This book exudes quality

I have recently acquired the Atlas of Musculo-Skeletal Anatomy as a teaching aid and reference book. I have a number of such books, but this one stands out from the crowd. The clarity of information, both visual and textual, is outstanding. There are very few anatomy books that I would consider a good bedtime reading, but this is one of them (actually, the only one!).

Everything about this book exudes quality: what it says; how it says it; what it shows; how it shows it; the paper; and the cover. Truly a work of art and inspiration. Also, I found the extra information on body mechanics a welcome bonus.

I am just finishing up a semester of undergraduate nursing/pre-OT anatomy and found this book to be an excellent resource, especially for the muscles. For most muscle groups Jarmey has an illustration of each individual muscle along with its relationship to neighboring muscles. This was very helpful in preparing for the lab practical (got an A!). I purchased this book and not Jarmey's Concise Guide to Muscles because the Concise Guide did not cover all muscles I was required to know.

I am a practicing physical therapist, and I have found no other resource to be as effective as the Back Book for patients with non-specific LBP. It utilizes current research on fear-avoidance and teaches patients to be copers, not avoiders!

A well researched, very accurate and informative reference/text book which is essential for any chiropractor who sees more than about 1 kid per year. Would enlighten most MD's, paediatricians, nurses and physiotherastics taking care of children on a regular basis.

Very interesting book on chiropractic history!

Review Date: 2004-05-02
This is a wonderful book on how chiropractic came to be and how it evolved into the profession it is today. Chiropractic helps millions of people world-wide without the use of drugs or surgery. I also reviewed parts of this book for the chiropractic Part 2 national boards--Principles of Chiropractic section. It helped me a lot along with Dr. Leonardi's:
National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers. These two books were great for helping me prepare for the boards. Dennis Petterson's book is what a chiropractor should have in their office library. It's always good to know history to prevent us from making the same mistakes of the past.

Fabulous book: a must have for your reception room!

This is not a book I would have bought for myself so I was glad when a colleague gave it to me for my birthday. It is a fabulous book covering just about everything possible in the Chiropractic profession. Reading about the Anti-trust suit and all the other political struggles has truly re-enforced my deep love and respect for this great profession.

There are so many other natural cures that lost the political battle against the med/drug cartel i.e. Rife, Tesla just to name two. I think one of the reasons the profession survived is because we had a lot of Chiropractors who were good politicians along with a passion for healing that is surpassed by no other healing profession that I know. They also were able to humble themselves within the medical community in order to win the many political battles fought in all 50 states plus two (?) U.S. territories.

I am so proud to call myself a Chiropractor and will have undying respect for all those who came before me so that thousands of people are able to access the healing power of the spinal adjustment. A treatment that clearly relieves back pain but also affects the general health so people require fewer of the cut, burn and poison treatments.

You must read this book and then put it in your reception room so your patients can appreciate the magnitude of the privilege they have when they come into your office for their treatments.

P.S. A note to the authors: you left out the great state of Massachusetts in the chart that shows the year each state won their licensing struggle. It was 1966!!! Thank you Dr. Macdonald and all the other pioneers in this state who made this possible. It was truly a miracle.

Chiropractor: The Quest for Professional Respect

Boyer Dispels Rumors and Propaganda
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-21
Boyer's book is interesting. He takes an honest, no nonsense approach to the subject of Chiropractic care and its evolution from the days of Palmer's discovery to a modern, researched health care practice. He also examines the how Chiropractic is practiced today and the need to educate the established medical community in modern Chiropractic research. I applaud Boyer for not slamming the established medical community, but instead, calling for a spirit of cooperation between different health care professionals.

All people in all health care professions would do well to read Chapter 3 "How do Chiropractors View Health?". It should have been titled, "How do Chiropractors View Chiropractic?" This one chapter, written in Question & Answer form, cuts through all the inane rumor, lies, and malicious propaganda written by some in the medical community. This chapter explains how the modern Chiropractor views their profession. Call it a FAQ's about Chiropractic. This chapter alone makes this book a valuable tool for those in the health care field who wish to expand their knowledge of health care professions other than their own.

Boyer also includes mini case studies from his many years of practice that are both eye opening and thought provoking. This one is worth a read.

Having read this book I have gained a huge amount of respect for this specialty which the public deserves to have covered under their respective medical plans, but alas this is not the case.

It was a great book and a good read. Not the typical dry, boring text you'd expect from a medical history text. A must buy.

A must for any clinician treating the Cervical Spine!

Dr. Murphy has produced the state of the art text in the conservative management of the Cervical spine. Covered are the basic sciences, most common clincal syndromes, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and management. Taking a multi-disciplinary approach, this book serves Chiropractic physicians, Physiatrists, physical therapists, Osteopathic physicians, and all clinicians with a need and interest in understading conservative Cervical spine care.

Among therapeutic approaches covered are manipulation, soft-tissue techniques, the Mckenzie protocol, sensorimotor rehabilitation, cervical stabilization, exercises, psychological management, and surgical.

Clinical conditions include Cervical trauma, motor vehicle collisions, headaches, Cervical radicular and pseudoradicular syndromes, joint dysfunction, myofascial syndromes, vertigo, disequilibrium, orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, and neuropsychological dysfunction.

Of all the fine information contained in this work, my favorite portions consist of the quite frequent "Clinical Pearls" interspersed thoughout each chapter. These are Dr. Murphy's own personal commentaries, practical clinical tips, and observations. They add immeasurably to the usefulness of the information in daily practice.

Deepening Into Embodiment

Review Date: 2007-06-19
This beautifully-written book is valuable for readers from a very wide variety of perspectives, disciplines, interests, questions, and concerns, both personal and professional.

For me, the primary value is twofold:

1) the paradigm shifts available from the metaperspective that represents Bonnie's unique synthesis of Continuum, Osteopathy, and her own rich and varied life experience. This metaperspective emphasizing fluidity, de-habitualization, open-focus exploration, and trust in organic unfoldment is the connective tissue that links together the diverse topics explored in the individual chapters.

2) the insights and openings that come to me from reading a single sentence, paragraph, or page and then letting her words resonate and reverberate throughout the course of a day to see what new intuitive and experiential connections emerge.

A Grounded Vision

As a computer systems architect and engineer with a strong knowledge base in the sciences, I tend to find most books that attempt to deal with metaphysical or esoteric topics shallow, inaccurate, and annoying.

What a pleasure, by contrast, to read Dr.Gintis's excellent, knowledgeable, and grounded vision of the continuum of body-mind-spirit!

Also, by contrast to the dry academic tomes with which I am all too familiar, this is a book that allows me to participate in the author's life, vision, and healing process. I find that reading it stimulates me, not only to new thoughts, but also to new ways of experiencing my embodiedness.

Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Practitioner's Guide to Treatment

Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Practitioner's Guide to Treatment

Whether you treat people with Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) or you have been diagnosed with FMS, Leon Chaitow's "Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Practioner's Guide to Treatment" may be exactly what you have been seeking. As a person living with FMS--who has read MUCH about this topic--I can tell you that this book is the best thing going. This practioner's guide is especially good for those familiar with "medicalese." But, even if you're a "beginner" with FMS who simply wants to help educate those on your health care team (physicians, massage therapists, chiropractors, etc.), owning this book will allow you to lend it to your practioners. I have no doubt that, after they have seen your copy, they will want to purchase their own.

In "Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Practioner's Guide to Treatment," Chaitow briefly describes a number of theories about FMS, discusses the validity of these, and explains the treatments that flow from the theories. Some of the treatments can be accomplished by persons with FMS; others require the cooperation of practioners on the health care team. Treatments are described in detail, supplemented with illustrations.

Kudos to Leon Chaitow for this fine work!

Informative and well written
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-02
The information in this book from Leon Chaitow alone is worth the price. In addition to his fine writing, he brings together many authors who are blazing trails in fibromyalgia research. They offer many treatment options and perceptions.

As Dr. Chaitow explains, it is now recognized by many researchers and practitioners that fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS)is often perpetuated by myofascial trigger points (TrPs). Most patients with FMS have TrPs as well, and treating the TrPs can significantly reduce the symptom load. Fibromyalgia and myofascial pain from TrPs are not the same. Many people have TrPs but do not have FMS. Knowing that the central sensitization of FMS is present in patients with both conditions will enable the practitioner to adjust TrP therapies accordingly. Dr. Chaitow is very clear about this.

Fibromyalgia is not yet curable, but it can be treated, and many of the components that add to the patient's burden can be minimized or eliminated with adequate treatment. This book is a toolbox full of ways to accomplish that task.
