The osteopathic manipulative therapy bible!
Helpful Votes: 24 out of 25 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-29
This text is actually required reading for most if not all osteopathic medical students. It is a 'textbook', however, and hence completely (sometimes exhaustively!) comprehensive. But it is easy to read so that anyone with an interest in OMT will get a methodic how-to for myriad techniques, also a thorough history of osteopathic medicine to boot! One of my OMT professors at the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine wrote or co-wrote a few of the chapters so of course, I think those are the best! If you are looking for an educational approach to learning manipulation and the reasons behind it, this is a valuable resouce.

Great for beginning and experienced osteopaths.

This is the long awaited basic textbook for osteopathic medicine. It is surprisingly complete, covering philosophy, history, research, and manipulative techniques. The beginning osteopathic student may find it most useful for its practical discussion on the techniques--high velocity, myofascial release, etc. I believe it is also helpful in standardizing our terminology, which will make it easier when taking board exams or talking with colleagues from other osteopathic schools. It includes contributors well known within the osteopathic community, including Michael and William Kuchera, Melicien Tettambel, Eileen DiGiovanna, and many others. As a family practice resident I frequently turn to this textbook first when I want to know more about how to treat a patient or when preparing lectures for students and housestaff.

This book shows what chiropractic is really about--correcting subluxations. This is a great text for students and practicing doctors alike. For national boards, I referenced this book for the Part 2 chiropractic boards along with National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers isbn:0974328731 and National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations isbn: 0974328723
Gatterman's book show how correcting subluxations is to what chiropractic is really about.

I've met Laurie Hartman at F.I.C.O.,Flanders International College of Osteopathy, were he tought his techniques. He is so brilliant that he remaines the modest man himself. His manipulations as he does it are so easy and we ,the students , are wresteling with it.I've learned to follow the tissues and not the technique as we learned them. Thank you.

Provides hope where other treatment has failed
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-24
After reading this book I am inspired for two reasons. First, this book reads easily and simply while providing common sense answers to everyday problems. It explains in simple terms how non physicians can look at problems they may be having, think things through, and shows you simple ways of treating them in a safe, effective manner. Secondly, I have been a practicing Chiropractor for over twenty years, and these stories keep me inspired to continue practicing my profession. Though these stories are about real healing miracles they are easy and fun to read. Dr. Rude is a phenomenally talented healer yet very humble considering all the lives he has saved. I aspire to still be treating patients when I am 83! Chiropractic care is part of a wellness lifestyle and these stories prove it.

Thank you Dr. Rude for giving hope where it may have been lost. G.Pinto,D.C. Aurora Colorado

This is the book for nonbelievers, like me. Filled with solutions to health problems that traditional medicine can't always cure. If you've never considered chiropractic treatment, Healing Miracles will make you reconsider. I recommend Dr. Rude's succinct and engaging book on alternative healing methods. You'll love the real-life stories, too.

I first dicovered this book while I was going to school to become a Chiropractor. It was "love at first sight"! The content of this book is very explicit and talks about all possibilities that a low back pain can be. I recommend this book over and over to whoever wants to learn more about low back conditions. I am also using this book for a research that I am conducting. This is to show how much I trust it!

Low Back Syndromes - Integrated Clinical Management
Ed. Morris, C
(McGraw-Hill Medical Publishers -2006)

My first thought when I saw the first edition of Dr. Craig Morris' Low Back Syndromes - Integrated Clinical Management was, "Will this book be of any use to me?" As an allopathic doctor (i.e., "regular medical doctor"), I did what most of us do - I checked out the quality of the book's information in my specialty, Occupational Medicine. What I found amazed and excited me - the subject matter was relevant and detailed. The writers were the best people in their fields and, most appealing, almost all of the chapters contained useful tools, i.e., well-referenced copies of standard assessment and outcome measurement tools. The visual analogue scale for pain, the Oswestry back disability scale, and the FABQ psychological outcome measure tools were ready to use, to name a few. Equally important, there was clear instruction describing how and when to use them!

The quality of the contributing authors is astounding. These luminaries included Dr. Rick Delamater, the orthopedic spine surgeon from UCLA famous for his pioneering work on artificial discs, Professor Vert Mooney, the orthopedist who revolutionized non-operative management of herniated discs, and Professor Vladimir Janda, the internationally famous neurologist and rehabilitation medicine physician who pioneered neuromotor control and spinal stabilization strategies.

The book is organized around low back syndrome identification and treatment. All the relevant areas of expertise (allopathic medicine, osteopathic medicine, physical therapy, chiropractic, psychology and surgery) are covered in excellent detail and, most important to me, all are well referenced. The book's coverage of pure medical issues includes chapters on pain medicine, surgical management and recovery, occupational medicine, neurology and psychological issues. Each of these fields are covered by experts who give very practical insights that can be applied in medical practice.

As low back disorders are some of the most difficult cases we treat, having top practitioners in their fields describe and explain how their specialty looks at, diagnoses, and manages low back syndromes is an enormous benefit to an allopathic medical practitioner (i.e., "regular" MD) who needs to manage the complex back problems of real patients. In addition to the medical issues, chapters in the book describe physical therapy, chiropractic and psychology management strategies. These give a detailed and broad picture of the tools and practical techniques professionals in these areas use. Of greatest interest to me was the information (well referenced!) on current standards and clinical end points accepted by these fields. Did you know that physical therapists perform manipulation and mobilization and that chiropractors perform exercise and rehabilitation?

Chapters of particular interest to an Occupational Physicians such as myself include:

Occupational Medicine Chapter (Ch. 34): This chapter, written by Dr. Alan Colledge (Director of the Utah Workers' Compensation system and developer of the SPICE model) describes to the occupational physician what the options are for complex low back pain and how you go about implementing them.

Psychological Screening Chapter (Ch. 19): this chapter answers one question that I always struggle with, i.e., when is it appropriate to send a back patient for psychological evaluation, what happens in this process and what do you do with the outcome.

Evidence-based Treatment of Back Pain Chapter (Ch 31): This chapter is written by Professor Nikolai Bogduk (an internationally renowned physician and a leading authority on pain management). This chapter is a gem and describes a step-by-step, practical, evidence-based guide for the regular practitioner to handle back pain.

Post Surgical Management/Rehabilitation Section: This contains chapters on radiology (which technologies are best for which spinal disorders), neurology (which neurodiagnostic tests to run and when), minimally invasive techniques (what ARE those pain management techniques and when do they apply) and each of these sections is of enormous practical utility.

As noted, Dr. Morris' book covers medicine, surgery, physical therapy, chiropractic, osteopathy and psychology. If you are an expert in one of these areas, but not all (this is the typical situation, of course), this essential book provides an invaluable explanation of current standards of practices among all the key fields impacting low back disorders and injuries. It also gives well referenced insight into answers to questions like, "What are your clinical options from other fields?", "What kind of evaluation and treatment can you expect from all these different specialists?", "What are the end points used by other specialists and on what success do they base their therapies?", and "What are standards of practice in each of these other specialty areas?".

Dr. Morris indicated that his purpose in writing the book was (1) to share the science-based rationales for the different approaches to the spine, (2) to reduce the barriers between professionals in different specialties and (3) to promote better management of patients. He achieved these goals and Low Back Syndromes succeeds both as a serious, practical and careful scientific work, and also as a singular book of ambassadorship among the different spine care disciplines.

If you want to provide the optimal, evidence-based management for your spine patients, utilizing the wisdom and accumulated knowledge of ALL the important disciplines, this book is an essential tool.

This book has become one of the foremost referenced text for healthcare professionals on the causes of low back pain. It helps the reader to understand "Structural Findings" on x-rays/MRIs and to correlate those with "Functional Findings" of restricted flexibility and soft tissue pain.

This book is widely accepted by Doctors of Chiropractic and other physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists.

This is a MUST to have on the Bookshelf of any healthcare professional who routinely deals with the management of lower back pain.

This is one of the books in "Back Pain" that any spine care specialist should read. I personally feel fortunate to have done it. Six years ago, after finishing reading it( the 3rd edition, 1992), I was basically converted from a GYII physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Resident with little interest in taking care patients with low back pain, because of the lack of knowledge and skill, to someone who started considering a career as spine care specialist. Now, I am a fellowship trained spine interventional specialist, board certified by the American Board of Phyiscial Medicine & Rehabilitation as well as by the American Board of Pain Medicine, practicing interventional pain management and spine care at the Physicians' Pain Specialists of Alabama, Mobile, Alabama. I am very thankful for this book because it helped me in moving the most important step towards becoming a spine care specialist. The authors did a superb job integrating things such as history, physical exam, spine mechanics, spine impages (X-ray, MRI, CT) together with clinical correlates. It is such an rewarding experience after reading this book to realize that I have achieved the ability to coorelate the spine image findings in X-ray, MR or CT with its spinal anatomical structures and then infer them to their specific clinical presentations. Most of the Chapters were well written, especially those on" Pathology & Pathogenesis of Low Back Pain", "The Site & Nature of the Lesion", "Lumbar Spine Imaging", "Differential Diagnosis of Low Back Pain", "The Three Phases & Three Joints" were extremely well written and informative. It has more lumbar spine images than any other spine care books that I have come across.

It was with great enthsusiasm and excitement that I bought the 4th Edition(1999), hoping for new thoughts and updates, especially in "Diagnositc & Therapeutic Techniques " as the previous edition was 7 years earlier. However, to my surprise, I found little change in this Chapter. I was also a little disappointed by the inferior paper quality of the 4th Edition in comparison to the 3rd Edition. Even though a few more recent referrences were added to the 4th Edition, the core contents of the two editions are about the same. Therefore, my advice to readers is: One is enough, whether it is 3rd or 4th Edition. You need at least one.

Dr. Nordhoff has put together an outstanding work that I use literally every week in my practice. I rate it as one of the top 2 books on the subject (The other is by Foreman and Croft). While our udnerstanding of the actual mechanisms of whiplash has changed in the past year (1999-2000), the rest of this publication is timely, informative, and balanced.

The illustrations are relative and informative, and the guidelines it presents are clinically effective.

Excellent, practical account for ME sufferers

This book gives a very useful account of how those who suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME can improve their lives. Osteopathy, as all of us who have been fortunate enough to experience it know, is not just about backs. Osteopaths can successfully treat a very wide range of other problems and ailments, as this book proves. Raymond Perrin is to be congratulated on his excellent work with his patients.

Review Date: 2007-10-22
I recommend this book, it is set at a good level, easy and interesting to read yet also providing scientific detail about Dr. Perrins research findings on what causes ME and how to treat it. After so many years of the medical profession having no explanations or suggestions as to what the cause is for ME it is refreshing for someone to provide some sort of explanation. I believe that most people interested in or suffering from ME would benefit from reading this book.
