I have been recommending the first edition of this book for years, as one of the best "beginners books" around. The new edition is even better since Ms. Wilson has added more essential oils, information on hydrosols...brought the book up to date with what is happening in the world of Aromatherapy in this decade.
The book offers a great balance of information about a wide array of essential oils as well as recipes/formulas for their use in restoring wellbeing to both body and emotions. It is one of the best on the market today.

I absolutely love this book. If you are seeking more than just basic information about essential oils and how they work, this is the book for you. It describes everything you need to know from the many types of essential oil extraction, to carrier oils, to storage, to blends and hydrosols. Blending the appropriate oils and amounts is a snap with this easy to use and informative resource which includes numerous recipes. I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed. Happy blending!

Great start

This is a great book to use to get oriented to using essential oils because the authors have selected a short list of basic oils, 12 in number, that are a good balance of stimulating, relaxing, "breathe easy", skin and hair enhancing, and cleansing oils and they are reasonably priced, except for the chamomile. They also offer a short list of 12 oils that one might want to try next. They suggest a variety of ways to apply and use the essential oils and all of them are easy to apply. I have given this book to several people, along with small amounts of the oils, because it is a fine introduction and avoids the confusing mass of options that might discourage a beginner.

It's definitely one that deserves a place on your shelf. Contains guidance and suggestions for uses, including recipes for external use (herbs/essential oils) and ones for internal use (herbs only). I would say that it's about as complete a guide as you'll ever find on the subject and I respect the author's sensible approach to it. Very highly recommend.

Lots and lots of info on 80 essential oils.
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 1997-08-11
This is a really great reference book for 80 different essential oils! Each plant is described in terms of what it looks like, where it thrives and history of use. Often, ancient magical uses and properties are listed. The saying, "to keep evil at bay" refers to the power of bay laurel, Laurus Nobilis to protect from evil. No current magical uses are listed and the emphasis is upon current medicinal and beauty applications and uses in cooking. Before refrigeration, meat was stored in highly aromatic marinades to help prevent putrefaction.

Each essential oil is described by color, odor and viscosity; from what part of the plant it is distilled; principal constituents and dangers are listed. Apparently, aromatherapy has been in use throughout Europe even after modern medicines began to be widely used and is only "new" in the United States.

Each essential oil has a list of many common ailments for which it is recommended. I wish these were indexed! There is also a section of A-Z common ailments that is helpful. I found the recipies for cooking especially intriguing as most of the aromatherapy books I've read don't specifically focus on cooking.

Aromatherapy is a great alternative to traditional western medicine, especially for self treating conditions for which one would normally go to the drugstore. In Europe, aromatherapists provide primary health care and are medical doctors, but the United States has not yet moved to license aromatherapists and they are not generally trained in medicine.

This is a great book to have on hand as a reference when using essential oils for self-treatment

I have always had my homeopathic remedies made by a pharmacy and was skeptical of remedies that could be purchased at a store. Well, when all else failed to work for me, I decided to try the Bach remedies and they worked! From there, I branched out into treating our cat and also my children.

This book is easy to understand and use. As most Flower Remedy books do, it starts with a short introduction. From there, it goes on to list the remedies alphabetically and to explain which sort of child would benefit. In a style that reminded me of Waldorf School educators, the author also included a short story to be told to the child related to their personality type. Very interesting.

At the end, there is a chart listing the remedies and the conditions each one can treat. This is a very useful reference. This chart differs from the chapters because it also lists physical problems, as well as emotional personality. For example, I looked under pimples for my daughter. Of course, Bach thought that physical problems all had emotional or psychological roots to begin with.

This is a book that I will consult over and over again. It is very well done.

I have been to several libraries, and have brought every book home to read. After which I purchased this book. It has been my BIBLE! I would not part with it. I have used many recipes with great sucess. My Mother had been to a specialist for a fungal infection on her finger. Six months of prescription medicine and it had not healed. Tea tree did the job in 3 weeks. I could go on! Great book!

The book is written so anyone can understand and use the information on a daily basis. It provides valuable information on prevention, healing yourself, and has helpful ideas. The pictures are clear and the directions are very easy to follow step by step. You can learn the important pressure points quickly.
I have used the tehniques to travel 22 hours on a plane and did not get air sick, swollen limbs, or suffer from jet lag just from using a few pressure points and following the helpful hints.
The herbal and aroma therapy is also very helpful for relaxation and improving health. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

An essential reference tool for aromatherapists
Helpful Votes: 79 out of 79 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-25
With so many books on aromatherapy available, it's difficult to know what's really valuable. The authors of so many books have few medical or scientific credentials and take a highly impressionistic approach. For this reason alone, to find a book like this written by a chemist is a rare treat. And, since this is a chemist writing in 1936, we find the source of much of today's common knowledge of the discipline - from the man who made it a discipline and coined the word 'aromatherapy'. Translator Louise Davids and editor Robert Tisserand offer us a natural-reading translation with the added benefit of an editor's introduction which places the book in its historical context. Tisserand points out that "as a chemist Gattefosse was not a part of the natural therapy movement and he did not share [today's] holistic, 'alternative' approach." That comes as a great relief to those of us who want some reliable chemical basis for our choices of oils. Even more useful are the copious notes Tisserand provides throughout the book, sometimes to explain terminology, more often with comments on Gattefosse's observations in the light of today's knowledge.

Although I don't recommend this book for beginners (some of the recipes are time consuming and complicated), it is an excellent resource for chefs who love fresh herbs. Every recipe I have used from this book has turned out wonderfully. In fact, I love this book so much that I have given it as a gift to several friends of mine. If you love to serve good food and you want to feel good about the food you serve, this is the cookbook for you. Bon appetit!

This is my favorite herb book.

I was not very familiar with aromatherapy when I first read this book. Then, as I did more research, I realized that this power-packed volume contains everything that either a novice or experienced aromatherapist needs to know. From how aromatherapy works to how essentials oils are extracted, from safety and toxicity to a complete Materia Medica -- it's all here, and more! Ericksen clearly knows of what she speaks. She wisely guides the reader through the use and storage of essential oils, covering nearly every application, including aromatherapy for children, the frail or elderly, common ailments, and women's needs. There are countless recipes, a glossary, and a list of resources. You will come away from this book feeling that you know what you are doing and are ready to treat your (or your friends' and loved ones') specific conditions with confidence. Although not a big book, it is encyclopedic in its scope of information. Healing With Aromoatherapy is not a book to collect dust on your shelf -- you'll use it and refer to it endlessly.
