This book has become one of the foremost referenced text for healthcare professionals on the causes of low back pain. It helps the reader to understand "Structural Findings" on x-rays/MRIs and to correlate those with "Functional Findings" of restricted flexibility and soft tissue pain.

This book is widely accepted by Doctors of Chiropractic and other physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists.

This is a MUST to have on the Bookshelf of any healthcare professional who routinely deals with the management of lower back pain.

This is one of the books in "Back Pain" that any spine care specialist should read. I personally feel fortunate to have done it. Six years ago, after finishing reading it( the 3rd edition, 1992), I was basically converted from a GYII physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Resident with little interest in taking care patients with low back pain, because of the lack of knowledge and skill, to someone who started considering a career as spine care specialist. Now, I am a fellowship trained spine interventional specialist, board certified by the American Board of Phyiscial Medicine & Rehabilitation as well as by the American Board of Pain Medicine, practicing interventional pain management and spine care at the Physicians' Pain Specialists of Alabama, Mobile, Alabama. I am very thankful for this book because it helped me in moving the most important step towards becoming a spine care specialist. The authors did a superb job integrating things such as history, physical exam, spine mechanics, spine impages (X-ray, MRI, CT) together with clinical correlates. It is such an rewarding experience after reading this book to realize that I have achieved the ability to coorelate the spine image findings in X-ray, MR or CT with its spinal anatomical structures and then infer them to their specific clinical presentations. Most of the Chapters were well written, especially those on" Pathology & Pathogenesis of Low Back Pain", "The Site & Nature of the Lesion", "Lumbar Spine Imaging", "Differential Diagnosis of Low Back Pain", "The Three Phases & Three Joints" were extremely well written and informative. It has more lumbar spine images than any other spine care books that I have come across.

It was with great enthsusiasm and excitement that I bought the 4th Edition(1999), hoping for new thoughts and updates, especially in "Diagnositc & Therapeutic Techniques " as the previous edition was 7 years earlier. However, to my surprise, I found little change in this Chapter. I was also a little disappointed by the inferior paper quality of the 4th Edition in comparison to the 3rd Edition. Even though a few more recent referrences were added to the 4th Edition, the core contents of the two editions are about the same. Therefore, my advice to readers is: One is enough, whether it is 3rd or 4th Edition. You need at least one.

Dr. Nordhoff has put together an outstanding work that I use literally every week in my practice. I rate it as one of the top 2 books on the subject (The other is by Foreman and Croft). While our udnerstanding of the actual mechanisms of whiplash has changed in the past year (1999-2000), the rest of this publication is timely, informative, and balanced.

The illustrations are relative and informative, and the guidelines it presents are clinically effective.

This book gives a very useful account of how those who suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME can improve their lives. Osteopathy, as all of us who have been fortunate enough to experience it know, is not just about backs. Osteopaths can successfully treat a very wide range of other problems and ailments, as this book proves. Raymond Perrin is to be congratulated on his excellent work with his patients.

I recommend this book, it is set at a good level, easy and interesting to read yet also providing scientific detail about Dr. Perrins research findings on what causes ME and how to treat it. After so many years of the medical profession having no explanations or suggestions as to what the cause is for ME it is refreshing for someone to provide some sort of explanation. I believe that most people interested in or suffering from ME would benefit from reading this book.

Pretty good book though I was surprised about the author's comment about the late, great osteopath Larry Jones who actually developed positional release through strain/counterstrain.I remember Larry as being a friendly, helpful chap who was much more flexible regarding his techniques rather than the rigid clinician that the author describes. Regardless, the British Osteopath Chaitow goes into details of the various positional release techniques such as strain/counterstrain, functional release etc. which helps clarifies all the terminology. Chaitow also has a video which is a good acompaniment to the book. Kind of wish I had this for the boards.

It's THE book !

On a very complete way, once more, Chaitow shows on Positional Release Techiniques important ways to restablish functional state of different structure, such as muscle spasm, enhacing circulation and more. A very fine book that will be usefull for many manual trehapists. If you have any doubt, don't wait more, acquire it !

I spent years reading these guys research, and in this book, they have put it all together in one handy volume. The book cites a lot of studies from the academic research and does get technical. In fact, I know some physical therapists that have gotten lost reading it! Therefore, potential buyers should know that the book is mainly for people who are in the medical profession that specialize in spine problems.

As a treatment for spinal problems, spinal stabilization exercise is a solid, evidence-based treatment and quite effective. Also recommemd Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for both laypeople and medical folk alike- strengthening the rotator cuff does for the shoulder what strengthening the multifidus does for the spine.

this book, although a little technical, shows what happens in injured lower backs and then proceeds to describe a proven strategy to heal lower backs. I was amazed at the information presented in this book... I thought I knew everything there is to know about backs, having been an athlete all my life and having been a somatic therapist & Yoga teacher for the past 20 years. Well I learned a lot more and I even applied the material to my own back with great results with very little work... I also feel a lot more confident about teaching my clients how to take care of their backs...

Raquel Martin's book, Today's Health Alternative, is an extremely well-written and informative introduction to the world of natural healing--but it is much more. It seems to me that we have in this courageous work a magnificent testimony to what it means to seek the higher way. Here is a noble soul, torn by twelve years of relentlesss pain and sorrow, refusing to "live with it." It is a testimony to what it means to rise above our prejudices and narrow opinions, and to strive to find a better way. I feel that thegreat beauty of this work lies in its honesty and integrity. While we can feel Mrs. Martin's hurt and anger at a medical profession she felt betrayed by, we can slo appreciate her own acknowleded weaknessees, her own refusal to seek alternatives to traditional medical techniques. While at first glance her testimony against the American medical establishment appears somewhat harsh, even bitter, we come to see that her real story is one of triumph over her own prejudices and preconceptions. In the end she sees the good in the many branches of the medical profession and urges her reader into an open-minded consideration of the many doors that lie open for healing. Thiswondrous book is certainly unusual in the field of medicine, for it is so much more than a mere repository of medical information. It is a "Bildungsroman" on the level of James Joyce's Portrait of thee Artist as a Young Man, for it traces the growth of an individual from darkness to light. In the end, Raquel Martin, like Stephen Dedalus, makes a decision against acquiescence, against the darkness, against a life of pain. She wills to live life to the fullest. She wills to know deeply what she can do, and what can be done. She refuses to sit back and solemnly accept the pain that was destroying her life. She will not see it as "the will of God." Instead, she has valiantly launched a one-woman campaign against ignorance, against despair, and out of these efforts she has given birth to a most useful and readable book. Like the myhthological Dedalus who fashioned wings so that he might fly cloer to the sun, Mrs. Martin takes us upward on the wings of her quest for the truth, and shows us a brighter world--of health, of optimism, of life overlfowing. In the final analysis, Mrs. Martin's book is an aesthetic triumph. From beginning to end one feels her love for the reader, her desire to communicate from the heart her experience and knowledge. Her testimony has the power of a resurrection story--from ignorance to knowledge, from narrow-mindedness to open-mindedness, from sickness to health, from death-like existence to vibrant life. I would urge you to give this book your most careful consideration, for here is a living testimony to the meaning of those immortal words, "The truth shall set you free."

A well-written lay perspective on chiropractic

Review Date: 1999-08-12
I first read this extraordinary book as a chiropractic student at Life University in Atlanta, Georgia. I found it to be one of the best written books for the public about the wonderful healing art of chiropractic. Raquel Martin has gone to great lengths to reseach the information she so eloquently presents in every chapter, basing the book on much more than just her personal experience.

Chiropractic is a highly misunderstood practice. I come across this every day in my practice and also in society. Raquel, like many other chiropractic patients, was able to achieve results that she could not even dream of while under tradional medical (allopathic) care.

I firmly believe that if every person tried chiropractic care before resorting to drugs or surgery, there would be much fewer ill people and people would no longer be so dependent on drugs, even decreasing the necessity of potentially harmful sugeries. Health truly comes from within. This book does a wonderful job of explaining how the body functions and how chiropractic helps to aid the innate recuperative powers within us all.

I encourage you to read this book and find out why millions of people visit their chiropractor on a regular basis. Regardless of what ails you, a little fine-tuning can go a long way....

Wisdom in the body. The Craniosacral approach to Essential Health. Michael Kern

I love this book. It is my all time favorite cranial text book. It is a strait forward introduction to Cranio-sacral work. It reads well, the concepts are in a logical way laid out and discussed. Kern is extremely knowledgeable about the subject. He has a unique gift in translating complex subject matters into easily understandable and digestible language. The illustrations are very clear. You get a sense of the scientific benefits of this form of therapy AND the beauty of it. If there ever was a cranial book that you could read beneficially before bed time, this is it. I recommend this book to all professionals who want to know more about this modality. It will help you decide if you want to study cranial work. It will also give you clear guidance to which of your clients would benefit from this form of therapy. Ursula Popp

I couldn't have put it better than the last reviewer. This is by far, my favorite book that I've read on the subject of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. Kern has an amazing ability to put things into laymans terms, and because of that, this book is an incredible joy to read. Franklyn Sills, while a brilliant mind, doesn't really know how to break it down into terms a common person can understand. Upledger, who is clinically and medically gifted, also tends to overcomplicate the subject of cranialsacral work in his writings. Pick this book up, it's a must as a starting point.

7 Solutions for Building Your Proactive Chiropractic Practice: Proven Success Keys to Anticipate and Solve Problems of Design, Growth and Management by Michael S. Meyer, D.C., Professional Practice Resources, 2004

Whether you are researching the best practice management team to join, best coach to hire or the best accountant to take on board for your chiropractic practice, or if you are just selecting materials to focus and stay positive, 7 Solutions for Building Your Proactive Chiropractic Practice is worth considering.

Doctors of chiropractic and all supportive staff and/or family members constantly reassess service delivery, work goals, health goals, while maintaining a healthy balanced life. We all know that in order to "stay on track", it is important to read inspirational, materials. Being open-minded may allow the reader to extract more their source. However, to be given a text which is both readable and inspirational, is truly a gift. The reader may still work to extract information but the read is more engaging and very much more yielding of rich materials which is succor to daily chiropractic practice.

7 Solutions is really a "handbook" with lines for penciling responses, a smattering of sample "logs" sample certificates, and several sample forms. It's a book that lets you get it all out there on paper so that you can see where it is you are in your daily chiropractic life, guide you from the author's experience and knowledge base and reorient yourself for yourself, your family and your patients. It is the type of format that can be a straight read-through a few pages at a time. However, it's not a "workbook" or a reproduced form of a practice management three-ring binder. There is careful attention to book format, clear concise and well-edited writing.

You may not agree with all of the suggestions. You may have heard many of the variations before, but some of the suggestions will be new gems. There is enough diversity of information within the structured, chiropractically anchored text to keep you working on your own practice for some time.

Some of this is pure practice management. It is the type of material that may make some readers shudder if read out of context. However, the focus on multiple appointment visits, lost appointments being lost income for the doctor, never settle, be happy where you are or move, etc., are all worth considering or at least understanding. This is important, even if only to keep up on how other chiropractic doctors are running their offices. The choice of words, for examples "keep your patients educated, excited, and adjusted" may be "catch phrases" but they are easy to remember.

The author is confident and powerful in his beliefs without being forceful, pedantic or unyielding. " Practicing chiropractic is hard work, requiring a strong sense of purpose, mission, and focus.... nobody can be `on purpose' and focused every minute of every day. But on the whole, the way to be chiropractically strong, and confidant is to design your life and practice around your personal and professional beliefs and values. To do this in an effective way, you must eliminate any conflict between how you run your practice-and live your life-and the deep-seated personal and chiropractic values and beliefs that you hold".

Dr. Meyer offers wisdom and guidance in short subchapters such as Find a Mentor Form a "Master-Mind Alliance", Never Stop Learning-Take Business and Success Seminars, and Learn to Communicate, Learn to Influence. Since you are going to spend a portion of your practice income on management materials, 7 Solutions is a definite text to consider when you are getting the new chiropractic year off to an excellent start!

Dr. Meyer delivers what he proclaims with a focus on "real success" that "comes from a doctor who is dedicated, confident, competent and ethical in his or her practice and personal life".

I would give it 10 out of 10 as a chiropractic management text. It will be of benefit to any doctor of chiropractic.
