This is an excellent presentation of the doctrine of salvation and of the complimentary doctrines of sin, and the Savior. According to the author, all three should be viewed together as a comprehensive whole in order to arrive at a proper understanding of our salvation, since they are intimately related to each other throughout the scriptures.

Written from a dispensational point of view, Lightner lays everything out in easy to understand terms, and in a format that is easily accessible when used as a reference. He covers all the bases and does include brief commentary on some controversial issues such as Lordship salvation, and eternal security. He is courteous in his writing and although he does mention some particular individuals by name, he is careful not to engage in reckless polemic.

You will find his writing clear, well organized, and refreshing. Written in non-technical terms, and geared to the general reader, "Sin, the Savior, and Salvation" is a solid reference volume and I highly recommend it.

A classic in church growth and dynamics
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.

Rothauge's book has become the standard by which church sizes are categorized. Though this book was written specifically about new member ministry, it contains enough information to be useful in understanding how churches of different sizes operate. The information on new member ministry is very helpful, since it talks about the strengths each church size has to offer in attracting and keeping new members. Short and easy to read, I have found it an invaluable reference as well. It's not something you'll read once and never look at again. If you're interested in church growth and the dynamics behind church size, this is a classic.

Sharpening Your Ministry's Cutting Edge
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-01
As anyone in ministry will tell you (if they are honest), there are times when we lose our cutting edge and become rather dull. This is true for both clergy and laity involved in ministry.

Rick Ezell's book, Ministry on the Cutting Edge, is fantastic. Having been in pastoral ministry for nearly 25 years, I know there are times when I lost the cutting edge. This is one of those rare books that focuses on certain skills needed in ministry. But its focus in not on learning on these skills as much as much as encouraging us to use them to continually sharpen the cutting edge of our ministry.

I recently picked up this book while on vacation. As I read it, I was challenged to review my ministry and make sure my ministry's cutting edge was sharp. "Ministry on the Cutting Edge" is a fairly easy book to read. But don't let that fool you. It will challenge you, as it did me, to make sure the cutting edge of your ministry remains sharp by taking care of your personal life.

Ezell lists nine issues that help a person maintain a sharp cutting edge in ministry: Vision, Investments, Balance, Priorities, Prayer, Worship, Leadership, Integrity, and Passion. Ezell states correctly, "The blessings of God and the effectiveness of ministry hinge upon the private, personal life of the minister."

If you have allowed the cutting edge of your ministry to get dull, I strongly encourage you to read this book. As we sharpen and maintain the cutting edge of our ministry, we will find that what we are doing is affecting those we minister to in a more positive, life-changing way.

If you are interested in your ministry remaining sharp, then this book is a Must Read.

It is a winner!

This is the third time I've taught a SuperWrite class and the results are better each time. This is a quick, easy system for anyone who wants to learn to write notes or take dictation. I highly recommend the Notemaking book for students, Volumes 1 and 2 for secretaries and office professionals, and the Brief Course for Continuing Education and Staff Development classes. Not only do you learn an alphabetic writing system, you also learn from the interesting material, which teaches the system. All of these books are winners.

I picked up a translation of this series while living in Japan. The entire series is fantastic. I could relate very well from my past experiences working as a temp and as an administrative assistant. Things aren't so different in the US from how women are treated in business environments in Japan. There are sharp jokes about the way that women are under valued and how the OL's adapt to deal with it. The girls are also hung over in every third strip. Very VERY funny!

Writing At Work : Professional Writing Skills for People on the Job

Writing at Work works!

In the course of twenty-five chapters, Smith and Bernhardt write in a lively manner about the elementary rules (and "non-rules") of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure up through discussions on jargon, technical language, and then on to the "tones" of writing, parallel structure, and playful and elegant prose. I really enjoyed reading this book because I was able to review those elementary rules (without too much pain) as well as get some validation for stylistic choices I've made in my own writing. So much of how a person writes -- whether it's "good" writing or not -- is rather semi-conscious. "Writing at Work" makes the reader conscious about what they're doing in their writing as well as makes a strong case for putting elegant, persuasive writing back into technical and business communications.

And I only had to re-write the last paragraph a few times....

Makes You Think!

Review Date: 2008-07-09
This book was recommended by a client of mine who's very successful. it's easy reading & really makes you think about past & current "crucial conversations". The tactics are really simple, but the times we need to have them in our minds,We don't know how. This book makes it easy. After reading the book, when crucial times come up, I'm using the steps to make sense of what's happening. I wish I had this when my daughter was a teenager!!

Good Book But Leaves Something Out

This is an excellent book which deserves to be a best seller. Many people are using for business but it helps for personal relationships too. However, the book doesn't address the issue of why it is important to have real, live conversations. Just getting people to talk in person is a huge issue in all arenas in life. If your staff or family are hiding behind text messaging and e-mail then you need to read Talk Ain't Cheap...It's Priceless! Connecting in a Disconnected World

Excellent!

I have always been quite squeamish about talking to others when the stakes are high. Somehow I always seemed to make the situation worse, not better, when it really mattered, but I didn't know how to change. Shortly after reading this book, I had a situation come up where I was going to have to have "A Talk" with a relative. Instead of my usual sense of dread, the first thought that came to mind was actually, "oh Good, a chance to practice having a Crucial Conversation!" I applied the principles from this book, the conversation went smoothly, and it was a very empowering experience. Now I have it on my desk for easy reference, and I definitely recommend this book.

A must read for anyone who ever talks to others

I think I am pretty good with talking to other about difficult issues, but this book has added a lot to my tool box to pull from so next time I am dealing with someone on a sensitive topic I will have more tools to pull from to make sure we end the conversation in a positive manner.

Read this book if you:
- have kids
- have siblings
- have co-workers
- have parents
- have friends
- go shopping

OK don't read this book if you never interact with others.

I am not a big reader, but I read the excerpt for this book online one day (of course during a bad day at work), and couldn't stop laughing. I ordered it that night and read the whole book in less than 2 days. As I said, I am not a big reader (I work in IT ... I read specs and they're usually wrong), but I couldn't put it down. Adams makes light of every folly in corporate America .... incentive plans, HR, consultants, management, scorecards/reviews, peers, the art of slacking off and looking busy ........ if you don't like this book, you do not work in corporate America.

A funny, smart, and revealing look into workplace dynamics

Yeah, we all know Dilbert. Meetings are waste of time, managers are stupid, and co-workers are imbeciles. I half expected this book to be full of these cliches. Not even close. Scott Adams does an excellent job of showing the humor of a job with smart observances and clever ideas. From the absurd yet funny comics, to actual written letters from organizations, and his own personal experiences - Adams gives out humor that is relevant, funny, and pertinent. His topics range from management, to consultants, to engineers, to marketing, and much more. He touches on all facets of the workplace in a manner that couldn't be handled well in a few comic strips.

I'm working and getting my MBA now, and this sort of book tends to ground me. It's a quick and easy read. Nothing special, but very smart and funny.

I am a huge Dilbert Fan having worked in a cubicle most of my professional career and this book had so many situations presented that I myself had experienced. Adams' Dilbert has much of the same frustration as I do at times.

Excellent and hilarious!
