Practitioners Books

This book is a jewel. There is a lot it doesn't say and a lot it does say. For someone interested in dream interpretation it is very useful but might be read with some other books that will add depth. To mention some others, there is Inner Work by Robert Johnson, The Art of Dreaming by Jill Mellick, Dreams by C.G. Jung, the books by Arnold Mindell, and so on.

I assess children's reading skills as part of my job. I was so impressed by this book, I showed it to my director who also ordered it. This is a comprehensive text that describes tools for reading assessments. I have expanded the tests I use based on Rathvon's recomendations and have found them to be "right on." I think my professional knowledge has been enhanced by this book.

Dr. Tilley has again provided a helpful reference for Small Animal Cardiology that can also fit into a lab coat pocket. Not only is this a valuable source of information for students in clinics and for exam review, but also a quick reference for busy clinicians. Obviously EKG is only a part of a thorough cardiac evaluation, but it is often an important and underrated diagnostic tool. And for those of us who cannot always find a bic pen (vets will understand) when we need one, including a EKG ruler was a great touch! I strongly recommend this to any veterinarian interested in improving his/her EKG reading skills.

The chapter on eating disorders was especially fascinating, and while some portions were a bit more psychodynamic than is in accord with my tastes, still a good read. It's worth noting that this is geared towards practitioners treating members of the gay & lesbian community and is *not* (thankfully) a guide to "conversion therapy".

This is a great resource for practitioners that work with children of domestic violence. I have referred to it myself for group ideas, and ways of managing the group. It is unfortunate that it is unavailable on this site. They have an updated version of the group layouts on their website.

This is a thin book of 27 chapters, each presenting a health practitioner's perspective and experience with prayer. The book is published by Toronto's Anglican Book Centre, but includes a wide variety of Christian viewpoints, medical researchers' "recovering-agnostic" thoughts, and selections from Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist, and Native practitioners. The first chapters have nice overviews of scientific research documenting prayer's benefits (e.g., by Larry Dossey, MD). Later chapters present fascinating challenges and blessings in varied settings, using varied styles of prayer, and giving readers numerous models to consider for how to deepen their prayer lives and ministries.

Each chapter gives background on the practitioner interviewed and then presents answers to questions related to their particular work and experience. Interesting issues are raised throughout, such as: the most effective forms of prayer, the possibility of *negative* effects, ethical issues in seeking permission, qualities a person can cultivate to be a more effective channel of prayer.

I found myself wanting to hear a lot more from some of the practitioners than this brief volume allowed, but the book is uplifting and very helpful in suggesting people under whom you might pursue further study. The breadth of the experiences recounted offers a fertile ground for exploring common elements among all approaches to prayer, healing, and peace.

This was a book that I used during my master's work on program evaluation. It was very specific about program evaluation methods and design. It's a great read for those that have never done program evaluation or have been doing it for years.

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the numerous challenges facing policymakers seeking to design and put into place robust healthcare systems in the face of rapid socio-economic and demographic changes. While addressing healthcare systems in the industrialised world, most of the emphasis lies on discussing the different policy options for middle- and lower-income countries.

The book was useful for up-to-date statistics on health and demographic issues, a clear and concise writing style, and numerous case studies from various countries. The authors provide a clear analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of different models and approaches, highlighting in which contexts they may be most applicable and effective. Each section comes with a helpful list of references which are a good starting point to explore the issues in greater depth.

A most useful book that looks at how to develop teams that can work effectively together. Easy to read and succinct, ideal for busy people to dip into.

The word "literacy" in the title is meant in the broadest sense, as it is not about basic reading instruction. It provides antecdotal examples of writing and communication inquiries/exercises/lesson plans to engage students outside of the typical American cultural construct, which the author claims led to better results with measures such as standardized tests. Although the subjects were fifth graders, the pedagogy seems to apply to a wide range of ages. Reviewer's recommendation: Try a "search within" the book to see if it is relevant to your needs.
