I have written a review of this book before, but 3+ yrs. down the road it's still a life saver for me. I had frozen shoulder from painting inside my house (several rooms) and recently used the book to resolve the problem. I find myself referring back to it for myself and for others with pain, suggesting they see a dr. or massage therapist or try the tennis ball against the wall (helps when it's in a sock so you don't drop it). I LOVE THIS BOOK. Can't say enough. It's saved my sanity during years of arthritic problems (beginning at only 30) and ongoing pain. Read it, use it, keep it at-hand...you'll be glad you did.

A great book! Along with the theracane(which you don't really need to use it) my back and neck have finally had some relief.
If you are not sure you want to buy it, then check it from your near by library or interlibrary loan, and I guarantee you will end up purchasing it like I did. It is worth every penny and frequently refer to it again and again.

Tennis elbow fixed!!!

Review Date: 2008-04-08
My experience is very much like the authors... I struggled with very painful tennis elbow for several months, and doc said the only options were anti-inflammatories, cortisone shots, or surgery. I didn't like any of those options, and out of desperation visited a massage therapist at my health club. Fortunately the therapist had studied trigger points and shared enough knowledge with me to make me dangerous. After that visit and one more day of me poking around on my arm, the elbow pain was gone, like someone loosened the vise. I found several of them above, below, and in the elbow. The newly unlocked muscles were pretty weak, but after just two weeks of trigger point therapy, light weights and stretching, they are fully recovered. I bought the book and a thera-cane to assist with my crusade against trigger points. Can't wait to give doc the bad news.

Managing a chiropractic clinic requires solid business skills. This book helps you develop such skills quickly and effortlessly. Why waste time and money on experimenting yourself when you can instantly leverage 20 years business management and another 20 years of active chiropractic practice?

The book covers clearly and succinctly an ambitious range of topics, including cash flow management, marketing, essential clinic function, personnel management, etc. Dr. Delman did a remarkable job of exploring each topic with sufficient detail and meaningful examples.

It is an indispensable reference tool that belongs to every chiropractor's library.

This book is powerful... On the contrary of many other books or seminars, it doesn't take 1 good idea and make a huge business around it, every chapter is concise, to the point, with a great generousity in the topics covered and the advice given.
Also, I recommend the website www.businessofchiropractic.com for its great additional content, also available at a reasonable price.
So whether you've been a practice for a while or you're just starting out, please take practice & management seminars, hire a coaching company and read other books, we never have too much info, but this book is a must have... more than that it's a must READ!

This is the book, more than any other, that helped me set up my practice. It contains practical information about how to get new customers after opening the doors, not to mention how to advertise without being crass. If I'd bought it earlier, I would have been even more successful. Even though it says "after startup," I think reading it before startup is good.

I experienced Dr. Delman's knowledge and skill in chiropractic and practice management as a patient many years before following in his footsteps. When I saw that he had written a guide book for the rest of us, I was thrilled. I own both the first and second editions. Dr. Delman explains the "how-to's" of a successful practice in a concise, understandable and enjoyable format. This is a must for any DC at any stage!

I often shake my head in disbelief to think that many of my fellow chiropractors will shell out thousands of dollars in practice management seminars when a book such as this exists for a fraction of the cost, and in truth, is much better.

Ivan Delman has managed to take important universal truths of business success and apply it to chiropractic in a simple but powerful way. Passion, wisdom, humor, and compassion are the hallmarks of his writing style that walks you through essential steps in creating the practice of your dreams.

Just as in chiropractic we tell our patients to please try chiropractic first before doing expensive, needless surgery, I suggest that D.C.'s read this gem of a book first before attending an expensive seminar.

You won't be sorry.

The Best Modern Profitability and Billing Resource for the Physical Therapy Practice
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-06
The profitable Physical Therapy and rehabilitation practice requires sharp focus and excellent administrative skills in addition to assurance of best practices. Payers underpay Physical Therapy and rehabilitation offices more often than any other specialty. An average PT claim earns $55, which has dropped 17% over the past five years. Payers also audit Physical Therapy and rehabilitation offices more often than any other specialty because of inconsistent medical documentation and frequent problems with billing compliance. Instead of treating patients, practice owners spend excessive and wasted time fighting payers and payers' systems.

"Practicing Profitability" teaches how to implement scalable billing processes using modern Internet technology to match the power, efficiency, and scale of payers' systems. The examples in this book have a background in chiropractic office management and are directly applicable, equally relevant and extremely important in the advancement of Physical Therapy and rehabilitation billing practices.

Regardless if you are just starting your Physical Therapy practice or if you are a veteran rehab office owner, "Practicing Profitability" offers a wealth of knowledge in a tightly organized and easily digestible way. It is the best modern profitability resource for the owner of a Physical Therapy practice.

Levels the playing field

A comprehensive analysis of the losing battle physicians find themselves in with unpaid and underpaid claims due to the insurance companies' powerful computers and software. Insurers will pick out small inconsistencies and reject claims, delaying for weeks or months the payment the physician has earned. The approach outlined in this easy to read book explains how the doctor can level the playing field by equipping his or her practice with equally powerful software to match the insurers'. Dr. Lirov, a renowned computer expert, outlines the various strategies of his system to overcome the payers' continuous attempts to underpay or delay payment to the practitioner. Using such a system makes sure that claims are 'clean' even before they are submitted. Moreover, it does not allow the insurer much time to delay thereby shortening the time for accounts receivable. This results in enhanced profitability for the practice, hence the name of the book, "Practicing Profitability." It should be required reading for anyone in private practice.

A Must Read for Every Owner of a Rehab or Physical Therapy Practice

The physical therapist has a strong background and foundation of clinical orthopedics, physics, biomechanics, anatomy, neurophysiology, physiology, medical diagnostics for physical therapists, histology, and all other related subjects. That's the knowledge we acquire when preparing for our profession.

But no physical therapy or rehab education program prepares us for the harsh realities of daily struggle with insurance companies to get paid in full and on time. A recent physical therapy program graduate lacks basic knowledge about payer-provider adversity, HIPAA compliance, audit mechanics, SOAP note management, reporting tools, billing profitability metrics, and outsourcing opportunities. And no program teaches us how to use modern computer technology and Internet to accumulate and leverage our collective health care and practice management knowledge.

This concise, highly informative, and expertly written book addresses a major educational gap. Practicing Profitability is a must read for every owner of a rehab or physical therapy practice.

Health care spending continues to rise at the fastest rate in our history. On one hand, the insurance companies, bio-tech and pharmaceutical companies, as well as lawyers, have increased their profits in step with the rising costs of health care. On the other hand, the medical and chiropractic office owners - the actual health care providers - have not only failed to keep up with raising costs but have lost a significant part of their income.

How such a paradoxical situation is possible without a deliberate strategy against health care providers?

The best part of Lirov's book, for me, was understanding this paradox and becoming more conscious of how insurance companies manage to systematically reduce my income to improve their shareholders value. Lirov's book spells out the reasons for and the symptoms of the payer-provider adversity. The book outlines both the strategy and the tactics the insurance companies use to underpay or worse, take back the money already paid to the providers. This is not a theoretical work trying to lay out a strategy of underpayment. This is a road map for any insurance company interested in a simple and pragmatic system to increase its share value.

Next, Lirov's book outlines an Internet-based strategy for providers interested in leveling the playing field with the insurance companies. This is a toolkit, designed to give the reader a selection of tools for specific circumstances. The underlying theory is that multiple small practices can use the Internet to combine their insurance claim volumes to "transform the many into the mighty" and use Metcalf's law to guide them during such a transformation. Lirov's book tells you how to create a shared and continuously improving billing knowledge base and an integrated system for both front office and an outsourced, or even off-shored, billing service.

In spite of the title that mentions chiropractic, most of the information in this book is directly applicable to any health care provider running a private practice and dependent on insurance payments. The book is filled with valuable advice and simple examples about using modern technology to increase provider's revenue. The introduction of the billing network effect concept is simple and convincing. The audit part could use more examples but the parts on metrics and on outsourcing are both practical and easy to follow.

Overall, this outstanding book provokes thinking about best practices, scalability, and professional management of the physician's office. It should be required reading for practitioners at any level of business experience.

Major milestone in billing evolution

Review Date: 2007-11-02
The average practice submits half of its codes wrong. A poorly designed billing process fails to spot a line-item underpayment. Denial followup is frustrating and expensive. Taking advantage of practice management incompetence, the payers leave the clinic owner with disappointing revenue flow.

Lirov's Practicing Profitability teaches how to design industrial-grade claim processing systems and how to use Internet technology to manage them. This book maintains a bird's eye view of the entire practice revenue cycle, starting with patient appointment scheduling, pre-authorization, patient encounter note creation, charge generation, claim scrubbing, claim submission to payer, and followup, which in turn includes denial or underpayment identification, payment reconciliation, and appeal management. It also includes separate chapters on outsourcing, reporting, compliance and audit.

Written by an expert in billing and technology, Practicing Profitability is a major milestone in the evolution of medical billing from individualistic art towards disciplined and systematic process.

If you are unable to seek the professional medical care that Dr.Todd Sinett and associates at Midtown Chiropractic Health and Wellness provide there is still reason to celebrate - this book.

Full disclosure - I have been a patient of Dr. T. Sinett for over four years and have benefited tremendously from his three prong approach to uncovering the source of back pain.

Prior to being treated by Dr. Sinett's methods, I suffered daily for over 5 years with chronic, yet not diagnosable, back pain. In addition to seeing medical doctors, physical therapists, and massage therapist - I read EVERY book on back pain on the market. None are as clear and concise as Dr. Sinett's slim volume, The Truth About Back Pain. My gratitude for this book is over whelming because I know it will help others wake-up to the true causes of their chronic pain.

If you are beating yourself up for having mysterious back pain (or shoulder pain or stomach pain etc.) that keeps you from living the life you know you should be living - this book will begin to reveal to you that the pain is not just in your head. It is real; however, it might not be bending over to pick up the car keys that started it. It might be poor diet or unrecognized emotional stress.

Share this book with your chiropractor or current medical profession and see if you can help heal your pain without costly operations or Western pain killers.

And, if you do live in NYC - read the book then seek treatment at Dr. Sinett's practice. You don't have to live with back pain. You deserve to be happy and pain free.

I'm not going to say this book is the end all be all for back pain...but, it's pretty darn close!! I've dealt with lower back issues for years, and after reading Dr. Sinett's book and following his simple ideas and guidelines, I haven't experienced pain in months. His book is incredibly straight forward and not filled with any "mumbo jumbo"...I recommend anyone with a back issue to buy and read this book!!!

So many doctors and practicioners claim to have the answers to this age old question. Well, it is refreshing to finally have a one-stop resource that actually lives up to what it claims. Dr. Sheldon and Todd Sinett put in a clear and conscise format not only what causes back pain, but they provide so many practical examples on how to help aleviate it. I have already begun to incorporate what I have read, including some easy to implement changes to my diet that require almost no sacrifice. Also, by having a series of pages with step-by-step exercises and practical tips throughout the book, I expect to refer back to this book for years to come.

The authors do a great job of explaining holistic causes and remedies for back problems. Let me start by saying that I am comparing this to Stuart McGill's (a PhD in spine biomechanics who backs up his statements with hard evidence in a lab) two back biomechanics books. The Sinetts' statements agree with McGill on many issues, but there are some exercises that may be harmful, according to what I've read from McGill and others.
On page 108 the plank is very helpful, but the Sinetts say to pull the navel into the spine. According to tests done by McGill, this actually disables some of the supportive "guy wire" torso muscles and ends up putting more pressure on the spine. A better way to "plank" is to brace, or stiffen the entire torso, but don't suck in.
On pages 110,111, and 112 there are exercises telling you to lie on your back and lift your straight legs up. This may be activating your psoas muscles much more than your abdominal muscles. If your psoas muscles are too strong and tight, they will pull on your lower back, where they are attached after running from the front of your hip through your pelvis. These are not good for my lower back.
I'm glad the authors dispel the myths regarding how to get six pack abs and how pursuing them can actually create back problems. Also they say that some Pilates exercises can create more problems. I never had back problems until I tried Pilates, which puts a lot of emphasis on the psoas, which pulls on the lower back. Look this up on the internet.
The book is written in a very ego-less and friendly style that is easy to read and comprehend. I believe the authors were very sincere in this effort to help, since there are no sensationalist claims or exaggerations. The stories of their clinical experience are also helpful.

I found this book to be pretty good review for Part III. It helped with summarizing all the stuff I learned in chiropractic school. It gave good reviews of the clinical impression or diagnosis, physical examination, neuro examination, etc. I also used the following which was just awesome for showing me the type of questions to be prepared for on the Part III and Part IV chiropractic Boards:
National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi
National Board of Chiropractic Part IV Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Volume 1) and (Volume 2) by Patrick Leonardi.
In fact, Dr. Patrick Leonardi's and Dr. Jeannette Gibson's study guides helped me to pass the boards. I advise getting these four study guides. It's better than taking these boards over again.

A great book, but not for Part IV

I agree that this book is a great asset, and would recommend it to anyone in Chiropractic school, having previously stipulated that it will not prepare you for part IV. The book does indeed review Part III is great detail, but the part four review - with the exception some medical stuff, abdominal exam, thorax, etc. and some others, does not fully prepare you for Part IV. I found the last section on technique extremely lacking, there were no pictures, and very little on the method with which National Boards test you on (vertebral malposition listings [national listings]) since most of us were taught Gonstead (at least at Life West).

In conclusion, I recommend the Irene Gold review seminars. They may help more than this book will. It is a great book, but let's be real here, with the expense of Part IV National Boards ($850), it is cheaper not to buy this book and go to a review and get a passing grade, than to save in the beginning and fail the exam. That's the opinion of someone who used this book and studied in detail and failed the first time around.

At first I thought this was too much information, then I realized it was everything I needed to know for my clinical studies as well as my academic studies. It is hard to understand how this book was written by doctors. I think professional editors would have a hard time negotiating this level of complexity. You both made it look simple and easy to follow. The amount of organization it contains is awesome. I am finishing up school now, and I only have one complaint about this text. It should've been handed out to the students on the first day of class with a schedule of which sections to learn for each year of study. It should be a required text for everyone. My life, my family, and my peers all would have benefitted from the decreased stress associated with a properly organized course plan. I probable could have saved thousands on coffee and actually slept instead of cramming this information for hours on end. This is an entire education between two covers. Thank you, thank you, thank you. My younger brother starts school in September and he is studying this book already! His life will be so much simpler because of it. I not only studied this material for boards, but due to the ease of which it is laid out I actually had time to learn it. You should write a business text next!

This book has good illustrations and is written in some color. It breaks-down all of the common disrhythmias and explains much of what you need to know. Also illustrates the areas of the heart that is effected with certain types of disrhythmias. One of the better books I have found at this point. I think they should print a bigger textbook size of this book, it would be even more useful.

Dr. Brose's "Guide to EKG Interpretation" is a resource that all physicians in training should seriously consider acquiring. It is an extremely thorough book, and its size is deceptive. You wouldn't think a small pocket-size book could pack this much information! As an illustration, I had a question on my Part II board exam about a "J wave", something I had never heard of, even after my EKG rotation and delivering a few EKG lectures. As it turns out, Dr. Brose's book addresses the J wave, while many other resources make no mention of it. Also, the material is presented in a way that is clear and very easy to follow. Full of cross-references, you can quickly gain a solid understanding of virtually any issue you'll encounter when interpreting an EKG. I believe that medical students, interns, residents, and attending physicians alike will benefit from owning this book. Certainly, it is something that medical students and interns should have in their pockets (it is not cumbersome...it's a perfect size).

Excellent!! Good source for rapid EKG Interpretation!

Every condition from spinal bifida occulta to fibrous dysplasia is described with the utmost detail. Every chapter has a helpful summary that summarizes all the important points of each condition. I also used this book to help me study for Part II, III and IV of the National Boards. However, if you really want a great book to study for the national boards do what my study group and I did, get the following:
National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi
National Board of Chiropractic Part IV Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Volume 1) and (Volume 2)
The questions in these last 4 study guides are right on with the kind of questions encountered on the National Boards. These 5 books contributed greatly to helping my study group and I pass the boards. For example the Part IV Study Guide had great sections on chiropractic technique, clinical impression and x-ray diagnosis. It presented the questions just like on the exam. These 5 books are must buys.

A touching journey for me. I feel as if I have shared your pain and healing. I can identify with your feelings. It's a great thing to glimpse into anothers heart and soul. I cried a lot as I read it. I like the poems your children wrote and the poem you gave them for Thanksgiving. Anna Scott Juday, Musician, Mother of four.

"I could hardly sleep last night I was so excited after reading your book! At last, a book that talks about the philosophy of chiropractic as well as the experience of it. Thank you for pointing out that chiropractic care affects the nervous system by removing the blocks to (the) transmission of our innate ability to heal the bodymindspirit." I am a long-time chiropractic patient with chronic shoulder and mid-back problems. I read this book years ago in its original version, but had forgotten how good it was. The new edition is colorful, informative and explains how chiropractic works in a manner that is easy to understand. The exercise portion is very helpful for those of us who "forget" what we are suppose to do. I highly recommend this book...buy it, you won't be disappointed!

I have had trouble trying to understand why my back hurt and why other problems were related to this. After reading Introduction to Chiropractic I truly understand why my spine is so important and why chiropractic care can provide me with significant help for my condition. My doctors have tried to explain things to me but they are either too busy or too technical, this book is easy to read and very understandable. It has completely changed my view of how to approach my health. I now understand much better the reason why I may get sick and what to do. There are so many helpful hints in the book. I highly recommend it.

This book is well written in easy-to-understand language. Not only does the book provide a clear explanation of chiropractic, it explains how the body functions and gives pointers on maintaining good health. I highly recommend it to anybody who wants to understand why their body might be complaining and want to help themselves gain good health and well being. I also recommend it to all health care providers. As one who suffers from osteoarthritis, I find the suggested exercises extremely helpful. I refer to it as "my handy little instruction book" and refer to it often. It would be an excellent gift for everybody you love.

Of the many things we seek in life, good health is probably at the top of most individual's lists. And when we seek health care guidance and advice, we want to be certain that that advise is from an expert source and someone we can count on for delivering sound recommendations.

Dr. Louis Sportelli has captured the essence of a leading non-invasive, non-drug health profession, reducing a complicated and oft misunderstood care paradigm to a simple to understand writing on the benefits of chiropractic care. As we explore new directions in health care, especially us baby-boomers, we are all looking for a solution to our aches and pains, effective diet, nutrition and excerise regimens and a true understanding of the reasons for our changing physiologic function. Reading Introduction to Chiropractic answers these and so many more questions about our bodies and outlines in simple to read text the functions that attribute to good health.

While we are told to rest, take aspirin or other drugs for many of the most incapacitating and debilitating problems associated with the back, neck and extremity pain, Introduction to Chiropractic takes the reader to a new dimension of understanding in explaining why natural health care optimizes the bodies own inner intelligence mechanisms. There's more practical and useful information in this book's 50 easy reading pages about common sense health care than I've read anywhere.

If you've read or heard contrary information about the benefits or usefulness of chiropractic care, this book should put any of those concerns to rest. Thank you, Dr. Sportelli, for taking the time to write this wonderful book explaining the many benefits of chiropractic, a safe, effective and necessary component to obtaining maximum good health!

This is the best chiropractic book I've ever encountered. This would be an essential resource for anyone considering going to a chiropractor or who has questions about what a chiropractor can do for them.

The language is very easy to understand and is well referenced with links to many other sources of information on-line about back care and chiropractic.

I gave my copy to a chiropractic cynic. He's got his first appointment next week.

After having visited my medical physicans for months with chronic back pain and digestive pain we hit a roadblock. The physicians could find no reason for my medical issues. MRI, of everything you can think of produced no real diagnosis with the exception of a degenerative disk. I decided to try something different and I struck gold. No longer do I take any medications and I am so much more active. My day to day life has changed as well. In short, I am going through a transformation. Dr. Wayne Dyer has taught me a better approach to life.

Dr. Wayne Dyer really practices what he lectures about . . . I
just heard him on a PBS special, in which he described how he
often sends those who write him a gift for no special reason . . . so when he graciously sent me his live lecture tape series, SECRETS OF YOUR OWN HEALING POWER, I rushed to listen to it . . . my reaction: WOW!

As is the case with any book or tape put out by Dyer, you'll be
inspired and informed when experiencing it . . . in addition, you'll be entertained (as was the group of chiropractic professionals fortunate to be able to hear him).

He emphasizes that the secrets to healing are not somewhere "out
there," but rather, healing is something that takes place inside each and every one of us, occurring when we "connect to our Source" and bring Spirit to the disease." He emphasizes that healers need to be able to banish doubt and see their clients as individuals who already possess the capacity to heal themselves. That is, those with health challenges need to have someone in their energy field who truly believes that healing can take place.

These other observations by Dyer also caught my attention:
Doctors when they misdiagnose . . . do they then agree to having
misbilled?

When you place a label on somebody you negate them. You then
begin to treat the label, not the person.

Four words will end all conflicts in relationships: You're right about that.

This is very inspirational, humorous, frank and informative. Dr Dyer never fails to show me another way or another book which takes me further along the path of development. In this CD he has produced some magnificent work. I laughed, I cried and I was extremely moved. I recommend it to anyone wanting to find the truth of what the world is about.

I really enjoyed the audio book. I felt Mr. Dryer had a good sense of humor yet realistic goals that we can all find our way to. I feel this book would be good for anyone trying to let go of past anger, disappointment, or pain. I have recommended it to many clients of our health library, and the therapists at our clinic are now referring clients to it as well.
