I discovered this book in the library when my son was two. He loved it so much and we read it so often that I went ahead and bought it (he was heart-broken when we had to return it to the library). This book is beautifully and humorously illustrated and very cleverly but simply written. A satisfying book for both child and adult and one I never tire of!!!! Which is, perhaps, the highest praise. I want to order all of Wormell's books, having now discovered his genius.

This book is an absolute gem. My family's favourite recipes include the salsa meatloaf, blueberry oat bran muffins, porcini mushroom bisque and the double chocolate cookies. Anne Lindsay knows what she's talking about when it comes to nutrition and healthy lifestyle, and she fills her cookbooks with practical tidbits of advice and information. This cookbook is definitely one of my favourites.

My copy of this cookbook is so well used, I may need to replace it. But I hate to do that, because each page is marked, with notes from the times I tried the recipe, and those little marks that get on the pages of your most-loved cookbook.

In the last two weeks, I've made the mango salsa, black bean dip with veggie topping, black bean and corn salad, chicken penne salad with Thai dressing, porcini bisque, and chicken breasts with mango chutney sauce. And that is not an unusual two weeks! I own about 20 cookbooks; I use this one at least twice each week.

If you're looking for relatively simple recipes with "wow" power for guests, this is the cookbook for you. That the recipes are healthy, and the Canadian Medical Association recommends it, are merely bonuses.

In this part of Anne's life she is off to college. She has an amazing four years, with a couple of new friends. She also has a lot of decisions to make about the rest of her life. This is definitely my favorite of all the Anne books! It also keeps up with the tradition of beautiful descriptions of the scenery, which isn't in Avonlea this time. I really urge anyone who liked Anne of Green Gables to read this book.

A Book of Revelation as Love Takes Up the Glass of Time

Review Date: 2004-10-29
"Anne of the Island" is the third of Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables novels, and completes what we can see as being a trilogy simply becomes Anne finally realizes what everybody in Avonlea has known from early in the first book, which is that Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe were made for each other. Having spent time as the teacher at the Avonlea Schools in "Anne of Avonlea," the Anne girl leaves Prince Edward Island for four years of college (hence, she is now "Anne of the Island"). The theme of this story is Anne dealing with "How horrible it is that people have to grow up," as she confronts how her whole world is changing.

Ironically, what makes "Anne of the Island" so romantic is the way it challenges romanticism. Even as a young woman Anne creates a romantic fantasy around the world in which she lives, just like she did at Green Gables where there was the old Snow Queen at the window, the Dryad's Bubble, the Haunted Wood, Lover's Lane and all those "dear spots where memories of the old years bided." Now Anne and Priscilla, her school chum from Redmond, are renting rooms in Patty's Place, and making the home of Miss Patty and Miss Maria into their own. Meanwhile, after a thousand romantic drams and enduring both Diana Barry's wedding and the rejection of Gilbert Blythe's proposal (her second actually), Anne finally meets her Prince Charming, Royal Gardner.

He is handsome and rich, in short, everything that Anne ever dreamed that she wanted in a husband. Then comes the fateful moment when Roy proposes and Anne opens her lips to say her faithful yes. But this is but a false dawn in Anne's life and there is a fateful Book of Revelation that Anne has to endure before love takes up the glass of time. There is romanticism and then there is that which is romantic and Montgomery shows the difference. There is a reason that this character and these books are enduring classics of (supposedly) juvenille literature.

As usual this book is also filled with interesting and colorful characters, such as young Paul and the Rock People, John Douglas who finally speaks at last, and Anne's friend Phillippa Gordon, who also has her eyes opened to the what true love really means. For those who are familiar with the delightful Kevin Sullivan "Anne of Avonlea" sequel there is also the whole episode of "Averil's Atonement" as well as the entire end game with Gilbert. That is the most important part because at long last the final line of Montgomery's original "Anne of Green Gables" novel rings true for our Anne girl.

This book deals with many things such as humanity and class but the main thing it deals with is the struuggle for women and how they gain and lose power by their sexuality. Offred has power over the Commander and his wife because she is fertile but her fate lies in their hands so they also have power over her. I really enjoyed this book it was mind boogleing to think that these situations can and do occur in society

This book of essays is one of the most entertaining musings on family life (with several great side trips -- such as a hilarious piece on quitting smoking) that I've ever read. Several of the essays were so funny, that I was crying while laughing. I had to read several of them aloud to my husband because he felt so left out of the jokes.

High marks to this absolutely hysterical collection of tales from the domestic frontier!

Patricia Pearson's outlook on life and daily events are expressed in this series of essays written on such topics as fast food, therapists, haircuts, social dos and don'ts and much much more. Take a look at the lighter, funnier sometimes sad side of life through the eyes and thoughts of Pearson, a columnist and writer for publications across the nation. This satirical look will leave you wanting the next installment from this brilliant author. You will never look at life the same, which may not be a good thing, if you aren't ready for change. A Must Read!!!! ****

Excellent book for those who love the stories of the north spiced with thrilling romance that brings tears to once eyes. I read this book about 25 years ago in college in Europe (in my native language). Since I've immigrated to U.S 20 years ago I tried to find this book without any results (even major bookstors didn't know who James Oliver Curwood was). Thanks to Amazon search train i was able to find it. I received this book 2 weeks ago and read it over Christmas and then my wife. I was glad I forgot most of it from the college days and could enjoy it again. My wife was overwhelmed and finished the book with tears in Her eyes.

History From First Hand Accounts
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-21
This is an excellent book that combines the dramatic first hand experiences of SS Panzer crews with an abundance of photos from the period 1943-1945. The book covers both the Russian and Western Fronts and includes such battles as Charkow, Kursk, Caen , Normandy, Falaise, Ardenne, Berlin. I found the first hand accounts quite intense and descriptive that made it easy to visualise the conditions and apprehension of battle. What comes across is the fighting quality and ability of the panzer crews who are still able to inflict heavy losses on Allied and Russian forces despite numerical inferiority and lack of air superiority. There are many photos throughout, but the book is much more than a photographic portrayal, it is a valuable historic record of German first hand accounts of battle and therefore is a valuable historic record in itself.

GREAT PHOTOS, AND AN AUTHORITATIVE TEXT BY A COMBAT VETERAN
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-27
As a leader and commander of Heavy Panzer TIGER units, the author Willi Fey, (as did many of his comrades), faced tough battles against overwhelming odds day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year uninterupted. Like a bloody trail, the journey of the young Panzer crews leads through the hottest spots of the battlefields of Europe. This book contains some of the best accounts of Waffen-SS armor in action in print. From the stunning recapture of Kharkov in 1943 to the last King Tiger in action in Berlin in 1945, this book has it all. The photos graphically convey the action of the many battle fronts; as they were obtained to a large extent from the personal collections of the surviving veterans. Despite the defamation of the German soldier, that continues unabated some sixty years after events described, their daily examples of courage described in this book continue to shine through the lies and distortions of the victors.

An engaging story of the life of Gerry Bull
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-02
This is a great read, even for those who know nothing about the exploits of Dr Gerry Bull. Dr Bull was a flawed genius - a passionate and driven ballistics visionary responsible for the design of many of the worlds deadliest artillery cannons, and yet he was politically naive, inspirational to his colleagues, and a practical joker. He provoked both deep loyalty in his friends and deep hatred in his enemies. The latter would lead to his assassination. He died during his work on Project Babylon - a cannon several hundred metres long!

This book delivers on many fronts: it is well researched and provides in depth information about the superguns that Dr Bull hoped could send small satelites into space, it also delves into his personal life, and takes the reader into the shady and nervous underworld of illegal arms dealings that Gerald Bull wound up in by circumstance.

William Lowther has written with great passion and produced a book that will captivate you and make you want to tell Dr Bull's story to everyone you meet.

An excellent book!

This is a fascinating look at the life of a true genius whose path took him, inevitably, to Saddam's door. His dream of producing a gun capable of putting a satellite into orbit was twisted into a weapon for the Iraqi regime. Reads like an espionage novel, although it slows down a bit when talking about the businesses and fronts used to get the weapon's parts into Iraq. Otherwise, a really good read!

One of the best Lake Superior books
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-16
This is a must for anyone who loves the Lake Superior region.

Very well researched and written, the books begins with a series of articles on several themes pertinent to the Lake, such as the history of lumbering, mining, and the tales of the Native People.

Then in logical sequential fasion, we are led on a tour around the lake stopping at many interesting parks, monuments, towns, etc.

This is not so much a standard guide book as a historical and natural tour. Many current and archival photos are included.

There are perhaps a half dozen Lake Superior books I would own rather than borrow and this is definitely one of them.

An excellent guide
