I received this book as a Christmas gift from a friend and throughly enjoyed reading it. The author, Pierre McGowan, brought back many of my childhood and early adult memories of hunting and fishing. My experiences, though not nearly as extensive as those of McGowan, were in rural north Florida. His is a book I read slowly because I enjoyed it so much and hated for it to end. No doubt, anyone, especially from the South, who enjoys hunting and fishing, will be entertained by this book, and I highly recommend it.

The Real Deal on Black Folklore
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-17
E.C.L. Adams was an interesting fellow. In the 1920s, he won the trust of the Blacks in his area and they told him raw stories filled with their true feelings about racial oppression as well as other aspects of their daily lives. Adams collected these stories into two volumes that are collected here (as well as some additional material)that hold up quite well today. No patronizing of his subjects, stereotyping, nor overexaggerated "Negro dialect" which marred similar collections of this kind of material by White writers. I would recommend this and Zora Neale Hurston's "Mules and Men" and "Every Tounge Got to Confess" for anyone who wants to know the real deal on African-American folklore.

One minor complaint, the editor mentions the existance of some other tales that Adams colected that exist in his papers that do not appear in this collection. Wonder why this stuff wasn't included?

A remarkable achievement. The included audio CD is worth the purchase price alone! As a self-taught potter, I particularly appreciate this book. Of the hundreds of items I've purchased through Amazon, this is the first time I've felt really compelled to offer a review. Anyone even marginally serious about making pottery on the wheel or better understanding its Southern roots in the United States will benefit greatly by reading this book and listening to the candid interviews of humble rural craftspeople who did this work simply because they discovered its value and it became their life. This is a wonderful book, and Mr. Mack has captured some real wisdom here that now will be available for many generations to come.

When I told someone I was writing a book about the Catholic Church in North Carolina the response was: "That won't take long! It should result in a nice little pamphlet." The point was that until recently Catholics were as rare in NC as hen's teeth. Now the churches are bursting at the seams. Tar Heel Catholics is an effort to reconstruct the torturous journey from a handful of scattered members of the church in the early 19th century to the two prosperous dioceses in the state today. (However, North Carolina still has a lower percentage of its population Catholic than nearly any other state.)
My training was in sociology and I think I bring sociological perspectives to the work. Why was the church so slow to take root here? What position did the church take towards slavery, segregation? What were the dimensions of anti-Catholic sentiment? How did a church organization go from nothing to a complex bureaucracy?
My point is that the book should be of interest to folks who are not Catholics. I think it is solidly data-based yet written in an engaging style. Take a look!

As a student of history (Ok - I'll grant you I have only a dilettante status) I must say this is a book that everyone should read. Dusinberre doesn't spare the grisly details and approaches the subject from a variety of angles. You'll get the view of the charnel house and from planters.

All to better illuminate a ghastly system that put so many into the grinder.

Powerful and well written. If you love the Palmetto State and history in general then I highly recommend this one.

I think this book gives a full explanation of racial harmony. I recommend this for project use. I think the comments about racial harmony are very useful; I find it is very informative.

Many people resort to reading Hoffmann in German. Many other Writers used Hoffmann's outlines to make their own novels.

This book is a translation of

"Little Zaches, Surnamed Zinnober"
Pure entertainment, and of a high order.

"Princess Brambilla"
A complex and controversial work.

"Master Flea"
Not published until 1908 eighty-six years after composition.

An exceptionally well written regional history

"Thriving In The Shadows: The Black Experience In Charlotte And Mecklenburg County" by journalist Fannie Flono (and currently an associate editor for 'The Charlotte Observer') is a unique regional history of African-Americans who contributed to the economic development and social life of Charlotte, North Carolina. Enhanced with more than 100 archival photographs contributed by members of Charlotte's African-American community, chronicler Fannie Flono provides background information on how black men and women dealt with the restrictions of Jim Crow legislation and segregation and were able to create 'shadow communities' that provided genuine opportunities and led to some truly astonishing accomplishments. Of special note is the role played by returning black veterans who strove for the same opportunities at home that they enjoyed while serving overseas -- leading to a reinvigorated civil rights movement among blacks of all economic levels and educational backgrounds. Eventually, their success would enable them to dismantle 'shadow communities' as integration replaced segregation. "Thriving In The Shadows" is an exceptionally well written regional history that is very highly recommended for academic and community library Black Studies and American History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

This story is compelling as it tells the story of six activists and how they are connected by the tragic Greensboro Massacre. I learned about the protests and history of activism in North Carolina and the injustices that these brave students and workers faced. I enjoyed reading the book because the voices changed throughout allowing the reader to understand how each character became involved in activism leading up to the Greensboro Massacre.

Possibly My Favorite Historical Romance Novel
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-25
This is book number 5 out of 8 in an amazing series by author, June Lund Shiplett. This saga (starting with book 1) follows one woman and her descendants. This particular book interweaves two stories -- the forbidden romance of cousins Cole and Heather, and the love triangle of Lizette and Bain and (Bains' brother) Stuart. Shiplett makes these characters so real -- they have flaws, bad hair days, gain weight and make mistakes. Not your average blonde haired, blue eyed wimpy heroine who gets saves by the big handsome, over-bulked stupid guy. These women think for themselves and can take care of themselves, thank you very much.

I'm really not a big reader of romances in general, but I love this series of books. I think I pull them out about once a year and reread them all the way through. It's truly amazing how Shiplett manages to weave history, family, action and romance thru this series.

This is a can't miss series and you will only wish that Ms. Shiplett had written more.
