The descriptions of the oils, their uses and compatiblities are very good. I would have liked to have a little more information on some of the oils and perhaps some more recipes for men's fragrences but all in all this a book I use alot. Aromatherapy is not just about smell but also about taste and good health, meditation aids and more.

Many years ago I received this book as a present from my then near 90 years old mother, and it resulted my first "serious" book an Aromatherapy. Now, after nearly ten years, and after connecting with Jean Valnet, the Tisserands, with Kurt Schnaubelt, Shirley Price, Patricia Davis, Valerie Wormwood, etc etc., it remains still one of my favorites on this thematica.

Susanne Fischer offers a, in my opinion, unique combination between innocence and determination, spirit for curiosity and deep knowledge, precise and palpable information and connecting poetry, and all this together makes this book for me so valuable, no matter if I am looking just for precise information on this or that oil, or if I am "only" in need to read some enhancing words.

Although this is a paper back (large edition)the graphics and color are eyecatching. THIS BOOK IS A WELCOME ADDITION TO MY REFERENCE LIBRARY ON AROMATHERAPY.

Having read tombs and tombs of data, publications and books on the subject aromatherapy, including authors Schnaubelt, Price, Mojay, Catty, Tisserand and Battaglia (all of which are great books), Fischer-Rizzi is one of a few books, including Salvatore Battaglia, that I refer to constantly. Fischer-Rizzi's writing and presentation style is authoritative and page-turning, and given the complexity of the subject matter, she presents all that is aromatherpy with ease and marvellous readability. The book does provide recipes for all kinds of ailments and cosmetology, but what I most like about this lady's book is the 'straight to the heart of the matter' reading. The book is far more literary than many books on this subject. That is not to say it is airy fairy or wordy - far from it - it simply states each oil's components in plain English and does not bore and labour through overuse of chemistry and jargonised language. Fischer-Rizzi also advises each oil's affinity with other oils, which will help you blend and create synergies. The book also details base oil use and therapeutic benefits.

I am very happy with this book. It has two pages on each oil describing the aroma, a description of the plant, the history and myths, chemical constituents, uses, precautions, and other oils it blends well with. At the back is a glossary, a blend chart, which catagorizes the types of oils, and a skin type chart. I have found it easy to use, and helpful in my home creations.

Excellent tool and reference

This is one of my favorite and most referenced handbooks for essential oils. It is designed for one who knows at least a little about aromatherapy, and plans to be working with the oils. Warning: the drawings on some of the pages may be offensive to some, depicting a witch with an herb popularly used by witches at one time, and people not fully dressed on others. I value the book for it's wealth of information, and ignore some of the illustrations.

Two pages are devoted to each of the essential oils, which are in alphabetical order. Near the title of each oil there is a chart listing the plant/part (plant as in "tree", and part as in "leaves" or "fruit"), Latin name, family, note (top, middle or base), planet, and means of extraction. There are several categories that describe each oil. Aroma describes the kind of fragrance; "features" tell about physical characteristics of the plant, and where it is grown, and such. A section called "History and Myth" tells about how the oil was used historically, and any myths associated with it. The chemical constituents, oil properties, and any precautions are listed. Three sections are devoted to telling how each oil may effect the mind (as in being a sedative), body (as in helping to regulate women's cycles), and skin (as in reactions to say, oily or sensitive skin). The last heading on each page is "blends" which lists other essential oils which blend well with the one under discussion.

There are several helpful resources in the back of the book. A glossary gives a short definition of oil properties, and lists the oils with each property. A blending chart is included, categorizing the oils by what they are (trees, flowers, spices, etc.) and telling what commonly works well together. Another chart lists the oils under which skin types for which they would be most helpful.

This book is great! It covers most of the oils any one would use and some you may never have heard of. I really like that it includes the note( top middle base) for each oil as well. This is a must have book that you will use often.

This book is definately a must for anyone studying or wants to know more about essential oils. I used this book as a bible during my Diploma of Aromatherapy course, and I still find it a valuable tool for this modality, as it covers everything from where the plant originates from, its chemical properities, effects on the mind, body, skin, blending. I highly recommend this book for any aromatherapy enthusiast. A must on the bookshelf.

The illustrations are pleasant and add to the relaxing, calming effect of the subject of the bath. This book is a great gift idea for friends to share.

This a wonderful book, exploring angel lore and the magic of fruits and flowers--a botanica of information for anyone interested in learning aromatherapy. I also learned a great deal about Indian herbalism. This is a witty, well-written book chockful of useful, encyclopedic information, yet in layman's terms. I absolutely adore the heroine, a college professor named Carolina. What a bright and positive role model she is, not just for young Latinas, but all young women. And so pretty. It's a wonder she's single. The recipes readers can test out are dreamy. Also, I work in Boulder and find the author's description of the community to be very accurate.

Pardon me, but let's translate that last paltry review (in English): "and beautiful... in the one that you don't learn anything of aromaterapia." Oh, is this non-Latino way left of zero review, or what? Did this person fall off the planet? Did he/she even read the book? I doubt it. Read it, you will see! It is wonderful and has plenty of herblore and aromatherapy history. Personally, people who do these stupid, spiteful reviews should be banned from online reviews. They are so distasteful (desagradable)! I love this latest Carolina da Silva book and I use it as a desktop reference. Espero con aliento cebado para su próxima aventura. ¡Compre este libro! While this book is in Spanish I had the opportunity to read an English manuscript while I was working on the cover artwork.

This book is really refreshing! The first in a series of potentially 6 books - focuses on a woman's journey into learning the art of aromatherapy. It reads partly like a fiction novel and partly like an aromatherapy instruction book. It is both entertaining and informative with actual aromatherapy recipes that you can try yourself.

The best essential oils reference book in the English language!
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-03
For owners of previous editions of the Essential Oils Desk Reference, this new and expanded edition will be a treat. The black and white photos have been replaced by full-color photos and this edition includes new essential oils from Ecuador.

For beginning oil users or for people who are ready to switch from recreational essential oils to therapeutic grade essential oils, the Essential Oils Desk Reference is the single best essential oils reference work in the English language, in my opinion. Medical doctors refer to the Physicians Desk Reference and serious essential oil users refer to the Essential Oils Desk Reference.

For the beginner or for people who have been buying other essential oil books, the 588 pages of this book can seem overwhelming at first. When I'm teaching people how to use it, I divide it into five main sections.
1. Introduction
2. Essential Oils and Essential Oil Products
3. Education
4. Health Issues and Essential Oil Recommendations
5. Appendices and Index
Most people use parts 2 and 4 most.

The quickest way to get started is to begin with the index and look for the essential oil or health issue that interests you. If multiple pages are given, look first for the page listed in bold.

People of all ages are using this valuable book. I know teenagers, moms, and even people in their 80s who refer to the EDR on a regular basis.

The EDR is based on the assumption that you are using therapeutic grade essential oils, so please do not try some of its recommendation unless the oils you are using are at least AFNOR or ISO certified. Therapeutic grade essential oils are ideal. If you are using essential oils that merely have "pure" on the label, you're doing so at your own risk.

I keep my hardcover edition of the EDR within reach in my office and the smaller spiral-bound edition in my briefcase. At the time of this writing, Amazon does not yet carry the smaller version of the new 4th edition, but they probably will very soon.

Here's the bottom line: In this single volume, you will find almost everything you want to know about safely using essential oils for yourself and those you care about most.

One can easily tell that the author has not only spent much time studying and working with this aspect of aromatherapy, but the writing was purely a labor of love. Her other books are very good. This one is excellent. Even people who do not particularly do this type of practice will appreciate the detailed knowledge provided and the author's deep respect for the subject.

This book does wonderful justice to what we have all subliminally known - namely that scent and fragrance work on more than the physical realm. In this remarkable book, Valerie Worwood discusses in great detail the role of essential oils in all kinds of spiritual and emotional practice and healing. For example there are numerous colour photographs of the remarkably beautiful auras of different oils. There are table compiled by those who have real experience of them, of how oils interact with angels (don't let this put you off) and there is an in depth discussion of each of 62 oils and how they work to support and heal us on a deeper and higher levels than anything purely chemical could. I have long used and love essential oils and this is an invaluable addition to my library of more basic introductions to the physical properties of the oils. Incidentally, Worwood's Fragrant Pharmacy is one of the best books of its kind of the medical and household uses of oils, and her Fragrant Mind is BY FAR the best book on healing mind and emotions with essential oils.

In this small book Dr. Ferru gives a short overview of the essentials of living the right way. Perfect health depends on drinking water, taking the right fats, the right food combinations with the right nutrition, the right environment (feng shui and no electromagnetic fields) and a lot more. Things you will often neglect or forget (colors, breathing the right way etc..). Dr. Ferru has brought all possible subjects just into this little book to remind you what to do to live the right way. Just a pitty that he has kept most chapters so very short (with the big print the book is most readable and understandable for the layman, but I was hungry for more).

I found the book to be an easily understood, step-by-step approach to improving your physical and mental health. This book is beautiful!
I love this book. I have my own natural beauty product business, and this book has so much to offer. I also love that it isn't sectioned by product type, but by the seasons, and furthermore, that it doesn't just have body care recipes, there are Teas, Elixirs, Soups and Tonics as well. It really brings home the idea that it's not just what you put ON your body, but in it as well.
Just looking at it and reading it really creates this atmosphere that urges you to be relaxed and creative.
Very good information on ingredients and Aromatherapy as well.

I bought this on a whim when it was recommended to me and couldn't be more thrilled with this purchase! What a beautifully presented book, packed with rejuvenating recipes for inner and outer health and beauty, and written with the beginner in mind. It is very informative, easy to follow, and the ingredients can easily be found by anyone near a health food store or internet access. It's apparent that Barbara Close knows what she's doing as an aromatherapist and I can only imagine that her holistic spa must be absolutely wonderful considering the attention, care and fine taste that went into this book. I plan to give copies of this as gifts and am sure anyone who receives it will be as enthralled with it and ready to try their own recipes as I am. Five stars!

This is a wonderful book that teaches you how to use essential oils and herbs to cure common ailments. After reading this book and trying some of the recipes I truly believe that by sensibly using aromatherapy, herbalism, massage and healthy food you can live more naturally and improve your quality of life.

The book starts out with a brief history. Then you find first aid charts, one for herbs and another for essential oils. The charts include the name, properties, common uses and any hazards of each item. Instructions for preparing and using them in teas, infusions, decoctions, tinctures, ointments, inhalations and vaporization follow. There is also a great list of carrier and herbal infused oils.

Next, there are forty recipes arranged by seasons focusing of different aspects such as rejuvenation and sensuality. Spring includes recipes for a delicious pear elixir and calendula salve. Summer features a natural pleasant smelling insect repellant, a tea tree oil antiseptic and a citrus body splash. Autumn includes a wonderful grapefruit exfoliating paste and rosemary infused massage oil. Winter contains a tasty recipe for garlic soup, a chamomile face serum and a peppermint thyme inhalation.

Association, education, and resource directories are a nice bonus. I liked that the resource directory listed places to find herbs and oils as well as bottles and jars to put them in. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to pamper themselves. It is packed with information and is easy to follow. It would also make a great gift.
