and applying Emotional Intelligence in organizations, managing emotions and coping with anger in organizations are apt feathers. In a way the references to the EQ of U.S. Presidents and Indian Prime Ministers are in the realm of human whereas the development of a psychometric test to measure EQ by Dr. N.K. Chadha of University of Delhi, is very significant and useful contribution for organizational research and training.

The book is technically well produced and reasonably priced. For a scholar, trainer, management expert and a layman ýEmotional Intelligence at worký has all the ingredients which will ýworký. As a professional guide the material provided in this volume is an excellent package of theory, skills, strategies and insights for self-development programme, management and administrative workshops and above all to encourage competence enhancement through harvesting of emotions. Dr.Dalip Singh has raised greater expectations by authoring a stimulating book.

Dr. Bennett's lively writing exposes our dysfunctional health care delivery system. He reveals a dysfunction that preceeds the managed care era. It is a system that financially rewards clinical in-effectiveness and does not seem to care about the extent of patient's suffering. Dr. Bennett's experience as a leader in the Behavioral Healthcare field, his ability to bring to life the system's lack of empathy is refreshing. This is a fast read that compels the reader to turn the page and be re-energized by feeling understood and connected. Applause to Dr. Bennett.

Dr. Bennett is a leader in Behavioral HealthCare. He brings to life a compelling story of why we must connect to the the patient's angst in order to be clinically helpful. Dr. Bennett has created a page turner that inspires us to connect with each other as the foundation to a better health care delivery system.

This book is an excellent resource for both the seasoned HR/Benefits manager or new-comer to the field of employee benefits. It is a comprehensive yet readable reference guide which covers everything from basic employee benefits, to general benefits planning and administration, to retirement planning and programs.

Although the book is structured like a text book (it has chapter objectives listed, along with study questions) it is very easy to read and understand. The authors provide many tables and charts which illustrate the more complex subject areas.

As an HR Manager, I highly recommend this book as a reference tool for all companies that wish to maximize their employee benefit programs. The wealth of information and practical material contained in this book is invaluable to any sized organization.

I've recently re-entered the employee benefits field after a number of years away and felt I needed a reference guide to help me identify new laws and regulations as well as coverage changes. This book is a fabulous resource. It covers benefits A to Z. Each topic I have come across in my day-to-day work is discussed in this book. This book is perfect for people in their first benefits position and well as the veteran benefits professional. When the 7th Edition comes out, I'll definitely buy it.

I found this book to be very helpful with regards to Application Integration using the Microsft platform. The authors do a great job of walking the reader through the in's and out's of making disparate applications work and the potential and inevitable roadblocks that happen when undertaking these type of projects. This is a must read if you work in the Microsoft environment.

While not a cookbook, this is definitely a "how-to" book by a woman who's forgotten more about "how to" than I'll ever know. Betty explains not only how to research, analyze, and document the entire spectrum of possible environmental impacts, but why, and she does it in easily accessible language. The bulk of her experience is in transportation, and it shows in the text, but the principles and procedures apply to any federal project. I made sure my staff had a copy so they wouldn't keep swiping mine. Thanks, Betty, we needed this...it's everything you promised and more!

This book is one of the best I have ever read to help explain the difference between being a volunteer and a professional minister. Does an awesome job overviewing some of the stickiest issues that both lay and ordained ministers confront in everyday life. Offers responsible advice and guidelines without being paranoid. It is a book that I turn to again and again.
