Susanne Fischer offers a, in my opinion, unique combination between innocence and determination, spirit for curiosity and deep knowledge, precise and palpable information and connecting poetry, and all this together makes this book for me so valuable, no matter if I am looking just for precise information on this or that oil, or if I am "only" in need to read some enhancing words.

Two pages are devoted to each of the essential oils, which are in alphabetical order. Near the title of each oil there is a chart listing the plant/part (plant as in "tree", and part as in "leaves" or "fruit"), Latin name, family, note (top, middle or base), planet, and means of extraction. There are several categories that describe each oil. Aroma describes the kind of fragrance; "features" tell about physical characteristics of the plant, and where it is grown, and such. A section called "History and Myth" tells about how the oil was used historically, and any myths associated with it. The chemical constituents, oil properties, and any precautions are listed. Three sections are devoted to telling how each oil may effect the mind (as in being a sedative), body (as in helping to regulate women's cycles), and skin (as in reactions to say, oily or sensitive skin). The last heading on each page is "blends" which lists other essential oils which blend well with the one under discussion.
There are several helpful resources in the back of the book. A glossary gives a short definition of oil properties, and lists the oils with each property. A blending chart is included, categorizing the oils by what they are (trees, flowers, spices, etc.) and telling what commonly works well together. Another chart lists the oils under which skin types for which they would be most helpful.

Esencia De La AromaterapiaReview Date: 2000-10-12
This book is really refreshing! The first in a series of potentially 6 books - focuses on a woman's journey into learning the art of aromatherapy. It reads partly like a fiction novel and partly like an aromatherapy instruction book. It is both entertaining and informative with actual aromatherapy recipes that you can try yourself.

The best essential oils reference book in the English language!Review Date: 2008-04-03
For beginning oil users or for people who are ready to switch from recreational essential oils to therapeutic grade essential oils, the Essential Oils Desk Reference is the single best essential oils reference work in the English language, in my opinion. Medical doctors refer to the Physicians Desk Reference and serious essential oil users refer to the Essential Oils Desk Reference.
For the beginner or for people who have been buying other essential oil books, the 588 pages of this book can seem overwhelming at first. When I'm teaching people how to use it, I divide it into five main sections.
1. Introduction
2. Essential Oils and Essential Oil Products
3. Education
4. Health Issues and Essential Oil Recommendations
5. Appendices and Index
Most people use parts 2 and 4 most.
The quickest way to get started is to begin with the index and look for the essential oil or health issue that interests you. If multiple pages are given, look first for the page listed in bold.
People of all ages are using this valuable book. I know teenagers, moms, and even people in their 80s who refer to the EDR on a regular basis.
The EDR is based on the assumption that you are using therapeutic grade essential oils, so please do not try some of its recommendation unless the oils you are using are at least AFNOR or ISO certified. Therapeutic grade essential oils are ideal. If you are using essential oils that merely have "pure" on the label, you're doing so at your own risk.
I keep my hardcover edition of the EDR within reach in my office and the smaller spiral-bound edition in my briefcase. At the time of this writing, Amazon does not yet carry the smaller version of the new 4th edition, but they probably will very soon.
Here's the bottom line: In this single volume, you will find almost everything you want to know about safely using essential oils for yourself and those you care about most.

Not Just Skin DeepReview Date: 2008-05-21
I love this book. I have my own natural beauty product business, and this book has so much to offer. I also love that it isn't sectioned by product type, but by the seasons, and furthermore, that it doesn't just have body care recipes, there are Teas, Elixirs, Soups and Tonics as well. It really brings home the idea that it's not just what you put ON your body, but in it as well.
Just looking at it and reading it really creates this atmosphere that urges you to be relaxed and creative.
Very good information on ingredients and Aromatherapy as well.
A great find!
What a beautiful book!Review Date: 2001-05-20
Great recipes, makes a great giftReview Date: 2000-06-27
The book starts out with a brief history. Then you find first aid charts, one for herbs and another for essential oils. The charts include the name, properties, common uses and any hazards of each item. Instructions for preparing and using them in teas, infusions, decoctions, tinctures, ointments, inhalations and vaporization follow. There is also a great list of carrier and herbal infused oils.
Next, there are forty recipes arranged by seasons focusing of different aspects such as rejuvenation and sensuality. Spring includes recipes for a delicious pear elixir and calendula salve. Summer features a natural pleasant smelling insect repellant, a tea tree oil antiseptic and a citrus body splash. Autumn includes a wonderful grapefruit exfoliating paste and rosemary infused massage oil. Winter contains a tasty recipe for garlic soup, a chamomile face serum and a peppermint thyme inhalation.
Association, education, and resource directories are a nice bonus. I liked that the resource directory listed places to find herbs and oils as well as bottles and jars to put them in. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to pamper themselves. It is packed with information and is easy to follow. It would also make a great gift.
