First learn the fundamentals
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-26
As a youngster, I loved baseball and read everything I could about how to play the game. Each book that I read started with the line, "You must first learn the fundamentals." This also applies to mathematics, where there is a small set of axioms, definitions and theorems that form the basis of most of what else can be learned. Many teachers have started applying this approach to their teaching of mathematics and are beginning to offer a class in the fundamentals of mathematics early in the undergraduate curriculum. This book is an introduction to the fundamentals, as well as the theory and philosophy of mathematics.
The coverage begins with a basic explanation of what mathematics is, what kind of people do mathematics and some of the ways in which it is split into categories. Chapter one is a survey of the fundamentals of logic and chapter two covers set theory. Each of the next four chapters contains a brief coverage of the sets of numbers in increasing order of containment. The natural numbers are described in chapter three, the rational numbers in chapter four, the real numbers in chapter five and the complex numbers in chapter six. The explanations are well-done and a large number of exercises that advance your understanding are included.
Written in a style well within the knowledge base of the beginning undergraduate math major, this is a book that can be used in courses in the fundamentals of mathematics. The highly motivated individual could also use it in a plan of self-study.

Excellent FM handbook for 2001 and beyond
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-07
A very comprehensive manual (31 chapters, over 500 pages) for any level of facilty management professional. Each chapter is written by practicing professionals and "expert" consultants. Given that the field of FM covers so many areas, it is useful to have many different perspectives from professionals in the field formed into one big book. Chapters are grouped into phases of FM disciplines, i.e, planning, design, management, technology. There are high level topics such as Strategic Facility Planning, Sustainable Design, Portfolio Management and Business Transformation. Also very detailed, nuts & bolts for topics such as Financial Management for FM's, Energy Management, System Implementation for CMMS (Maintenance systems, Benchmarking, Condition Assessment, and case studies for CAFM technology. Brief chapter summaries are provided to assist reader with content coverage. There are lots of graphics/figures which help readability of this thick book, as well as a CD with websites and templates for RFP's, standards and process related functions.

This text successfully guides dentists through the rapidly evolving internet. It addresses many basic questions regarding on-line dental applications. I have been actively involved in cyberdentistry since 1994; however, I still learned alot from this book.

Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-08
This brief article is written in a straightforward way. It provides information, advice and examples on hiring the right people to do jobs that don't fit the average position description. It also explains how flexible schedules and telecommuting can entice the right candidate for a job for which they are highly qualified but not necessarily interested in due to pay scale, location, or hours.

A Good Book on an Uncommon Subject
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-07
This book was written in the "pre-Ulrich" era of HR practice, and that shows. However, the editors took pains to lead their contributors to a view of HR which was strategic rather than process-focused. This book had more "meat" than the more modern "Healthcare Human Resource Management," though, and makes a better course textbbok as a result.

Some of the chapters are woefully out of date, thought, particularly those citing laws and regulations.

For those who want the real scoop on human services!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-21
Everyone who works in human services has at some time or another heard the remark, "you must be such a wonderful person to do such noble work". Dr. Bernstein confronts this attitude head on in her book, "Human Services . . . That must be so rewarding". She talks about the realities of working as human service professional & offers practical, real-world advice for those considering entering the field. I didn't find her "Tales of Disillusioned Diana" segments particularly helpful, but the comments of current & past professionals offer good insights & the "hands on" exercises recommended in each chapter encourage readers to apply lessons learned to their current situation. I think college professors educating future "human service" professionals will find Dr. Bernstein's offering an excellent dose of reality therapy for their students.
