Good Guide to Alternative Therapies

Dr. Jeffry Finnigan's book, Life Beyond Headaches, is an interesting and useful guide to finding alternative means to headache relief. If you suffer from chronic headaches, you know that traditional modern medicine offers few treatment options, and usually those available involve potent medications. The author, in this book, prescribes his own treatment regimine for finding relief. These involve such things as diet, exercise, positive mental attitude, sleep, breathing. In addition, as a board certified doctor of chiropractic, the author gives insight into how cervical alignment are related to headaches and their treatment. As one who suffered from chronic headaches, I did not find much relief from chiropractic, but perhaps when in combination with the comprehensive program Dr. Finnigan prescribes, one could find relief. The only flaw in the book is it suffers some problems of organization, this is where an experienced editor could have much improved the text. However, this should not deter one from looking at this book to determine if this program can help you find relief from debilitating headaches. Finally, this book is printed on matte finish paper with large text to make it easier to read for those with headaches that are ultrasensitive.

This book is an advertisement for his clinic. The information is basic, and for chronic headache sufferers will be nothing new (exercise, sleep, breathe, and have a good attitude). The last chapter is dedicated to The Atlas, the top vertebrae in your spine, which he suspects is the culprit for chronic headache sufferers. It also invites you to fly to his clinic for treatment (which is necessary because his theory apparently isn't mainstream at this point either, which means most likely a doctor in your area cannot help).

Unless you are actually interested in getting treatment at his clinic and want to know what exactly he does, I wouldn't bother buying this book if you're looking for information on headaches.

Diet, exercise, sleep, breathing, positive mental attitude are all crucial to controlling headaches. The explanation for this "theory" takes up most of this book and it doesn't take an M.D. or a D.C. to figure that out. Basically, this part of the book is filler. What is said in the rest of the book would fill a pamphlet. But hey, the guy wanted to write a book about his chiropractic specialty, the Atlas vertebrae and the Atlas orthogonal procedure. There may be something to it. But I found the whole book to be simply a lead-in to the business solicitation that takes up most of the last part of the book. It explains how an out-of-town patient can fly in and recieve intensive treatment over the course of a few days, and of course, glowing testimonials. This is an advertisement masquerading as a book. Proceed at your own risk.

Dr. Sportelli has apparently made the decision to provide a very limited view of a chiropractors role. Chiropractic is not about back pain, it is concerned with the removal of interference to the nerve system, thereby allowing the body to function closer to its potential. Chiropractic has never been about "LOW BACK PAIN"---it is this type of misconception which has permeated our society and continues to be spurred on by texts such as this. Dr. Sportelli graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in the 1950's. He most certainly was not taught such nonsense at Palmer, for his pigeon-holed concept is not taught there, nor at any other good chiropractic college. Chiropractic recognizes and deals with the bodies inborn mechanisms. Dr. Sportelli's book was quite a disappointment in this and other respects. My advice, pass this one by and talk to someone at a college such as Palmer, Sherman or Life College and get the facts.

Among other related sciences, I teach human osteology at the college and graduate levels. There is no use for this text in the classroom. It is a sad book stop on a shelf full of other more useful books. If you are looking for a 500 page book of awkwardly strung together minutiae of little relevance to the forensic world, this it the book for you. If you're not, I recommend checking out other sources.

For the first time all the leading practitioners of the United Kingdom, currently working within the fields of archaeology and anthropology, are brought together to produce a comprehensive overview of human osteology, and its applications in the interpretation of human skeletal remains.

Whether your interest in Human Osteology is academic or forensic, this single volume contains a wealth of information and further references.

The historical development of the subject is succinctly expounded, followed by more specialist chapters on: juvenile skeletal development; palaeodemography; the effects of disease on the skeleton; variation in the human skeleton; the efects of trauma and assault on the skeleton; and the microscopic, biochemical and analytical approaches currently undertaken.

All of which can assist both the archaeologist in the reconstruction and interpretation of the past; and the forensic scientist in the identification of unknown human remains, and in assisting the authorities in criminal investigations, including war crimes.

This volume is written from the experience of osteological research, analysis, and practice within the north-west European context, and offers an alternative, whilst complementary, source of information to that of the North American experience. It is long overdue and most welcome.

The Editors have ensured that not only a full discussion of the current state of research is available to the reader, but also the challenges and options for the future development of human osteology.

For the undergraduate and post graduate student this volume will provide an excellent basic text in its own right, and will no doubt quickly become a standard reference within universities and colleges.

Why transfer?

in answer to the question: why would a D.O. want to transfer to a allopathic school: because most D.O.'s take that route because they failed to get into a US allopathic school, just like IMGs. Program directors know this as well as the reviewer. A DO, like an IMG, may be as good as any US allopathic student, but the reality is that for most, its a backdoor and there are more opportunities for allopathic US grads, fair or not. That reviewers comment reflect his personal agenda and not the value of this book.

I am very sorry to have to write this as I hate to slam another Chiropractor's work, but Wise Cracks and Funny Bones is just awful. I bought the book to put out in my waiting room but after reading it over I decided against it. The book is poorly written and unfunny. In fact, there is nothing funny at all in the book. Here is an example of what you will find. The following is an actual example taken from the book itself;

"A patient having difficulty with her co-ordination said, `Doctor, I have all this trouble. I just keep getting all mixed up between my arms and legs. What can I do?' "

That's it, no other back story or information is given, that's the entire entry. The entire book is just like this. Don't waste your money on this one. My apologies to Donald McDowall. I hate to slam your book, but I feel like it wasn't worth the money I paid for it.

Good Ideas within a "Poor Mentality" Base

This book is full of interesting material, on how to develop the practice, the ethics... However I was a little disappointed by the "poor mentality" expressed by the authors; they often relate to the lack of money and how they're always trying to get the cheapest and avoid expenses. I agree that it's important to look carefully over money matters, and that money is much more easily spent than it is owned, but I believe we can be very successful with an abundance mentality. Nevertheless, this is a book I recommend, filtering through the information that make most sense for each reader.

This is probably a good beginning for writing your own personal statement. I don't think that it should be your only book or resource. A lot of the books out there are great if you have won the Olympics, cured cancer, or if you have already established your own blood bank or something. For the more traditional students (like me) who have not saved the world, this book offers an honest start in beginning to evaluate what you may write about. I supplemented this book with the writing center at my school and I got about 12 interviews (can't remember exact number) after sending my secondaries so I think this book combined with the writing center helped.

Concern over Chiropractors
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-14
Spin Doctors serves as a nice introduction to the criticisms of the chiropractic profession. The beginning history of chiropractors from the late 1800s is laid out very completely. Within the first two chapters an unscientific profession searching for an indentity is planted with the reader. The origins of chiropractic care can be traced to Canada and throughout the book cases and experiences in the provinces are frequently cited.
Following the historical background major criticism areas with the industry are discussed in a very readible manner: the subluxation theory, stroke occurence and neck manipulation, the gimmicky nature of the profession, and chiropractic care on children.
There is some very slow reading on canadian legislative and political issues related to chiropractics as the book progresses. The reader may not find these portions of the book engaging in presentation or relevant regardless of the their country of origin. The book remains valuable despite these monotonous passages and the reward for completing this publication will be an informed opinion of chiropractors that can be translated into intelligent dialogue with any individual in or out of the health care arena.

This is the type of medical attack, that has tried to denigrate Chiropractic for over 100 years. If you hold the medical profession to the same candle, you will ignite a flame for thousands of years. I am more than a little tired of quasi- scientists trying to make a buck off of a professional.

Wow, this was an excellent read that really uncovered the mystery (and mysticism) around this business. I am amazed that more folks have not caught on to the lack of clear evidence on the benefit of this treatment practice, not to mention the potential harm! I laughed out loud at one of the reviews given that hated the book as I suspect this person is in the "business" and practicing the time honored defense of their "treatments"! Thanks to the authors for writing this much needed book!

I couldn't help but peruse this thing. It's chapter after chapter of out-of date claims by those who simply can't accept the fact that chiropractic is here to stay and that a growing body of research supports more and more of what they do.

Usual junk. Don't buy this book unless you're part of a campaign to spread ignorance and lies about something that the author clearly has a political agenda about.

Finally, an easy to read expose of this nonsensicle "science". If it wasn't that people continue to fall for this nonsense, it would almost be funny. Chiropractis is almost as stupid as scientology, and likely to drain the bank account just as fast. How in this day and age, people could believe the science fiction of this so called medical therapy is beyone belief. Remember, the guy that dreamed up this nonsnse was an uneducated buffoon.
